    Hello,
    Just so you know, the hinges are aluminum, not steel. There are many people reporting the bubbling of the paint occurring not only at the hinge area, but along the edges of door panels, the hood, the windshield frame and tailgate skin.
    Aluminum oxidizes, it doesn't rust. The surface of the aluminum releases aluminum oxide which appears as a white powder, and lifts the paint. I believe the issue lies in poor paint/surface prep and priming at the factory. Perhaps the other manufacturers who use aluminum panels have better quality control practices?
    I enjoy your channel's content.
    Cheers

    Having owned an aluminum toy hauler built by a horse trailer manufacturer, when we visited the factory they were applying a 3M barrier tape where aluminum and steel structures joined.

    While I agree don’t take it out on the service mgr. The cost to do it right is justified when spending 40 to 80k on a Jeep. You down playing it by production cost to do it right would be expensive, is crazy to think that way. I’ve had numerous issues and going back again to my local dealership for it happening again on my door not hinges but the actual door and in my windshield. My JL warranty expires in July so I’m taking it back in to get other areas corrected again. So yeah I’m a bit frustrated with a 2018 Jeep JlU that cost 50k is doing this.

    I think you are dismissing them by saying “yeah, it happens”. No it shouldn’t. Not all of us have a spray booth and the know how to go a repaint. The fact is you’re spending a lot of money and to have a vehicle flake and corrode is unacceptable. But jeepers will just accept it as a Jeep thing.
    The dealers are giving people the runaround and it’s just not fair.

    So another option is to put a gasket between the two surfaces. I used to be one of the Mechanical Engineers for Loadrite Boat Trailers and we had to deal with galvanic corrosion all of the time. We had formex gaskets made to go between out hot dip galvanized crossbars and aluminum frames. It's important to keep them clean so no catalyst can get between the surfaces and speed up the reaction

      Zinc=Sacrificial metal?
      Sounds like what we do on boats.
      Put less noble sacrificial anodes on aluminum and stainless parts to minimize corrosion of the other parts.
      Magnesium anodes are used in Fresh water only, Aluminum anodes are used in salt or brackish water.
      Replace whenever they are 50% disintegrated.
      So: draw your own conclusions as to whether this will work.
      In plumbing, if you join Copper to galvanized pipe without a galvonic break: fitting with plastic washer, the Copper will corrode for many feet after the joint.
      This happened in my house.
      Galvanic corrosion combined with seam sealer that failed, especially on thinly painted edges, could be reason for other areas of bubbling.

    • @loubonaparte5063
      @loubonaparte5063 Год назад +3

      My concern there is the Zinc will become sacrificial and need replacement, though easy enough to do as a boater I do it annually...

    I don't know about not bashing them, they produced a product, found out about all the problem, (which was tbh inevitable) and didn't fix it. Now with the lawsuits they have extended the coverage but are making it very difficult for owners to actually get their vehicles repaired,.. personally ive been waiting almost 2 months now to hear back from a dealership about getting all the bubbles fixed (again) on a 62,000$ vehicle thats not even 3 years old. Also it's not just the hinges as some commenters have mentioned. My hood tells a different story.

    I greatly appreciate your videos and your advice. In my opinion, you have the best advice on RUclips about Jeep Wranglers. This bi-metal corrosion problem was a major issue with the old Land Rover "Series" vehicles (Series I, II, IIA & III). I owned a number of them between 1964 and 1993. Rust and corrosion were never major issues on any of my Land Rovers while I owned them, but I washed all of them frequently and washed them every week in winter months (living in Montana and northern Utah), and washed them frequently after driving in salt water while living in San Diego. My Jeep 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon has done well, even though this Jeep has resided with me since early 2017 when I shipped it from Utah to the Island of Molokai. My major advice is to rinse off and wash your Jeeps (and Land Rover products) frequently. The more CARE you give to your vehicle, either Jeep or Land Rover product, the fewer the problems you'll have with it. Thank you for your great advice! Andrew "Andy" McKane IV, 23 June 2024, Maunaloa, Molokai, Hawaii.

    FYI this not only happens along the hinges but where the aluminum panel folds over on to the inner structure as well. Had my 2018 JL HellaYella fixed recently at Flemington Jeep Chrysler. They had to do both door and hood edges plus the hinges. Very frustrating! For Jeep to keep doing it is an exercise in futility and takes advantage of their loyal customer base. It would be interesting to know how much they have spent to make the repairs under warranty. My guess is pennies since they will not fix the problem at the factory level. I do not know how much the factory is making off the Wrangler, but I am sure they are factoring in the cost for flaws like this to cover their losses. Love the channel Matt, keep up the good work!

      @@dustingibson2407 I tend to agree this problem lies in something well beyond simple galvanic corrosion... Door edges only bubbling screams a breakdown in the process other than just dissimilar metal corrosion. Ferrous particles (think fish eyes/latex etc) floating around and one hasty wipe has my vote in SOME cases here.

They were very accepting of the issue and told me that they are no longer doing “repairs” at the shop because the issue could not completely be solved with body work and paint. I was told that there was an issue with the actual metal and therefore they are completely replacing the doors/hinges. I don’t know if this is just what this dealership is doing, but they were very knowledgeable about it. Only downside is there was about a six month waiting period for parts, but I am on the list. Probably also important to note that I’m having the issue on the hood hinges as well.

    Hey Matt, thanks for the video. Sorry if this is not a relevant comment but I was wondering if you could do a video on the defrost issue many of the JL’s have? My 2021 JL has a defrost that only blows through the center 6-8 vents and does not blow out at all through the 50 other vents! No air comes from defrost on driver or passenger side. My understanding is that it’s a hit or miss thing that happens in production and that not all JL’s have the issue. I saw a recent video of 2022 Gladiator driving in blizzard conditions and the defrost issue prevented him from seeing out his windshield while driving. It was caked in ice! I found a star publication but when I contacted Jeep and several dealerships; they would not address the issue. I actually cracked my windshield right down the center because I ran the defrost so hot; bc it’s not evenly dispersed through the windshield. I also hear the 4xe ‘s are going through it too when they auto start their Jeep in the morning on a cold weather day and let it sit running for a period of time… cracked windshield!!

    I think if you’re paying 40-60k for a Jeep.. this shouldn’t be a perpetual issue. I have it all over my JL, and since I’m right outside the warranty period they pretty much told me I’m out of luck. Which sucks because I didn’t even notice it until recently, and it’s getting worse rapidly.
    I’ve also read some people have gotten this fixed 3 times just to have it happen again, and then they’re out of warranty.. So I don’t know if it would have made a difference getting it reported seeing as it prob would have reappeared.
    This is bs. Jeep should fix it, no matter the warranty because it’s a factory issue. It should be a recall. My last Jeep had a factory defect where casting sand from the factory was clogging my heater core leaving me with no heat in the winter on the passenger side. I’d have the lines blown out just to have them clog with sand again within months.
    Of course there was no recall or way to fix it without paying thousands.. so I traded it in for my current Jeep. My new JL runs great but now I have paint issues 😂
    What do you do if you love Jeep, but their constant manufacturing f’ups just keep happening?
    I’ve put up with it for 10yrs because I just love jeeps. But it would be nice if they got their shit together.

    My local dealership, Freedom Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep in Lexington, KY took care of this for me by reaching out to Jeep on my behalf. Jeep responded by REPLACING three doors (driver & passenger front, and driver rear), the tailgate hinges, and fixed a spot on the edge of my hood. I was extra tic that Jeep was replacing the doors. After getting it back from the body shop, I drove it for a couple weeks before it got really cold here. Then noticed I was getting a lot of air leaking into the cabin. Turns out, the replacement doors are missing the “weld” or “epoxy” seal around the channel that holds the weatherstrip to the door. So even with the weatherstrip in place the air just comes in from behind the channel that holds it onto the door. I took it back to the dealer, they reached out to Jeep and Jeeps says “that’s how the doors are made, there is nothing wrong with them.” So the dealer says there is nothing they can do. I asked them to show me a newer Jeep and asked, “if that is how the doors are currently made, then why isn’t it that way on any of the new Jeeps?” Silence. So I have had to tape around the door to cover the gap between the door and the channel that holds on the weather strip to keep the air out/in. It still leaks air. I still get mad about this when I talk about it. My 2018 JLUR has to be taped up to keep the air out! Of course, that also means no deep water crossings either!

    I used to live on the East Coast and drove a 2021 Wrangler 4-door to work and running around. My door hinges, hood hinges and tailgate hinges all started to corrode. The salt used on the roads I believe just gave this rust a head start. Jeep should start to use steel for hoods, door panels, tailgate panels this should stop the corrosion. My under carriage was rusted every where. I live in California now and drive a Ford Bronco Wildtrac, and love it. Jeep corrects the corrosion I will buy another Wrangler.

My dealer, Bettenhausen Automotive in Illinois, was very familiar with the issue and did an excellent job fixing the issue. I’m thankful that everything went smoothly but, my rep has already told me that Wranglers come in multiple times with the same issue so the body shop isn’t a permanent fix. For those experiencing a dealership refusing to deal with this, even under warranty, it's because Jeep does not pay the total cost to repair most of the time. When we sublet it to a bodyshop most will charge more then what Chrysler is going to pay for the repair, causing the dealer to eat the difference. At my dealership paint costs has gotten to a point where if you didn't buy it from us we're not going through the massive headache that is subletting and getting the claim paid. I'd suggest you take it to your selling dealer if possible for a higher chance of it getting fixed. Some dealerships may also have an in-house bodyshop so the sublet isn't an issue.

Many people won’t keep their Jeep long enough to care about corroding hinges. Those that do, can add the cost to their Jeep at dealer and have it under warranty. Currently the only option is to try and find a good enough paint and body shop and pay for it out of pocket and hope they stand behind their work. Was it an oversight on Jeep? Absolutely.
