Well, thank you for this, I am a little bit nervous about how much time I'm going to have but I will do my best, both at making videos and at my new job.
With a new shoulder, at seventy years old, I had to give up my bow. I looked up some crossbow videos and found you. What a pleasure! Not only all the great advice and tips, but the humor. That jump on the side by side kills me. Thanks for the videos! Wayne from Wyoming
I use to hunt from a climber. Several years ago I bought an ASAT leafy suit. It's amazing how close I've had deer that never knew I was in the world. I've had them 4-5 yards away many times. For hunting from the ground, in hardwoods, I think the ASAT leafy suit is perhaps the most underrated camo out there. They don't look at you, they look through you. I had 5 racked bucks within bow range one morning last year, while sitting between 2 White Oak trees. No cover in front, none behind me. None of them ever knew I was there.
I honestly love hunting from the ground. I set up in an old blow down and killed a doe earlier this season and yesterday set up behind a blowdown against a huge rock face and called in a decent 8pt that I passed on. It's been an exciting few weeks in the woods. My main spot where the best bucks are is going to require my climber but man is it a pain to carry in on my back. I would much rather hunt on the ground.
Rich, thank you for your dedication to crossbow hunting. I have been following for years. I have climbed trees my entire hunting life. Saddle hunter for the last 3 years and just done with climbing trees. At age 70, I'm going to ground hunting. I have converted my Field pod, ordered a Burris Oracle x, and just ordered the Waldrop Pacseat. Check it out. Thanks again.
I MAKE LONG SHAG CARPET BOOT PADS AND SPRAY THEM DOWN WITH EITHER BUCK OR DOE IN HEAT SCENT , AND ITS QUIET WHEN WALKING ON LEAVES . YOU CAN SEW VELCRO STRAPS TO THE CARPET TO STAY ON YOUR BOOTS LIKE A BELT ON THE TOE AND AROUND THE HEEL .
I'm addicted to packing my lone wolf stand and sticks in at this point and it has given me tons of opportunities but my wife isn't a huge fan of it. That being said I'm constantly looking for better ways to ground hunt with her on public lands. There are some really good ideas in here. Thanks for sharing
I'm 73 and started hunting light. It makes it easy to move around if needed. I have taken several folding chairs and cut the lower leg's down to about 1-2 inches. Then put them in black trash bags and drop them off where I think I might want to hunt there later (also) great for pop up blinds. If I do get a deer, I can walk out with out carrying anything and get my quad. It has made hunting easier for this old Fart.. I enjoy your channel keep up the good work.
Great video Rich as always! I've exclusively hunted on the ground for years. You want ultimate comfort and packability, look into a low down seat from fanatic outdoors. You do need a tree to set it up on but I've never made a full sit without dozing off in comfort! Keep up the great vids, they make winter fly by! Dave.
You may want to blacklight the boot soles . ( and everything else ). Many paints and dyes have uv brighteners that make things glow in lower light conditions . When younger , painted my bow , Went to hunt elk in New Mexico and was essentially holding a glow stick that spooked a herd of elk off my ambush point . Live and learn !
ASAT leafy suite, 3 legged little stool (more important for me because I am naturally curious and if I’m sitting down on the ground I move around way too much to look around and over vegetation so a stool allows me to see and stay still more). I have a tree stand and I’ll use it but then I get trapped into thinking I need to be in it when I so desperately know that actually the deer are over there somewhere!!! Hardest part for me is to just be patient and sit still. Tree stand helps with that but for those early mornings when I want to move…. Stool and a fir tree are my best friend.
Good Imfo Rich, i enjoy your YT channel. I too sit on the ground most of the time. Sometimes i will make a blind using Mono 20lb fishing line between a bush, tree or post and brush it in with local limbs by hanging them or leaning them on the fishing line. Easy and light.
We use the folding camp chairs with the shoulder strap carry bag talk about comfort can also use twistie thing to attatch to back pack if needed can hunt hours and hours out of those type chairs on game land and get way back in there where taking a climber would be miserable with all that weight
You’ve given us a lot of really good things to think about. Even the bottom of the boot idea showed attention to detail. Looking forward to your hunting season update.
I haven't hunted from the ground once yet this year. I haven't even had a chance to get the crossbow out. I've taken the vertical bow out a few times up a tree. But I always enjoyed sitting on the ground somewhere with my crossbow a few times in a season. Really wish we could hunt Sundays
Thanks Rich and so good to see you again. Your chat about tripods was fabulous and I have placed an order for a Bog Death grip tripod. I have been using a shooting stick but it gets a bit tedious on a long hunt to do that. Thanks for helping out this 70 year old hunter. The Rut is on in Wisconsin!
Good info, except for bad mouthing my ghillie suit lol. I carry mine in my pack and put it on when I am ready to set down. Multiple times I have had deer walk by less than 10' and never know I was there.
@@Deathbybunjie it absolutely does. I haven’t ran into a situation yet where I don’t have climbable trees, but I’m sure I will at some point lol. For reference, about how much does the killer instinct swat xp weigh?
Rich, thanks for another great video, sharing your knowledge and experience has helped me hugely as a new hunter. got it done yesterday and filled my tag at 5 yards with my saddle hunting setup.
The Main reason I’m up a tree is all the ticks are on the field edge. Haha I cannot deal with ticks at all. It ruins my hunt if I see more than one crawling on me.
Rich, I’m digging that turkey vest with kickers. I currently use a folding turkey seat and have a bad habit of falling asleep in it, LOL! Great info for hunting on the ground. I would recommend not wearing your ghillie into the woods. Put it on just before you get ready to sit down. 👌
I kayak in and use a saddle. Mobile to the max. However, I do LOVE just hunting from the ground. Of the 8 years I've been xbow hunting, I've only shot two deer out of a tree. The other 3 have been off the ground. We'll see what season 8 brings me. Rutcation starts tomorrow. The big boys are really starting to move...great video. Happy hunting all!
I take the vertical foregrip off one of my rifles and throw it on my stryker for hunting season. I find the vertical orientation of my left hand is much more stable than a traditional grip. I use downed trees (preferably clumps of downed cedars) to hide in and can set that vertical foregrip on on a horizontal/slightly diagonal downed tree and set myself up looking down the optic and i stay like that until dark.
@@Deathbybunjie thanks, it works for what I'm doing. I've been employing some more aggressive tactics lately - Following sign and pushing further into an area after a particular buck I've been watching and patterning (or at least trying to lol) for 3 years. Light and quiet Just me and the crossbow.
Ive used my turkey vest/seat many times when stalk deer hunting. Mine has huge pockets and water bottle pockets...also has a large rear hidden pocket that can hold and extra coat etc. Normally I only stalk hunt when its bitterly cold....moving keeps you warm.
Some great tips as usual Rich! I have used both the Cauldwell rest, and also I've added the "Death Grip" to an old BOG POD and I agree that these are critically important for steady shooting. I have two tree stands and one elevator stand, but this year all three of my deer were taken from the ground at only 15 yards! Next time we'll try some still hunting with a crossbow!
Great video Rich. I have a same bubble level on my Swat just like you do and I did make it a little better to see that bubble because that black back ground of the scope mount didn't help any. I had a bunch of white vinyl arrow wraps and I use that to stick a pieces of it on the bottom and the back of that level, trimmed it nicely and boom. That bubble is much better to see. I though I'd share that idea.
Great video Rich! I'm a long time turkey hunter and have used turkey vests but thats the first I have seen with fold out legs. I too am a 2XL guy and afraid those legs would sink down in the SE Georgia soil and I would be stuck in the muck! Lol
I have a fear of heights so I only hunt from the ground. I am thinking about trying a ground blind in the future but for right now I will stay on the ground
I never hunted from a tree, always on the ground, back in 1996 I created what I called the trick master game call extender, simply placing your game call 50ft up to 100ft away from you or with a decoy so the sound is coming from the decoy why? Because deer don't climb trees! Sold many of these trick masters from jays sporting goods just for one season and never took it any farther as its too easy to copy and get around a patent. Loved doing demos and watching people's face walking through the store when the sound of the deer came from the decoy!
Haven't done a video on it but it's not too hard, just replace the stock screw with another one from a hardware store that's a little bit longer, I mentioned that in this video and there are links to the death grip head itself in some of these comments, I pinned it to the top, I hope that helps!
Another great video Rich. I’m liking that turkey vest. I recently picked up the Ameristep outhouse. Very portable and easy to set up. And the logo is in gray now. Lol. And yeah, the X1 does not fit on the Caldwell sled I found out. Thanks for some great info and ideas.
