Palau is an Italian commune in north-eastern Sardinia, in the province of Nord-Est Sardegna. Palau borders the municipalities of Arzachena, La Maddalena, Santa Teresa Gallura and Tempio Pausania.
Above the coast, a panoramic road leads to Capo d'Orso, where "The Bear", a gigantic formation of granite rocks typical of Gallura, watches over the Costa Smeralda.The or Capo d'Orso is a conspicuous headland, a cape the northeast coast of the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia, about three kilometers east of the port city of Palau.
It owes its name, translated "Cape of the Bear", to a prominent rock near the summit, the Punta d'Orso, this promontory of the Sardinian mountain coast. With special forms of weathering - such as wool sack weathering, weathering bark and tafoni - a rock figure was created from the granite here, which is reminiscent of a bear and is visible from afar due to its size and exposed location high above the sea. The Capo d'Orso is considered one of the symbols of the Gallura area and is part of an impressive coastal landscape in the north of the Costa Smeralda. From the top of the cliff, also known as the "rock bear", you can see the La Maddalena archipelago and the neighboring French island of Corsica.
A few kilometers west of downtown Palau, on Mount Altura, is a fortress built in 1889-1891 from locally mined rock. She was part of the defense system around La Maddalena.
