Just wanted to quickly shout out Len Carlson, the voice actor who portrayed Ganon. Not only was he the first VA to voice Loki and Quicksilver in the old school 60s Marvel cartoons, he also later voiced Hugo and Q in Street Fighter 3 Third Strike.
Old man gamer here... The MarioBros Super Show premiered around late 80s and ran early in the morning at least out here in Central Valley CA along with Captain N sometimes. The Mario Cartoon segment was basically a combo of Mario 1+2, then there was a seperate Mario3 series, then a seperate MarioWorld series, and then a live action King Koopa Show
So Ganon’s portals to the “underworld” are the shows take on dungeons. In the original manuals of Zelda 1 the main area was the “overworld” and the dungeons the “underworld.” So the DiC cartoon interpreted this more literally, with the underworld being Ganon’s realm/domain and the dungeon entrances something Ganon can just magically summon at whim.

Every Friday, the cartoon portion of the SMBSS was an episode of Zelda. I looked forward to it every week. The scarcity made it feel so special. Also, I was 11, so the fact that Link was an absolute douche went right over my head.
There was also a comic; if I remember correctly, one of them had the "I am Error" guy as a character that Link starts a fight with but gets his ass kicked.
10 year old me found the box set of this series in a Barnes and Nobles. Never knew there was a LoZ cartoon and immediately bought and watched the whole thing. I no longer have the box, but I do have the DVD's to make sure I always have the copy. It was fun to watch as a kid, but I do agree this series isn't good, but it's not horrendous. Though whenever I tell people of the series and offer to let them watch it, I do tell them "Hey this is based off of LoZ 1 and 2, so its older and not all that good" as a warning because this show makes for a good drinking game.
I remember watching this as a kid in the early 90s. I want to say it was around 1990 - 1991. Part of the reason the series was so short is actually because it only aired on Fridays, Monday to Thursday were Mario cartoons. On top of that, while the show did start as The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, with the live action segments starring Captain Lou Albano as Mario and Danny Wells as Luigi, it was eventually repackaged as Club Mario, which was hosted by two teenagers named "Tommy Treehugger" and "Co-MC". It's just as 90s as it sounds.
the white knight episode is hilarious. Link gets dissed the whole episode and when he does save Zelda he says “she’s not worth saving but i’m doing it anyway” 😭
This show made my Fridays. Like you said, getting a cartoon this accurate was a rarity, and compared to the weird movie and genre parodies of the first Mario cartoon, the Zelda cartoon was especially exceptional. It also exemplifies an era that Zelda has long left: 80s sword and sorcery. I miss this aesthetic so much, and I really wish the franchise would revisit it sometime.
I remember catching the end of an episode of _The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3_ on TV and begging my mom to record the show in that time slot the next week. There was actually a series of comics based of Nintendo properties. From what I understand, this is what this cartoon and “Captain N: the Game Master” where loosely based off. I say loosely because I remember the Zelda comic being way better. It did a great job actually using themes from the games and plots that made a little bit more sense. Like one where Link actually tries training Zelda or a what if where Link gets a hold of the triforce of power. They never had an over-arching plot in any way. Basically short story format. Have no idea why they didn’t use those stories but this is a cartoon from ‘89 and it definitely has that 80s/90s flair
Assuming they got people who are die hard Zelda fans who know the lore inside and out, I wouldn't mind seeing them take another shot at a Zelda series.
So the big reason for Zelda and Link's uh "chemistry?" in this show is actually because of forgotten Bruce Willis vehicle, Moonlighters, which is the content that Adults are suppose to get out of this. I feel like this Link and Sprite deserve each other. They both base their entire personalities around making pushy romantic remarks towards people who clearly do not appreciate their attitude. Link definitely deserves tasting his own medicine, that's for sure. At any rate, I wonder if the frog episode intended to reference the Bubble enemies' ability to curse Link with the inability to use his sword. It'll nice if Nintendo do a brand new animated Zelda series. Now that the Super Mario Bros movie has reached box office record, or they could make a animated movie.

A crossover between so many NES series would be so cool on paper, but it was completely butchered by Captain N into complete garbage.
