Yeah, I always expected more hits from the Motels after this and Suddenly Last Summer. I don't feel their later music captured my fancy like these two tunes did.
Martha & Marty are still gigging. it's because they can.how f**king cool is that?!!I've seen the Motels twice in the 80's. bucket list: see Martha again before i buy the farm.
I just have to say that the last, "Only the lone-ly," is one of my favorite sung lines in all of music. I loved it when I first heard it, and I still love it to this day. Gets me every time...
Fun Fact: Martha Davis played one of the Three Most Important People in the World, along with Clarence Clemons (E Street Band) and Fee Waybill (The Tubes), in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
IMO there isn't a female vocalist today that has anything on Martha Davis. So much emotion in this. If you want more, check out "Suddenly Last Summer", and "Remember the Nights"
@@writerjohnmcnally Not much into movies, guessing it must have been a while back....given how old this song is. but yeah how can you not like that sax, volume goes full blast everytime!
vid was directed by Russell Mulcahy, a fellow Aussie ( and I too was a film director for 25yrs).. he did most of the Duran Duran clips amongst others, he was a superstar of videos when it all began for MTV.
The Motels and lead singer Martha Davis were awesome and are still on my playlist. Check out “Take the L” and “Suddenly last Summer” for two of their bigger songs. Martha has such a sultry and smooth vibe to her voice. Can you tell I’m a long time fan?
This is one of my all-time favorite songs from the 80s. I didn't hear it often, but I used to savor it every time it came on the radio. The opening bars were what got me. I didn't understand what the song was about. I thought it was about a married person having an affair, but it couldn't be sustained (of course). I finally saw a short doc. on The Motels that was done in the style of "Behind The Music" with Martha Davis, and she explained this song. It came out of a romantic relationship she had with a member of the band, and about how they couldn't sustain the relationship, because of the busy-ness of touring. That's why the lyric goes, "Only the lonely can play."
My band The Wag opened for The Motels at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park in 2019. Martha could not have been a sweeter person. She even came out front during our soundcheck & danced while we played. Absolutely a highlight of our career. And she can SING, too!! 🎼
though i never realised it at the time, russell mulcahy directed this video and also "gypsy" by fleetwood mac. i always thought they were similar in feel, mood, theme, setting - although "gypsy" cost WAY more to make lol. i have always LOVED both songs. martha davis is TREMENDOUS and "only the lonely" is their jewel. it never fails to make me sing out loud and cry while doing it ❤
Other cool 80's woman led bands: Scandal ("The Warrior", "Goodbye To You" and their Journey's cover of "Only The Young"), Quarterflash ("Harden My Heart", "Take Another Picture"), Yazoo ("Don't Go", "Situatuion" and the sublime "Only You")
Another great one from the 80's is "Space Age Love Song" by A Flock of Seagulls. It's got an amazing guitar riff, the type that will be playing in the back of your mind for the next 3 weeks after hearing it!
Jamel I wholeheartedly second this recommendation! “Space Age Love Song” will stay with you long after you hear it, especially the legendary sonic guitar riffs belted out by a teenaged Paul Reynolds!
One of my favorite songs! Exquisite! Martha Davis’ emotion in the song is moving! You should react to Martha Davis’ version of Take My Breath Away. She was asked to sing it before Berlin and they chose Berlin’s version for Top Gun, but Martha’s is good too. Just different.
This song is so sad to me. It speak to someone who is in an empty relationship, in an empty life, and while she says to others ‘you knew this was a game for the lonely’, she really longs for connection. Martha’s vocals are stunning. One of my favorite songs.
The sax on this track is incredible! You were so funny when you said you thought it was a black group from Motown lol. I thought the same thing as a teenager with that title. I had to chuckle at your intro. I'm Canadian and grew up listening to music by The Police, Bryan Adams, Bob Rock from The Payolas, Pat Benetar, The Motels and lots of Jazz and Blues music as I also sang. I too was a child actor doing American Television. I love your channel. Keep up the great work!
"i'd rather be wealthy".. well said Jamel.."Only the Lonely" was one of the first MTV videos.Martha Davis & the Motels really helped MTV to get started..and it's a beautiful song too, we've covered it,people love it!
"I wish there was more." Perfect for the song, tho, innit? That's loneliness. "I wish there was more." Sublime. LIsten if you want smoking sax check out Rindy Ross from Quarterflash, contemporary to The Motels. Harden My Heart, Find Another Fool, The Night Shift, The Right Kind of Love. Damn, this takes me back. Lonely nights as a teenager listening to this on the radio.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver SORRY! Too many good ones to list them all. Should just have a Motels day and do their all their recordings 😆 I just rewatched the VH1 Bands Reunited episode that featured them and really enjoyed it.
Martha Davis & The Motels are nothing but a Class Act! Listen to their other Hit "Suddenly, Last Summer" too. As for what she was wearing in the Video I think it had more to do with evoking a 1920s/1930s Hollywood Film Noir ambiance.
One of the most sophisticated well crafted songs of the 80s I feel. And I agree there should had been more wax, but what little there was is very effective
Martha was and still is a great song writer.. She had a rough life in her younger days which shows in some of her songs.. My good friend Marty on sax! Back in the early 70's Martha was friends with and used to jam with Eddie Money in Berkeley, CA before he WAS Eddie Money.. Those were the good ol' days on Grove Street.
Just a great great band! Another band fronted by a girl who also plays the 🎷 Saxophone. Dude,QUARTERFLASH" FIND ANOTHER" take note of the 🎸 guitar/Saxophone 🎷 back m forth towards the end! #TRUST🎶🎼🎶🎼
The Motels and Martha Davis - unknown to some, they were huge in Australia and Martha toured there before Covid. One great voice and many moody silky pop songs - Total Control, Take the L and more
This is one of my favorite groups from the eighties. I was out on the Dance floor a lot when I was younger. I am a guy who learned at a very young age that if you wanted to meet and date a lot of girls and later women, you better learn how to dance and listen. I was good at both.
It's about time! Told you about the Motels way back last year. She still has a very dynamic voice. Saw her at the tiniest venue called The Tin Angel in Philly - 2015. There was a meet and greet. I saw the GM of the major radio network get tongue tied meeting her. I got her autograph on a CD and then she kissed me (song hint). Oh, and she likes red wine. Hit up Little Robbers-great tune. Tragic Surf-even better.
Here's a great one for you.... the stereo version of WILD HONEY, the title track from the Beach Boys' late 1967 album of the same name. The entire album was their tribute to Stevie Wonder! They loved the Motown Sound from the get-go, and despite abysmal record sales at the time, WILD HONEY was a nice taste of The Beach Boy's early R&B roots. I personally love the part where the group harmonizes the lyric SWEETER, letting their doo-wop roots show, as well!
Great channel man. It's my first comment here. One of my favorites by the motels is "Counting". It's off their debut album. It's one that wasn't a hit or single but I think it's one of their best. I remember me and my dad many years ago bought a huge vinyl collection for super cheap. A lot of the album's were water damaged but most still played. It took us a whole evening to go through em all and that's where I discovered The Motels. Still cool to think back how we use to discover new bands and artists simply by circumstance like that. Anyways, they're a great classic band and one of the best of their time that's quite overlooked.
I get why you thought it was an old Motown Group☺ Great song- I was in my 20's when this came out, Great Song! Vocals, drums , guitar, lyrics, and sax.

That's my favorite by this band!
Yes listen that one!!!!

Martha Davis was a great singer. She should have had an even better career.
Not was, IS
Yeah, I always expected more hits from the Motels after this and Suddenly Last Summer. I don't feel their later music captured my fancy like these two tunes did.
Umm, she's still alive.
You know they're still playing together
Great songwriter, too!
Martha is 70 now. She still sounds and looks great!
Martha & Marty are still gigging. it's because they can.how f**king cool is that?!!I've seen the Motels twice in the 80's. bucket list: see Martha again before i buy the farm.

'...can play'.
A tremendously underrated singer...played this cassette to death. Good from beginning to end.
You are correct. I also wore out my cassette. Favorite song is Tragic surf.
Fun Fact: Martha Davis played one of the Three Most Important People in the World, along with Clarence Clemons (E Street Band) and Fee Waybill (The Tubes), in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Excellent!!
Party on dudes!
Saw The Motels twice in San Francisco in the 80s. First time, opening for The Cars. Martha had a beautiful voice.
IMO there isn't a female vocalist today that has anything on Martha Davis. So much emotion in this. If you want more, check out "Suddenly Last Summer", and "Remember the Nights"
Martha Davis has the most sultry, intelligent voice ever recorded. I miss this being on the radio all the time.
....and I’ll add my vote for Suddenly Last Summer. She tells a story with every note.
The full package
If I thought long and hard enough, I could probably find someone to suggest that's better. But I don't want to put that much time and effort into it.
"Total Control" one of my all time favourite songs and all time favourite sax solos
I just wrote the same thing before seeing your comment. 😁 The song appears in the movie “Something Wild,” too.
@@writerjohnmcnally Not much into movies, guessing it must have been a while back....given how old this song is. but yeah how can you not like that sax, volume goes full blast everytime!

Love your reaction when she hit the high note Jamel! Thanks brother, great song. Yes, more sax!
One of my all time favorite bands ever. Try "take the l" (out of lover & it's over)
This is one of my favorite songs, and used to be a big presence on so many mixtapes.
The Motels are great. They have so many great songs to check out.
I love that Very Early Eighties sound. It lasted maybe two years and was gone.
The Motels and lead singer Martha Davis were awesome and are still on my playlist. Check out “Take the L” and “Suddenly last Summer” for two of their bigger songs. Martha has such a sultry and smooth vibe to her voice. Can you tell I’m a long time fan?
One well-placed sax can turn an already great song up to 11! One of my favorite '80s ballads.
True! I think that I probably listened to Maneater just to hear the sax solo.
@@anonbutanon "Catch My Fall"

Thanks for the reaction. That's what makes a great pop song - leaving you wanting "a little bit more."
She was doing Amy Winehouse before Amy was even born.
A Top 5 song for me. Came out when I was little but I was obsessed with it. Must have driven my mother crazy.
Mama hasn't been sleepin' well at all ... As she lies stretched out in the hall
Classic 80’s song. So glad I was a teenager in the 80’s the music was just fantastic!
Wow, haven't heard this song for years. So good! Suddenly next summer is another great song.
I'm a serious Metal Head but whenever I hear this song it stops me in my tracks, and I go back in time a bit. such a classy dame!

I love her voice, it is a silky/sensuous mash-up of Stevie Nicks, Laura Brannigan and Bonnie Tyler. This song was one of my late brothers favorites...
Reminds me of Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders, but about a half octave higher.
Other cool 80's woman led bands: Scandal ("The Warrior", "Goodbye To You" and their Journey's cover of "Only The Young"), Quarterflash ("Harden My Heart", "Take Another Picture"), Yazoo ("Don't Go", "Situatuion" and the sublime "Only You")
Yazoo!! Love love love them.
My first concert was the Cars in 1980 - The Motels were the opening band.
Saw the Cars at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center 1980 and they were bad live.
@@todallard8791 I saw them a couple times. They weren't bad, but they're really not 'showmen'.
"Suddenly, Last Summer" is another great song by this very powerful 80's artist Martha Davis

I loved this song when it came out, I was in middle school. I heard it in the grocery store the other day, and I was in 8th grade again..

The Motels! I still have their original vinyl LPs from back in the day.
