I think I agree with you on everything you are saying about box goggles. Have you had a chance to try the Fat Shark Scouts? They seem like they are trying to hit the mark you describe, however I bet you would run into the same issue I did. They just didn't fit my face and the lens area is too small so the bottom edge of the screen was blurry because I had to look through the bevel of the lens area to see the screen. And like you said, if you ignore the size and weird looks you get wearing the box goggles, they really do and can offer a great experience. That is exactly why I stuck with my first box goggles for over 2 years. They just worked great and were better for me than any Fat Sharks I ever tried ( including the HDO's ) More competition for mid/high end ( but still affordable ) box goggles would be great.
I rocked the EV800D and those are a very capable and inexpensive solution to anyone "lukewarm" in this hobby.. I used them for 1 year before investing in the transition to my fatsharks! ❤EV800D still.!!!
I bought some Aomway Commander V1S goggles, but my caveman-like IPD meant I was forced to go back to my EV800D's since no binocular goggle currently on the market goes above 69mm. Apart from the extra weight hanging off the front, they work just as well despite being nearly one-third the price. One of my favorite features of the EV800D was how easy it is to clean and service since the face pad and lens can be separated from the rest of the unit. And if you needed to fix it for some reason, you removed two screws and the board would slide right out. One issue I can see right away is the EV800DM's don't look nearly as easy to open up and clean. The foam padding is all one piece, and opening that portion of the goggle looks difficult or impossible without destroying that padding. Unless these goggles also have some sort of release that allows you to separate the screen portion from the lens portion without disassembling the lens portion first, that could be a dealbreaker for someone like me. My scalp is a winter wonderland, so I find that I need to open my goggles up periodically to clear dust and debris out of them. I used to have a pair of VR D2 Pro's that I picked because they were more comfortable than the EV800D's and had a bigger, external battery, but the difficulty of reassembly after cleaning was their undoing. It could take 30-60 minutes of fiddling to get the screen and boards to line up just right, and if you got it wrong, you could end up with the button board pushing into the back of the LCD screen, causing ripples during use, or worse, you could break a resistor off the board (ask me how I know) since they're right on the edge of the board. This is what caused me to suck it up and switch to the EV800Ds, even though they are far less comfortable and have shorter battery life.
zorilla0 - you can readily get rid of the internal battery and add a pigtail and connector to an external battery, noticeable difference in weight since the batt is out front.
@@robertp7209 I briefly owned another set of EV800D's over a year ago that I bought used from eBay, but it arrived with a dead battery and a scratched lens (don't stuff things inside the goggles before shipping them, people. I know it looks like free storage, but this is what happens). I got a partial refund on them, so I decided to replace the battery and resell them since I wasn't fed up with my VR D2's yet and still found them more comfortable. While waiting on a replacement battery from the only store on the planet selling them (in China, of course), I messed around with the goggles with an external LiPo, but didn't notice much of a difference in weight without the internal battery installed. The stock battery is surprisingly thin and light. It was within a few grams of my GNB 550mAh 2S LiPos.
zorilla0 - I hear you, but since the battery is all the way out front the weight tends to lever the goggles down. Overall weight is good, but loss of the lever weight factor felt better on the lower part of my face. And i used a 4000 mah batt so plenty of flights and I can charge it with a proper lipo charger.
For the versatility of the removable screen, and the ease of use while wearing glasses I've been really happy with my fxt viper goggles. Have you considered looking into that periscope style of mirror arrangement instead of a focusing lenses? Some people are put off by the look of the them, but the actual viewing experience is impressive. It uses a 5" screen, but I can imagine how good a similar setup could be with a 2-3" hd quality screen.
I love the ev800d....might try these also but I actually prefer the larger FOV....Bob - did you try the Fatshark Scout? They did attempt to move the box goggle field fwd a little with a 4.3" screen and nicer design...I felt some weird lag with them tho...
@@Kabab I think its cool you are open minded enough to pursue the box format and suggest its improvement. I sometimes feel like people are brainwashed into the poor experience format of eye goggles...I completely agree and would also love to design something...I think it could be made to be a lot cooler, compact and cheaper than the current options...
Fat Sharks are at least smaller and easier to pack/carry around than box goggles. I still use my FXT Viper (after replacing everything else I started with in FPV) because I love it as a goggle - the only drawback is that it's HUGE. When I travel with quads it's the single biggest pain to deal with out of all the junk I bring with me.
Man, I've been back and forth over my first real pair of goggles for the past week (using Emax). I've tried my friends FatShark Focal V2 goggles with no luck - no focus adjustment, osd was blurry. Today i was going to pull the trigger on the FS Scouts considering the original 800s weren't as nice and I'd like to use 16:9 cine quads in the future, but now I'm back to square one! Thanks for the review, you're very picky and I appreciate your reviews. Thanks to your TH Freestyle 2 review I snagged it as my next step and dedicated park quad.
You can make your own goggles using the ROTG2 with diversity and a phone with a 5 inch screen and cheap VR goggles frame, which has better resolution than any FPV goggles or small screens.
That can work, and it's what I did when I first started out. I noticed a big difference in the latency when I upgraded though. For cruising around it can work just fine, but I wouldn't recommend it for flying fast in tight spaces.
I love this. I hated my skyzone v2,; probably because my eyes are too far apart. Bought skyzone sj01's which were good but screen failed within a couple of months. Got some fxt viper goggles which are great for people who wear spectacles - great screen, great reception, really durable and fantastic DVR. I'm ordering some of these ev200dm, so friends can ride along too & as a backup. To have two sets of very useable sets of goggles for half the price of premium goggles is better for a novice, amateur flyer like me. Thanks for this
Have you looked at the Betafpv box goggle? I have it, but I want to get something that has more range but I can't use the binocular style stuff. Feels like I'm stuck at 200m with what I have, and I want to get to 1000m.
with such smol rsolution, just upgrade the DVR on any okay setup to record 60 fps well. It would be a winner. The components cant be that much more $. Looking at the powerplay seperate dvr and any set up would be great minus the 4+ batteries you need to worry about everytime you take off...
Kabab, have you tried on the Fatshark Scout box goggles?? They seem to me to be pretty close to what you described (except for the LCD screens instead of OLED; but it's a great LCD screen).
hey kabab, what do u think about the fatshark scouts? from what i heard, they r really nice box goggles. the only reason i am not buying them is because u cant fit other receiver modules in there. (I think thats necessary for any expensive fpv goggle to make it futureproof) other question: have you noticed problems with currupted dvr with the 800dm ? andyRC brought that to the table in his review of the 800dm. anyway very nice vid
The 800dm isn't perfect by any standard. The DVR on mine works fine however. The scout is unusable to me. The lens system on it is really annoying and doesn't work well with my eyes and I don't think any human eyes. I like the eachine much more
What type of antenna (sma) connector does it use? Connector type not listed on the product page and the goggles aren't pictured without antennas (of course). I too have love for the old 800Ds, but that is tempered by the fact that I have had to remove the antennas to carry them in my bag (they are HUGE), and as a result, I have worn out the SMA female connectors on them. The 800Ds work fine for flying in the backyard, but tons of breakup if I get a good distance away at the park. I had actually just bought the Fatshark Scouts as a replacement and I am getting used to flying 4:3 cameras through it. Wish I had seen this vid a bit earlier but c'est la vie....
Have you tested the Rotation feature of these goggles? Rotation is extremely usefull whenever we must mount our camera upside down on the aircraft to get right side up viewing. The EV800D came out with this feature in the menu, but it did not work, and was dropped from the menu in later shipments. Please check your EV800DM out and report your results! Thanks
@@Kabab Rotation is not well documented for the EV800DM, but if you check the screenshots in the ads, you will notice Rotation listed in the menu of adjustments. Hopefully it will also be listed on your own model.
KababFPV your EV800DM had one of the clearest video I’ve seen. It’s because of the rush VTX plus good antenna? The Omni directional antenna you using the stock version?
It actually uses both antennas? Their VR006 with dual antennas was a lie, only one is wired to the internal receiver. I've been a HD2 user for nearly 3 years and I love the immersion the 50 deg FOV gives, despite the edges being a little blurry, but after watching the reviews from Joshua & Steele of the HDO2's it's planted a little seed that says "you want those ones now..." :)
Good to hear they're not trying to con their customers again :) They did modify the VR006 to only have one antenna socket, eventually. I bet it was more to do with discovering they could save money by not putting in the 2nd socket and two antennas in the box than actually saying "we screwed up".
Of course it is not as high, false advertising once again. It's 500 x 300 3" screen, the IDENTICAL screen as in Vr006 and the discontinued VR D3 (there it was also falsely specified)
Hey guys I am trying to record. In the manual it says you can replay your video in menu, but I go to menu and I find nothing. How do I record. I have the c 10 sd card as they recommend.
I use box googles Fxt vipers and for my kid to watch me fly e800d, the only thing missing on most box googles is the fan, since in fall/winter they fog up very quick, even tought of hacking a fan in but I would get tons of light coming also in thru the fan blades :( any suggestions Bob?
@@Kabab Its not the eyes that are fogging it up mate, its breathing! there is quite a gap between the nose rubber cover and your face, and since the googles are big on your head they fog up in 1-2 mins, and even with constant wipe of the screen you loose concentration and quit flyin coz you dont see anything clear :(
@@Kabab I just put up a video on the breakdown on it. It's really easy to take apart and the spec sheet says it can accept up to 3s for power. I couldn't check that yet to see if has a voltage regulator.
Kabab i would like to know if you have taste the problem a lot of peoole says about this googles, thats is, when the googles loose completely the signal, the dvr video get corrupted and you cant save it anymore, so... im thinking to grab this googles but... that problem is making me think to much about, i respect your opinion a lot and i would like to know your opinion about
@@Kabab you can see it perfectly in the review of AndyRc and i have seen from not many people but some out of youtube aswell, i would ask you to see it if you have a minute if you could do the favor
In your previous video about skyzone sky02 you told that dominator v3's are better than hdo for you. In this video you tell that ev800dm are better than dom v3's. SOOO, ev800dm are better that HDO???????
Yes that is correct. Hdo2 is finally better but this $80 goggle has a similar viewing experience as the $500 or whatever HDO. Of course overall goggle is not quite the same but specifically the viewing experience on these is pretty excellent compared to anything else
@@Kabab thanks, I have the iflight megabee v2, I think the vtx has 500 mw. But I see in betaflight to cli it shows me vtx power 0 and it can't be changed, may be that's why with my betafpv vr1 and upgraded antennas I can't get more than 50 meters.
A premium box goggle MUST have a module bay in my opinion. I have HD3’s but my face is wide and my vision isn’t great so I end up squinting the entire time I’m using them, just for the privilege of being able to use whatever module is hot at the time.
What is the warranty on these? If it is only 30 days, like the Eachine EV200D, it's still not cheap enough to be worth the gamble, imho. Had my EV200D goggles for less than 60 days when, a few days ago, the right display failed. Banggood said that's the life expectancy for the product, and i am out of luck, and out of $300.
I suppose that's confirmation that it is 30 days. It would be tough for me to endorse such a product. Thats just me though.. Definitely loving my fleet of TP's, and TP3's. Cheers. Thanks for the reply.
@@Kabab Youre right. I guess im just stuck on my $300 loss with the EV200D. $70 is much less of a gamble, but after getting burned, it's terribly unlikely Ill buy anything eachine again, and Banggood one hundred percent will never see another dollar from me. And the fact is, before the year is up, theyd have made back (from me alone,) any loss they suffered by providing support, and then some. Tempting to just go DJI. My support experience with them over the years has been great. If they ever release light weight HD fpv components for 2-3" micros, Im all in and wont look back. Between being caught up in the Frsky ACCESS debacle, and being burned by BG, it's hard to feel any loyalty.
phone screens are actually not very cheap. Also, making the video processor to run the screens below their native resolution is expensive. They're also usually too low of resolution unless you go with the 2k or 4k displays....which are much more expensive
I feel like for a "ride along" set of goggles, a vr600 clone would be fine. Can be had for 30 bucks and is completely fine for spectating, even flying with. Spending more than $60 on a pair of box goggles is a waste of money imo. The increase of visual/build quality doesnt justify the increase in price in alot of these box goggles. To me, the best thing to do for a beginner is get a cheap set of box goggles, fly with them, see if you want to continue with the hobby and then save up to get a binocular style set.
@KababFPV: 1.7 mm barrel connector dates from decades before USB was invented. Every AC/DC adapter from early 80's had one of those besides 3.5 mm, 2.1 mm etc. on the 'cross plug'. You can search for *1.7 mm to USB* or for *Orange Pi PC power cable* on Aliexpress and you will find those cables for under $1.
@KababFPV: 1.7 mm jack is pretty standard and is still used in many new devices like for example in Orange Pi PC and RC832 video receiver. It is much more durable and reliable for powering the devices than any USB connector. Any barrel connector is always better than USB for powering the device because it is DC power connector. You don't have to have an old power adapter but having all kinds of standard cable adapters is a must.
@@Kabab that's a bummer :( it seems promising, apart from the big screen and some ghosting issues apparently caused be the strange optics. maybe a next iteration fixes these problems, than it would be almost what you described
Thanks for this. Yah know I admit I was a little embarrassed that I still fly ev800d goggles. They just work the best for my eyes with my glasses in there. I really dislike the tiny fatshark screens, but maybe with diopters my experience would be different. I mentioned that to LeDrib and he flat out said "Box goggles >ARE< better, they always have been. Fatshark mainly wanted to make goggles look cooler." So I've been needing to upgrade for a long time, but only because I've beat the daylights out of mine after 1000s of flights, Maybe I will try these again. ;)
Box goggles can absolutely be better than goggles. As drib said, fatshark just tried to make them cool looking....so everyone followed suit for some dumb reason. That being said, I don't think having an enormous screen is very good. I especially like these ec800dm because they have a 4:3 screen and it's not enormous. Definitely not small, but not as big as most other box goggles.
With all these incoming bino style goggles coming to market and they’re, in my opinion, inflated price tag it makes one wander why box goggles aren’t more popular? Is it because we strive for the most expensive thinking it has to be the best? I have recently purchased the 030 and although the screens are definitely a lot better than the original HDO I still can’t get both screens crystal clear. Yes I have perfect vision and have been flying since the early days. I still on occasion fly with my eachine goggles 2 and just like my dom v2’s wander why have I waisted so much money on iterations between when these came out and what I’m using now? I’m with you bob. A box goggle with a oled would be great. Less FOV. I’m not shooting a documentary for discovery. I’m racing forward. I mean really how much fov does a fighter jet have? Or a race car driver? Rambling in the gym with pre workout flowing! Have a good Saturday!
@@flyingmonkey8245 DJI has more sense than trying to copy somebody else's bad idea. But binoculars are the standard in the industry up until this point so we'll see what happens
These are definitely better. I haven't tried the recent fatshark box goggles but there isn't any other dog tried that even approaches the experience of my dominator v3. This is Cinque terre is better than my dominator v3
I'm actually working on new ones but this is the xair from trueRC. Probably the single best all around size vs performance antenna I've ever used for video
Raw video looks worse than the fatshark DVR but when viewed on a phone with a small screen, it looks better than the fatshark DVR....so yeah it's about as good as the Fatshark
Check out some videos on the DJI system. If you're new to these things, you'd probably be pretty disgusted by what we had been using before...analog which is what these goggles are. I'd recommend DJI if you're willing to spend the money up front. Well worth it.

RCing in SC I loved mine, only issue was the screen freezing.. huge deal breaker
I was supposed to get a scout but it never showed up 🤷🏻♂️
@@Kabab I think its cool you are open minded enough to pursue the box format and suggest its improvement. I sometimes feel like people are brainwashed into the poor experience format of eye goggles...I completely agree and would also love to design something...I think it could be made to be a lot cooler, compact and cheaper than the current options...
Have you tried fatshark scouts sounds a lot like the goggles you’re describing minus the oled screen
Except they are 16:9 :(

So where can we preorder the kababOLED box goggle? Haha
I wish but I can't get these manufacturers to do anything for me
@@Kabab disappointing, as I am the same as you I prefer box goggles th e y work much better for me.
Hope you’ve been having some fun, man! Stay Cool... Cuz having fun is the only rule.
Great review Sir. May I know what type of antennas are you using on your EV800DM?? TQ
You can make your own goggles using the ROTG2 with diversity and a phone with a 5 inch screen and cheap VR goggles frame, which has better resolution than any FPV goggles or small screens.
Doesn't that introduce an awful lot of latency, using your phone as an FPV screen?
@@licensetodrive9930 surprisingly little. You probably wouldn't want to race with it though.
That can work, and it's what I did when I first started out. I noticed a big difference in the latency when I upgraded though. For cruising around it can work just fine, but I wouldn't recommend it for flying fast in tight spaces.
Check out the screen on the Palm smart phone. I wonder if that might work for your goggle design.
Unfortunately too low resolution
Awesome review, Bob! 😃
I pretty much agree with you! 😊
Great review ! Thanks! I am just waiting those googles to arrive from mail.
Kabab, have you tried on the Fatshark Scout box goggles?? They seem to me to be pretty close to what you described (except for the LCD screens instead of OLED; but it's a great LCD screen).
I was supposed to get a scout but it never showed up. dunno?
agreed on all counts..just got a pair and they feel so great. it's just easy to use.
7:30 English is a hard language 😂
lol sometimes i need to restart and forget to edit out
I am flying my quad using ev800d as monitor till now
Andy RC seems to like the old ev 200d's any thought on that
hey kabab, what do u think about the fatshark scouts? from what i heard, they r really nice box goggles. the only reason i am not buying them is because u cant fit other receiver modules in there.
I like the eachine much more
ok thx for the answer I think I will buy the 800dm now
wondering how the dji googles with the analog mod works out too
Have you tried the new Fatshark Scout? Box style
Haven't. Will try to find some soon
Which kind of antenna connector does EV800DM have?
7:33 there is a strange editing flaw where you 3 times start with the same sentence ;)
sometimes I need to restart but forget to edit it out. I shoot and edit really really quickly.
It's got SMA connectors on it. Not rpsma
Thanks
I didn't even know this did that.
@@Kabab
Rotation is not well documented for the EV800DM, but if you check the screenshots in the ads, you will notice Rotation listed in the menu of adjustments. Hopefully it will also be listed on your own model.
Thanks for the review. What is the antenna are you using it with? Especially the patch antenna :D
That's the trueRC antenna. Some of the best antennas in the industry.
KababFPV your EV800DM had one of the clearest video I’ve seen. It’s because of the rush VTX plus good antenna? The Omni directional antenna you using the stock version?
KababFPV wow true RC is expensive 😂
It actually uses both antennas? Their VR006 with dual antennas was a lie, only one is wired to the internal receiver.
I've been a HD2 user for nearly 3 years and I love the immersion the 50 deg FOV gives, despite the edges being a little blurry, but after watching the reviews from Joshua & Steele of the HDO2's it's planted a little seed that says "you want those ones now..." :)
Yes I have modded an Ev800d which is the base of this Google and there are 2 receivers. It's real diversity
Good to hear they're not trying to con their customers again :)
They did modify the VR006 to only have one antenna socket, eventually. I bet it was more to do with discovering they could save money by not putting in the 2nd socket and two antennas in the box than actually saying "we screwed up".
I want cheap hd. Don't care if i look "cool". I use ev800d now, thumbs up.
Thanks. With which camera did you record the main shot of the EVM800DM?
My phone. I believe it was a Note 29 ultra at the time
Is the resolution really as high as stated ? I’ve heard it’s actually lower.
Hard to verify but it looks at least as good as my Dom v3
Of course it is not as high, false advertising once again. It's 500 x 300 3" screen, the IDENTICAL screen as in Vr006 and the discontinued VR D3 (there it was also falsely specified)
Ivo Stefancic someone looked up the resolution of the panel used. It’s a 960x480 apparently.
@@jeffro1005 yeah I wouldn't believe that. 😅

hey I bought this after watching ur video, thanks kabab, this is pretty good,
can you tell us more about your antenna setup? Great review. Mine came in yesterday. First pair.
I like the Xair antenna the most. you almost don't need anything else other than that but I add any omni as well just to be safe
Man I was more interested in watching your moves than in the goggle review haha... Awesome flying 👍👌
I use box googles Fxt vipers and for my kid to watch me fly e800d, the only thing missing on most box googles is the fan, since in fall/winter they fog up very quick, even tought of hacking a fan in but I would get tons of light coming also in thru the fan blades :( any suggestions Bob?
ah, hmmm well on this goggle the lens is kinda far from your eyes so not such a big deal?
@@Kabab Its not the eyes that are fogging it up mate, its breathing! there is quite a gap between the nose rubber cover and your face, and since the googles are big on your head they fog up in 1-2 mins, and even with constant wipe of the screen you loose concentration and quit flyin coz you dont see anything clear :(
What antennas work with this, and what recommend? Good ones, that can give a nice boost.
The Xair antenna is the best performing analog antenna I've ever used but it's still not exactly night and day better. Just a little bit
you should try the fatshark scout and compare them to this one.

Good review for the eachine. How it's doing with the range? Of coarse with patch and lollipop antenna. Can I get at least 500 meters?
Yeah that shouldn't be an issue with a decent vtx
@@Kabab thanks, I have the iflight megabee v2, I think the vtx has 500 mw. But I see in betaflight to cli it shows me vtx power 0 and it can't be changed, may be that's why with my betafpv vr1 and upgraded antennas I can't get more than 50 meters.
A premium box goggle MUST have a module bay in my opinion.
I have HD3’s but my face is wide and my vision isn’t great so I end up squinting the entire time I’m using them, just for the privilege of being able to use whatever module is hot at the time.
of course using the modules
I was gonna buy this but then I saw it had a pro titer charging connector not a micro USB is there an updated version that has micro USB??
Unfortunately there isn't to my knowledge. This is still the very best budget Option
What is the warranty on these?
If it is only 30 days, like the Eachine EV200D, it's still not cheap enough to be worth the gamble, imho. Had my EV200D goggles for less than 60 days when, a few days ago, the right display failed. Banggood said that's the life expectancy for the product, and i am out of luck, and out of $300.
these kinda eachine products usually hold up but if I have issues I'll definitely let everyone know
I suppose that's confirmation that it is 30 days. It would be tough for me to endorse such a product. Thats just me though..
Definitely loving my fleet of TP's, and TP3's. Cheers. Thanks for the reply.
@@24kJames the alternative is hundreds more. many many many people won't pay that.
You can use oled screen from those new 2 screen phones. It would be like 60$ and not that big
phone screens are actually not very cheap. Also, making the video processor to run the screens below their native resolution is expensive. They're also usually too low of resolution unless you go with the 2k or 4k displays....which are much more expensive
have you tried the skyzone cobra x and s models?
I haven't but I'd strongly recommend dji. STRONGLY. The vista vtx isn't in stock yet since Covid but it should be at the end of this month
@@Kabab using fatshark hd3's atm. might save some $$$ and wait for dji system in the future. yeh, it would be nice :P
But these are the best box goggles I've ever used 💁🏻♂️
Wow. Can you please measure the inside size so I can know which glasses will fit inside? Thanks

Thank you for your honest review.
How is a bog-standard barrel jack considered 'proprietary'?
it's not, it's just that nothing else in all the crap I've got uses it so if I loose that cable, no more charging. USB is universal however...
@@ChupoCro but everyone already has USB wires. Nobody has early 90s power adapters anymore and they would need to be the right voltage too. 🤷🏻♂️
So what are the antena's you use on your quad and on these goggles

Thanks for this. Yah know I admit I was a little embarrassed that I still fly ev800d goggles. They just work the best for my eyes with my glasses in there. I really dislike the tiny fatshark screens, but maybe with diopters my experience would be different. I mentioned that to LeDrib and he flat out said "Box goggles >ARE< better, they always have been. Fatshark mainly wanted to make goggles look cooler."
So I've been needing to upgrade for a long time, but only because I've beat the daylights out of mine after 1000s of flights, Maybe I will try these again.
So, I wonder if you can mode another screen on those or in ev800d??
? if you find one that's good, why not just make a whole new pair
@@Kabab So (cause I'm noob) will an oled screen work with this circuit? (Thx for your time)
no I don't think so
With all these incoming bino style goggles coming to market and they’re, in my opinion, inflated price tag it makes one wander why box goggles aren’t more popular? Is it because we strive for the most expensive thinking it has to be the best? I have recently purchased the 030 and although the screens are definitely a lot better than the original HDO I still can’t get both screens crystal clear. Yes I have perfect vision and have been flying since the early days. I still on occasion fly with my eachine goggles 2 and just like my dom v2’s wander why have I waisted so much money on iterations between when these came out and what I’m using now? I’m with you bob.
