VPN does not bring you security. VPN only changes your access point to the internet to make it look as if you were connected from somewhere else. In fact, VPN can be less secure, because all your personal data are re-routed through the servers of the VPN provider, who could potentially collect them without you even knowing. NordVPN's advertising is misleading to say the least. I do not know, how much they pay, but their product placement in so many RUclipsr's videos has already become a running joke - something like Rogue: Shadow Legends.
OK, zkusím po delší době připomenout. Slyšela jste už o službě Patreon?
I cannot agree more about Valentine's Day. It's one of the most disgusting times of the year. The US has managed to turn an honest celebration of true feeling into a contest of commercials spending. I couldn't hate Valentine's Day celebrations in America more and I am holding back. I apologize for being so jaded about it. I haven't experienced the holiday in Czech Republic yet so my opinion is not the most informed but it sounds like a good day.
Every holydays is just capitalist consuming events. World know nothing about history of holidays, they dont know why Christmas is celebrating, they never been in Church but just want gifts. Selfish hypocritical cheap poisoned society...
To be fair, any day off from work sounds like a good day. No? :-D
It is like many of our holidays owned by the candy, Hallmark card, and flower concessions.
I would translate literaly the day of fallen in love, because it is more about the people that had fallen in love than the love itself at least that is the way I see this holiday.
Májka se hlídá celý květen.Dřív jí stavěl mládenec před okny své vyvolené.❤️❤️Jinak, ale musím říct velmi pěkné video!👍 Jako vždy.👏👏
As an American jaded by the crass commercialization that has corrupted its way into everything, I'm very much looking forward to my first May Day in Prague.
Vtipné a trefné jako vždy !!! 👍
Pokud 1.5. nenajdeš rozkvetlou třešeň, funguje to i pod břízou. 🍀
38 seconds in, and I already agree with the Czechs! 😂
If we burn the witches, we dont have to buy them presents. Duh.
😂
Love this!
As a young man I used to consider the first of May a bit tacky and overplayed but nowdays I enjoy it as a cozy opportunity for some nice walk or maybe a delicious dessert with my wife.
It doesn't need to be a huge celebration with some saccharin sweet gestures or enormous bouquets. But that's a very personal opinion. 🙂
I prefer the Czech version because I am Cuban and in my country is a celebration of communism and a big plus I am married to a Czech man and we live in USA. Thank you for your video is beautiful explanation
Here in South Bohemia we realy make the maypole and guard it through the night. And it is cut in celebration by the end of May. It is a kind of fight between vilages because people (usually young men) try to cut it and they can be realy inventive. For example years ago came a tactor with drey and passing by a maypole in one vilage suddenly young man hiden down in the drey stood up with chainsaw and cut it down. My teacher, who saw it in a 4 AM standing on her balcony shout to the vilage "They are cutting our maypole!" She said that before she went to the school there already had been a new maypole standing to not be ashamed. 😁
My older sisters remember that there was a problem to go to parade (before revolution) one year because somebody cut the maypole here and took the block and put it just behind our door - they cut it to the blocks and gave those to people they were responsible to build the maypole - about ten different people (the maypole was build by a spa here and the people were top managers.
Yes, the guarding usually makes some new pairs. But those customs change from place to place. I have collegue from north Moravia and she heard about burning the witches first here in South Bohemia. And guarding the maypole also. This custom - witches and first may as a love day is similar in Bavaria (Germany).
In now days in the region of Haná, there is a celebration for building the maypole, and then after a month a celebration for a destroying the maypole by make it fall. Interestingly, for some reason we put a bottle of rum up there, and then it will be destroyed by the fall.... hmmm....
btw it's weird that the girl from north moravia didn't heard about the witches. In Olomouc, haná etc.. there are a lot celebrations with burning a witch

Your description is very nice. You already have a better understanding of Czech culture than many Czechs. I have learnt a new English word today: "maypole". I did not know, this has such a neat English translation.
And you are completely right with the compulsory (pardon: "voluntary") Labor Day processions. Until today, the word "První máj" often appears in jokes and parodies.

On to je záměr komerčního valentýna. Nezbývá než vlézt do restaurace a platit a platit.
I watched a serious Maypole celebration on a small Austrian village once. Pretty amazing affair. Thanks Diane. I prefer the Czech version to our version any day.
just some rhymes from Karel Hynek Máchas poem "Máj":
byl pozdní večer - první máj it was late evening - first of May
večerní máj - byl lásky čas an evening May - it was a time of Love
what do you want more...
I know the 'May pole' (Májka) tradition as that a man used to bring it in front of the house of the one he courted and if it didn't get stolen he could ask her out. But I don't know how it actually is. This is just the word of mouth in my region, as they say 😂 But yes, I definitely like 1st of May more than Valentines. Usually it is nice outside and people just enjoy their time together,it is amazing. ❤

This is the perfect contrast between American and Czech cultures. I prefer the Czech.
the commercials of Valentine day are so widespread that even my mistress (we both are czechs... well, mostly) felt into the feeling that if I will ignore it would mean that I don't have so romantic feelings towards her. so 14th 2nd 2023 as memorial of valentine I gave her tiny pink model of that tank covered with tiny pink flowers. she loves pink :)
I hate Valentine’s Day and refuse to celebrate it. It should be about love, but it turned into a day about expensive gifts. I always cringe when I receive newsletters from companies, telling me I should get smartphone for my loved one… what is romantic about a phone? On the other hand “chraň tě ruka Páně” if I won’t get kissed under cherry blossom on may first. I love this tradition. It’s so romantic. It’s a moment between two people in love. And it fits with the whole theme of spring, when nature is waking up after winter and animals start to… make more animals 😁 even for our anniversary, we don’t give each other gifts, we just buy or do something we can both enjoy - for example go on a short vacation.
Skvělé video. Díky za něj :)
My wife convinced me at the beginning of the relationship that it is necessary to celebrate both holidays. St. Valentine's Day with gifts in February, and the day of love in May with kisses .
One of the nicest symbolic acts of love that I ever saw, was about 15 years ago, when I was 25... back then I worked as a caregiver (of a disabled man on a wheelchair with a memory problem).... he was 45 and had 2 adult siblings and both parents still living. He and his parents went to hawaii every February for a few weeks to be with his sister who lived there. I was able to go for a week and even take a person with me (I had no boyfriend at the time, so I took one of my parents).... On Valentine's day there was a dinner for all of us (there were at least 5-6 adults).... after dinner every single person got a token of appreciation from the hosting family..... To this day it was probably my favorite valentines day..... (it felt real and no one was left out, no one)..... people who care about each other together expressing the fact that they care and appreciate the other people.
For me, I plan to go to the traditional Tatra veteran rally that is being held of 1st of May each year in Bratislava. I have missed it in the recent years, but this year I want to check it out once again, especially since it is the twentieth anniversary.
Definitely 1st of May. It is warm. 🥰
There's one more thing about the maypole (at least it used to be in my village) - willing single girls would attach a headscarf (šátek) on the top of the maypole before it is erected and the single men would then climb it to claim the headscarf and the girl (but of course it could also be done by a couple to test the strength of the relationship).
Celebration of people in love ❤️
Hi Jen, the Old Quibbler at your service once again! Because Valentine's Day was once used as an excuse to end a relationship with me (I didn't even know there was such a holiday yet - what an amazing way to learn about it!) and I was quite upset because of at the time (lost 7 kg of weight in 3 days - highly recommended as diet!), I can responsibly say that I hate Valentine's Day from the bottom of my heart! It's not his fault (it is the lady's) and so I don't blame him - I just programmatically hate it and therefore don't celebrate it in any way. Which does not mean that I celebrate May 1 any more - for me, it really just means kissing the lady(s) (the ones that survived "the Witches") under a cherry blossom tree (so that they do not dry up within a year) and letting the rest go... ;) But nice video as alwyas anyway! Keep up the good work! ;)
Nice topic, good for comparison.
Of course, 1st May is better. 😀 But Petřín can get crowded. Once we went there as a family and there were literally lines of people waiting by cherry trees to kiss under them. 😄
I don't even know about some of mentioned traditions. I only heard about maypole a few years ago for the first time. They have them in Slovakia, too, and I have seen it in Germany as well. Possibly more countries have such tradition. I heard that obviously, an erected long chunk of wood symbolised something else erected... and villages competing...
I live in Canada and refuse to celebrate Valentines day. I see it only as a marketing ploy, lol. I also don't celebrate 1. maj, because I always thought it's only for unmarried couples.

Jen, please, can you make some similar video when the time of summer solstice come ? It is time of my most beloved celebration of nature and life - Saint John's Eve or older slavic Kupala night. A magic night.
Hi Jennifer,
Sir_Mac here, as always!
I have an interesting idea for you. In the village of Koloveč, there is a magic mill. It doesn't mill grain into flour, but it is designed to mill old or grumpy or ugly wives into their opposites. Old woman becomes young, ugly becomes beautiful, grumpy becomes happy, frigid becomes passionate, etc.
I know, it is not fair, because the mill "transforms" only women, not men.
And if you want watch an american movie with the same base idea, like about the mill, just swapping the mill for microprocessor implemented in a head, watch "Stepford Wives" (starring Nicole Kidman and Glenn Close).
Nowadays jumping over the bonefire is usually done on the previous night ;) I'd say the two holydays kinda organicaly merge into each other, even tho people tend to celebrate one more than the other (imo)
that woman is amazing, she is like Mirror to Us, the Czech
You are right Jen, the Valentine's day has become a bit too commercialized and giving kids presents on Valentine's day is a bit too much. However, I don't know if I'm more American (in attitude) than Czech.-) Because, yesterday, I drove more than 100 km one way, "just" because I wanted to see my gf and we went for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. Not to mention, I also bought her a bottle of liquor and flowers.-))

Ja ji ani neumim a taky ziju :D
Především je 1. máj příležitost vzít deku, svou oblíbenou ženu a své oblíbené šampaňské a jít si s nimi sednout pod rozkvetlý strom. To je docela dobrý plán n odpoledne.

Neslavím ani jedno. :) A mám raději květen než únor.
I recommend visiting Vlašim for 1. máj in one of the biggest english type park in central europe
Hi Jen, great video. I hope you didn't melt your TV with those candles. :)
To be honest, even the original story of St. Valentine sounds much more pragmatical and less about love :D Men got married, so they don't have to go to war... I'm sure they all loved their spouses very much and that's the true reason why they got married! And thus celebration of love! /sarcasm off
I know it's not love related, but have you had a chance to see Volha yet? You have tons of other things to do, and it's five quite long episodes, but it's the best thing I've see on Czech telly for a long time. A review would be good.

May 1, is Czech Labor Day. It's a holiday, just like September 4, will be the American Labor Day.
Remember I read «Happy days in Czechoslovakia»
I prefer our Love Day because it's not so commercial as St.Valentine' s Day. I don't like St.Valentine' s Day because I don't think love has to be bought. Love should be romantic, unconditional, happy... and not a commercial product from Walmart.
láska= love, laská = laskat = to pet or to stroke

Actually there is big diference between Láska and Laská which appears at the begining. Láska means Love but laská mean to pet, nurse or hug. :D

Also don't forget, what happens a day before May the first. Yes, burning the witches. Quite a look at both sides of womenhood. One day you burn a witch(or witches have sabbat), the second one you kiss your beloved other side. And/Or treat your hangover from the day before...
Imagine walking near some orchard and your phone suddenly sends you notification about hot single MILFs in your area waiting for you to kiss them.
Top comment here😂😂
St.Valentine's day brings all romantic events, as gangster shooting in Chicago garage or bombing of Emauzy monastery...😂 Every year I'm bit afraid, what is to be the next.
Oh yes, mayday parades, the staple of my childhood🙃dancing or marching in an outfit (either of a "pioneer" or some sports or a folk group) usually not appropriate to the weather (it used to be quite cold or raining). We took part even the year of the Chernobyl disaster - no info, so we happily danced in the streets under the toxic clouds..It is also interesting how Mácha is a symbol of love, the poem Máj is quite dark, and his personal love life would not probably stand the test of the contemporary attitudes towards women😋
But not to grumble - I love the time of the year, all the trees in bloom 🌸enjoy everyone the way you like.
Exactly. The most romantic stories are not "sunny stories". Yes, they are about strong feelings, but they include fear and death also. Máj is in fact a romantic poem about feelings of a man, sentenced to a capital punishment...
Nádherné. Super.
