N47 - Bmw's most unreliable engine ever? That's bullshit. The problem is people changing the oil every 30k km and not 10-15 and wondering why their timing chains failed
Sadly my most unreliable car was a Fiesta ST180. I bought it modified as it was tastefully done, with loads of receipts and was tuned by Pumaspeed who are a very reputable Ford tuning company. Unfortunately it must have been ragged around within an inch of its life every trip, as just at the start of lockdown three years ago (and only three months into my ownership) it suffered catastrophic engine and turbo failure and I had to fight tooth and nail for the warranty company to replace it, even though I bought the extended warranty which covered the engine and ancillaries and it was co-signed by the area manager of Evans Halshaw. Eventually, three months and a lot of headaches later I got the car back, drove it two hours down from Glasgow back home and in the Tesco car park I felt the clutch friction plate literally disintegrate through the pedal when I tried to reverse out of my parking space. Cue another phone call to Evans Halshaw again asking why on earth the obviously shagged clutch wasn't replaced when they had the entire engine taken out, as it was also covered under extended warranty and should have been noticed immediately by any technician, no excuses. After some mumbling on their end they came and collected the car, off it went to Glasgow again to get a new clutch. Three weeks later (still in first major lockdown) the car is ready once again. The service and repairs manager was extremely apologetic about everything despite him having had nothing to do with the car, so I thanked him and took the car back again. I was thoroughly looking forward to spending some time driving the car without any more major issues, until a month later the headgasket also decides to disintegrate on an engine with barely 5000 miles covered from new, and only around 800 of those done by myself. Headgasket failure is incredibly rare on the ST180s so I took this as a sign from god and immediately requested a total refund of the vehicle on the grounds of it not being fit for purpose. Wisely, the Evans branch I bought the car from accepted this without any hassle and a week later a nice chap came and picked the poor Fiesta up and informed me that the full refund would reach my account within a few hours. I still miss that car and if the interior wasn't woefully old-fashioned I'd probably have bought another one despite all my bad luck. Even with only around 240bhp tuned it was monstrously fast and it embarrassed 335i's and Golf R's on twisty roads with scarily little effort. It also sounded fantastic with a Miltek cat-back and a shielded cone filter. If it was possible to have the interior from a MK8 Fiesta ST with the exterior and engine from the MK7.5 I would have one in a heartbeat and run it until the end of time! I will say the whole experience has put me off ever buying from a major car dealership again and since then I've had six cars, all of which were purchased either from private sellers or smaller garages and dealerships who's good reputation is built on their customer service both before and post-sale.
I made the mistake of buying an n47 BMW, but the chain cost the same price my dad paid to fix the EGR valve on an Audi a3 so not as bad as I thought. There were a few other issues too. Love the car though and it gets compliments all the time. E92 3 Series M-sport
Awesome video JB, ironically I love seeing the videos that bring us young car enthusiasts back down to earth, because sure we can get an E60 M5 and it sounds appealing but maintenance and reliability will kill someone on a tight budget. The most unreliable car I ever owned was a W203 C230 Kompressor and I blame it on the fact that I bought it as a non runner with a blown headgasket and in retrospect, a junk block. I paid $1500 for it and spent $4k on it only to sell it for $1800 after giving up. Being 16 at the time I was beyond distraught. But now I own a C32 AMG which is maintenance needy but nothing breaks, only wear items such as fluids filters and bearings. Great car that I highly recommend as a reliable fast cheap car, though they say such things don’t exist lol
The issue is, people on a tight budget shouldn't be buying such cars. Going into ownership on something that was £60k plus new is always going to have the running costs of a £60k plus car. That won't stop them, depreciation allows for people to buy cars but not always allows them to afford to run them.
@Mike L, yes that’s my point exactly. However there are some great performers such as the Lexus IS350 that do great in every metric and are very affordable to own. However the problem is a 14yo seeing an E60 M5 and thinking that they can maintain it because a YT car list told them it’s a super cheap super sedan, when there’s no such thing in reality. That’s what I was saying.
In 2004 I bought a late 2000 Hyundai Tubron with 30000 miles and full dealer service history. The car was a great little 2 seater sports coupe and was great fun to drive. I then started to have cooling problems and loss of coolant. The main dealer said it was the radiator header was cracked where the filler pressure cap is located. The leak could not be repaired as the header was plastic and they needed to order it from Korea. 6weeks later the dealer said the car was ready. All was well until I did a 250 mile trip in one day and I was stranded on the highway with steam everywhere. It turned out that the multi outlet housing of the thermostat which also had the heater line conns was cracked, you guest right, plastic and had to get it from Korea. As the cost of air freighting these parts was a lot to say the least I asked the repair shop what else was plastic on the cooling system and it turned out that virtually every place a hose connected was plastic including 2 inline connectors when the heater pipes passed through the bulkhead. So I ordered them all and had them all replaced. I drove the car for a further 2 years with just regular servicing but never felt easy if I did any long trips. Put me off Korean cars ever since.
I own high millage 06 Impreza WRX with the 2.5l turbo engine, love the car and so far it hasn't let me down but I poured huge amount of money into pre-emptive maintenance and been changing oil every 3k miles or so
My new Triumph TR6 in the seventies was a mare! and later in life anything with a DSG gearbox. The DSG a brilliant piece of kit let down by an uninterested main dealer network. Nowadays the independent auto transmission specialist comes to the rescue!
Mine had issues and a coolant leak (which was expensive to fix) but that car never actually broke down or stopped me in the middle of the road! My e92 325i however has been a nightmare!
I had a Mazda6 MPS for several years and had no issues with it apart from killing a battery through lack of use due to a job change. Tyres weren't the cheapest as they were a bit of an odd size and hardish to find. Certainly a quick car with good handling.
Any R32 golf/A3 3.2 timing chain stretching. My A3 with the 3.2 engine did not reach 60 k mileage. Audi service manager not to repair it as cost of spares through roof and constant niggles after as so much of engine, gearbox and 4 wheel drive all had to be moved or taken out and not the same after! So I sold it for Ford focus ST with plastic band guaranteed 10 years /100K miles and they were right. Changed at 9 years, so why have vag timing chain stretching when an easy to change timing belt lasts more than twice the time/ mileage? Do you think I have ever bought another VAG car?
Would love a 123d performance and economy. I'm Really put off by Renault interiors it's so basic and city car like. I get that it's about the performance but not for me I like to sit in some comfort and have some in car tech, but if it was second car then maybe I wouldn't mind. I got an e87 118d and yes it has been the most unreliable care I've owned. So far have only had a 1.2 Corsa c and 1.6 astra H. Yes the chain on these bmw's isnt great well I think it's more the tensioner which was meant to be updated in 2010+ models however owners still have issues and some swap them out at 80-100k. If you found a 123d with a good service history (sooner than the stupid 15-20k intervals BMW recommended) and a chain kit replaced then all good. I say most unreliable but it's not fair as I got rid of the astra just before I would have issues with a load of suspension components. The BMW has had rear abs rings and sensors changed, clogged egr (so blanket and mapped out) front disk and pads (consumables), window switches replaced twice and most recently belt and crankshaft pulley. Next jobs coming up are exhaust Felix (why did BMW weld it 🤦♂️🫤) and rear shocks. Not bad for a car from 2010 with 163k on the clock
Should have seen this video coming after the last one 😄 I was expecting this to just be a list of Range Rovers, old Mercs and that sort of thing. R56 makes sense though, my favourite version of the new Mini by far but wouldn't touch one. The Mazda 6 MPS being unreliable is so disappointing since it's such a sexy car. RCZ R reliability is why the 308 GTi is on my shopping list instead (also because it has massage seats). Squeaky brakes and a few rattles though...that's how most sports cars come out of the factory! I might fix the 2 rattles in my car though, 1 in the driver's door and another behind my left ear which might just be something in the cubby hole by the engine. Reliability didn't put me off a Scooby, fuel economy did. That's mostly true of the fast Audis and BMWs too- although I imagine the E60 is one of the few V10s for which fuel isn't the main expense!
My wife has a Mini 2008 JCW, Daughter a 2008 Cooper S & Brother a 2007 - all have had no issues as they have been properly maintained - ie checking the oil (as they do like to drink a bit - 1/2 litre / 1000miles seems to be the average) once a month before it gets too low. The engine is shared with hot Pug's & Citroens - no one mentions these!
@@marklawrence2417 The Prince engine is a decent block, but it seems like it was sensitive to how it was fitted, or which ECU it had or something, since in some forms it was great but in others it just broke. I'm vaguely considering a 308 GTi and that's got a forged Prince 1.6 that puts out 270hp and seems very reliable. A litre of oil every 2k miles is a LOT though- I've not had to add oil in any car since 2008, when I wrote off my Fiat Punto (for which consumables include oil, exhausts, engines, the chassis, etc). I've had annual or bi-annual services so oil got replaced, but no top-ups from me. I don't even check tyres once a month in my porker, hasn't lost a full PSI in 18 months. Any car should be reliable if you look after it that much, but the fact you have to suggests they're not reliable! Still, if a car is worth it, proper maintenance isn't a lot of effort really. For anyone with space/time to work on their own car though, a JCW of that era seems like a fantastic choice.
My first car was my most unreliable car I’ve ever owned it was an old Vauxhall Corsa which hadn’t been maintained very well although my 2nd Corsa which I got from my Dad was trouble free but it was well maintained and I now drive a BMW 118d with the N47 engine which is ok as long as you service it regularly you can either agree or disagree with me on this but this is my own opinion
Yeah I had the death rattle r56, lost a fortune and believe BMW should be in court as at the time they said to me this was the only one they knew of! Two weeks after a service. This was years ago but would never ever buy a mini again. I’ve met at least 10 other people who has same issue. Astra VXR 2007 was also unreliable, luckily sold it before the turbo went after 30k!
I’ve had 1.2 T reg Clio head gasket go on me after 6 month ownership and a 6n2 polo gti gearbox blow up after a year. Since then I’ve had fiesta zetec and 2 st’s without any problems whatsoever with regular maintenance. My mate at work though had an mg zr 1.4 and Jesus, people go on about French build quality his mg was rotten inside out with 70k ish on the clock, everything from door locking mechanism, seatbelt locking mechanism, door latches, wing mirrors falling off, gauges on dash not working, rust anywhere you cared to look then finally the head gasket went weeks after the exhaust fell off around 80k miles
I have owned plenty of cars in my time, and the least unreliable cars I have owned are 1,BMW E93 M3, 2, Mazda RX8 and Mk 1 Golf GTI.. All came with a full service history, and max of two owners.. So be warned when buying used, and if your budget can afford it, get a reliable source to check it out before you buy!
Had to rewind to her you say subaru again. You sound like a samurai 😂 as a fellow Londoner it's pronounced soo ba roo. Ain't that why they're called scooby's? Scooby doo 🐕 right?I'm probably talking shit 😂 loving you vids 👍
Im currently on first car skoda fabia greenline 2 and its reliable but if to go by anything my mums owned has been a shit box vauxhall carlton(loved the look of that though and it shifted), rover metro(just a shitbox), ford ka(the lady bug shitbox) and a fiat punto(change the p to a c)
Had a 197 for a few years and it was to this day one of the most fun cars I have ever driven. It just was asbo and didn't cost me a ridiculous amount to keep running to be honest maybe I was lucky though
@@bwdrives The list of problems is endless with them. Injectors, turbos, hpfp, ecu, oil pumps, even taking bends too hard and too long can starve the engine of oil and seize them. I’ve seen ones just die and seize on start up for no reason🙃. S tronic box literally writes off most Audis with the first problem once out of warranty. Mechatronics or they just can’t fix them.
The Peugeot 1.6T is the same engine as the mini cooper s 1.6T with its problems. Just have the r53 supercharged engine and you're MUCH better off. Also the N47 In the 123D is the same engine as all x16D x18D and x20D. So any of the bmw ranges and mini ranges with that engine will all have the same problems and the timing chain is on the back like that C6 S6 so you'll have the same job to do there...
The Clio's are very strong cars, having owned mine for 4 years now. But have to agree when it comes to the gearboxes its a 50/50 chance, and if the previous owner abused the car a little too much then you screwed.
Worst car for reliability? 2001 BMW 330Ci Cab - under 100k on the clock, bought it at 11 years old with great service history & had cooling system issues, power steering, suspension falling apart, sensors, aircon packing up (even after a full refurb only 3 years before I got it)... all in 2 years. It was far worse than the 2000 Merc CL500 it replaced - thats saying something!
Bizarrely my two worst cars for reliability include the hallowed Skoda Octavia. I think I just got a lemon though. The other was a Citroen C2 VTR. I'd wanted the GT but they'd gone out of production at the time.
BMW 630i convertible roof for me was a huge problem sensors went in the roof cost over a grand nearly two to repair few months later further failure of roof sensors again told that they were different sensors??? Similar price to do. At the main dealer be warned
For me, my least reliable car was my Peugeot 207 diesel. Car didn't cist me much however, I spent 50% of what I paid for it within 1 year in repair bills 😬
Range Rover. They might look good and ha e a posh badge but you need very deep pockets to keep it running especially with regards to suspension and electrics.. 2 years worth of stupidity to keep it on the road... one learns by mistakes.
Reads posts on the internet, makes a video as gospel. My E60 M5 has been mostly fine in the last nigh on 30k miles, used more than most people use them. It's had a few issues but nothing that would cost more than a service for a VW Golf at a main dealer. No one posts about their car when it works, only when it isn't. Poor list this.
Ford Aspire. It was my first car and that thing was an absolute sh*tbox. It was something every week. Ironically, that is the only new car I've ever bought and it was more unreliable than any used car I've had that came after it, and I've had quite a few. That experience with that car is why I don't buy new cars.
I once bought my then girlfriend a 3yr old Citroen AX 1.5d with less than 30k on the clock for commuting to Uni. In the 4 months we had it, the injector pump went, head gasket and CV joint. I haven’t bought a French car since, what a bag of sh1te.
Ok, nobody is gonna top this. THE most unreliable car ever to exist is…. My old hand-me-down YUGO Zastava. The worst car ever, flooding engine, poor running, fuel guzzler, slow and the wheel literally sheered off due to poor quality parts.
Next you could do the most reliable cars with sport aspiration/tuning that you can rely on 👌
N47 - Bmw's most unreliable engine ever?

I feel that unreliable cars and cars that always have something that needs "fixing" have way more personality and character than reliable cars 🤣
Ah ha, my new list of cars to avoid, thanks ! Was delighted there were no Skodas on the nasty list !! J
Bad experiences with vw 1.8t engines oil pump failures
Had a 197 for a few years and it was to this day one of the most fun cars I have ever driven. It just was asbo and didn't cost me a ridiculous amount to keep running to be honest maybe I was lucky though
Anything with a n54 engine. Or an s tronic box.
N54 owners will usually say the pain is worth it😂
@@bwdrives The list of problems is endless with them.
My neighbours keep buying range rovers, have had a few different ones within a short amount of time…. Side note I want a wrx sti hatch baddd tho
For me, my least reliable car was my Peugeot 207 diesel. Car didn't cist me much however, I spent 50% of what I paid for it within 1 year in repair bills 😬
Thank God that my favourite and dream Mk2 Subaru impreza wrx sti has the 2.0l engine instead of the 2.5 a bit more reliable thank God
Range Rover. They might look good and ha e a posh badge but you need very deep pockets to keep it running especially with regards to suspension and electrics.. 2 years worth of stupidity to keep it on the road... one learns by mistakes.
Good video man.. you've finally shown and agree BMW's are unreliable..
Stick to 6 cylinder petrols, service them regularly (more so if you abuse them) and they’ll give you hundreds of thousands of miles of fun
Do second hand cars under £10k with the best sound systems (music not engine)
JCW is more than a second faster than 7.8 btw
123D is the car with most km ever had 385k km
Wait, not one Range Rover product on this list?
Those Mazdas also rust to hell
All Volvos I’ve had, have had so many expensive electrical problems
My 207 gti god I spent so much money on that car
Same engine as that mini I guess
A Plymouth was the most unreliable car I ever had!
The mini is FWD not RWD
I love these videos, but why do you keep calling engines “blocks” 😂
Reads posts on the internet, makes a video as gospel.
My E60 M5 has been mostly fine in the last nigh on 30k miles, used more than most people use them. It's had a few issues but nothing that would cost more than a service for a VW Golf at a main dealer. No one posts about their car when it works, only when it isn't.
Poor list this.
Turbo 😊😊😊😊pls
Ford Aspire. It was my first car and that thing was an absolute sh*tbox. It was something every week. Ironically, that is the only new car I've ever bought and it was more unreliable than any used car I've had that came after it, and I've had quite a few. That experience with that car is why I don't buy new cars.
The most unreliable car I've ever owned is a 2002 audi a8 d2 with the 2.5tdi engine
Skoda Fabia VRS 1.4
My Dad has got the "Exact BMW" issue...🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 #StickWithTOYOTA
Not many complaints about Honda and Toyota lol
Pls turbo
I once bought my then girlfriend a 3yr old Citroen AX 1.5d with less than 30k on the clock for commuting to Uni. In the 4 months we had it, the injector pump went, head gasket and CV joint. I haven’t bought a French car since, what a bag of sh1te.
Ok, nobody is gonna top this. THE most unreliable car ever to exist is…. My old hand-me-down YUGO Zastava. The worst car ever, flooding engine, poor running, fuel guzzler, slow and the wheel literally sheered off due to poor quality parts.
lol i have e60 m5 with 400k km 😄
Most unreliable car I’ve owned to date, 2011 Audi A5.
6/10 cars in the list are German made, think of this video the next time you hear "German Engineering".
👍
First! ☺️
Frightening.
Why does he say Subaru like that 💀
