You’re not the only one who’s experiencing this kind of problem in SG. Even in Australia I also encounter these kind of people everywhere - in shopping malls, up an escalator, people walking very slowly in a crowded thoroughfares especially during rush hours…
Not just you, I feel like scolding these people too. Like watching drama is really too much. And I assure you this happens in sydney too, not just singapore
Another point is looking at the phone when boarding/alighting the bus. My area is crowded with people on bikes that likes to dash thru the bus stop and sometimes they don't even slow down when there's people alighting. If you're not careful or attentive, you might clash with them. I've seen many near miss cases.
This should be reclassed as anti-social behaviour equivalent to a traffic violation like stopping in a no stop zone. Being on the phone while walking should carry a fine. Have designated locations like smoking areas where people can get on their phones and scroll to their heart's content.
@@silentmode5573 I have a feeling they would freak out because it's actually falling out of their hands. Imagine if the phone fell and broke apart on the sidewalk or something?? haha. I wonder what they would do.
If a person gets into an accident while using their phone (consuming media or playing or communicating) all distracted I just can't find it in my conscience to have pity or mercy for them. It only takes a second to get into an accident and die, whatever they are doing on their phone it won't kill them to lock their phone and put it in their pockets or bag
At 3:36, most drivers look out for pedestrians. Plus pedestrians are familiar with the roads they take daily. So they develop a false sense of safety and it builds into their minds. Just watch the young lady in black at 3:42.
Person gets knocked down using phone, driver's fault. Person gets horned by driver for not paying attention, also driver's fault. Not worth to end up in a blue tent for that extra 20s of browsing the phone.
Google Pixel has this lookup reminder feature when it detects user walking while using the phone. Very useful for me. 😊 Btw, Steven is using Google Pixel 8 phone 😅
First of all I am bewildered by why do people put the responsibility of their life on the mercy of strangers they don't even know. When you are distracted and don't know where you are going, you are essentially calling out , 'Hey, I am ignorant of where I am going, please help me and look out for me'. But Why? For me I dare take responsibility for my precious life and always look in the eye while walking. So many PMDs and Bicycles zooming around, also on their phones haha.
Thank you for pointing this out! At the end of the day, everyone needs to know that road safety is EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY!! Not just the drivers!! I am also guilty of looking down at my phone while crossing the road, but I always make it a point to lookout for vehicles first before even stepping out onto the road (I should correct this to not looking at my phone AT ALL while crossing). I've seen WAY TOO MANY people walking, dashing, running, riding across pedestrian crossings without slowing down to lookout for vehicles!! This complacent mentality thinking that drivers will automatically stop for you, but the truth is, we can't see or lookout for you 100% of the time. Sometimes, WE LEGIT DON'T SEE YOU!! Hence, nowadays, i don't even step out onto crossings until i see the vehicle actually slowing down or come to a stop. CUZ YOU NEVER KNOW!!! And those kind of crossings at 3:35 are esp dangerous, because sometimes drivers can overlook these kind of traffic lights!! It happened to me 3-4 times already. Luckily nothing happened.
Some walking up and down the stairs also can look at their phone . I saw Some even got pavement don’t walk but walk at the side of the road while using their phone. Some see phone until walk from Left to right then right to left the bicycle behind ring also no use lol .
I learnt it the hard way.. I was looking at my phone and the traffic light turn green but it was for the vehicles to go. My body just auto reacted to the green light. Lucky enough for me that the bus driver was alert and quick to brake his bus. Nowadays, i will put my phone down while crossing. then continue back looking at it once i have done crossing the road.
I think the main reason (at least for me) is that I don't have enough time for myself because of work, family, etc. When walking is really the only "alone time" that I have, that allows me to do my own thing.
Cant stop this addiction lah. Its like telling a smoker or alcoholic of the danger and risk to quit. Walk and watch drama on phone. Eyes glued to phone at pedestrian crossing etc. Ever driving cycling and on bike.
Thanks for raising this topic. It’s becoming a social problem. Not only when crossing roads, but also when using escalators. I have seen multiple times. Where people don’t even where they are stepping off/on to. They are so engross on the phone, they went to the wrong direction.. I secretly wish they fall face flat to learn their lesson. (Shhh🤫🤫)
Japan subways has signs reminding people not to look at their phones. China subways makes announcements ad nausem announcements reminding people not to look at their phones. Singapore can do more.
when i am moving, i dont use my phone. when i am stationary, then i will use my phone. i have only 2 pages of app. none of it are games. i have seen people get hit by cars while on the phone crossing the road. i myself, while riding back home on my honda phantom ta200, was hit by a car and he ran away. why? because that idiot driver was on the phone; and it was all caught on CCTV in the cross junction along yck road. i am quite sure her license was revoked.
Great topic, this needs to stop. People are just bloody zombie with their phones these days. Drives should not be punished for these walking phone zombies' blatant disregard for their own safety.
If you want to prevent collisions, get pedestrians to walk on the right parts of concrete paths, pedestrian-only paths and to stay left, walking in one line so to speak. Not having unintended people on the paths would already reduce risk of collision. Obstructions are also deadly, like leaf litter, water puddles, potholes, sand patches, obstruction of vision, lack of visibility, etc. Even if it doesn't lead to a collision, a person's behaviour can be steered in unpredictable ways that leads to an accident.
They expect you to give way for them while they use mobile and walk at the same time. Should look at MRT train, when train are packed, the way how people hold their mobile...
Habit needs strong enforcement at the beginning to cultivate. This is where strong message and harsh penalty need to work hand in hand. Education will always be there, but the emphasis on just education should be given at the later stage when people have changed their habit. This was what LKY did during his time on spitting and littering. If our founders were to perceive it as difficult to enforce thus relying on education, I can't imagine what will become of present's day Singapore. It is the same as returning the bowls and plates after eating. We have been educating the public for years but to no avail. With just one law on imposing fine on those who don't return, everything changed. Education to the young generations will be important at this stage to ensure the younger generations continue with the good habit. I do hope the government sectors can have more problem solvers with strong moral courage to turn our nation back to a fine nation. No point talking about education at this stage. Chinese wisdom : "kill one and hundreds will be warned".
Very informative video. Action and consequences, etc. But i am bothered by the certain information that is just false. One of them: "The brain does not have infinite capacity".
😮🙏 Many Pedestrians died while walking across Pedestrian Crossing in around the World every year ... Both the Pedestrians & Drivers were found to be Distracted by use of phones or intoxicated by substances like drugs or alcohol! 🙏🕯🌏
Maybe a software lock out when crossing roads or street. Like those carts in the US where it locks up after goes beyond a certain distance to prevent theft. Similar can be done near road junctions etc.
Unfortunately Singapore is a Fine Country so unfortunately fine is good ways like putting traffic enforcer at random places so you never know where you will be fine or use camera since it is not possible to track people since all are in Singpass database
I get more annoyed when people walk slower than me even when I'm on th phone. The problem is not so much being on the phone, it's not looking up every few seconds. I agree that phones will cause some discractions but that can be managed much like having a conversation while driving.
not only handheld, i think having earplugged w music or podcasts is bad. you can hear a car driving near or even cyclist, or people walking behind you.
Not just phone anymore, pedestrians in 2024 even walk with wireless earbuds or even noise cancelling headphone everywhere hopefully it does't cancelled their life eventually!🤨
Sound like this episode is diverting the attention to pedestrians problem when the actual problem is drivers who dash through the traffic lights and zebra crossing.
That why we need to be discipline and not use the phone la simple. The problem with this is cause people's take their own safety for granted like jaywalking also. We just need to be aware of our surroundings.
There was one Vietnames student hit by a train while listening to musicon earphones. The music was so loud, she couldn't hear the train horn. A Chinese girl hit by a truck while on earphones. This should be banned and fine those who using digital device while moving.
Nowadays it's all about the selfish uncultured mentalities of people including foreigners. It's the self entitled mentality that cars "must give way to pedestrians, cyclists if not you bang me lor" that is creating the problems. It's impossible for our country to be as self disciplined and considerate as Japan. During my time in primary school we were taken to this road safety parks to educate us on road manners. 'Look left look right look left again" etc. it felt lame back then but it certainly imparts the information that you are ultimately the one responsible for your own safety. You can behave very safely but you definitely cannot control how others behave. I have seen a young mother cycling across a zebra crossing with speed with her son right behind on another bicycle from a blind spot near Vivo city without even stopping or even slow down to check. What if I hit her AND her son because the son is simply doing what the mother does? There are many pedestrians who always walk slowly even when green man already turn to red. They don't notice it. In town area where there are many filter lanes into building, loads of uncultured people just cross like it's their father's road even where there are no zebra. It's ultimately these rotten mindsets that must warrant some sort of tough fines or penalties else nothing will change. Such as the littering punishment, tray return fines. At first people complain but it does help. Then again it's about enforcement. LTA always play pattern come out with rules but never enforce. They only purposely take photo of cars in bus lanes, go carpark look for ppl never pay parking...etc...all offences that are if no relation to safety. Why don't they enforce on the still existing illegally modified pmds, errant cyclists delivery people who break all sorts of traffic rules?
This is a problem only in sg, everywhere else in the world would get the phone stolen! People are taking advantage that people are too shy to say anything, brain dead people.

Its dangerous. Live a simpler life and not be so engrossed with social media all the time! appreciate the things around you!
