The Partridge Family - I'll Meet You Halfway

- The Partridge Family was the '70s successor to the Monkees. Both were totally fictional rock/pop "bands" produced by Screen Gems, the television branch of Columbia Pictures. While the Monkees (TV series and band concept) were styled as mid-'60s counter-culture zaniness à la the Beatles' film Hard Days Night, the Partridge Family was strictly wholesome with traditional family values despite the lite quasi-hip tone of the show. The top-rated series first-aired on ABC from 1970 to 1974, premiering September 25, 1970. Besides the face and voice of David Cassidy ,one of the other draws of the show was the uncanny deadpan timing of Danny Bonaduce as Danny Partridge and the simmering neurosis of the group's manager Reuben Kincaid as played by Dave Madden. When sharing a scene together, the two were hysterical.
Starring stage and screen veteran Shirley Jones and then up-and-coming actor David Cassidy, The Partridge Family was loosely based on real-life family pop/rock band the Cowsills ("Hair," "The Rain, The Park & Other Things," "Indian Lake," "Love American Style"). The other Partridge siblings were Susan Dey as Laurie, Suzanne Crough as Tracy, and Jeremy Gelbwaks as Chris during the first season. Gelbwaks' parents felt uncomfortable with the ensuing mania that surrounded the show and took the youngster out of the cast. He was replaced in the role by Brian Foster. The only members of the cast heard on the records are lead vocalist Cassidy and Shirley Jones on background vocals. All of the Partridge Family records were originally released on Bell Records. The harmonies on the Family's records were quite similar to another Bell act, the 5th Dimension.
In the premiere episode, the Partridge siblings ask their mom Shirley to help them make a record label demo. Recording "I Think I Love You," the family gets signed to a record label and has a number one record their first time out. "I Think I Love You," written by Tony Romeo and producer by Wes Farell, actually did become a number one million-selling pop hit, holding down the spot for three weeks beginning November 21, 1970.
Other Partridge Family hits were: "Doesn't Somebody Want to Be Wanted," another million-seller hitting number six pop in early 1971; "I'll Meet You Halfway," which hit number nine pop in spring 1971; and "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" from summer 1971. Besides "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do," none of the other Partridge Family singles broke the Pop Top 30. The huge album sales were fueled by the show's practice of fully featuring two songs per episode. As with the Monkees, top L.A. session players the Wrecking Crew (bassist Joe Osborn, drummer Hal Blaine, and keyboardist Larry Knechtel) were recruited to play on the Patridge Family hits. The Crew can also be heard on the background music of the TV series.
Of course, with a phenomenally successful Top Ten TV show comes the opportunity for a merchandising bonanza. There were Partridge Family games, magazines, coloring books, music and paperback books, pillow cases, toy guitars, dolls, lunch boxes, beach towels, paper dolls, and a line of children's clothing, which generated about 500 million dollars in licensing revenue for the studio. With so much money being generated from his visage, Cassidy wanted a piece of the profits. As the show became increasingly popular, Cassidy became more at odds with the squeaky clean image of the Keith Partridge character. To alleviate the dichotomy, Cassidy did a scathing interview in Rolling Stone, basically knocking the show, admitting to his marijuana use and groupie sex. He also posed for a frontal, semi-nude poster that was included in the issue. To no avail, the show's ratings remained high. After four seasons, Cassidy decided to call it quits, and the producers, deciding that there was no show without him, stopped production on the show.
Berated by some, just as the Monkees were ("the Fabricated Four," a snide variation of the Beatles' press-tagged nom de plume, the Fab Four) for not being a "real" band, the Partridge Family (the TV show and the record releases) have outlasted their contemporary critics, selling over 25 million records and leaving a lasting legacy of fan clubs and enduring rock/pop/bubblegum music. ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide

David Cassidy was a very underrated singer.
Agee
Probably got the musical talent from his mother.
@@artrolf4223
Stop writing nonsense.
David Cassidy inherited his father's talent.
David's father was the famous actor and singer, Jack Cassidy.
You are absolutely correct his dad was a great actor totally agree 100%
And singer
Yes my favorite Partridge Family song.
La mía también. A mis 64 años.
Miss my childhood loved this show
Recently saw Shaun Cassidy in concert. He sang this song as a tribute to his brother David. It was very moving. A fantastic concert.
I sawi it too, nice.
Best Partridge Family song.
I met David in recent years at a racetrack and in concerts. Such a sweet man. I will finally see Shaun in concert 11/27
That's beautiful.
@@NickNicometiI agree.
This was my favorite program in the 70s I miss that generation
Don't we all!
Simpler times, a lot of loss. Wish things were different or Davis, he had a great voice , and great guitarist, not alot of people recognized it
When I was 10 years old, I wanted a trampoline for Christmas and my mother gave me the Partridge Family's first album instead.......and I still have it after 42 years. So glad I am not the only person who still thinks PF music is some of the happiest to be heard. :-)
I grew up listening to the Porridge family when I was in my young teens.
I have the first LP . love listening to their music David Cassidy true legend heartthrob.
What a great memory!!
Did you ever get a trampoline?
Up To Date was my first PF album that I picked out and Mom paid for--I was 9--the show had just premiered, and I was in The PF Cult!
I started guitar lessons the following summer, and you may see the result to your left. "I'll Meet You Halfway" is still in active repertoire (I played this video in just now in rehearsal).
I was brought up with the Beatles and the stones until I met my first love . And David Cassidy .
This guy Rocked .
I've saved a lot of vinyl over the years, but the ones I miss the most are The Partridge Family albums. I was 10 when the first one came out and I listened to it over and over and over. Those albums planted the seed for me to become a multi-instrumental musician, taught me about song structure, verses, choruses, harmonies, drum breaks, etc. I believe The Wrecking Crew were the LA studio musicians on these albums and I couldn't have had better teachers. I could tell by watching Jeremy Gelbwaks on TV that he definitely didn't know how to play the drums. I saw Hal Blaine's name on the liner notes as the drummer, and wondering if he was a cool dude. When I listen to PF songs now, it takes me right back to sitting on the floor with a record player and dropping that needle over and over. 10 years old, singing at the top of my lungs. Pure joy.
I love this post. Those were the days for sure. I also had that first album, got it for Christmas. I actually found it before Christmas lol and counted down the days till I could act "surprised." I played it non-stop. Congrats that you followed your musical dreams!
I love the Partridge Family. 🙂🙃
Just beautiful. What a loss to the world. Listening in August 2024 and on 21/11/2024....
7 years to the day David Cassidy left us...this song really touches my heart.
🖤💜🖤💜🖤
I could listen to this over and over. He looks absolutely amazing
Me too.
David really had a terrific voice. Smooth with a bit of vibrato. Always have been impressed with how well he sang.
Major influence!!!
Vi-whatever-o the guy's a natural singer that had issues that made him miserable.
agree
I've seen a lot of early (and recent) David Cassidy concert footage, he never hit bad notes, and his vibrato was amazingly smooth and controlled. Funny thing, he wanted to be an actor, not a musician. When his career took off, he was a solid Blues and Rock&Roll fan. He was a great singer and a very good guitarist. I would recommend reading his autobiography.
David's singing was a bit of a cheat. He sang the songs a little slower & then it was sped up to give that higher sound & twang.
50+ years later and I'm still listening. These songs will always have a place in my heart. ✌️David!
One of my favorite songs.... so sad he is gone.... RIP .
Every time I listen to this song, it just fulfills my happiness throughout the day. It is the prettiest song by The Partridge Family, and David Cassidy. It just has a lot of meaning to where, as we all grow up in life, we will always be able to love someone, and to be loved right back. Getting back to 1971 could've never been so heartwarming.🎼🎶🎵
So well said.
Absolutely love the partridge family 😊
I was in love with David Cassidy...he was such a great talent, Shirley Jones was the mother everyone would want to have, Susan Dey the sister and friend everybody would want to have and Danny Bonaduce was just hysterical. Great show back in simpler times.
I never missed the show. I was 12 when it appeared .
When David Cassidy died, I was watching the news and they showed this clip and I just cried . . . just cried.
LuvTadnDixie m
LuvTadnDixie - me too. It's now coming up to the one year anniversary of David passing - and I am not over it...at all. SO sad; such a beautiful man; such a talent - gone too early.
Still am

David Cassidy was clearly a unique and exceptional vocalist. Kudos to Shirley Jones, who was already a top tier star (Oklahoma) but allowed her stepson to take and earn the limelight.
Yes indeed. The Partridge Family records were actually David Cassidy solo albums with vocal backing by Shirley Jones and studio musicians. David's vocals were dynamic!
Allen, you nailed it! They were David Cassidy solo albums with the great Shirley Jones singing backup!@@allenjones3130
The first Partridge Family disc I bought and played it over and over. We were all so young and innocent. Wonderful days.
RIP David. You were great. So was The Partridge Family.
George Vreeland Hill exactly GVH
I love this song it gives me comfort
I really liked David Cassidy he was my teen idol
Loved David Cassidy. He had a great voice! So adorable 🥰
Everyone, dont let David's memories and voice ever be forgotten. Here today and always
This is def the best PF song. Really good.
A beautiful soul
Totally underrated but still badass to this day in 2023 I mean come on you can't disagree
bs/ how can you be under rated when you have 5 gold albums and 2 gold singles ?
I used to love the way Shirley partridge moved her head from side to side when she was singing .
LIKED ALL THEIR HITS........... GREAT MUSIC.
David Cassidy was my first serious crush! When my husband and I were getting to know each other a few years ago, I asked him did he ever have a favorite song? you could have knocked me off my chair when he said " I Think I Love You " by the Partridge Family.....to this day it is his own special ring tone!!!
The Partridge Family the most beautiful music of all time I love them so much
Breaks my heart what David is dealing with now.
The were all so young and had such angelic faces, especially David 😇
I love you David!!!!!
One of his early songs before he really found his voice. Still, it's my favorite PF song. 😊
David will live in my heart forever. I have watched all of The Partridge Family musical TV performances hundreds of times. The tears are decreasing, being replaced with smiles when I view these vintage gems. R.I.P David. Thank you for the gifts you gave to this world.
if you have direct tv, every sat. & sun. morning from 11-1 the partridge fam. comes on channel 323 family entertainment network
Also like the colorful robe Keith is wearing at the end. David was so cute as Keith Partridge because he had that baby face and was short! David was such a good talented actor, people couldn't believe he was completely opposite Keith Partridge. Cursed, rock and rolled, did the 60's stuff before the show, he claims he was bad! Now I see a kind man who touches my heart when I see him in pain. God Bless.
This is my favorite Partridge Family song! Cool show! Great comedy! And the music was wonderful! What a super talent David Cassidy was! That voice....amazing! Luv me some David Cassidy!!
David could sing like an angel
David Cassidy was such a fox in his day. I had a huge crush on him. You will never be forgotten.RIP
I always want to remember this...a happy part of my life.
My fave song of theirs...❤
Shirley turns 90 this year, it will be sad when we lose her as well.
RIP, one of my biggest childhood crushes... David Cassidy.
He needs to be in the rock and roll hall of fame now
R.I.P. David , your music lives on
I was 17 when this came out. Great song. Very memorable. Unusual and quite sophisticated, considering the “bubble gum” pop around at the time. Just heard it on the radio just now and realised I knew most of the lyrics, which means I really liked it at the time.
He was heavenly. My first concert when I was about six years old!!!!!
This song makes me so happy!! A wonderful time in my life they truly were the wonder years❤️❤️❤️❤️RIP David and Suzanne
what a talent
Wow! I wish I was 10 again! RIP DAVID😘
David Cassidy… teenage girl heartthrob… can relate… love this … KlassiK timeless… looking forward to it…
Makes me want to mash the repeat button everytime iheart this song a part of my life that want ever leave.
This is the really good music
The mother's voice is beautiful✨😍
Shirley Jones
I like his voice, even in 2020. RIP David Cassidy!
Praying for David Cassidy.
I had all their records back in the 70’s sang out loud with David in my bedroom
David had a beautiful voice....loved the Partridge Family and I was at the right age when it first aired...Rest In Peace David Cassidy
This was one of my fab from the PF. Timeless even in 2020. RIP David Cassidy. Thank you for all the music!
My Favorite along with I Think I Love You. We were so blessed to be the original generation to experience and enjoy 1st hand, now our children and their children can enjoy it also if we show these 60's, & 70's episodes of Thw Monkees, The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch. There are fundamental lessons in all of them.
What about I can feel your heartbeat?
I Think I Love You and I'll meet you half way. David and I share the same birthday. April 12. And both of Our Grandmothers names were Charlotte. And when We were younger We both went to Trinity Church. His was in West Orange, N.J. The one I went to was in South Jersey. My Maiden name was Madden. I use to tell People Dave Madden was my Uncle, and that one year he took me to the Studio to meet David Cassidy for Our Birthday's. The fibs we would tell Our Friends back when We were 12. I also had the famous lunch box. The one David complained about. I think he was more upset that they ripped him off. He should of been able to sue them. They made millions off of him alone. He had a unique voice. His favorite Mansion, out of all the homes he Owned through the years. He had to Auction it off, just two years before he passed. Because of his Divorce. Two Male Fans bought it, and they rent it out. It's in Palm Springs, Florida. They rent it out at $25,000. a night. There's 6 bedrooms, so if 6 Couples got together , they could rent it at $4,150. a. Night. It's a really nice home, and kind of private.
Fully agree with you Dude ...they were great times back then...
Happy free spirited days of the 1970@s
My favorite song by them. Adult and well sung by David and Ms. Jones.
Hard to believe he’s gone, we were so young, so much time gone by, at least we have the reruns ,the memories and the music, thanks David
He said once he had always wanted to be considered a rock musician but this show set him in stone as a teeny popper idol and it ate at him
This is just GREAT!! I remember seeing this when it originally aired!! Check out a young Michael Ontkean in the audience!! Thanks for this
memories of June 1971
Me to, so many good times👍
This song came into my head this morning and I couldn't get it out!
I LOVED The Partridge Family!!! I loved their show and their music!!!
Michael Ontkean was the man looking at Lorie Partridge (Susan Dey).
He was on the ROOKIES and many tv movies, decent CANADIAN actor.
Decent Canadian
I am sure will did not say it right.
Michael Ontkean was a love interest for Harry Hamlin, too. He had that in common with Susan.
Yes, that's right.
Great pop music .
Omg - so many memories... I wish I can go back.......
Great memories..with what is going on today I think we all wish we had a time machine
Loved that show, and so many others from the 70's, when I was a kid. 😊
i miss you very much david cassidy
My favorite song under The Partridge Family name, followed closely by "Only A Moment Ago". Both songs are incredible because of David Cassidy's voice. He was an awesome singer and had an achingly beautiful face. I will continue to listen every day, even if it's just a song or two, as I have been doing for years, until my time is up. Whether it be the epilepsy or something else that takes me out of the picture, I will listen to you sing until then. Thank you, David.
fluffandskipper
Loved the descriptive “achingly beautiful face”! Says it all perfectly!! Thank you!
That's how I feel about that face, too. He was so beautiful that I have also commented he was gorgeous beyond belief. How could one man be so attractive? Yes, achingly beautiful. He was all that and more.
I forgot to say thank you for your comment. Best regards and blessings to you.
He was my first celebrity crush .. yes beautiful face , beautiful voice and a beautiful soul
@@karenroberts641 Absolutely!!! My first celebrity crush, too.
Yes, I saw him perform at Exhibition Stadium in the early 70s (Toronto, Ontario). I was thrilled, though my Mom embarrassed me at my Aunt and Uncle's house going on and on about David showing his backside to the audience so much.
I love watching these videos of The Partridge Family I even had a crush on Danny B
Me and my sister love this show growing up . She had a crush on David and I was in love with Susan Day and Shirley Jones...what great times back then ...but all joking aside Dave Cassidy had a great voice and could really sing alot of beautiful songs . This is one of my favorite songs and still is . The man was underrated and it's really a super shame it his life ended like it did . Count your Blessings everyone , everyday . Hated to see him leave us and David I pray you are at Peace and having a great time up there and singing away with your beautiful voice ... Thank-you for the great music and wonderful memories...
Blessings to David Cassidy xx
I always loved this song but although i cherished it, it was super sad in my eyes and in my heart and i didnt know why???
Fast forward.... I honestly didnt hear this song in thirty something years but recently came across it and immediately after prior years of councelling realized it was because my father never had time for me and then died when i was a teenager without anything bring resolved. The sadness came from this prior wishful subconscious or buried loss of connecting with him.
I had never put it together until it recently played.. it hit me like a ton of bricks now that I healed from it all.
Amazing complex minds that we have!!!!
I love them and their music. And what a great show.
To see and hear them makes me feel young again !
Good for any race, any religion, any person. Such morals and class, it brings tears into my eyes. My wish is humanity waking up one day and realizing how much it strayed from the good path... before self-destruction. RIP, David Cassidy.
David Cassidy was my first concert - ever. I saw him in Seattle in 1971, at 14 years old. I will always love you, David. 😌
Such a catchy pop song ❤❤❤
This song was stuck somewhere way back in my mind from long ago. Literally, soon as I woke up this morning, there it was. That's a special kind of magic, music magic! 🙂
I call it, the Jukebox of the mind. So you have this too, eh? Funny how that works. Nice to know I'm not entirely alone now. Enjoy and God bless!
@@1allanbmw Oh yeah, mine is huge! 🙂Gets kind of crazy sometimes how much music is still there. Bless you too.
Rest in Paradise, David Cassidy!!! Loved you so much. So many of my childhood memories have you in them.
David you are so special to me love you all the time in my life
I am one of the biggest fans of David!! I saw him in 1969 in concert in Scotland . Had my walls in my bedroom plastered with his pictures. And I am sad he’s gone😢 wish his life wasn’t at the end so hard. 😞🏴
He toured even before partridge family?
Love this song ❤❤❤
Great song. My first Crush David Cassidy. There will never be anyone so talented as David was. Will always love you David. Forever in my heart xxx💖💖💖
MY FAVORITE TV SHOW
Had all kinds of David Cassidy's posters on my wall back in the good old days .

Davey Jones and David Cassidy REAL PEOPLE RIP DAVEY JONES
Rest in peace, David Cassidy
💔
My favorite song
This is my favorite Partridge Family song. It was on their Up To Date album, the one that showed all of their birthdays.
And yes, I was in 8th grade and had crush on David Cassidy not Susan Dey, David Cassidy. I never missed that show and I have all their albums.
When David Cassidy was younger and I was he was my favorite singer I watched The Partridge always such a great show
My favorite Partridge Family song.
That's a really groovy tune..It's from 1971 season 1 episode 23 "Not With My Sister, You Don't"..I grew up with the Partridge's and this definitely takes me back to the 70's..At least I can now watch them on Comcast on the station Antenna TV Channel 295..
It just doesn't get better than this!!
God, David's mother must have been so proud to have created such a beautiful son! He always came across as so very sensual, sensitive and thoughtful. And he was probably very lucky to also have Shirley Jones in his life during these professional years and perhaps even afterwards. Such a pity that he couldn't stop obsessing about his father not admiring him for his beautiful work! Because that was at the root of all his alcohol problems that ended up totally ruining his life and ultimately killing him...
We've all got our demons, right?!
