US 101 North (CA), Hollywood Freeway, Downtown LA to North Hollywood

- Опубликовано: 10 июл 2011
- This video follows US 101 North, from its southern terminus at I-5 near Downtown LA, to the CA 134/CA 170 interchange in North Hollywood. Offers views of the LA skyline, with glimpses of the Hollywood Sign, the Capitol Records Building, and also includes the exhilarating drive over Cahuenga Pass.
I'll never forget my first time in LA. Took an uber up the 101 into Burbank. When I realized I was on the 101, the hills by the weeknd came on the radio and it was just magic. It really is a cool stretch of asphalt
Major Dad
I really like these videos! Thank you for making them so that those of us who can't travel to LA can still experience it :)
Right on, thank you! I have a better edited video of the Santa Monica Freeway that I released a few months ago, in case you want to watch. I've provided the link below.
I-10 East (CA), Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles, I-405 To Downtown Los Angeles
I was born and raised in L.A. --- The San Fernando Valley, to be exact. Going to Hollywood was always an adventure, normally something done on the weekends. Lots of trips to the Sunset Strip and Amoeba Music. Now living in Oregon, I miss it more than ever.
Your work is quite remarkable in its detail Brent; the road signs, pictures of the landmarks etc. Well done! Love, love, love your work!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for uploading this. I have been in Texas for years and missed California. I have driven this route hundreds of times.
Sorry that you're home sick. Glad the video helped bring back some good memories, though!
Same here. Live in Texas now but grew up in LA, and I really miss it. Used to drive exactly this route to work and back in an 94 cop Chevy. Now THAT, was driving:)
Love your videos and the accompanying music
Your songs are so awesome and catchy in these freeway videos! :)
your vids are great man! One of my favorite experiences in SoCal/NorCal was just driving and enjoying the scenery. Thanks your helping me relive these great times
Haha, glad you enjoyed watching. Yes, the scenery all over California is just fantastic.
I made this video a few years ago, and I've improved my editing techniques quite a bit. Feel free to check out my featured and recently released video of the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto (it's on my RUclips home page), another fantastic drive with some mesmerizing skyline views.
Ran into you by accident. What a happy accident! Being from Southern California, this is a gift. Thank you. I miss California and the freeways. Thank you for posting .Made my day:)
Think of the stars that must drive this freeway every day💖 perfect tune too
Another awesome video, Brent! Great mix of music with beautiful scenery! California is just too nice.
Gorgeous views of the skyline!
This feels like a completely new video, not just an improvement of the previous one. The music here was better and conveyed a mood that matches the drive, yet it's something I can't express. The views were impressive and the bridge architecture was more notable than normal. It's a drive I have yet to experience. Well done FreewayBrent!
i love the way you edit your videos and the music you put in is phenominal man:)
great job!!:)
Nice to see this famous place ! Thanks for posting this.
u are the best buddy , i love your videos really nice job
. great job Brent - luv the views - appreciate the work with the music too - thanks ..
Your vids make me relive vacation memories, just awesome. Whenever I travel I'm not so much into the tourist destinations or attractions, but just driving around on the freeways and living and experiencing like a local. Infrastructure, man.
And in LA, nothing is more local than driving or getting stuck in traffic. LOL
Amazing . Very nice ride on the highway to LA . Thanx a lot !
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the ride. If you don't mind, I'd like to link you to a better edited video of a nearby freeway, the Santa Monica Freeway. Released it onto RUclips a few months ago. Link provided below.
I-10 East (CA), Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles, I-405 To Downtown Los Angeles
Glad you enjoyed, and thanks for coming along for the ride!
I love driving in Los Angeles. There is an energy there, you feel it when you drive through the hills.
Never been anywhere else where I am happy to get stuck in traffic. Simply amazing.
Nice work Brent!!
Thanks for the great ride!
GroomLeader : Thank you! So many comments I need to respond to you on this video, lol. Anyway, my video editing has improved a bit since releasing this US 101 video. I'll link you to another LA-area video I released, not too long ago...I-405 over Sepulveda Pass.

Great video!! great music by the way
Great video, excellent music!
Awesome video of north hollywood very nice coming from the man of freeway videos
This is the first of your videos that I've seen and it's really good. I wouldn't mind if the pace were a wee bit slower, but the music is fine and I really like how you label everything. For us non-Angelenos that's really a plus. Excellent job. I'll be sure and check out more of your work.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! I filmed this on a Sunday before 10 a.m. (and checked beforehand to make sure there were no sporting or special events in the immediate areas), in order to more-or-less guarantee myself a congestion-free ride. Seemed to work for the best.
Always happy to watch your videos, so long as I mute the audio and listen to FreewayJim's instead. 101 around downtown reminds me more of an East Coast freeway, very tight and twisty compared to the vast open expanse of, say, the 405.
True. But the pavement gives it away
The distinctive overpasses on the 1940 Cahuenga Pass have survived the various freeway extensions and road widening over the years - the latter helped greatly by the isolated freeway having Pacific Electric’s line originally in the median. After closure this made way for additional lanes. A close inspection will reveal where the overhead wires originally attached under the bridge soffits through here.
Greatest song in your video!
@interstateruler: Thanks! I filmed this around 9:30 a.m. on a Sunday, to minimize the chances of getting stuck in traffic. The Hollywood Freeway is usually slammed with cars, all day long. I'd say Greater LA takes the cake for traffic. NYC is horrible too, but at least you don't have to focus on 5, 6, 7, 8+ lanes of traffic in each direction. Chicago is pretty awful, too. The SF Bay Area used to have notoriously bad traffic too, but ... (read part 2 of this response)
3:10 Walter White and Jessie
@luigicamp69: Awesomeness. It's one of my favorite rides in the Greater Los Angeles area, even when it's congested (which is pretty much most of the day, at least thru the heart of Hollywood). This isn't going to be the only video of "The 101" that I'll be featuring, either. Stay tuned for a new release, coming in the next day or two...
@FreewayBrent Oh cool! You should get a video driving up near the Hollywood sign! That steep narrow winding road is crazy!!
thanks for the ride. we have not been to this part of the freeways.. but I figured it has to be the same as the other fast L.A. freeways in terms of excitement for people who are not from the area. :) Also I noticed, you don't actually see everything when you are the one driving. So it is fun to watch videos of our own drive.
amazing mr.Brent from pasadena ,your videos what can i say ,cool!!! L.A. is tha place to be
btw excellent job and choice of music too !
I love driving in LA! The drive down the PCH is amazing.
Perfection!
@rockersk08: Yeah, I completely wanted to distinguish the two videos as being anything but the same. I referred to some of the information in the old annotations, but no two-annotations are alike between the old and new version. I really had to dig deep in my hard drive to find this song; I hadn't listened to it in 3 years. And yeah, you don't see too many architectural gems for freeway overpasses in California. All in all, I'm glad with how this video turned out. Thanks for watching!
Nice video! Transferring to CSULA for fall 2017 and this will most likely be the route I will take everyday there and back! Super excited!
+JN Beats : Nice! What part of the country are you moving from, if you don't mind me asking?
+FreewayBrent Omaha, Nebraska
Very cool. Been to Omaha a few times. A little too much fun on my end, in the Old Market area, lol.
I have a couple of other videos in LA that feature better editing. If you wanna check out one of them, I've provided the link below. The Santa Monica Freeway.

Cool Video! Right now Los Angeles looks pretty good since I'm freezing my butt off in Minnesota. Well today it's going to warm up to 40 degrees so that will be nice.
Some of my videos are sped up at a faster pace, but that's designed to match the "speed" of the song I choose. I've much improved my editing, since I released this video. Feel free to check out my newest release; the special presentation episode, showcasing the westbound ride over the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
Glad you enjoyed watching, thanks for stopping by!
@mellamojasono5: I just do my best to leave 2 to 3 seconds of space, and that seems to take care of most of the merging problems (and takes out a lot of the stress of driving). A bit tricky to leave that much space and keep up with the flow of traffic, but I seem to manage it just fine.
Speaking of CA 110, that actually might be my very next video. Stay tuned...
@GeoffJennyOliver: I added quite a few when I first put this video up. I think there's a limit to how many tags you can add? Otherwise, I could type up a whole page of tags, just for this one video, lol.
it depends on what caltrans district you're in. in sacramento, about 85-90% of the signs are now reflective with exit numbers, and they're still replacing most of the older button copy types. some districts have their way and timing in replacing those overhead signs.
I drove this road with my friends last year in June when we were coming back to LA from Vegas... memories :-)
i get to drive this freeway often when i need to jet up to the valley or ventura, 101 is beautiful and fun between downtown and where it meets 405, but it all depends on what time of day you drive it, and whether or not an orange truck has overturned again.
f*** ing brilliant !
great song
great speed ups and slowdowns
crystal clear
@round the 4:49 mark there is a dip ending in a slow down it looks like they are floating ! so cool
every road in North America baby !!!
some day...
Thanks!!
@KennedyKrazee: Hey there, just got around to reading this now. I actually feature every song artist and title at the end of my videos, just for future reference. For this particular video, the artist is Milky feat. Guidy, and the song name is "Just The Way You Are" (Extended Mix). Thanks for watching!
lol...I do find that people tend to be more aggressive in Los Angeles, than just about any other city I've ever driven around. Well, NYC, Chicago and Miami can certainly make a case for worst drivers. Driving styles to tend to vary, with more courteous driving styles found in the quieter/less-congested areas.
Thanks for watching!
@Seriloin: Yes, I'll agree with you on that point. I really only started driving that stretch on a regular basis about 4 years ago, when I used to work down in Orange County, but made frequent trips up the 5 to Hollywood. A great way to approach downtown L.A.
Hi everyone, thanks for dropping by and watching! Love reading the comments that come thru on a weekly basis.
The portion of Cesar Chavez Ave. that has an interchange with US-101 as exit 1C used to be known as Macy Street. Just east of US-101, the portion of Cesar Chavez Ave. that has an interchange with I-5 was known as Brooklyn Ave. That NB I-5 interchange was originally exit 135 in the original 1971 exit numbering experiment in Los Angeles, and when exit numbering was introduced in California in 2002, it became exit 135B (though it probably should be exit 135A). The US-101 interchange at the former Macy St. has always been exit 1C.
Great video! I love the infrastructure you have in U.S. Here, in Argentina, we are lucky if we have a new highway in 20 years. Since the 80's, the Buenos Aires Goverment wants to do a massive highway through the city. Until today, we just have a few expropiated houses, but nothing of concrete for make it. Excuse my poor english.
Life is super busy and I hope to be down in Los Angeles this summer cruising down the highway it's a 20 hour drive from Vancouver BC Canada. Nothing in life is better than being in California baby!
@mayi360: I'm truly appreciative that the time I put into these videos allows casual viewers like you to really enjoy a freeway ride on RUclips. Thanks a lot!
North Hollywood is a cool place to live. I enjoy it!!! Nothing beats SoCal.
@bsdpowa: Glad you enjoyed! Never quite sure how my subscribers will react to the songs I use.
Great video.
Liked the way you detailed everything with captions.
You should do a video with the song, Freeway Of Love, by Aretha Franklin.
George.
@platformusa2: I've rented cars numerous times in the past, but never to specifically film. That may change this summer though, when I drive up to the Pacific Northwest to visit, as well as re-record everything with my new camcorder.
Amazing.. :)
I haven't done any actual new recordings in a couple of months, but if there's a stretch of roadway I haven't captured on film, it's a simple matter of setting up the tripod and attaching the camcorder. Pretty easy. :-)
@FreewayAndrew: I'm actually staying with my parents for the summer, about 90 minutes from North Lake Tahoe. Looking forward to getting back down south soon; LA's a very fun city.
So funny/cool how you speed up or slow down the traffic to the music! xD
A fun little flashback of sorts for me... I've only driven the section north of Sunset Blvd. On the other hand I've driven most of it between there and San Francisco!
I started to watch it in 480, then after some 15 sec thought it deserves to be watched in HD. Great video. Relaxing music. Did you shoot this on a sunday morning? There's not much congestion.
I personally think it fit very well and I can't picture this video with another song. :):)
@wipandco: Hey, thanks bud. I had to dig far into my archive of songs to find that song. And yup, I shot this around 9:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. There's no way I would have been able to film this without congestion on any of the other days (Saturday's included).
@SossarHatarSverige: I completely avoid the #3 lane heading southbound, just after Cahuenga Pass, as its completely worn out in several spots.
Thanks so much for this bro. I got my undergraduate degree at UCLA, and this really took me back (minus the traffic of course).
Do you have a video of the PCH by chance? If not I would like to request it. Best drive in all of Southern California in my opinion.
@tall32guy: In my opinion, the worst direction of congestion, the NB I-405 approach to the interchange, was significantly improved when Caltrans added a 6th lane approaching the interchange in the mid 2000's. Before that lane addition, the entire northbound ride used to be take up to 2 1/2 hours to drive along a 14 mile stretch. The other 3 approaches to the interchange are bad, but none rank among the top 5 worst, when factoring in average speeds. Bad, yes, but not gridlocked.
@grvk: Thanks for watching!
@ScrewdUPClickV2: I think the southbound ride is better (and more climatic), but I've *never* had an opportunity to record it without severe traffic in good lighting conditions, and that includes Sunday late afternoons.
It's an awesome city, indeed!
brilliant
2:35 unused collector lane, possibly for a once planned Glendale Freeway interchange?
Los Angeles
@Einhander49: Sorry you didn't like the song, but I *do* appreciate the honesty. I was just trying to find something that sounded "positive" and upbeat, since this video was more of a celebration about both the history and popular culture, regarding the Hollywood Freeway.
@g1cast: Haha. Yeah, driving around L.A. can be a thrill, as well as a pain...sometimes simultaneously. The Hollywood Freeway definitely stands out for its history, some of the neat architecture of its overpasses, and it's still relatively modern design (how many 8 lane freeways with full acceleration ramps existed in the early 1950's/??).
I live four hours from LA and have never been there before :( Family in OC and San Diego though.
Matt Schibetta : Wow...Google+/RUclips hasn't been notifying me of any comments on this video, over the past several months. Just went to check out the comments, and saw a bunch of new ones. Anyway, come on up and visit sometime!
FreewayBrent
@spurnout: Haha, perhaps I should have mentioned that this was recorded on a Sunday morning at 9:30. :-)
awesome
@eluko79: Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I love the architecture of some of those bridges around Cincinnati. Pittsburgh's got some GREAT ones, too.
Like your music your Brent and it's the same song that's what Jim used in Yankee Expressway Interstate 84 Hartford Connecticut. 101 fwy East Los Angeles Interchange to Hollywood on weekdays suffer from heavy traffic. That includes commuters coming in from Carson Harbor Freeway to Hollywood
Eventually. :-) Northbound I-710, as well as the bridges and roads through the Port of LA and Port of Long Beach.
Tell me about it. There's specific lanes that I'll avoid on certain key stretches of freeway, just to avoid the worst of the potholes and ruts.
I remember seeing Mario-styled graffiti on that warehouse at 1:15 when I was on my way to Universal Studios back in 2008.
I remember both the Hollywood and Ventura Freeways clearly because we would take the 170 North Hollywood Fwy to Victory Blvd. Only once or twice did we ever take the Ventura Fwy.
@litrojan: California is indeed awesome. So much variety in its geography, and the roads that traverse the state.
That is awesome Brent, I bet the traffic is heavy. In your opinion, what city have you been that has the most traffic?
@aflutes1706: Glad you enjoyed!
@IntuneGames: Cool, man! Thanks for checking in, dude.
thanks for posting this! SoCal is the best :)
This is my favorite video out of all freeway brents drives other than virgin river gorge
BRINGS BACK MEMORIES
Awesome, hope they were good memories, lol.
@TVisawesome432: Glad you enjoyed. :-) :-)
@superdevins: Thank you! I forgot I had that song on my hard drive; hadn't listened to it in about 3 years.
