Following our recent trip to Mexico and the videos we shared from that trip, a lot of you are curious if we're planning to leave Ecuador and move to Mexico.

I read that in January 2023, Mexico raised their minimum monthly income to qualify for a resident visa from US $2,700 to $3,200 a month. It is based on the increase in their minimum wage. Most people who receive only Social Security don't get that much. I lived in Mexico for a few years several years ago, and back then, the minimum was only about $1,000 a month, and I had a resident visa. Mexico's minimum is now about the same as Spain's. But Portugal's and several other Latin American countries minimums are much lower, so maybe I'll move to one of them. I'm currently living in the US in a government owned apartment building ($700 per month) in southern California. I liked my $210 apartment in Chapala, Mexico better. Here is like a warmer version of Seattle, Washington - homeless tents and all ;-( . Lisa W.
I enjoyed 3 months in Argentina recently. Came back to Florida to help my 83 yr old dad. I've spent about 7 months in 4 cities in Mexico. I seem to not handle the local bacteria very well, got sick to varying degrees in all 4 places. Not sick and then better, but ongoing stomach upsets and at times really miserable. Argentina was my 14th country and the one with the least issues of the ones I spent a month or more. Amazing scenery and great beef. But I truly missed access to spicy foods. Pretty bland food in Argentina. Tastes good but not spicy. But what will keep me in Argentina is it's crazy cheap if you have an outside dollar income. A $20k American pension in Argentina is comparable to having 3-4 times as much to spend in the States depending on where you're at. I've been to Mexico, Colombia, Albania, Georgia and a few others. Argentina is cheaper.
Next trip abroad , take cayenne pepper capsules, oil of oregano and a probiotics daily to avoid stomach upset

I discovered, after years of living through out Latin America, that I couldn’t eat any raw vegetables of any kind.
Everything had to be cooked.
I’d have shredded lettuce on a burrito and get sick.
It had to see heat before I could eat it.
Unfortunately you cannot drink or cook with the water in Mexico. Some people still get sick and I seem to get a bad stomach virus everytime I'm in Mexico City. Outisde of Mexico city I didn't get sick but a good tip is don't cook with or drink the tap water ever in Mexico. Even the locals use bottled water, they usually have a delivery service but you can buy jugs at Oxxo or the grocery stores and mom and pop shops. The chicken I think can make people sick, their standards are a little different than in the US so be careful with chicken that smells funny, and be careful with street food if you're planning on traveling the next day. lol
FYI, your Mexico I fo is out of date. The 6 months perpetual visa is back in. As for pollution it depends where you go. We bought a house in Merida and we love it...Mexico is a big country

We are considering following in your footsteps, getting a place in Merida, so interested in knowing more. How do you handle the summers? Is it bad, or bearable?

@@Peter-xq9tz So sorry I missed your comment. Watch you every week. My partner and I are Canadaians living in Florida while he works here. We dont yet live in Merida, although we finally purchased a property there in 2020 and just finished a renovation on it. While we found it humid and hot often we looked at it the same way we did in Canada but opposite! LOL In Canada when it snows we spend time inside with a book etc. In Florida (as in Merida) when its hot as old heck, we spend time at the pool or inside with AC and a good book. What we love about Merida is it is 1,000,000+ people yet you can live in centro and get the smalll town vibe, which we prefer, AND still get all your creature comforts such as Uber ($3.00 gets you almost anywhere) big city grocery, walmart, costco and sams, all withing a short Uber ride. AND it's more laid back and not the party life of so many other cities in Mexico! I'll be watching you!
Cuenca-Ecuador is top of my list to retire to. I have visited Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Peru and none of them beat beautiful Cuenca! I felt in love with the people, the food and how clean and well kept it is. A beautiful conservative city with a cosmopolitan vibe.
I spent a month in Loja a few years ago, spent some of that time in Vilcabamba. Enjoyed it all very much. Never got to Cuenca. Since there's so many expats in Cuenca, has that had an effect on prices? Has your income vis a vis the locals caused any resentment among them? I liked Loja because of the climate at 6000' elevation. Is Cuenca a lot hotter, more humid?
What was Peru like?
I had an exchange semester in high school studying Spanish in Quito and living in a host family around the year 2000. I have been all over the world since then but the Ecuador stay was the best time of my life. I have been watching your channel for a long time but kept quiet haha. To be fair though, you weren't really fair with your estimations about Mexico's disadvantages, and some were flat out wrong. Mexico is around 7 times larger than Ecuador, and many of your points simply do not apply if you take into account all the places that Mexico has to offer. Just to name the most prominent ones:
The climate you're looking for can definitely be found in several states in Mexico, the same with pollution-free locations.
Mexico is famous for its fresh and vastly varied produce, although being as large as it is, you may have to know where to look for especially in the big cities. But if a town or neighborhood where you can find fresh produce in every corner is what you want, we have plenty of those too.
Ecuador is actually higher than Mexico in the global crime rate of 2022 by world population review, so that point is actually exactly the opposite. It's not accurate to mention the few cities that are the gross outliers in Mexico and paint the whole country with that brush.
Of course this is not to say that you have to prefer one country over the other, just that a more informed consideration would look different for Mexico.

Seems with the long term visa difficulty in Mexico right now, it’s a non-starter.
6 of 7 most dangerous cities are in Mexico. Oh my god, where did they get these numbers? yes, In Mexico about 80 people died every day due to drug violence but if you are not in that bad market you don't get killed. Just in the last 11 months, there have been more than 700 mass shootings in the US. Why didn't they mention anything about it. and I'm pretty sure that crime rate against civilians in Ecuador is a lot higher than Mexico. Yes, crime rate is not zero in Mexico if we are honest, nowhere in the world is zero. It's ok to say that Ecuador for them is better. They can say whatever they want and their opinion is respected but to say inaccurate facts just to make their point is just wrong. I honestly hope that they don't go back to Mexico but we will follow them in their next country.

The airfares are not really cheap from America. I live in St Louis, Missouri, and paid over $650 for airfare from St Louis to Mexico,just a month ago. Also, I got a 180 day visa in Monterey, Mexico. They asked how long I wanted to stay, I told them 180, and they gave me 6 months.
You should try booking a flight from STL to BNA, DFW or IAH and then fly into Mexico. You get the cheapest flights when you use a hub 😉
I think the days on your Visa depends on what airport you enter.
When I Visit Mexico City they usually only give me 30 days.
When I visit a smaller tourist traffic airport like Guadalajara I also get the 180 days like you have said.
We only got 30 days at CDMX.

I love this channel. It is delightful and informative. As the world turns, Ecuador's visa changes have moved me away. I am leaning towards Columbia or Uruguay, but I have a lot more investigative work to do. As the recession kicks in, I need to know how I can bounce around the Dollar and USA digital government changes. But you can be sure Amelia and JPs advices will be very important.
I'm from monterrey mexico, my husband is from cuenca ecuador (we live in nyc). I would love to move to Cuenca in a couple of years, but my ecuatorian husband likes mexico better 😁😁
I’m moving to Ajijic, Lake Chapala area in a few weeks!!! I love you guys, but I’m called to defend (😘) my choice! Ajijic is the most magical place I’ve ever experienced. I live in Orlando and Ajijic is so not humid 😂! I was there in august, unusually hot for them (75 at 11am!!!! 85 high). Y’all are spoiled in all the right ways! I’m over city living. Including Guadalajara. As you pointed out, it so depends on your personal needs. My flight is nonstop, 3 1/2 hours! 25 minutes from the airport to Ajijic. I have a daughter in Florida so that’s important to me. They actually put the CARE back in healthcare! And the community is magical too! Ecuador sounds lovely, but I’m excited for my adventure! BTW, your videos on the lakeside area were awesome! ❤

Amelia and Jp , another great video! I like that you both stated the good and bad of both countries. But I am still choosing Ecuador! I really like that Ecuador is small , affordable , walkable and have many places to live with low humidity. One thing that would be difficult for me to get used to , would be paying many bills in person. Because I pay everything online and hardly ever have cash on me.

You were not 100% correct on the visa issue it was up to the officer or point of entry into Mexico that determined how much time to give someone on their visa .Baja California was always 6 months.Also Mexico has gone back to the 6 month visa all over the country .The 6 month visa has been back for about 5 months or longer.

On your recommendations I spent 4 months in Manta last winter. You were spot on about everything. Was going to go back to Ecuador, but decided on Thailand instead. In Bangkok now and plan on staying in this area. Like Ecuador, people are very friendly and helpful, markets and parks everywhere, went ahead and applied for senior Visa. Much much farther away from USA, but mostly everything just modern. Weather similar, but a little more humid. You might wish to consider comparison video of Thailand and Ecuador. Ecuador a bit more accommodating for older people.
I was just in Mexico and I had no problem getting 180 days. If you don't know your return date,, all you have to do is buy a $15 reservation from a website like onward ticket. It's just a reservation that automatically cancels in 24 or 48 hours. But the printed reservation looks just like a a boarding pass. Just get the return reservation about 170 days from your arrival and you should get 180 days with no issues.
We were given 30 days. They used to give 6 months regardless. We’ve heard from several other RUclipsrs that it’s rare to get the 6 month stamp anymore.
@@AmeliaAndJP The thing about Mexico is it's inconsistent. Things can change...and then change again. Mexico City and Cancun airports have the reputation for being the strictest. But my reservation from Onward Ticket that looked like a boarding pass worked with no problem and I flew into Cancun.
You used to be able to extend whatever number of days they give you at Customs by going to an immigration office. It's a pain in the butt, but easy enough. I've done it in the past. I'm not sure if it's still possible though.

I can’t say that this was a good comparison. I live in a beautiful colonial city in Central Mexico at 6700 feet elevation. Walk everywhere, no car., no heat, no air conditioning. You described Guadalajara (not Mexico) well. Your description of Ecuador is more like where I live in Mexico!

Move to Ajijic/ Chapala. 👍. This area needs a channel like yours. You’ll be close to Guadalajara too. And other places. You’ll find a nice apartment. Maybe my neighborhood in LaFloresta. My street is one of the streets you walked up. Also Chapala is very walkable, has Soriana etc

I have heard great things about that city and looking at re trying Mexico as I went as teen and younger but on west coast and not good experience and scary in some places.
I was surprised by the heat you experienced in National Geographic’s second best climate , Ajijic/Lake Chapala. I believe in the past , these areas were more moderate climates , as was the case 30 years ago in Florida but now these areas seem to be 4 seasons of varying summer. Bumme, dude :-)

I noticed that about the produce markets/tiendas. They don't seem to have as many in Mexico as I find in places like Colombia, and Ecuador. They have them in Mexico, but they are not as many and they may be far away from your location. It seems on this aspect they have become very americanized and you need to go to the big grocery stores: Soriana, Walmart, and Chedraui. Oxxxo, and 7-eleven and the mom and pop shops carry a few basic items, chips, soda, and beer only.
It's unfair to rate mexicos negatives on the basis of Guadalajara....big cities have big problems.more services more traffic.ive liked your videos in the past, but it seems you may want to be thoughtful with your following, and where you at want to take new and existing viewers. Everything's not this or that here or there. Giving good information and less bias and judgement works better for me!

We have been to more than 15 cities in Mexico. We talked about our recent trip because it was fresh in our minds. Our comments were very balanced and based on 20+ years of visiting Mexico.

@@AmeliaAndJP No. There are Zillions of towns and little cities in Mexico, which is a huge country, without pollution, traffic, and you GENERALIZED as it was alll Mexico. That is not fair to your viewers. Mexico is light years better.
I think you just have to follow your heart! I adore Mexico, as I did as a young backpacker and now as a retired woman. I live in Jalisco and it seemed watching that Mexico is not especially lucky for you. It is funny because my husband and I were village arts importers and we always thought we’d end up in Ecuador.

Really can’t talk about pollution and some Other issues without specifying the city- Guadelahara and Mexico City have more pollution. And guadelahara def has more crime than most other cities . Should specify the city or cities rather than generalizing “Mexico”
Pollution is bad where there are millions of people and Mexico has a lot of big cities with millions of people. We’ve never experienced pollution that bad in Ecuador’s big cities.

The cons presented here are mainly in the large cities. I suggest spending more time outside of large Mexican cities, such as the Oaxacan coast, for a more fair and balanced presentation. Also, when crossing the border by vehicle, tourists are typically given 180 days.
I think a more extended weather report in Mexico is missing in your video. Yes, there are very hot and humid places in the Yucatan Peninsula, Veracruz, and at some degree in Guerrero on the Pacific (South). Northern Mexico can be very hot but not humid. Baja is almost identical to California weather, and Central Mexico, in general, most likely is like what you describe in Ecuador. Central Mexico is usually 75-85 Fahrenheit in about six states.

You guys love Ecuador a lot I can tell. Been following your channel for almost 2 years now. I’d love to see you guys visit Bolivia, I feel like you’d like it. Cities like Santa Cruz, Cochabomba, Sucre, and La Paz. I was there for 3 weeks earlier this year. And felt like it’s so underrated. I haven’t been to Ecuador yet but I feel like it’s similar. Yes. There were a few hot days per year. But honestly, the weather was so mild and even that it almost felt pedestrian to this native Floridian.

I think Ecuador is beautiful, and I’ve poured over your videos for so long now, but, I don’t think I’d like the weather.
I lived in Costa Rica for 6 months at high elevation, and I didn’t like the cloudy mist that hung over my house and neighborhood. I always felt chilled to the bone from dampness. I didn’t drive in the morning before the fog lifted. The locals thought I was loco. Lol.
I'm a Ecuadorian Citizen who lives in Guayaquil. I follow your Chanel because it's very interesting how you guy's think of our country as well as your living here, and last but not least you fellas makes me realize how wonderful is this land. Is it me or are there no bars on the windows in Ecuador? In every video I have seen with footage from Mexico there are bars on the windows. But seemingly not in the Ecuador videos...? Also, I would like to know what you suggest for visiting Ecuador for a couple of weeks to get a feel for what it's like...where to go, where to rent, etc. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks! 😊
I just checked the US Dollar vs Mexican Peso chart. 5 years ago it was 19.72 pesos per dollar, this morning it was 19.74 per dollar. So your claim that it fluctuates wildly does not hold water. While it is easier to convert dollars to dollars in Ecuador, it is simple math to convert 20 pesos per dollar. If I go into a store or a restaurant and something is 100 pesos, I know that it is roughly 5 dollars. A three bedroom casita one block from the beach in Mazatlan is 20,000 pesos. Divide by 20 and you have $1000 per month. Easy enough.
We didn’t say it fluctuates wildly. We said it can fluctuate. 10 years ago it was 12 to 1.
@@AmeliaAndJPOK, i watched the video again and at about 6.50 you said it "fluctuates quite a bit." (not wildly) In 5 years it has barely changed. In 10 years, sure, it has gone from 12:1 to 20:1 which is to the benefit of Americans by almost 50%.
Oh I wish you had of come to Merida. Its the Yucatan and its different here. The second safest city in North America, a traditional but modern Mayan city with lovely people and with all of the conveniences. I live in Centro with no car, I have a driver if I need to go somewhere I cant walk to but there are Frutuerias in every Colonia and Mercados in the squares. Its a small very liveable city. Come to Merida guys and check it out 😊

@@Peter-xq9tz Ive been in Merida for eight months. I arrived in the hottest month of the year and acclimatized with ceiling fans but I love the heat. The summer is amazing and i spent a lot of time in the pool bobbing around. Now in December the weather is fabulous, 68 overnight and 85 at 3PM. So much to do and the city is opening up after the pandemic with events and many new restaurants. I am lucky and found a house to rent in centro by Santa Ana. I will build eventually but while Im deciding I cannot believe my luck. Having said this I saw a lovely home for rent on Facebook today in Garcia Gineres. The city is growing and the areas are distinctly diferent. Centro is a traditional Mexican city, the north is new with gated communities and malls. It is still though, a manageable size. Come visit and see, everyone is different but I love Merida.
The problem with Ecuador right now is that the Narco cartels are growing a lot and that worries me. Lasso ( The Ecuadorian president) is not doing much to control the narco cartels, and if he doesn't do something drastic about it Ecuador might become like Colombia in the 80s
The Narco cartels in Ecuador are coming from Mexico and Columbia . The problem with Ecuador is its a Latin American country… that’ll never change. Ava’s there’s other issues too like Ecuador’s relationship and reliance on Russia and using the US dollar as a currency, this puts Ecuador playing the middle. There appears to be the inability to protect oneself as well, and while in word Ecuador says life, Liberty, etc are guaranteed - without your personal ability to use force against someone trying to take that away… the guarantee is not worth much - and that’s what makes the USA unique . Many expats don’t seem to care about that, but that’s a hot house/ green house logic, since most of us haven’t had those liberties threatened in our lives . So I guess giving up a right to bear arms, free speech, assemble, protest , a right to a trial by our peers etc is no biggie

Paying attention to the dollar/peso fluctuation is not difficult; just look at it once a day. When the exchange rate is in your favor send money into your Mexican bank account form your US bank. Not hard.
Why aren’t you doing filming in Ecuador ? Your footage is repeated, filmed year, two ago. For your regular followers, and future movers to Ecuador New views, opinions, insights are appreciated.
Very little has changed and we’ve filmed most of the popular areas. It’s also very difficult for us to film in EC now that we are more recognizable. Lots of people stop us to talk, and we love meeting our fans, but it’s hard to film.

Hey Guys, great job on this review of Mexico vs. Ecuador. As you know, we live in Peru where we have been for many years but recently we did a marathon road trip of Ecuador and we loved it! It has many similarities to Peru, but also has its own unique character. . .though we were seeking sun during our trip, it escaped us for the most part during our trip, but the places we visited and the people we met more than made up for the lack of sun which we were seeking. I have to say, as an impartial third party who loves Mexico dearly, I would still also choose Ecuador over Mexico for the same reasons you mentioned here. Enjoy Ecuador for us until we return!!
Here is a subject that is off topic but of interest to me; can you drink the water in Ecuador or Mexico or should one just drink bottled water? If it is bottled water and it is delivered in those 5 gallon jugs, that is about 42 pounds. How do older people or people with back problems lift those containers into the water cooler containers? Any plumbing issues in Ecuador or Mexico; toilet flushing, etc?

You can drink tap water in parts of Ecuador, but not the whole country. Cuenca is drinkable.

Great video guys, i just want to tell You about the weather in Mex Jalisco is a state known for hot and humid weather there are a lot of states in the central Mex (inland) or the northern part of the country that get several snowfalls per winter. And these places can get really cold, Even cities that are colder than Albuquerque NM in winter. So definitly there are some places really hot in Mex, but overall México is a country packed with mountains, deserts and volcanoes, and there are a lot of cities located on the top of mountains or in the middle of nowhere and those place can get freezing cold. And get some snow, Even cities like Monterrey in Nuevo Leon that it's the size of San Antonio Tx, the last three or four winters has got some snow , and is a city that in summer can get close to 110°

I live in Texas. I wanted to drive down to Yucatán for a month this December. I decided not to, because I didn’t want to get endlessly hassled and shook down by corrupt police. Its a shame because they’re probably losing millions or billions from USA and Canada tourists but they haven’t yet figured it out
Super, yeah good idea not to do that drive. There are also Narco's who you may interrupt as they are doing something and you may not survive that. There are also kidnappings. Puebla a very popular expat destination has recently had 10 kidnapping of expats. This includes some removal of body parts like fingers and ears to show they really mean business when the mail that to your family. I never go to Mexico anymore.

They seemed similar where we stayed, but prices vary by city/area.
We have heard from many people that the automatic 180 day tourist visa is slowly coming back. Lots of complaints from business owners have been heard.
Mexico is hot….if you are in a hot city. You want cool…go to a cool city. Come on guys…Mexico City is over 7000 ft high.

I believe Ecuador has much cheaper beachfront condos/properties. Love Sayulita but real estate is limited, prices are high.
The biggest drawback, is to get permanent residency, you can only leave for 90 days out of two years, right? So you can’t even be a snowbird and go for six months and back in the states for the other six months.
This is correct, right? Or is there a way around this?
You can get a 3 month extension every 12 months so you can stay in EC for 6 months per year with the 90 day tourist visa plus a 90 day extension.
Normally we absolutely love your videos, however this one was kind of disappointing on one point in particular. It seems like you compared Ecuador to Mexico only using Guadalajara and Chapala for your comparison. Mexico is way more than Jalisco, and there are many cities that are way different and IMO better than that. Ecuador is high on our list because of your videos, but I think you sold Mexico short.

Older people who are looking to relocate are hindered because of the language barrier and the difficulty in learning a second language. In Ecuador are you aware of any expat groups, organizations or classes that specialize in teaching senior citizens Spanish?
I'm a US citizen with 22 years living in Mexico. I live in Torreon Coahuila with my Mexican wife Margarita. Together we teach English and Spanish. I'm 72 years old.
There are a lot of ways to learn Spanish in Ecuador but we haven’t heard of any that specialize in teaching seniors.

That has been our stumbling block, learning the language at our ages (71 and 74), We are very healthy and active but we realize everyday living is going to require at least a basic comfort level with conversational Spanish and older people just don't grasp a new language as quickly as younger people do. I wonder if there is an app that does translation?

As I recall, there's a unique, soviet era immigration Treaty between Russia & Ecuador that may benefit you. Regardless, no country makes it easier to immigrate, nor has the geographical variety for your lifestyle. The looming "reset" & digital currencies will obliterate most people's bank holdings, due to regulatory changes in 2008 that let banks "opt in"/seize deposits. Consider monetizing in metals, nothing comes close to what "Kinesis" offers - check them out, but get outta banks while you can! Life here in Ecuador is all that you make it or want it to be, Vick. We have been considering moving to Ecuador and Mexico. The food in Ecuador is a big motivator for me for health reasons. But I also need the sun. We had considered Olon but then realized there is barely any sun for about 5 months. Is there anywhere else you would recommend in Ecuador that's warm and sunny?

The flight time from Miami to Ecuador or vice-versa is usually 4:10 h. Sometimes even less, when there's not much air traffic in Miami Int" airport. That's less than flying from NYC to LA. 15:48

That’s actually not the case. It rarely goes above 90F on the coast of Ecuador. It’s cooler than Mexico due to weather coming over the Andes.
Getting around without a Car would be a big Plus for me . Less stress , being a 'part of' the local township . Walking is an excellent form of exercise and well being . cheers .

Big beautiful malls? Sure, but is that even a why? Not sure (I'm Mexican) . I don't live in MX but Mexico is great on many things: Large country, close to almost anywhere, people are really accommodating, food, etc.

For all the reasons you stated that Ecuador was better than Mexico, Mexico has good quality health care at an affordable price, the produce is always fresh, there are places that have nice weather year round, the people are friendly, not to mention the food which I consider to be the best in the world and yes there are places where it is safe if you just take the time to do some research. I'm sorry you guys were robbed when you were down there, however, most people by far do not experience that. You're more likely to get pickpocketed or robbed in Paris or Rome than you are in Mexico City. I wish you all the best in Ecuador however, as for me, I will be retiring in Mexico.
