That was very helpful Gary. Can you explain the reason for grafting. What is the preferred root stock for limes and lemons. Is that root stock geared for ground or container growing. How will my seed grown Meyer lemons compare to grafted trees?

I read that pruning should be done about one eighth inch to a quarter inch above the leaf so the dormant bud just above the leaf will be encouraged to grow. Also depending on the side the dormant bud is determines the direction the new growth will take. Has that been your experience? I have a small key lime tree that I grew from a seed from my mother's key lime in Puerto Rico. I have babied the tree and it is now about five feet tall in a large container. I just noticed a couple of weeks ago that the tree is growing flowers. Unfortunately it gets down in the 20's here in north Florida so I have it on a small mover's cart so I can wheel it out to get sun when it is warm enough and wheel back in to protect it when the temperature is going to drop. I am not planning to trim it while it is flowering. I friend tried doing that with her lime tree and it caused it drop all the flowers and the few fruits it was producing. Can the small limbs growing low on the trunk be pruned now while its flowering safely?

Hi Gary. I am new to growing my Lime tree and have successfully not killed it for a solid year. Coming into the spring now and curious as to how to make it more bushy? Mine has a straight up shoot and then like 6 coming off the main trunk but I'd like to get more coming off there. I was waiting to prune for the spring but it seems its already flowered and is starting to grow limes. Will I kill the entire season's yield by pruning now? I already had a lemon tree die so I don't want to lose this one too as the limes were fantastic last year

The mentioned difference between prune apple and citrus is true only for remontant citrus species.
Also shaded citrus fruits do not color well and do not ripen.
For sour-fruited varieties, it "probably" doesn't matter at all, but for orange, tangerine and grapefruit the difference is obvioust! Therefore it is good to have light in the crown as in the mentioned apple tree if citrus have tree trunk! In the shrub system it would be different.
How come I don't see any thorns ? Do you take them off ?
Over area temperatures 0 to 50 f good production of citrus.

Temperatures can get down to 5-10 degrees F in you zone. If the tree is not protected, those temps are low enough to kill it.
use those leaves in curry!!
