I find that there are people who are fountains of knowledge and expertise, and there are people who are excellent at communicating/explaining things. And the Venn diagram of those two sets of people has a microscopic overlap. In regard to DVC - Jen, YOU ARE THE OVERLAP.
I’ve worked so hard saving up for a down payment for a house. Sometimes in the middle of the night I think “I could buy DVC with this money instead!” I blame Jen and these videos for this kind of thinking. 😂
So glad they took your points out of holding. It is really the right thing to do, especially if they don’t want to encourage people coming sick to Disney.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this incredible information. We just had to cancel a trip on Thursday due to my wife and I testing positive for Covid and they put the points in holding. Was going to be near impossible to find something within the 60 day mark. Because of you I emailed them, explained the situation and asked nicely to please put our points back. They kindly did!!! Thank you, you are our points guardian angel!!
I love your channel. You're the only DVC owner I've seen who actually talks about the downsides, everyone else acts like it's the best thing in the world. As you said, it's not the right choice for everyone! I looked into it and could not make the cost and reduced flexibility work for my circumstances.
We have points in Holding because we had to cut our vacation short when mom went into hospice. Now, after watching this, I have points in Holding AND anxiety.
This was super helpful and very good to know they do make some exceptions. With Covid or just other huge emergencies, it’s nice to know you might not have your points stuck in holding. But it’s very helpful to fully understand how it all works.
U.K. members are in a kind of similar situation regarding holding points. They allowed points to be double banked but had to be used by end of May 22 and you don’t get them until your use year starts. So Jan use year only get a few months. Feb even less etc It’s great they helped but it’s also hard to sort out such a short time frame trip from UK
Your getting some love in the comments of the TimTracker channel today. They did a Q&A on their recent trip to Aulani (sp?). They’re considering DVC, and someone in the comments mentioned your channel for DVC information. Many have liked the comment and several have made our own comments agreeing.
You're not alone!! A lot of members have told me they didn't understand it and honestly I understood "in theory" but it worked even differently than I thought!
I’m going to Aulani in two weeks in a ocean view studio 7 nights was 1950.00. Only problem is we booked it Tuesday purchased air yesterday. We will probably look at DVC once we move to FL this year.
Oh good, glad you didn’t lose the points! I don’t know what it is about use year but it hurts my brain if I think about it too much. 😂 Love the sweater and you look gorgeous!
I’ve never even thought to ask this question about DVC. HOW have I never thought to ask this question?? Such an informative video, Jen! And it’s always helpful that you draw off personal experiences. It really puts all the concepts into focus.
Like everyone else, I love your sweater! Glad they made an exception for you and moved your points. Covid should be a real reason to make exceptions without any push back. Afterall, Disney doesn't want you there if you have it!
Thanks for posting! I think we were tangentially aware of holding points, but thanks for the great explanation. Our use year is also December, and after finally getting our heads wrapped around it, we love it. We typically book low point weeks so January, early September and early December is when we head home to Disney.
I love the updated background (esp the ballet shoes) thank you fortalking about this topic, it is definitely one that is not discussed at the DVC tours!
And I hope a lot of DVC owners know that in the worst case scenario they can rent their points out to regular Joes like me-I love that I have that option when the regular Disney world site doesn't have a lot of reservation options.
Just got our offer accepted! Now it is time to wait. Pretty sure we will make it past ROFR since no Poly contracts were bought in November and it’s a small contract and this fairly high per point total but I guess you never can be sure. Got a great deal because half the points were borrowed from 2022 already so it will be almost 2 years before we can enjoy the full points. But that’s fine with us. Then I hope to pick up a direct Riv contract but that won’t be for a while. Thanks for all your help, info and advice!
Holding is a bad word around here. My husband has health issues that like to always rear it’s head a month or so before every Disney trip, so I often tell him 30 days out to take care of himself because I am not above going on a trip alone. Lol. Also he wanted to pass on he misses having Kermit peeking out in your background. As for the video I don’t think he ever got what I was saying when I told him about not wanting to ever cancel inside 30 days. (Obviously I am the planner) Now he does. Thanks!
Dean, I'm amazed in my conversations in the comments how many people don't even know what they are! With Scott's job is something I've had to be painfully aware of as well. And always happy to explain and Kermit drank too much last night so he was recovering, You'll see him next time.
I would definitely call but I think the rule is day 31. But with it only being one day that feels like maybe you could get an exception? You'd have to look at the actual wording because I'm not 100% sure, to be honest. It may be worded "30 days or less"
Question.. with use year Dec and you take Jan vacation, did you book that Jan vacation right after receiving your Dec points? So you only had about a month before your vacation. Thank you.
I really should have cancelled. We had to cancel last minute for a one night stay in Hilton Head and I didn't even bother to cancel. Holding points would have been better than to waste them. Lessons learned.
This is super helpful, Jen. Were the points you had to cancel from your 2021 UY or had they been banked? Any idea if there’s a difference in how that’s handled?
What about using the points elsewhere? I know it isn’t ideal, but can you use holding points for the RCI exchange? Or do they have to be use at a DVC resort?
@@JenLefforge thank you@ we are still waiting for our banked points from the loaded resale contract we purchased to hit our account (we are over 2 months from start of the resale process) so I just booked a May trip with our direct points. I want to use our resale banked points when they finally show up in the account, so I will want to modify the reservation. I was just so happy to see our nights pop up available today? I just booked it fast! Thanks for the help!
@@JenLefforge, thank you so much for the info and for taking the time replying to my comment. I really appreciate you. I asked God for a sign on whether I should cancel or not and you posted this video and I think this is the sign 🥰. Sooo love your channel.
Hello! I’m not sure if you’ve addressed this in a different video, but I’m super confused about how you budget points. For instance, if I had 100 points per year and wanted to bank and borrow to do one big trip every 3 years, how do you get the numbers right? Like I’m guessing what you want won’t be exactly 300 points, so do you inevitably lose a few points every time?
It's a great question and there's no easy answer ESPECIALLY since the points charts change every year (not the total points just which times of year require what amount of points). In an ideal world, you've allocated all the points you need to reservations and can bank what's left over for the following year. I'm sure there's some way to get it just right but if there is, I don't know the trick!
I don't rent out my points ever so I don't know - I would think it would be very difficult as people would have to be able to use them and again, 60 days prior there is very little inventory available?
@@JenLefforge agreed, I would imagine it would be difficult within the 60 day window to find ANY inventory. I just wonder if the 60 day window still applies when renting them out. I assume it does....

Not strange at all and thank you for noticing!

I have an idea: how about using the points up as snack credits? ;). You could buy caseloads of rice krispy treats. J/k.
LOL (Narrator: Chris was mixing up the dining plan with Disney Vacation Club which indicates he may have skipped lunch)
Thank you for the information, we were able to get an exception and have our points taken out of holding.

Thank you! Very good to know. We have had our points for 10 years and have never run into this problem so I was unaware.

True but at 60 days out from your trip, there's also very little in DVC inventory so would be difficult (if not impossible) to do.

YES if you cancel at 31 days or more, there's no penalty and they go back into your account.
