    Why you should consider upgrading to 12GB RAM with the Ryzen APU or other Integrated graphics.
    Especially when you consider that use lose 2GB or more as hardware reserved or a portion of usable RAM.

    If you have a Laptop or desktop PC that is using an AMD Ryzen APU or Athlon APU you will find that the motherboard or chipset with automatically reserve a section of your system RAM for the graphics adaptor.
    It usually will be something like this
    4GB System RAM with be approx 3.95GB for Windows and 512MB for the APU or graphics adaptor. Roughly one eighth 1/8 of the RAM avaialable.
    Moving to 8GB will actually then take a quarter or 1/4 of the RAM or 2GB for the APU leaving around 5.95GB for Windows or whatever OS you have.
    Upgrading to 12GB (4GB + 8GB) Will still take 2GB from the available RAM leaving you with around 10GB free so this is around a sixth or 1/6 which still ins't great but is the best option when on a budget. Ideally i would recommend 16GB for a little extra breathing room and hopefully a matched pair of RAM but it isn't entirely necessary.
    Hopefully this will be helpful for anyone in a similar situation and thinking of upgrading there APU based system.

    Thanks for the video, Mike! I think that many people are unaware of the fact that most integrated APU (CPU+GPU) solutions actually take away from system RAM being "shared memory". Adding a 8gb stick to a 4gb system will make a huge difference! I do have to add that having paired RAM (ie: 2 identical sticks of memory) will allow the computer to run in dual channel memory mode, which really helps out with performance.

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  4 года назад +7

      Good point! dual channel is a good way of boosting performance. These Ryzen based laptops will actually do dual channel as long as the speeds are the same regardless of memory size but obviously as the memory usage gets higher its benefits are reduced when the smaller stick is at its limit

    Two things I hate from laptops manufacturers: 1. The welded 4 GB RAM (Hey ASUS, can you hear me? XD), they put the lowest speed and size of RAM to save some money, and 2. You can't adjust the shared VRAM value (Hey Lenovo, this one is for you). So, the new RAM standard now is at least 12 GB of RAM on laptops and 16 GB on desktops. Thank you Mike!

    Hey, I hope this can help you if you're about to assemble a new Ryzen Apu. In my case, buying an A320 motherboard with a Ryzen 3200g and 16GB Corsair Vengeance Ram was a mistake. From the day I bought it (first pc btw) it kept crashing while gaming and sometimes while surfing the internet, UNTILL, I took out one of the two rams that it stopped crashing permanently. Moral of the story.
    1. PC Partpicker may be wrong when it comes to compatibility between components. ALWAYS check your desired ram's QVL to see if they're supported by your cpu.
    2. Maybe the motherboard is too basic, although it said "Ryzen 3rd gen supported" but I'm inclined to say the ram is the issue because the box said "Supports Intel 7th Gen processor". Again, first build.
    Finally, what its said on the video is true. When it comes to integrated graphics you need at least 12 GB IF you want to play games.
    2GB ram for Windows
    2GB for your Apu
    Plus your game's minimum ram requirement, around 4GB if playing on low. Either way, you'd be tight on ram.
    So now you know, at least 12 GB and don't forget to triple check your Ryzen and Ram's QVL. Good Luck!

      the 3200 g has a fairly weak memory controller . 2933 is the rated maximum and ive found that crashes with many modules at xmp settings above 2933 . I guess the timings are too tight . I switched to two modules(corsair vengeance 2x8gb 3000 cl15) and it can run above 3000 . chipset shouldn't matter , just the memory controller on the cpu die . Ryzen dram calculator can help if you have access to timings on a320. if it still doesn't boot then you back off the speed a bit .

      It depends. Many APU systems allow you to change the VRAM window in the BIOS, I'm unfamiliar with the A512-43. At work, we had a system with 512MB RAM., with 128MB allocated to the VRAM window. I improved performance a lot by decreasing the VRAM window to 32MB in the BIOS.
      If your BIOS supports it, you might even want to decrease the VRAM to 512MB on bootup if you won't be gaming, and increase it to 4GB on bootup for gaming.

    I have read all coments and...I bought ryzen 5 4650G with 8G of ram. I don´t know if i can change the values of shared memory on my motherboard (B550M chipset) to increase the limit beyond 2G. I mean; I can´t see right now if that is possible (once I update the bios) because is not in my hands until tomorrow (or three days).
    Anyway, I see very interesting to buy a stick with 4G and add it to the total amount of ram (12G).
    To be honest, I would like to use that stick (4G) entirely for shared memory. If not...then 2G of it :( :(
    I wonder if it is a good idea at any case (I just want to use the APU on my desktop, not an external Graphic card).

    Im a little confused, I have an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U with 8gb ram, only 5.95 usable as you said. I see people saying that if I add 8/16gb in one of the 4Gb slots that some speed will be capped due to the remaining 4gb of ram? I'm confused whether this is correct and what this actually means

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  3 года назад +1

      it is right but won't be a negative effect, the upgrade will be noticeable and worth while
