Just another hit piece on bubble tea industry. Some people with vested interests in coffee cafes and colas are just angry their drinks market share is being eaten away. Bubble tea industry has already met the challenge by customising sugar levels. They are just grasping at straws. Many other foods also contain a lot of saturated fats, sugar like soft serve ice cream, iced coffee, fizzy soft drinks, yoghurt with lots of sugary toppings e.g. sprinkles, sugary cereals. If you want to find out how much sugar per 100g, just read their nutritional info on the side of the products.

I love bubble tea but stick to one per month. Every since watching documentaries on sugar my eyes have been opened. Hoping to fully quit eventually. Sugar has the same effect on the body as alcohol, just without the high. So why are we comfortable giving kids these sugary drinks but not alcohol?

Not just bubble tea. It's other bottled drinks as well. Yet the government still slaps on those healthier choice logos even when there's over 2 times recommended sugar intake in one drink.

When I was in secondary school and JC, I always took public transportation home. Usually, I would feel hungry after school and since the weather is always so hot in Singapore, I would buy a cup of iced bubble tea every day (back then there were 'Sweet Talk' stores near MRTs that sold them for $1.5). Also, I needed the sugar to have the energy to do my homework.

I'm surprised at the sweet tooth that the drinkers have. My daily nectar is milk coffee without sugar and I will only eat sweet pastry if I crave it or after eating a nice, savory, umami-type of meal. But to have a sweet bubble tea AND pastry as well just hurts my teeth from sugar overload. I enjoy coffee specifically to balance out the sweetness.

I just realised how bad it is to our environment.
Take Singapore's population of 2020 as an example, if everyone had a cup of bubble tea every week for a year. The country would go thru roughly 304,217,784 plastic cups😱

Not sure if most people still drink bubble tea with 100% sugar. More people usually go for 50 or 30% nowadays (depends on demographics). Also, it would have been better if Steve did not know about the supposed effects of drinking too much bubble tea before he went on the experiment, such as having mood spikes. He might have been affected by what was mentioned to him and became more conscious about it. This might make the experiment seem like a less fair one - a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'.

    I've watched part 1 & 2 now.
I personally found this part 1 more interesting and factual than part 2 👍🏼
    But they're both great!
I believe everything in moderation. 😎
By the way... Sugar is in EVERYTHING now a days... Just start reading the ingredients labels. Even restaurants add it into dishes because it helps bring out the flavor.
And as for caffeine, Americans drink on average 3-cups of coffee a day...
So putting everything into context is helpful.
But I do agree with the (unfortunate) marketing to children and teens... Mcdonald's has been sued numerous times over the years with their amazing marketing to children 🤷🏼‍♀️ But it's all business and profits 🤦🏼‍♀️

The sugar gives the addiction but the branding is what makes them hip. Like they say u don't try ur not in the group. For me I enjoy coffee but I just go to a local cafe tat has a good coffee press and make a fresh brew. I don't need Starbucks. People go there just literally go there to promote the brand and let people know well it's Starbucks.

Of course there's some fancy place that serves coffee to make people think they're on the hype but as people said "why making it complicated when we can make it simple" right? haha. People are litteraly paying for the fanciness. I'm also enjoying it but not like 3-4 times a week.. way too much :O

And thank God it was rarely available here in Penang when i moved here 1996. at least i was able to programmed myself to get rid of it, and now i am proud to say, i just look at it when i passed by the shop as it is available in every corner of the mall.

the comparison to coffee was actually insightful. i don't drink coffee that much because i don't "think" that i need the caffeine. however, i do drink coffee on days where i think i need it. but if bubble tea provides the same amount of coffee... then i should just replace my coffee with bubble tea HAHA.
the only thing i want to mention is this "healthier version of bubble tea" that they mentioned near the end. personally, i think of slushes - like a mango slush - might be the healthier option.

I'm 41 I've seen 2 BBT waves, the first was when it first hit our shores, that's afaik 1998, every other person was trying to open up a bbt store, there was no big names , it's just corner stores.
    And then it died down...
    And recently I think 2010~2015 ?
it came back better and classier, with big names like LIHO gongcha .
Tried it back in the 90s was pretty nice.
    Never touched it since

It isn't that bad if you opt for low sugar option, eg. 25% sugar, that should add up to only about 100 kcal per cup.
That's about 5% of an average daily calorie intake.
