The 2nd act does add a bit too much, and drags it down a bit, I also agree that the 3rd act all but redeems that for me. Over all I think its a solid flick.

This guy really should be cast as John Stewart Green Lantern!! I’ve been fan casting him for years. After seeing his work in this movie and in Krypton, he can definitely morph into the character on screen!
What an absolute gem of a film, Jeremy Saulnier is brilliant, Green Room, Blue Ruin, this should've been called Red Ridge. Btw, Aaron Pierre has to be the pick for John Stewart Green Lantern for the DCU. The entire cast killed in btw.
'Blue Ruin' is one of the BEST films I have seen in the last 30 years. Like 'Bone Tomahawk' it is a slow burn. You have to make the investment. The story is everything. I was SO happy that someone could still make film like this, ' Blue Ruin.' 'Bone Tomahawk' is another conversation. Brilliant stuff and made for NOTHING. I have yet to see this Rebel... But I am expecting, now, something well beyond their budget...
@hugh-johnfleming289 yep, Rebel is another slow burn, but with more action, Blue Ruin really is one of the best, this director is killing it, I will watch anything and everything he makes.
I had never heard of Aaron Pierre before watching this movie but after seeing his performance, I could see him being one of my favorite actors! I also thought AnnaSophia added some charm to the movie and I think the casting was perfect for the role. This movie was really excellent and I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it.
The plot synopsis and opening of the film led me to believe this was a storyline I had seen before. In some ways that still ended up being true, but it was so much better than I ever expected.
This movie deserves an oscar. The level of writing, direction, and acting is on an otherworldly level. The best movie I have watched since Boon Joon Ho's Parasite. The level of realism is also something I have never before seen in an action movies. The main character continues to drive a car after the tyres have been shot! This movie is essentially Rambo but a million times better and more realistic.😱😱😱
One of the better Netflix films for sure! Netflix marketing seems to only work a few months out of the year so hopefully word-of-mouth can do its thing on this one!
Loved it. Brilliant. Unique. A long time ago I became turned off by action movies when everything became John Wick... A bunch of explosions, chases, predictable outcomes, and 95 people being killed in 90 minutes. But this was cool. Captivating characters, somewhat realistic, and if I'm not mistaken... Only one person was killed in the whole 2 hours 11 minutes. Now that's truly unique. Salute. 🫡
Dude, you took the words right out of my mouth. Just rolled credits, went to youtube for reviews, everywhere I went I said Aaron has to be John Stewart.
Austin I definitely have to check this one out because Aaron Pierre is a very talented actor. He was on M Night Shyamalan's film Old and the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King voicing in the title character. Plus you should check them out in Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon hit award-winning Apple TV series The Morning Show.
I really tried to like this film. I think there were sparks off and on, but after the first act, the tone shifted, and in an attempt to be clever, they lost me, and I had to force myself to finish this film. I didn't find myself enjoying more than just enduring the back half of the film. Great review as usual, Austin. Keep up the great work! #GeeSawThat 🤘🏿😀👍🏿
I've loved Aaron Pierre since seeing him in Old as Mid Sized Sedan 🤣I'm so happy he is getting bigger roles where he can really show his chops. Can't wait for him in Mufasa at the end of the year.
Yup, pretty much agreed. The point is, this is no action movie, it has some action, but it's not the focus or the interest of the director. In any case, a nice good time for me.
Its like you read my mind. Everything you said is what i felt. Should have been 30 minutes shorter. And when it shifts gears it kinda lost me. But overall good movie
I dont know why, but the subversion of the Serpico not being Jessica Sims completely threw me off guard... In fact, the whole way they handled race in this movie was phenomenal... Very few of the cops were overtly racist to the point of parody, really showing how police brutality isn't strictly relegated to Black people. Very good subversion of a trope
Movie was great but it’s only flaw was that there was hardly any action in it , I mean in a 2 hour long movie we get 3 short scenes of action and that’s it Hopefully they’ll make a sequel with more action in it
I feel like the second act crawl is a necessary evil; a police force, no matter how small, is no entity someone wants to challenge alone without good reason. Terry's confrontation with the force in the first act matches the level of escalation since Terry still needs to get his cousin out, but after his death, Terry has no reason to continue pushing back. His reason to escalate the confrontation needed to start back up again, hence the attacks on Summer and the small conspiracy theory behind the town.
I'm intrigued that it's not very violent for an action film. Terry Richmond neutralizes his opponents by using tasers, bean bag rounds and jiu-jitsu. I wonder if this film is a turning point in the genre, where gun-play is downplayed in favor of hand to hand combat or non-lethal objects.
I was not expecting anything out of it but boi was I pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be just another biased anti-cop1 film but the scenarios were too realistic.
I’m glad you covered it! Saulnier rules :) wish other YT critics would cover it. I thought it film really deserves the coverage. Make sure to watch “The Underground Railroad” if you haven’t though! Pierre and the series in general are incredible.
It was good but I was expecting the climax to be a bit more action packed because they were hinting at his ability to do so throughout the movie. So, it was a bit of letdown.
this was actually a great movie DON JOHNSON after doing lots of junk this was brilliant ,, i left the movie with getting an emotional ending attached .. with the cop at the end getting on his side .... just brilliant

It was a disappointment, I expected more action, to see the protagonist giving the police what they deserved and it never happened, they knew how to sell the movie with their false promo, and in the end it ends and that's it, I wanted to see if the girl got her son back or not. I hope the actor can be in another movie that is action, I was looking forward to seeing him in action
I disagree that he was a badass that could do whatever he wanted. He felt like he was just desperate to save his cousin and then they just kept pushing him till he finally had enough.
I'm gonna watch Aaron hasnt been in a project that I didn't like. u should watch him in the underground railroad series, and he plays Malcom X in Genius. and he is voicing Mufasa in the Lion King
Don't see all the hype in the comments about it, it was a let down! Aaron Pierre is a good actor definitely, but everything else was all over the place like they didn't know what to do with the film. They were trying too hard, kinda like they do with comedy fails when the jokes are forced so it makes it cringe. All I'm going to say so I don't spoil it for anyone. Expected more is all, and I found myself drifting off through the middle of it.
Nice review...I do not believe Saulnier will ever top BLUE RUIN, BUT,if he did it would not shock me. This was very well done, and though I lean more toward his more Hard R VISCERAL STUFF(*BTW NICE SHOUT OUT TO GREEN ROOM- I saw the Chicago debut and met Saulnier there, a really down tempo and humble, supercool guy)this really delivers a more restrained, yet equally taut, suspense-laden romp through darkness we all know sadly exists. It did drag on at a certain point... however i think everyone is Arnold Swartzenagger'd out with 🩸lust and shootem up bang bang. And they tried to make this action thriller about a morally good dude who has honor even if he has been dishonored. So he used more of his head than just acting out violently... and pretty much in the process he got his mission complete without unaliving anyone. Which has never been done that I've ever seen in an action movie. With that in mind it was executed well.
I really disliked the movie. The characters were all paper thin stereotypes and the movie had no nuance to it. This would be ok if it were a fast paced action movie, but it is not. It wants to be a crime drama, but there is little dramatic about it and it has nothing of worth to say. It felt painfully slow, overlong, ineffective at building tension and at pretty much everything it tried to do. It truly is a poor man's First Blood, centered on a poor man's Reacher that for some reason was "Batmanesque". I would agree that the actor who played the main character did a fantastic job with the nothing burger that his character was. The ending redeems it to a degree, but it felt like too little, way too late.

Black guy in the middle of good ol’ boy country flagrantly breaking the law, cycling in the middle of the road, with headphones on and carrying $30,000 cash to his criminal cousin. Then making the mistake of talking too much and allowing an otherwise unlawful search when he could have simply asked for a lawyer and still bailed out his cousin the following week. Such a dumb premise.
Maybe the police officers shouldn't have acted unlawfully in the first place. but yet you blame the black guy in the scene. Do you think the police would have cared if he had asked for a lawyer anyway?
@@PeskeyStrider2 I'm blaming the writers, not the "black guy" - don't make this a race issue.
