    1961 XLCH Ironhead R&R #198 Motor Rebuild Overhaul Harley Sportster
    complete teardown inspection rebuild reassembly install and get running.
    this sportster bobber only had 175 miles on its rebuilt motor before it needed to be fix correctly.
    I built the bike earlier in the year so it was up to me to fix it now.
    see it as I go and don't miss the fun.

    Why do so many guys kick these old bikes over standing off to the side? Wouldnt you get more leverage and put more umph into it by straddling it?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  4 года назад +4

      no, not even close. if you don't have a big ass you have to use all of your leg strength with the momentum of your whole body weight coming down on the kicker. i was kicking over 98ci stroker motors when i was only 110lbs. 120lbs was alot better but that came later on. when you are 200+ you don't have to do all of this. just stand onto the lever.

The best one I've ever seen for small guys starting a bike was the guy who would swing his left leg high in the air and come down with both legs at the same time.

    • @mr1rapid
      @mr1rapid 8 лет назад

      +Max Lee I know you asked Tatro about SU carbs. I have some experience I would like to share. I tried four or five on a Sportster years ago with varying results. The best was an old SU off a Triumph Spitfire. I made a fiberglass mount block similar to the block used for the tillotson and bendix, made thick enough to get the top bell clear of the tank. Bolted it on and the engine started first kick ( on a Sport with points). shut it off and again first kick, again, again....... if the gas was on always. There were two small problems: 1) running on the freeway I had to richen the mixture about 1/2 turn (knob on the bottom). That was a minor issue but easy to live with. 2) The SU carb is tall so it won't fit under the tank without modification to the tank. I made a four gallon fiberglass tank that hid the SU. I ended selling the setup to a very happy chopper builder. I had good luck with others but was always impressed with that first one. The trick is the float level. There are other cv carbs that will probably but most are tall and in the way. My preference is the Tillotson but after all these years you have to rebuild and some parts are sometimes hard to find. Also make sure the fuel filter (if you use one) flows freely. My most recent headache took longer to diagnose than I want to admit. On my 67 XLH would start run/idle perfectly........for a while. Then wind down. If I could pull the choke it would again run for a while. I traced the problem to a newly installed clear plastic filter that traps air and won't flow on its own. I removed it and cured my headache. I was about to the point of burning that bike. Hang in there.

    Just curious, Wouldn't it be better to kick it with your other leg over the bike? Like a dirtbike? Why from the side?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  7 лет назад +5

      because unlike a dirt bike it takes alot of ass to kick a harley. when you are over the bike you can only use your body weight to push the kicker down. when you are on the side of the bike you can use you body weight multiplied by the momentum of your butt dropping to add extra force to the kicker thru the angle of your knee. you need very strong leg muscles to take advantage of all this extra force. watch how i kick and how i tell him to kick. it works with either leg if you are strong enough. i was kicking over big harley stroker motors when i was a kid that only weighted about 110 pounds.

      if you didn't weight 200+ pounds you would have know that you get more kicking force when you use your whole body, not just some of it like when you are over the bike. i will out kick you every time if you do what i say instead of muddling your way thru it. don't forget to pay attention to what the bike wants. its not just spinning it that makes it start.

    • @JKDROB
      @JKDROB 9 лет назад +4

      ckelley63 Mags are awesome. The faster they go the more spark they make. They are vintage racing ignitions.
      Just because something is older doesn't mean it is bad.

    • @mr1rapid
      @mr1rapid 9 лет назад +5

      ckelley63 Not many "better" ignition systems work without a battery. A good mag set correctly works great. An improvement is to replace the "dead/dying" rotor with a JOE HUNT rotor. You won't believe the spark and how hard you don't have to kick. Many pussies have been scared off my offer to let them ride my bike if they can start it. "Hell no those bikes kick back or break your leg" is what I hear. A good mag and "working" Tillotson are a great combination if you know how to "hug" them.

    • @JKDROB
      @JKDROB 9 лет назад +3

      Exactly, most of the people spouting off about magnetos really have no experience with them. They just spit back out information they heard from a friend, that heard it from another guy who read it somewhere...etc. A properly working magneto is rock solid. The offer to"ride it if you can start it" generally shuts up alot of wannabe's. The guys that shoot off their mouths about sporties..etc.
