  • @Joseph_harpist

    If you want to play accidentally just press and hold the string at the opposite side of the bridge while the other hand plugging the string. Which means this lyre can play more than half tone notes which you need to play the Ancient Greek songs.

    It is really a beautiful instrument. You can tune the strings to sharps and play many melodies in the guitar mods/ scales. Im learning now chromatic lyre wich is also super exciting. Diatonic lyre I have also. I know a youtuber @Samantha on mars who made thousands of musical cover for 7//16 and (I think also) 19 strings diatonic lyre.

      Hello Magdalena, I agree with you, and my personal favorite tuning is D minor (which means tuning down the B's to Bb's). Some day I would like to have a nylon string harp too, perhaps a celtic harp...but they get so big and I already have so many instruments that take up space in my studio haha. 😂

    And how many strings do you recommend a beginner have?

    • @Joseph_harpist
      @Joseph_harpist Год назад +2

      The strings on this lyre are guitar strings with no tension / light strings type. I do not recommend to change to nylon it’s doesn’t work and sound very poor. The beginners need at lease 19 strings and the more strings are the better since beginner doesn’t know about mode of the songs such as Dorian ,Aeolian etc.

      If it is a lute body instrument with a yoke and no frets, it's a lyre. The strings have to have a bridge. A lyre harp is just a lyre, and it's called a harp usually when someone is emphasizing the higher number of strings.

    • @matthewvaughan8192
      @matthewvaughan8192 Год назад

      @@hellomate639 Yeah I’m still not 100% sure 7 months later, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a Lyre and the harmonised way it is being played is fictional. Lyres and Harps don’t have any means by which to play 8-bar block chord progressions like a guitar, right? Just arppegio chords? In the movie she is strumming what looks like a Lyre to block chords, but it’s at least 5 chords, so I can’t conceive of any way a Lyre could do that without a fret board (unless there is some sort of mechanical attachment I don’t know about)

    • @hellomate639

      @@matthewvaughan8192 Do you have a link to the scene? Or an image of it?
      It could also be an overdub, but one method of playing the lyre is to mute strings and then strum it.
      You can actually do some reasonably interesting chord progressions this way.

    Nice vid, just a couple of tweaks. Harmonics allow 6 string lyre players to play 18 notes, and there are many methods of playing. Ancient lyres tended to be strummed a lot like a guitar, so are better with few strings. Simply plucking basic melodies seems to be a modern thing to do on these "ancient" 21st century mass produced Chinese lyres, like you are holding.

    this is not a real lyre. Sadly, almost no one makes real lyres anymore except some stores on etsy and another lyre maker called LUTHERIOS where they make genuine reproduction of greek lyres. A genuine greek lyre can be played with a much wider range of techniques, allowing you to get two or more octives on just seven strings. But unfortunately because those lyres are all hand made and not many people buy them, they are all very expensive...
