  • New EVs are expensive! BYD, the Chinese automaker known for inexpensive EVs, recently said its opening a production facility in Mexico. With production capacity in a NAFTA country, it's possible that BYD plans on entering the U.S. and Canadian market.
    The Seagull, currently made and sold by BYD, has a starting price around $10,000 USD for a complete car. We take a look at the Seagull, and explore it both inside and out to see if there are any real tradeoffs for a truly affordable EV, and speculate on if BYD will be building its dreams with U.S. customers soon.

    I drive a BYD Dolphin here in Brazil. That's another very well executed hatchback. Formerly the cheapest EV from BYD (now the Seagull is cheaper still). I can't praise it enough. Such a great little EV. Very efficient, great warranty, well priced (even when compared to traditional ICE models). I hope you guys in North America get some of their models sooner rather than later. @@seveglider8406 Drove the Seagull last week, I'm not new to EV's and have driven some recent ones (BMW iX, Audi Q8 eTron, Volvo XC40 and Jaguar iPace)
      I swear the Seagull feels just as well if not better put together than those, the design gets lots of compliments (I drove a light metallic blue), handling is soft but very sure footed and performance off the line makes a BMW M3 F80 feel somewhat sluggish.
      Here in Colombia we only get the dual motor 520hp version, it's priced a a bit over 60k USD, for our market that's a great price, about the same as a mid range 4 cylinder BMW 330 or a base C Class.

      @@larryc1616 Import fees. Countries impose high import fees on Chinese cars, especially the West. Mostly this is because there's great suspicion regarding China subsidizing and forcing the market to be cheap, in capitalism this is called unfair competition and it breaks the system. It's not like it's the first time, China in the past suddenly FLODDED western markets with cheap steel, this led to many Western companies going bankrupt. It's doing the same now with solar panels and cars. Now you think "omg that's amazing! Better for us consumers in the West!" It's not that simple, mostly in the short term. Relying only on China because it's cheap for the West will lead to trade imbalances, job loss, and economic dependence (issues with security of the products and things like not being possible to enforce working conditions or quality standards etc).
      The solution is: tax them until prices are similar to western manufactures, which leads to consumers continuing to have choice of product (important for capitalism) because now you can buy a western one or a Chinese one for a similar price, and if you prefer the Chinese one, it will only boost tax revenue of the government which will benefit you and me. Note that states don't ban Chinese products (except the US, but the US is always special) they just want to prevent economic damage from these "flood products" exactly what China wants to happen. China is not doing it out of the goodness of their heart, ask all the African countries that are heavily indebted to China because of their goodness.

    The BYD Seagull (or Dolphin Mini as it's called here) was the best selling EV here in Brazil for the month of March (it was released on the last days of February, so March was the first month it was effectively on sale).
    Second in the best selling EVs list was its big brother, the BYD Dolphin.
    BYD is already outselling Ford here in Brazil. And I don't mean just Ford EVs, but all Ford cars, including its internal combustion cars.
    This is what American politicians should be aware of. If US carmakers can't get their EVs to compete with the Chinese ones in both price and quality there's a good chance Chinese EVs will kill US car exports, not to mention China - which has the largest car market in the world, roughly twice as large as the US car market - might retaliate by closing its market to US-made vehicles or even prevent US carmakers from operating factories in China. Protectionism for the US auto industry, thus, could very well end weakening that industry in the medium to long term.

    • @larryevans6739
      @larryevans6739 Месяц назад +2

      Looking at the BYD King (aka Chazor) PHEV, I think it could sell very well in Brazil and potentially become the best selling sedan in the country if priced right (it is only slightly more expensive than the Seagull in China).
      But here is what I'm thinking about regarding Brazil: BYD is moving very fast. They are replacing platforms every 3-4 years, whereas a typical automaker takes multiple times as long. Not just styling refreshes, which they do regularly, but new platforms. For example, the Song Plus/Seal U EV (launced in 2021 in China) is scheduled to be replaced with a new generation on the new EV 4.0 platform in China in August, a matter of months after being launched in some global markets. That does not give them much time to recouperate the investment...
      So, could BYD potentially be planning to ship all the current generation platform tooling to countries like Brazil, to update and manufacture for local markets? Other automakers have done similar in the past. This would let BYD take costs down even further. And, given their rate of updates, their cars would still be more advanced than most competitors.

    • @FabioCapela
      @FabioCapela Месяц назад +2

      @@larryevans6739 I'm not sure reusing old tooling to make the previous platform in Brazil (or any other of their factories) would be beneficial to BYD. The new platform isn't just about improving the technical characteristics, it also costs less to manufacture.
      EVs are still at the point where design and manufactures techniques are evolving crazily fast, bringing manufacturing costs down for those that can stay at the cutting edge. Anyone not on the cutting edge of manufacture is stuck with higher production costs, meaning they will likely have to sacrifice margins just to not be priced out of the market.

    People need to understand that there is no way in hell that this car would ever be allowed to be sold in The US, UK, or anywhere in the vast majority of the west for 10k. It's 10k in China because of many reasons, possibly the main one being wages. Workers on car production lines in China are paid a quarter of those in the likes of the US and the UK the materials and everything that goes into the car are significantly cheaper and they don't have half as many hoops to jump through for various regulations and stuff.
    If this ever comes to the west you can expect a minimum price of 25k but I'd guess between 30 and 35k. A line worker here gets paid roughly 50k a year at BMW, in China that same worker gets paid around 12k so they can buy this car with their yearly wages and you can buy a BMW or an Audi or a Tesla with yours. The average house price in China is a 3rd of the price of a house in the UK so they're even worse off with that.
    Essentially if you're willing to take a pay cut down to 25% of your current salary then perhaps you can have it for 10k.

      Actually, in China it currently costs just shy of $10K after a 5% price reduction (a permanent one, not a sale). That is the list price, with no subsidies.
      Outside China it often costs double that. Which still makes it very worth the price.
      Case in point, here in Brazil the Seagull costs more than the Renault Kwid E-Tech (think a rebranded Dacia Spring). Nevertheless, the Seagull, from a Chinese company that a year ago was essentially unknown in Brazil, is selling close to 20x more that Renault's cheaper offering. Brazilian customers are finding the Seagull a much better value proposition despite it being about 15% more expensive than Renault's offering.

BYD has started to make REPLACEABLE battery packs, where you drive into a Battery Station, and in 3 minutes (faster than fuelling a CV) drive off. They have built detachable Battery packs where you roll into a Battery Station, a robotic conveyor belt detaches the battery pack underneath the car and replaces it with a charge battery pack.

    - The BYD Seagull in developing countries (market possibilities, charging potential - I bet the UN or some NGO has done several reports...). Hey we all breathe the same air, right? Might make for a fun trip to Rio to check out the Dolphin at least!
    - A goofy/snarky review and update of of Who Killed The Electric Car? I am very sure we could have seen 200 mi range EVs in the 90's. Remember what Nissan did to poor Carlos?
    - My 2013 Leaf is now retailing for about -$2,500 (I think, after tax incentive)!!! It's an AWESOME car! I shamefully admit, when I bought it, I thought it might be a golf cart. What expert would know about the deals are out there now, how well batteries are holding up on used EVs, repair and maintenance cost comparisons, how much a refurb replacement battery is for a popular model (like a Leaf?), and maybe a few testimonials from buyers? (several vids there I'm sure)
    - How developing countries might do off-grid charging (yeah not sure this has been done, but it seems possible with Lightning-style bi-directional charging plus solar panels and a stationary battery...)
