These celebrity reviews feel like they need context with the cosmetic surgeries. Their diets and lifestyles are often put out as the reason for their appearance but there’s a lot of procedures out there to achieve the body they have not to mention the privilege of time, help staff, money etc. I know that’s getting out of your wheelhouse but just a reminder to everyone else!
Exactly. I hate the quote we all have the same 24hrs as Beyoncé. No we don’t actually. I don’t have care for my 3 kids, I don’t have a chef, a trainer etc I prepare all their meals I work out around them with interruptions. I shop for all their meals and do all the pick ups and drops off like most of us mums do.

One of the kindest things someone did for me when I was on my maternity leave with my oldest was bring me a casserole. A quinoa casserole with sweet potato, black beans, salsa, and cheese that was so delicious I begged her for the recipe when I got back to work. Quinoa can be totally delicious!
I absolutely love quinoa 😃 I make my favourite salad: quinoa, chopped red onion, peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, herbs, corn, feta, crispy chickpeas, olive oil and lemon juice. I go crazy for it.
I love it too! So, most people don’t know how to cook it (cook in too much water) and they experience mushy quinoa instead of beautiful fluffy quinoa and decide they don’t like it!
Quinoa is soooo good in a 50/50 mix with rice (I use basmati) - so half and half quinoa and rice, and MOST IMPORTANTLY cooked with stock-powder. That is SO delicious
I have a high powered blender, so I add hemp hearts and rolled oats to my smoothies. Makes them much more filling and the oats add a little toothsomeness.
She has a chef that provides all her meals I am sure. The chef more than likely provides a balanced meal menu based on her schedule of workouts. I bet it is low in added sugar.
I actually don't believe J-Lo. I think she follows an extremely strict diet to maintain her figure but plays into the whole "I don't deprive myself; I love my Puerto Rican food" to appear relatable and "real." I think her 10 day challenge is closer to how she actually eats on a daily basis.
I recently started mixing grape nuts into my smoothies after they are done blending! They add an amazing crunch to every drink and they are small enough to still fit through a large straw (and they don’t get soggy which is a bonus lol)! I have noticed that this addition definitely helps keep me full and satisfied for longer! 10/10 recommend! :)
Many years ago, I read a book written by medical doctors about hunger and fullness cues. It went into some depth about leptin and ghrelin, and various other topics. At its core, it was a "healthy eating" book and did include several recipes in the back, but far less diet culture-y than any book I'd read up to that point. It was very positive to read about hunger from a biological perspective, rather than hunger being presented as some moral failing or lack of will power. Another thing the authors mentioned that blew my mind at the time: it's possible to be medically obese and still be healthy. This obviously isn't encouragement for everyone to become obese, but drives home the point that you simply can't tell someone's health status from their appearance.

I noticed that, too. As far as I know she had a restrictive ED and most of her followers rather struggle with restricting food so she’s a bit too eager to tell everyone to increase portion sizes and just listen to your hunger. I’ve never been overweight, but I have two tips for you, maybe they can help you a little. First, integrate the treats you crave into your meals. For example, I absolutely love dark chocolate so I put a bit of it in my porridge. It’s so delicious when it melts and it makes the whole (healthy) porridge taste like chocolate. It’s a bit like a whole meal that is a treat but the oats and the nut butter I like to add make you feel full. Second, and this might really not work for anyone but I found it helpful when I ate too much candy, if you have the discipline it takes cut out sugary treats for 2-3 weeks. It’s easier because it’s just a limited time and personally, I learned to appreciate it more as a treat during that time and craved less of it or often even none of it afterward. If you’re not sure you can do it, though, it might not be the best idea as it might lead to bingeing.
I am like you when it comes to sugar cravings and portion control. So when I eat a bar of chocolate in one sitting I have this urge to skip a meal (restrict) to make up for the calories. So I have a rule: never skip a meal unless I am truly not hungry, no matter how much sugary treats I have had. This helps in the long run. Counting calories works for me most days. Still no skipping meals, even if it puts me over. Volume eating really works. And getting enough protein above all else. Surprisingly enough drinking lots of water works too. I am not saying drinking water to disguise hunger, but just staying hydrated.
To make portion control a bit easier and “trick” your brain, try using smaller plates, bowls, and spoons- appears like a larger portion, and more spoonfuls/bites with smaller spoons. I don’t have a sweet tooth but love savory anything!! however, if you don’t purchase the sweets, or purchase a smaller quantity, this eliminates the opportunity to binge on them.
I have PCOS and for me I had that feeling of never really being satisfied/having constant cravings a lot before I was treated (I also get some cravings to a smaller degree when I'm on my period bc my hormones are slightly less in check, but it's manageable). It's probably worth asking your doc to do some bloodwork to check your hormone levels. Even if you don't have PCOS you may have insulin resistance, which can be helped with medication.
Obviously she meantd eating normal food not sugary stuff, what I do to control that is to start with normal meals, I sometimes have up to three small bowls of my meals depending on Hunger and enjoyment. Then I won't have any sugary cravings anymore but I may have a banana or cookie or even a small chocolat. If I hadn't gotten full of my meal then that would make me eat less nutrition and more sugar.

About the idea that saying "...as long as it's healthy" is ableist, it is not. She isn't telling people to be disrespectful towards people who are ill or disabled. She's saying that when it comes time to make decisions about what to strive for, those decisions should aim for better health. This is something people with disabilities and chronic illnesses ALSO do all the time. The idea that having a disability or a chronic illness means people are wallowing in unhealthy behaviors is completely false and quite frankly gross. YES -- we SHOULD all strive for our best health. That that is not identical for everyone is blatantly obvious, and is not in question. NO ONE is saying to be an asshole to people who are sick or disabled. What we (I say this too) are saying is, your fitness and diet decisions should be directed towards improving your health, because they should be. Calling her out for this is petty and unnecessary. No one, unless malicious, thinks she is being ableist by encouraging people to prioritize their own health!
I think you might have misunderstood what Abbey was saying. She didn’t accuse JLO of being unkind towards people who are sick and disabled. She was merely saying that it’s problematic to say that “any body is a good body as long as it’s healthy”. Or that “it’s okay to be xx size as long as you’re healthy”. It’s problematic because health is super nuanced and multi-faceted, and not always within our control. Some people struggle to access nutritious food or to exercise. Some people have chronic health conditions which may impact their body size. Some people may have a hard time accessing health care, for whatever reason. So, therefore, you can’t say that bodies are good “as long as they’re healthy”, because “healthy” isn’t always in reach for some people. Sure, we can always “aim” for good health, as you said. But health shouldn’t be a benchmark for what’s a “good” or “beautiful” body. Make sense?

Projecting something onto someone in order to criticize that person is unfair. If you want to use what JLo said as a jumping off point to make a different point, that's fine, but not in a way that is critical of JLo as if she herself said something wrong. She didn't. All of that aside, good health is absolutely, without question, an objectively good thing. And because health relates to the physical body, a physically healthy body is absolutely, without question, an objectively good body with respect to its health. However this is not a "moral" good. A healthy body isn't a morally superior body. But in the same way that a living body is a better body than a dead body, a healthy body is better than a sick body. Good health is fundamentally and unquestionably good. It makes no difference to me if you agree or disagree with me. Having a healthy body is objectively better for you than having a sick body, and there is no amount of wishful thinking that will lead you around that one.
I agree with most of what you said about not knowing people's health, but in extreme cases where someone is severely overweight or severely underweight, there is no way anyone can be healthy under those circumstances.
I thought I was the only one thinking the same thing! I have a friend who is morbidly obese and has a lot of health issues but since society tells her to embrace her body, sadly she will not change her eating habits. I guess she'll realize "society" was wrong when she has a heart attack or goes into a diabetic coma.

I mean people really don’t go out there and say “yeah I have really disordered eating and intrusive thoughts you should listen to what I’m doing” - as someone who has, when I was at my worst I genuinely thought I was eating healthy and not restricting myself. I have hardly ate sugar this year and don’t miss it. I have 90% dark chocolate regularly, with a little dry fruit a handful of tart Cherries for my fix. It has made me well! I eat mainly but not always whole food. I eat 2 to 3 meals a day with a balance of fat/carbs and proteins. I eat bread (usual wholegrain or sourdough yum) and butter by the way. 😂
Quinoa does not have to suck! haha! I put celery salt, pepper, garlic powder, olive oil and onion powder in the water before boiling it and adding the quinoa. This way the quinoa absorbs the spices and salt. Also eating cold on a salad is DELISH.
Where I live healthy foods like fresh fruits and veggies have gotten outrageously expensive. Even canned and frozen. And even the ones that are typically more cost effective. In my job we serve those who don't have enough money to live and need assistance, particularly with food. A lot of them are only able to buy frozen TV dinners and things that are fine when well balanced but typically aren't because they are literally priced out of fruits and veggies. It's heartbreaking when I have clients cry because they aren't able to purchasing those kinds of foods. Or when you have kids begging for fruits and veggies because they aren't getting them often enough. Or when they open up about health issues because they can't afford balanced diets. I have even looked into videos for inexpensive balanced meals to help my clients and when trying to purchase those items at various stores in my city it's too expensive for my clients. I saw a pack of 2 chicken breasts at the store the other day priced at $18. And this was a store that's meant to be affordable. I don't know how to solve this problem but I think we really need to look at this more. Especially in my area of the US where basic things like bananas, onions, lettuce, etc are becoming too expensive to afford and hungry man tv dinners, frozen hot dogs, and other foods of that nature are the only things people can afford. I have some medical conditions and there are quite a bit of foods that eating triggers flareups for me. Like gluten, dairy, and some preservatives. There isn't a lot of research into my condition so they don't really now why this cause problems but it gives me endo belly and horrific stabbing pain when I eat them. (I don't think there is anything wrong with those foods, it's just what happens to me personal because i have endometriosis.) As such I pretty much buy only fresh foods and make everything from scratch. Which once upon a time, while a bit more time consume, was the inexpensive option. But not anymore. My fiance and I spend about $200 a week on groceries. This gets us about two or three bags of groceries total. And are basic meals nothing fancy. Looking at the data from our state that's basically what it costs now. Between 100 - 150 per week per person in the home. We are lucky enough to just barely cover this. But I'm so enraged for the huge amount of people who aren't able to pay this. A lot of my clients have cut back to only eating two meals a day. And for a lot of people it's just oatmeal, rice, or noddles without adding much else. I refuse to accept this is okay.
I kinda quit caffeine and super sugary stuff like chocolate and cookies cold turkey because of some issues I was having. I didn't have to I just didn't want it to make my stomach more upset. After over a month and when the withdrawl passed, I was sleeping way better, and then when I did have sweets again, like a brownie, it was even more amazingly yummy and sweet than it usually was because I got off my, er, bad habit? Of eating too much of sweets daily. I think that's the only good "reset" to have, realizing how sweet - OR salty! - your food really is when you back off awhile, because it's like your tongue gets so used to it, you need even more to get that same sweet or salty taste, leading to over-consuming salt and sugar. Like I used to DROWN stuff in soy sauce and it wasn't that salty to me. Now regular Lays chips are soooo salty to me, we only get lightly salted, which is probably for the better in the grand scheme of things lol. It's like a mild addiction.
@@angelicapacheco7176 Right! It's actually kinda cool because it's like you get to re-enjoy your favorite things all over again, making it have a strong flavor again. Was only eating the "no sugar added" applesauce for months. Had to get the regular ones, and the regular ones tasted SO sweet, like CANDY sweet, because it had the high fructose corn syrup added in. It's crazy. I used to have so much salt on everything too, now just a little is plenty. Now those things taste like a proper nice treat or snack.

I find that the whole lifestyle perspective is so helpful in my food life. I had to lose weight so I started adding in tasty high fiber and protein foods. My obsession is edemame pasta at the moment. 2oz is 13g fiber and 19g protein or something like that. Absolutely delicious
I think those clips are from a movie she had, in which she had to train and eat a certain way to have a certain body. Thats the life of actors. Henry Cavill once said that when he was filming Man of Steel the contract with Warner Brothers stated he COULDNT EAT ANYTHING WB didnt provide them. WB provided all his food, and he couldnt eat anything else. In the Witcher he also said he had to dehydrate to look more cut. Actors do certain things for a short time to reach a certain body necessary for that character they will play. In real life they dont do that.
Today has been a high carb day for me,and i'm mostly low carb ,somerimes keto. I've ate an entire spanish potato and onion omelate,half at lunch,half at dinner. It was store baught and still delicious!! It tasted home made. Has anyone reasing this ever ate spanish omelette?? You've gotta try,you are gonna be hooked!!😄😄😄 And so soe easy to make!! I've ate it cold,that way the potatoes are resistant starch and not spike sugar so much.So yummy.....plus is you make at home,your house is going to smell amazing!!😄😄😄

Abbey, help me out here then. I was diagnosed with pcos 21 years ago. I’ve tried it all to regulate my hormones. Then I started a keto diet 9 months ago. I didn’t want to go keto because I LOVE carbs. But I tried it, why not, I’ve tried every thing else. Well within the first week of going strictly keto, all of my acne went away. I slept for 8 hours straight (I was only sleeping like 3 hours for years) and my period came back after week 2. I usually would get a period 3 times a year. And now for 9 months straight every month my period comes. Yes I lost weight and some muscle but I do strength training very often, and it’s helping, but I did loose a lot of muscle and fat for sure. Last month I was so stressed out and I had bread, potatoes, and other high carb foods for like 3 days, and I couldn’t sleep. I felt so anxious, jittery, and boom…. My chin and lower jaw got filled with acne once again. Brain fog and feeling depressed also came as a side affect. This is how I felt for most of my life all of the time… when I went keto my anxiety also went away and sleep was not a struggle at all. So help me out. You always talk about balance and eating carbs is good. But what if I’m really sensitive to It? What is keto actually is helping me. Yes I’ll crave carbs obviously. But when I do eat them, it feel like I’m on a diabetic shock. As someone with pcos it’s recommended to eat a low sugar/ carb diet. Even if I have beans, sweet potatoes, and other sources of healthy carbs, it gets me so jittery after I eat them. Is it possible to just be sensitive to all carbs? Because I know I’ve definitely dealt with that!
a scoop of protein powder alone (depending on it's components) might have over a 100 calories so saying this smoothie is 250 calories doesnt sound right, especially that she's putting in the greek yogurt which is also high in cal. It sounds to me that her smoothie is over 300-350kcal but certainly I would be hungry right after 😂
Hi Abbey, I'm not sure if you or your team will read this, but I wanted to ask you anyway. I've been watching you on RUclips, but I don't knoe if you've tackled this topic on a different social media platform. I don't know if you've heard, but in the UK now, all restaurants/takeaway places (independent one offs don't, but chains do) HAVE to legally display the calories in each of their menu items, (including espresso). As someone who is trying to heal their relationship with food, it's terrifying for me to be out somewhere now. I feel such pressure to look at the calories and let them decide what I'm going to eat, rather than cueing into my body's actual needs. It causes me so much stress that now I never want to order food or eat out. I have to ask my husband to read me the menu items so I can't see them. Do you have any tips in how to keep safeguarding ourselves from this?
I don't know if it's for you, but when I went to school my older sister made me a card to carry around for leaning vocabulary, that had a special shape and hid one of the languages for only the word (and some of the following...). I rarely cheated. Maybe having your hubby cover up the calorie count using a part of a sheet of paper and two paper clips could help, if the numbers are on the side? It's still a lot of hustle, I'm very sorry you have to go through this. Such a law was a very inconsiderate one to make, I'm wishing you all the best untill it's revoked (soon).
Showing calories is a good thing , it makes you do wiser choices.. If it triggers you then let your partner pick and choose the food... UK has an obesity problem so
@@mariapriest4106 showing calories isn't a good thing for everyone because (as Abbey has stated multiple times) calories on their own tell you very little about the food. They tell you nothing about the nutritional content of the food - one meal could be higher in calories but a lot higher in protein, healthy fats or fibre, and one in lower calories could be higher in saturated fats and sugars. Also, the fact of the matter is that for many people who have eating disorders/disordered eating tendencies, having calories on show is very triggering and can increase likelihood of the behaviours occurring. If I'm going out for a meal, I'm going out to enjoy the social and emotional aspect of food, not to be panicked and thinking of nothing but a number which comparitively tells you very little about the nutrition or emotional satisfaction of the food.

These celebrities are never totally honest about their diets. No one eats mostly carbs and sugar and is that fit! Theses celebrities look so scripted when they are asked about their diets. Sorry...I don't by it!

4:25 Coffee has water obviously also tea, but the difference between drinking those two options and drinking plain water is that plain water takes longer to pass through the system unlike coffee and tea with components that will make you pee quicker and coffee will highten the bowel movement so some fluid goes out then. So isn’t that why it’s recommended by some doctors ( at least here in Scandinavia) that you pair your coffee/tea with a glass of water? (To help stay hydrated.) I drink two glasses of water before bed and also two in the morning straight after waking up. If I switched these out for coffee in the morning and tea at night, then I would most likely notice a shift in my skin overall.

Love your content, but can I quickly point out that I’m almost sure that the clips about Jlos cleanse were during the time when she was preparing for her role in Hustlers where she played a stripper. While it may not be the healthiest, actors do go on these “cleanses” or diets to achieve whatever they’re role requires. And to me, it’s part of their art, and it’s also unrealistic to expect these people who make lots of money on they’re looks to refrain from really committing to these diets. Just thought I’d add. You know what else I find funny is that only in the 21 century we're talking about quinoa and avocados and some fake protein in a smoothie. What happened to steak and eggs. No hunger pains, lots of protein and nutrition
Hi Abbey Sharp! I found your channel last year and absolutely love when you debunk the crazy diet fads that are all over social media these days. Curious, do you have a video on Whole30? The cut out of carbs, legumes, sugar, alcohol, etc is promoted as a ‘dietary experiment’ in which you supposedly discover during reintroduction, the foods that give you bad reactions/bloating/headaches. And while I did discover a slight ‘intolerance’ to dairy, I found the extreme change in my diet during the 30 days of Whole30 actually exacerbated my concern of how to eat sustainably and it has taken me years to rediscover a healthy balanced diet. Just curious if you have thoughts/seen research on how such an extreme restriction can ultimately work against you long term. Thank you Abbey! Keep doing what you do best ❤
I feel like chicken and salad/vegetables and quinoa are not necessarily “diety”. I feel like the stigma has to go both ways; let’s not call pizza bad or unhealthy, but also not call chicken and vegetables “diet food”.
I agree. Although I acknowledge that some foods are considered traditional "diet foods," whereas pizza, french fries, and donuts will never be, nor will they likely ever be considered super health-promoting. Chicken, salad, and quinoa are foods that we're recommended to eat more of by dietitians, pizza and the lot are generally not. I think Abbey called them "diet-y" because when JLo said she doesn't like to cut out "yummy foods," you would expect her to say pizza or tacos, or literally anything else aside from what she said.

This woman has critics for everyone, I find it good to do a cleanse from time to time, not all the time, we all know sugar has side effects. Anyway I would not like to have a body like this nutritionist, it looks like she needs to exercise a bit.
The only thing that worked for me to get my sugar addiction in control was to quit completely for 5 months. I now don't crave it as much and am fine eating it sometimes.

I used to write off so many things as just "being healthy" and wanting to feel good when it was so clearly diet culture BS that ultimately just landed me in the hospital. I have a bad habit of craving sugar when stressed. Problem is when I get past the stressful period, and my palate gets used to that level of sweetness. So I will cut all added sugars for about 7 days when my coffee starts to become more of a dessert. (It always continues to escalate, like a drug habit) Then I allow myself whatever sweet I've been craving. I either enjoy it and feel satisfied or it is too sweet for me, either way I don't continuously crave more. Not a detox or anything, it just helps remind my palate that there are other flavors than sugar and salt.

I joked an said damnit Jim I’m a clinical therapist not an RD. But would love a video on bile salts and their effectiveness for debloating and folks who’ve had their gallbladder removed.
At least she is a celebrity who acknowledges she eats food. That is amazing in itself. 🤦♀️ I must say I love grilled chicken. I would say chicken can be yummy, salads and shakes do very little for me. Lol
Quinoa doesn't suck! I love it mixed with rice in my bibimbap and I also use it for my morning porridge for which I use rice flakes as I can't have oat and I don't like buckwheat. Since the rice porridge is pretty poor on fibre and nutrients, I make it with either cooked quinoa or chia seeds to it to boost flavor and nutritional factor. I don't think quinoa is real gourmet as is, but there are several great uses for it in the kitchen.
It's okay for people to think it sucks, we all have different preferences. Even what you listed above involves mixing it with a bunch of other things to make it palatable. If a food can't be enjoyable on its own, it kind of sucks, and I've personally never found it enjoyable prepared very simply.

THANK YOU for bringing up ableism!! It's such a huge part of diet/wellness culture, which is rooted in the idea that being healthy makes you better or more moral than if you're unhealthy. Which is awful because even if someone is "unhealthy" for whatever reason, they're no less of a person, and because so much of health is outside of our control anyway.
Who claimed you’re immoral when you’re unhealthy or less of a person? Literally no one is trying to make anyone feel bad about things they can’t control about their health like diabetes type 1. However, many of us think it’s good to strive for making healthy choices where we can control it, e.g. by exercising, eating healthy and neither too little nor too much. That doesn’t mean we think you’re a bad person or immoral if you don’t. But I’m the end you’re hurting yourself if you don’t take control of the things you can control and deliberately make choices that are bad for you.
I just started an elimination diet for my dermatitis (I generally against diets and don't do them but this is for skin concerns) and at this point I'm basically only eating pasta, potatoes, rice and veggies lol it's most celebrity's nightmare. ALL the carbs 😂

Did you start with a few foods you knew you didn't react to then gradually add more in, or did you start with everything then gradually eliminate the foods you thought were causing a reaction?
I struggled for a long time with breakouts. Took Accutane and all the special skin spa treatments. Until one day I realized it was coffee that was making me break out so. Yes caffeine can break you out. I have coffee two days in a row I will have a pimple. No I only break out on my menstrual and that’s not even every time I’m on it. I went from a face full of acne to clear skin. All those years of thinking sugar needed to be cut out, or dairy needed to be cut out, or carbs, was all wrong.
@@sydneyanderson12 yea I’ve always been a tea drinker. But im saying just having coffee in my diet , the caffeine level must be too high it will trigger a break out. And i use to drink it everyday smh. Ofcourse now I only have tea. I can have decaf coffee so once in a while ill have that. But the severity of my acne, i think it’s strange that people don’t talk about it enough that coffee can trigger acne. People will say chocolate and that’s unfounded. I was a full crater face from it.

Yes to people recognizing hunger and eating until they are actually satiated. No to telling someone who struggled with overeating to just keep eating the food they already had until they are full🤦♀️ If I ate something yummy and fun in a reasonable portion, but it didn’t even touch my hunger-most of those foods take a crap ton and way more energy than I need to just fill my stomach. So I switch to something more satiating at that point. Maybe I go back to the fun once I’m really close or just there and have a few more bites. No guilt. But too many people who struggle with eating choices (used to be me) try to make some kinds of foods do jobs they’re poorly suited for. That’s the genius of the HCC. But I don’t understand telling someone who might be not confident with food or struggling with overeating to just keep eating a food that’s not doing the job in the name of never feeling guilty. It’s not helpful.

@@theprousteffect9717 it was really written for women with a history of restriction, not overindulgence or binging. I think it can be adapted for us but it usually isn’t and often conversations about adapting it are shouted down in the IE community. I view what I do as adapted intuitive eating. As is it is not appropriate for someone on the other end of the spectrum. They allow for mechanical eating in recognition that people with restrictive eating disorders may not be able to feel real hunger cues for awhile and may need to just make themselves eat. The same is true on the other end, but it looks differently. It looks more like reducing or avoiding foods for a time that mess with your hunger cues and then only putting them back in with some very intentional guidelines. Or maybe even more than that, making some mechanical rules around what you must prioritize in terms of food to address hunger and nutrition ahead of just for fun foods. Chronically thin undereaters just can’t teach chronically overweight over eaters how to eat intuitively. We’re messed up in different ways. It comes from a place of compassion but the fact that this space has become almost overwhelmingly a space for obese people to justify habits that are hurting them rather than restrictive eaters getting help. Intuitive eating changed my life but I also threw out the bit about not caring about weight at all. I needed to lose some in order to have a fulfilling life just like anorexic people genuinely need to gain. I let it go for awhile while I was healing my relationship with food, but getting my weight down never stopped being a goal. I just didn’t address it again until I was sure I could take it off for good and not just cycle again.
How can we talk about this without talking about the other side of the picture. The change in the food industry over the last decades and what it’s doing to our health. Of course you would never judge someone based on your perception of their health, but it’s undeniable that with obesity rates skyrocketing something is happening. Everything cannot be blamed on diet culture. We need strategies to handle the new nutritional environment we are in. Her strategies of portion control and moderation sounded pretty reasonable to be honest and you didn’t offer any alternative
Totally agree there needs to be a food industry discussion. Individual responsibility for portion control or healing one's relationship with food goes only so far. Like cigarettes, seat belts and alcohol, there needs to be a public policy and cultural shift that modifies availability and what is considered normal for these kinds of foods. The school I work in for example offers kids juice boxes but no bottled water, mealy mushy red delicious apples for their required fruit (which they usually don't eat), and the lunch is often things like tater tots, instant powdered potato, fried foods, etc.

Um… not everyone’s body is a “well-oiled machine..” I wish that were true for everyone but it isn’t.. Some people can’t digest fats, some people need massive aid in digestion and are desperately trying to find a way to help themselves, and such issues are actually far more common then people realise, and it’s toxic to preach ignorance of this.
What you see with JLo, is mainly all filters, lighting in person they look their age. Personal trainers, personal chefs. It all a elusion these are regular people with money, plastic surgeons etc.
Or, you will do one of these challenges and it makes you feel better. And maybe you will go back to sugar. But some people are going to be a touch more mindful. Because they do remember how much better they felt by “cutting sugar” specifically. Sometimes you find out what’s causing issues by cutting things even if it is just a stupid little challenge. One of the kindest things someone did for me when I was on my maternity leave with my oldest was bring me a casserole. A quinoa casserole with sweet potato, black beans, salsa, and cheese that was so delicious I begged her for the recipe when I got back to work. Quinoa can be totally delicious!

Quinoa is soooo good in a 50/50 mix with rice (I use basmati) - so half and half quinoa and rice, and MOST IMPORTANTLY cooked with stock-powder. That is SO delicious

I recently started mixing grape nuts into my smoothies after they are done blending! They add an amazing crunch to every drink and they are small enough to still fit through a large straw (and they don’t get soggy which is a bonus lol)! I have noticed that this addition definitely helps keep me full and satisfied for longer! 10/10 recommend! :)

Many years ago, I read a book written by medical doctors about hunger and fullness cues. It went into some depth about leptin and ghrelin, and various other topics. At its core, it was a "healthy eating" book and did include several recipes in the back, but far less diet culture-y than any book I'd read up to that point. It was very positive to read about hunger from a biological perspective, rather than hunger being presented as some moral failing or lack of will power. Another thing the authors mentioned that blew my mind at the time: it's possible to be medically obese and still be healthy. This obviously isn't encouragement for everyone to become obese, but drives home the point that you simply can't tell someone's health status from their appearance.

I noticed that, too. As far as I know she had a restrictive ED and most of her followers rather struggle with restricting food so she’s a bit too eager to tell everyone to increase portion sizes and just listen to your hunger.
I’ve never been overweight, but I have two tips for you, maybe they can help you a little.
First, integrate the treats you crave into your meals. For example, I absolutely love dark chocolate so I put a bit of it in my porridge. It’s so delicious when it melts and it makes the whole (healthy) porridge taste like chocolate. It’s a bit like a whole meal that is a treat but the oats and the nut butter I like to add make you feel full.
Second, and this might really not work for anyone but I found it helpful when I ate too much candy, if you have the discipline it takes cut out sugary treats for 2-3 weeks. It’s easier because it’s just a limited time and personally, I learned to appreciate it more as a treat during that time and craved less of it or often even none of it afterward. If you’re not sure you can do it, though, it might not be the best idea as it might lead to bingeing.
I am like you when it comes to sugar cravings and portion control. So when I eat a bar of chocolate in one sitting I have this urge to skip a meal (restrict) to make up for the calories. So I have a rule: never skip a meal unless I am truly not hungry, no matter how much sugary treats I have had. This helps in the long run.
Counting calories works for me most days. Still no skipping meals, even if it puts me over.
Volume eating really works. And getting enough protein above all else.
Surprisingly enough drinking lots of water works too. I am not saying drinking water to disguise hunger, but just staying hydrated.
To make portion control a bit easier and “trick” your brain, try using smaller plates, bowls, and spoons- appears like a larger portion, and more spoonfuls/bites with smaller spoons. I don’t have a sweet tooth but love savory anything!! however, if you don’t purchase the sweets, or purchase a smaller quantity, this eliminates the opportunity to binge on them.
I have PCOS and for me I had that feeling of never really being satisfied/having constant cravings a lot before I was treated (I also get some cravings to a smaller degree when I'm on my period bc my hormones are slightly less in check, but it's manageable).
It's probably worth asking your doc to do some bloodwork to check your hormone levels. Even if you don't have PCOS you may have insulin resistance, which can be helped with medication.
Obviously she meantd eating normal food not sugary stuff, what I do to control that is to start with normal meals, I sometimes have up to three small bowls of my meals depending on Hunger and enjoyment. Then I won't have any sugary cravings anymore but I may have a banana or cookie or even a small chocolat. If I hadn't gotten full of my meal then that would make me eat less nutrition and more sugar.
Jennifer Lopez did an interview with The Breakfast Club where she explained that she did the 10-day challenge to prep for Hustlers and when prepping for her bigger scenes in Hustlers. It's not something she does often.
About the idea that saying "...as long as it's healthy" is ableist, it is not. She isn't telling people to be disrespectful towards people who are ill or disabled. She's saying that when it comes time to make decisions about what to strive for, those decisions should aim for better health. This is something people with disabilities and chronic illnesses ALSO do all the time. The idea that having a disability or a chronic illness means people are wallowing in unhealthy behaviors is completely false and quite frankly gross. YES -- we SHOULD all strive for our best health. That that is not identical for everyone is blatantly obvious, and is not in question. NO ONE is saying to be an asshole to people who are sick or disabled. What we (I say this too) are saying is, your fitness and diet decisions should be directed towards improving your health, because they should be. Calling her out for this is petty and unnecessary. No one, unless malicious, thinks she is being ableist by encouraging people to prioritize their own health!

I think you might have misunderstood what Abbey was saying.
She didn’t accuse JLO of being unkind towards people who are sick and disabled. She was merely saying that it’s problematic to say that “any body is a good body as long as it’s healthy”. Or that “it’s okay to be xx size as long as you’re healthy”. It’s problematic because health is super nuanced and multi-faceted, and not always within our control. Some people struggle to access nutritious food or to exercise. Some people have chronic health conditions which may impact their body size. Some people may have a hard time accessing health care, for whatever reason. So, therefore, you can’t say that bodies are good “as long as they’re healthy”, because “healthy” isn’t always in reach for some people. Sure, we can always “aim” for good health, as you said. But health shouldn’t be a benchmark for what’s a “good” or “beautiful” body. Make sense?

All of that aside, good health is absolutely, without question, an objectively good thing. And because health relates to the physical body, a physically healthy body is absolutely, without question, an objectively good body with respect to its health. However this is not a "moral" good. A healthy body isn't a morally superior body. But in the same way that a living body is a better body than a dead body, a healthy body is better than a sick body. Good health is fundamentally and unquestionably good.
It makes no difference to me if you agree or disagree with me. Having a healthy body is objectively better for you than having a sick body, and there is no amount of wishful thinking that will lead you around that one.
I agree with most of what you said about not knowing people's health, but in extreme cases where someone is severely overweight or severely underweight, there is no way anyone can be healthy under those circumstances.

I have a friend who is morbidly obese and has a lot of health issues but since society tells her to embrace her body, sadly she will not change her eating habits. I guess she'll realize "society" was wrong when she has a heart attack or goes into a diabetic coma.

I have hardly ate sugar this year and don’t miss it. I have 90% dark chocolate regularly, with a little dry fruit a handful of tart Cherries for my fix. It has made me well! I eat mainly but not always whole food. I eat 2 to 3 meals a day with a balance of fat/carbs and proteins. I eat bread (usual wholegrain or sourdough yum) and butter by the way. 😂
Quinoa does not have to suck! haha! I put celery salt, pepper, garlic powder, olive oil and onion powder in the water before boiling it and adding the quinoa. This way the quinoa absorbs the spices and salt. Also eating cold on a salad is DELISH.

Where I live healthy foods like fresh fruits and veggies have gotten outrageously expensive. Even canned and frozen. And even the ones that are typically more cost effective. In my job we serve those who don't have enough money to live and need assistance, particularly with food. A lot of them are only able to buy frozen TV dinners and things that are fine when well balanced but typically aren't because they are literally priced out of fruits and veggies. It's heartbreaking when I have clients cry because they aren't able to purchasing those kinds of foods. Or when you have kids begging for fruits and veggies because they aren't getting them often enough. Or when they open up about health issues because they can't afford balanced diets. I have even looked into videos for inexpensive balanced meals to help my clients and when trying to purchase those items at various stores in my city it's too expensive for my clients. I saw a pack of 2 chicken breasts at the store the other day priced at $18. And this was a store that's meant to be affordable. I don't know how to solve this problem but I think we really need to look at this more. Especially in my area of the US where basic things like bananas, onions, lettuce, etc are becoming too expensive to afford and hungry man tv dinners, frozen hot dogs, and other foods of that nature are the only things people can afford. I have some medical conditions and there are quite a bit of foods that eating triggers flareups for me. Like gluten, dairy, and some preservatives. There isn't a lot of research into my condition so they don't really now why this cause problems but it gives me endo belly and horrific stabbing pain when I eat them. (I don't think there is anything wrong with those foods, it's just what happens to me personal because i have endometriosis.) As such I pretty much buy only fresh foods and make everything from scratch. Which once upon a time, while a bit more time consume, was the inexpensive option. But not anymore. My fiance and I spend about $200 a week on groceries. This gets us about two or three bags of groceries total. And are basic meals nothing fancy. Looking at the data from our state that's basically what it costs now. Between 100 - 150 per week per person in the home. We are lucky enough to just barely cover this. But I'm so enraged for the huge amount of people who aren't able to pay this. A lot of my clients have cut back to only eating two meals a day. And for a lot of people it's just oatmeal, rice, or noddles without adding much else. I refuse to accept this is okay.
I kinda quit caffeine and super sugary stuff like chocolate and cookies cold turkey because of some issues I was having. I didn't have to I just didn't want it to make my stomach more upset. After over a month and when the withdrawl passed, I was sleeping way better, and then when I did have sweets again, like a brownie, it was even more amazingly yummy and sweet than it usually was because I got off my, er, bad habit? Of eating too much of sweets daily.
I think that's the only good "reset" to have, realizing how sweet - OR salty! - your food really is when you back off awhile, because it's like your tongue gets so used to it, you need even more to get that same sweet or salty taste, leading to over-consuming salt and sugar. Like I used to DROWN stuff in soy sauce and it wasn't that salty to me. Now regular Lays chips are soooo salty to me, we only get lightly salted, which is probably for the better in the grand scheme of things lol. It's like a mild addiction.
@@angelicapacheco7176 Right! It's actually kinda cool because it's like you get to re-enjoy your favorite things all over again, making it have a strong flavor again. Was only eating the "no sugar added" applesauce for months. Had to get the regular ones, and the regular ones tasted SO sweet, like CANDY sweet, because it had the high fructose corn syrup added in. It's crazy. I used to have so much salt on everything too, now just a little is plenty. Now those things taste like a proper nice treat or snack.

I think those clips are from a movie she had, in which she had to train and eat a certain way to have a certain body. Thats the life of actors. Henry Cavill once said that when he was filming Man of Steel the contract with Warner Brothers stated he COULDNT EAT ANYTHING WB didnt provide them. WB provided all his food, and he couldnt eat anything else. In the Witcher he also said he had to dehydrate to look more cut. Actors do certain things for a short time to reach a certain body necessary for that character they will play. In real life they dont do that.

Today has been a high carb day for me,and i'm mostly low carb ,somerimes keto. I've ate an entire spanish potato and onion omelate,half at lunch,half at dinner. Abbey, help me out here then. I was diagnosed with pcos 21 years ago. I’ve tried it all to regulate my hormones. Then I started a keto diet 9 months ago. I didn’t want to go keto because I LOVE carbs. But I tried it, why not, I’ve tried every thing else. Well within the first week of going strictly keto, all of my acne went away. I slept for 8 hours straight (I was only sleeping like 3 hours for years) and my period came back after week 2. I usually would get a period 3 times a year. And now for 9 months straight every month my period comes. Yes I lost weight and some muscle but I do strength training very often, and it’s helping, but I did loose a lot of muscle and fat for sure.
Last month I was so stressed out and I had bread, potatoes, and other high carb foods for like 3 days, and I couldn’t sleep. I felt so anxious, jittery, and boom…. My chin and lower jaw got filled with acne once again. Brain fog and feeling depressed also came as a side affect. This is how I felt for most of my life all of the time… when I went keto my anxiety also went away and sleep was not a struggle at all.

It? What is keto actually is helping me. Yes I’ll crave carbs obviously. But when I do eat them, it feel like I’m on a diabetic shock. As someone with pcos it’s recommended to eat a low sugar/ carb diet. Even if I have beans, sweet potatoes, and other sources of healthy carbs, it gets me so jittery after I eat them.

a scoop of protein powder alone (depending on it's components) might have over a 100 calories so saying this smoothie is 250 calories doesnt sound right, especially that she's putting in the greek yogurt which is also high in cal. It sounds to me that her smoothie is over 300-350kcal but certainly I would be hungry right after 😂

I'm not sure if you or your team will read this, but I wanted to ask you anyway.
I've been watching you on RUclips, but I don't knoe if you've tackled this topic on a different social media platform.
I don't know if you've heard, but in the UK now, all restaurants/takeaway places (independent one offs don't, but chains do) HAVE to legally display the calories in each of their menu items, (including espresso).
As someone who is trying to heal their relationship with food, it's terrifying for me to be out somewhere now. I feel such pressure to look at the calories and let them decide what I'm going to eat, rather than cueing into my body's actual needs. It causes me so much stress that now I never want to order food or eat out. I have to ask my husband to read me the menu items so I can't see them.
Do you have any tips in how to keep safeguarding ourselves from this?
I don't know if it's for you, but when I went to school my older sister made me a card to carry around for leaning vocabulary, that had a special shape and hid one of the languages for only the word (and some of the following...). I rarely cheated.
Maybe having your hubby cover up the calorie count using a part of a sheet of paper and two paper clips could help, if the numbers are on the side?

Showing calories is a good thing , it makes you do wiser choices.. If it triggers you then let your partner pick and choose the food... UK has an obesity problem so

@@mariapriest4106 showing calories isn't a good thing for everyone because (as Abbey has stated multiple times) calories on their own tell you very little about the food.
They tell you nothing about the nutritional content of the food - one meal could be higher in calories but a lot higher in protein, healthy fats or fibre, and one in lower calories could be higher in saturated fats and sugars.
Also, the fact of the matter is that for many people who have eating disorders/disordered eating tendencies, having calories on show is very triggering and can increase likelihood of the behaviours occurring.
If I'm going out for a meal, I'm going out to enjoy the social and emotional aspect of food, not to be panicked and thinking of nothing but a number which comparitively tells you very little about the nutrition or emotional satisfaction of the food.

These celebrities are never totally honest about their diets. No one eats mostly carbs and sugar and is that fit! Theses celebrities look so scripted when they are asked about their diets. Sorry...I don't by it!

4:25 Coffee has water obviously also tea, but the difference between drinking those two options and drinking plain water is that plain water takes longer to pass through the system unlike coffee and tea with components that will make you pee quicker and coffee will highten the bowel movement so some fluid goes out then. So isn’t that why it’s recommended by some doctors ( at least here in Scandinavia) that you pair your coffee/tea with a glass of water? (To help stay hydrated.) I drink two glasses of water before bed and also two in the morning straight after waking up. If I switched these out for coffee in the morning and tea at night, then I would most likely notice a shift in my skin overall.

Love your content, but can I quickly point out that I’m almost sure that the clips about Jlos cleanse were during the time when she was preparing for her role in Hustlers where she played a stripper. While it may not be the healthiest, actors do go on these “cleanses” or diets to achieve whatever they’re role requires. And to me, it’s part of their art, and it’s also unrealistic to expect these people who make lots of money on they’re looks to refrain from really committing to these diets. Just thought I’d add. Hi Abbey Sharp! I found your channel last year and absolutely love when you debunk the crazy diet fads that are all over social media these days. Curious, do you have a video on Whole30? The cut out of carbs, legumes, sugar, alcohol, etc is promoted as a ‘dietary experiment’ in which you supposedly discover during reintroduction, the foods that give you bad reactions/bloating/headaches. And while I did discover a slight ‘intolerance’ to dairy, I found the extreme change in my diet during the 30 days of Whole30 actually exacerbated my concern of how to eat sustainably and it has taken me years to rediscover a healthy balanced diet. Just curious if you have thoughts/seen research on how such an extreme restriction can ultimately work against you long term. Thank you Abbey! Keep doing what you do best ❤

I agree. Although I acknowledge that some foods are considered traditional "diet foods," whereas pizza, french fries, and donuts will never be, nor will they likely ever be considered super health-promoting. Chicken, salad, and quinoa are foods that we're recommended to eat more of by dietitians, pizza and the lot are generally not. I think Abbey called them "diet-y" because when JLo said she doesn't like to cut out "yummy foods," you would expect her to say pizza or tacos, or literally anything else aside from what she said.

Our bodies need adequate nutrients to function optimally the amount of calories do not matter as much as the quality of these calories.
The only thing that worked for me to get my sugar addiction in control was to quit completely for 5 months. I now don't crave it as much and am fine eating it sometimes.

I used to write off so many things as just "being healthy" and wanting to feel good when it was so clearly diet culture BS that ultimately just landed me in the hospital. I have a bad habit of craving sugar when stressed. Problem is when I get past the stressful period, and my palate gets used to that level of sweetness. So I will cut all added sugars for about 7 days when my coffee starts to become more of a dessert. (It always continues to escalate, like a drug habit) Then I allow myself whatever sweet I've been craving. I either enjoy it and feel satisfied or it is too sweet for me, either way I don't continuously crave more. Not a detox or anything, it just helps remind my palate that there are other flavors than sugar and salt.

Quinoa doesn't suck! I love it mixed with rice in my bibimbap and I also use it for my morning porridge for which I use rice flakes as I can't have oat and I don't like buckwheat. Since the rice porridge is pretty poor on fibre and nutrients, I make it with either cooked quinoa or chia seeds to it to boost flavor and nutritional factor. I don't think quinoa is real gourmet as is, but there are several great uses for it in the kitchen.
It’s a great addition to homemade granola too!
It's okay for people to think it sucks, we all have different preferences. Even what you listed above involves mixing it with a bunch of other things to make it palatable. If a food can't be enjoyable on its own, it kind of sucks, and I've personally never found it enjoyable prepared very simply.

THANK YOU for bringing up ableism!! It's such a huge part of diet/wellness culture, which is rooted in the idea that being healthy makes you better or more moral than if you're unhealthy. Which is awful because even if someone is "unhealthy" for whatever reason, they're no less of a person, and because so much of health is outside of our control anyway.

Who claimed you’re immoral when you’re unhealthy or less of a person? Literally no one is trying to make anyone feel bad about things they can’t control about their health like diabetes type 1. However, many of us think it’s good to strive for making healthy choices where we can control it, e.g. by exercising, eating healthy and neither too little nor too much.
That doesn’t mean we think you’re a bad person or immoral if you don’t. But I’m the end you’re hurting yourself if you don’t take control of the things you can control and deliberately make choices that are bad for you.
I just started an elimination diet for my dermatitis (I generally against diets and don't do them but this is for skin concerns) and at this point I'm basically only eating pasta, potatoes, rice and veggies lol it's most celebrity's nightmare. ALL the carbs 😂

@@chrissafe3342 What sugar are you talking about? None of the carb sources listed here contain a significant amount of fructose, glucose, or sucrose. They're almost all starches and fibres.
Did you start with a few foods you knew you didn't react to then gradually add more in, or did you start with everything then gradually eliminate the foods you thought were causing a reaction?
I struggled for a long time with breakouts. Took Accutane and all the special skin spa treatments. Until one day I realized it was coffee that was making me break out so. Yes caffeine can break you out. I have coffee two days in a row I will have a pimple. No I only break out on my menstrual and that’s not even every time I’m on it. I went from a face full of acne to clear skin. All those years of thinking sugar needed to be cut out, or dairy needed to be cut out, or carbs, was all wrong.
Have you tried green tea? Have honestly noticed a huge change in my skin with it! Much clearer and glowier!!
@@sydneyanderson12 yea I’ve always been a tea drinker. But im saying just having coffee in my diet , the caffeine level must be too high it will trigger a break out. And i use to drink it everyday smh. Ofcourse now I only have tea. I can have decaf coffee so once in a while ill have that. But the severity of my acne, i think it’s strange that people don’t talk about it enough that coffee can trigger acne. People will say chocolate and that’s unfounded. I was a full crater face from it.

Yes to people recognizing hunger and eating until they are actually satiated. No to telling someone who struggled with overeating to just keep eating the food they already had until they are full🤦♀️
If I ate something yummy and fun in a reasonable portion, but it didn’t even touch my hunger-most of those foods take a crap ton and way more energy than I need to just fill my stomach. So I switch to something more satiating at that point. Maybe I go back to the fun once I’m really close or just there and have a few more bites. No guilt. But too many people who struggle with eating choices (used to be me) try to make some kinds of foods do jobs they’re poorly suited for. That’s the genius of the HCC. But I don’t understand telling someone who might be not confident with food or struggling with overeating to just keep eating a food that’s not doing the job in the name of never feeling guilty. It’s not helpful.
Yes, yes, this speaks to me. This is why it pisses me off so much when a purely intuitive eating approach is recommended for everyone with any food history.
@@theprousteffect9717 it was really written for women with a history of restriction, not overindulgence or binging. I think it can be adapted for us but it usually isn’t and often conversations about adapting it are shouted down in the IE community. I view what I do as adapted intuitive eating. As is it is not appropriate for someone on the other end of the spectrum. They allow for mechanical eating in recognition that people with restrictive eating disorders may not be able to feel real hunger cues for awhile and may need to just make themselves eat. The same is true on the other end, but it looks differently. It looks more like reducing or avoiding foods for a time that mess with your hunger cues and then only putting them back in with some very intentional guidelines. Or maybe even more than that, making some mechanical rules around what you must prioritize in terms of food to address hunger and nutrition ahead of just for fun foods. Chronically thin undereaters just can’t teach chronically overweight over eaters how to eat intuitively. We’re messed up in different ways. It comes from a place of compassion but the fact that this space has become almost overwhelmingly a space for obese people to justify habits that are hurting them rather than restrictive eaters getting help.
Intuitive eating changed my life but I also threw out the bit about not caring about weight at all. I needed to lose some in order to have a fulfilling life just like anorexic people genuinely need to gain. I let it go for awhile while I was healing my relationship with food, but getting my weight down never stopped being a goal. I just didn’t address it again until I was sure I could take it off for good and not just cycle again.

How can we talk about this without talking about the other side of the picture. The change in the food industry over the last decades and what it’s doing to our health. Of course you would never judge someone based on your perception of their health, but it’s undeniable that with obesity rates skyrocketing something is happening. Everything cannot be blamed on diet culture. We need strategies to handle the new nutritional environment we are in. Her strategies of portion control and moderation sounded pretty reasonable to be honest and you didn’t offer any alternative
Totally agree there needs to be a food industry discussion. Individual responsibility for portion control or healing one's relationship with food goes only so far. Like cigarettes, seat belts and alcohol, there needs to be a public policy and cultural shift that modifies availability and what is considered normal for these kinds of foods. The school I work in for example offers kids juice boxes but no bottled water, mealy mushy red delicious apples for their required fruit (which they usually don't eat), and the lunch is often things like tater tots, instant powdered potato, fried foods, etc.
People love to blame society and diet culture instead of taking accountability for themselves....

What you see with JLo, is mainly all filters, lighting in person they look their age. Personal trainers, personal chefs. It all a elusion these are regular people with money, plastic surgeons etc.

There are studies being done that correlate caffeine and breast health negatively. Breast cancer is present in 1 out of 12 women in the U.S. Food for thought- no pun intended.
What about donuts, pizza, packaged food (including "healthy" packed food), and the list goes on and on. And don't forget the garbage seed oils that are a slow poison. Why coffee? Considering that most people eat 98% of cr#ppy food, why would coffee be the culprit?
