Recently got kettle bell grips for the dumbbells we're using for our farmer's carry. They help a lot, much easier to grip and shortens the distance I have to squat to pick them up. Just for what it's wortj 😅 (I'm 63, have at least 4 vertebral fractures (stable,) babied my back for a long time but now know I can't. Currently carrying about 65 pounds total, half my body weight, started at around 40 pounds. Hasn't done any harm, surely has made me stronger.)
Thanks, Ed! Adding Farmer's Walk to my workout regimen. Truly appreciate all your videos especially the ones related to osteoporosis.....recently diagnosed and changing aspects of my workouts and daily movements (no more spinal flexion or extreme twisting).
Nice! Just remember to add more weight as you get stronger or increase the length of walking, it’s a great exercise. I try to do it to three times a week myself.
Is this safe to do if you have severe osteoporosis and had 2 fractures in the spine? I know it’s OK to walk, but not sure about holding the weights while walking. I’m 78
Love this! Adding now. Is this daily? Or do you need a day off between, like wrights? Does it matter how heavy the weight? I have 10 lb dumbbells that seem too easy. But I’m starting with these. Happy to have more to add to my exercises..I love change. Thank you!!!
Hi Ed, thank you for this video. What do you think about walking with a heavy backpack. People call it rucking. In your opinion, is it as beneficial as a farmer's walk?
Hey Tim, great question rucking is also a great exercise. It just works a little bit differently than farmers. The thing that I like about farmers is that you’re really working on grip strength, whereas with rucking the grip strength is not involved. So ideally, you are incorporating both into your fitness routine👍🏻
Yes, great question! Get clearance from your doctor on what is a safe weight for you to carry based on your bone density and current risk of compression fracture at L1
That's roughly 35.27 pounds. Kilogram to pound converters are readily available online. I'd say that should be a challenging enough weight to begin with.@@michaelshanahan4965
Question 1, how would you respond to farmers up steps? Too dangerous maybe? Question 2, how would you respond to a yoke carry? Strongman Jon Paul Sigmarson as a boy carried water pails two at a time with a frame with straps to load the shoulders like a yoke.
Great questions, but it really depends on your age, fitness level, experience with weight training, etc. But both would be good additions if appropriate as they are functional lifts.
Hello Dianne, imagine carrying a couple of heavy suitcases for a specific distance. The idea is to use enough weight or increase the amount of steps so you feel a bit of “muscle strain” then rest and repeat it 3-4 times. Over time, carrying the load will get easier meaning you are becoming stronger. Does this help?
@@FrontRowwithEd Let's see your garden and some good dual benefit gardening exercises? Decent video idea. I've been doing backwards garden cart pulls instead of sled pulls for my knees

Excellent Marion!
I'm using 2x25 pound plates, and I'm walking my trail behind my house. On day 3. Takes about 3 minutes one way.

Love this & doable! Starting today! Thanks!
Excellent, let me know how it goes 😎

I would think so. Any weight that's challenging for you and you can maintain your balance while carrying it should work.
Love this! Adding now.

Yes, I love Farmers also! You can do them daily if you are using 10 lbs. Good luck!

Do you recommend a modification or a weight limit on this exercise for a 74 year old who is at risk of a compression fracture on L1?

This build more musulce such as upper traps ? And i'm doing farmar walk with 16 kg both side is that good ?
What’s 16 kg? This is America.

Doing 41 pounds each side back n forth per day wanna see what happens I’m 165 I feel it in my traps first day felt like my body was hit by a truck

I do farmers carry with 20kg plate in each hand for 2 minutes, next time I will try it on stairs.
that's excellent, keep it up! @@eatmeatandliftweights5754
I’ve been doing this every evening with two ten pound weights for 2-3 minutes but I was worried if it’s okay to do daily 😮
If you are not getting sore, I would think it's fine to do daily!
I have a weighted jacket so I will include it every day.
Sounds good Leanne!
I don't quite understand how this would help me. Walking 150 steps with a 10 lb weight. Could you explain to me again?

Water the garden with watering cans
Yes, that works!

Those look to be half gallons.
