On "My Car Story" we're in Rosemont IL on 3-4-20 at the World of Wheels car show.
We're looking at a 1965 Plymouth Barracuda Restomod in Gold Paint. The car is equipped with a 408 CI “Stroker” V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Matt Clark. Matt’s had this car since 2014. Matt shares he and his Dad Pat would go to car show, and every time Matt would share with his Dad he liked a car, his Dad would share details of the 1965 Plymouth Barracuda he had and how much he liked that car. Matt decided to find and buy one and he spent years to get this one to the condition we see today.

I think that guy did the perfect job of achieving the right balance of upgrading it yet still keeping it a 65 Barracuda.
In my book I give that car a Perfect 10.

I was born in 1960. Some of my earliest memories are going car shopping with my mother and father and 5 year old brother in early 1964. As a 3 year old, along with my older brother, we tried to get my mother to buy a 64 cuda in gold with the black stripe. She said no, I'm a mother of two, so white with a red interior it was. That was April 64. She never bought another car. My younger brother still has it. 273 2 bbl, pushbutton 904. It has the Valiant emblem on the rear panel. The Barracuda fender emblems have the long tail on the A as opposed to the short tail on the 65.

I inherited a 65 Cuda a few years ago and have been replacing all the old worn parts, paint, etc. The original 273 was shot and I couldn't find a new one and went with a 318 withe Edelbrok 4 bbl. I drive it almost daily and get much admiration wherever I go. It is sad to me that this show car is not driven astray are FUN to drive and be seen in. I go to local car shows.

Very nice car. My Dad bought a ‘66 Barracuda Formula S with a 4 speed. The speedometer went to 150 m.p.h. and there was also a factory tachometer beside the speedo. There was also a centre console around the transmission shifter. The 273 Hi Po engine was rated at 235 h.p. I had a lot of fun with that car and it ran 14.9’s @93 m.p.h. stock.

I fell in love with my cuda as a teenager. The rake makes it. My cuda had Gabriel highjackers to lift it. Mom had it towed away and jucked while the engine was being rebuild but that's another story. I just got a 64 pushbutton V8 cuda that was in a barn for 40 years. Still almost twenty years on the road in upstate NY left me with alot of work which I will do passionitly. Im. Watching everything I can about her.

My dad died when I was 16 and left me his 65 Barracuda. I drove it to high school during the late 70s. The tops of both front fenders were rusted through and when I went through a puddle they spouted water like a whale's blowholes! But that helped to cool down the overheated interior from that massive rear glass.

in the summer of '73, my mother took me to visit a friend of hers in wisconsin. her husband, bob larson had a creme colored '66 manual trans v8 barracuda, and he took us to o'hare in it when we left. i had seen the new, big, challeger style 'cuda cars, and had no idea that these were a thing. they look more valiant like in front. the rear window is really neat. mustangs didn't look at all like falcons, for sharing underpinnings. nice edition of my car story. with a story, too.

The angry rumble of that engine fits that car. Love it. Everything about that car is what Chrysler should have done, back in the day..... Stripes, color, and so on. I never understood why Chrysler didn't jump, with both feet, into the midsize market, earlier in the game. They had way better performance motors.... oh well, but that is by far, the coolest 65 Cuda on Earth.

great car. I once drove my brother's friend's new gold 65 B'cuda home from a party as the (underage)designated driver. I was so impressed with how it drove, that when I ran across a 66 B'cuda years later, I had to get it. Mine looks nowhere near as good as that, but it has a 225 sl/6 w/ a 4spd, BBP 8.25 rear axle, and front disk brakes from a 73 duster, 14x7 Mustang Magnum 500 wheels, and Police t-bars, front and rear sway bars. It is really fun to drive, and can keep up with some newer offerings especially in the twisties.

Hi back at you Lou, yes that's one beautiful Barracuda, it amazes me how much a really nice car can be improved so much, this car is beyond beautiful. I really don't think he could have done better. I liked the Barracuda so much I bought one in 1968. It was a Formula S with a 340 and 4 speed trany, dark blue with a black interior. With a little engine work ,heads, headers, bigger carb and 456 gears. It ran in the mid to hi 10s and still okay on the street. But it sure didn't look like this. Way over the top this one. 👍👍👍

I don't know what motor is in this Barracuda but I can tell you that when I was a kid here in Southern PA...there were quite a few first gen Barracuda Formula S cars with the little 273 Hyper-pak V8's running around here. They terrorized a hell of a lot of bigger displacement cars, with impunity. One of the great little motors to ever come out of Detroit.

Hi Frank, you are correct, the 273 Hypro was only offered in a few of these cars with the 4 speed, and from what my dad told me, it did very well against several other cars of it's time. He also told me he blew up 2 factory rear ends "under warranty" and he told me that when they put his third one in, they said "this is your last one under warranty" so that was defininitly the weak link in the powertrain. This car has a highly modified 408 stroker built brand out of a brand new 360 magnum block by Indy Cylinder Head, with all of the cam and head work, Russ was able to get 473hp out of this naturally aspirated small block, it now has the 727 Trans, and a Dana 60 with 3:55 gears. Fun car to drive..glad you enjoy the car.

@@mattclarkrealtorhoustongal2733 That's some great info Matt and thanks much for filling in the blanks. Yes on your Dad's car and that differential. I'm not positive but suspect that the A-bodies in the 63-67 range regardless of slant-6 or sporting the 273 option...all had some form of the in-house 7-1/4 rear end. They were never destined to handle much over 200HP or so. Not surprised the dealer told your Dad to tone it down or they'd rescind his 5/50 warranty. LOL That was more common back in the day than you'd think. That 360-turned-408 sounds great. Not that it matters but that Dana-60 gear choice is probably the 3:54. The 3.55 was a standard gear in the Chrysler built 8-3/4. Happy New Year Matt.

The 1964 paint scheme with the stripe was a single wide stripe with narrow, 3/8" pin stripes on either side of that. I see that you are missing the trunk lid support device, that you had to lift the lid just a bit to let the catch release, then you could drop the lid closed.

    I owned 3 -- a black 65 with smoky 273 2-bbl so tossed in a 318 and got rear-ended 2 days later.
Next a copper 66 with another 273 but previous owner put a big-port Edelbrock & 4-bbl AFB on those small-port heads. Mixture separation at the intake gasket fer sure! Kept the intake manifold and put in a 340 with 2.02 valves just to match the port size. Eventually its fender cancer spread to other areas from environmental causes linked to road salt.
Third one was a gold 65 for $900 from Texas where they don't use road salt. It had a 225 1-bbl slant six (but only 5 with compression). I sold it when I got married and bought something more sensible, a Chevy Vega (Crower cam, Offy manifold, 45DCOE, T-10...)
