I would note, however, that we are listening to this conversation by virtue of social media.

I totally agree. What a wonderful discussion. As someone who loves computers as much as he loves music, I find that social media is a complete waste of time. What is ultimately does it create noise without any clear sounds.

I agree with you on most of this. I want to point some things out though. First of all I believe that listeners have always been passive to a substantial amount. Mostly elderly people (who grew up and live without internet) sit in concert halls nowadays and I don't believe half of them are active listeners. There has always been an equal amount of 'smart' and 'stupid' people, or people of differing cultural contexts, but the internet opened up the possibility for everyone to write their opinions wherever they wish. So you are confronted with opinions of people whom you would otherwise never have corresponded with. And that makes you think people became more stupid. Just like you think there is more danger in the world because we have better media coverage of all the danger. The 'changed hirarchy' is a problem on one hand, but on the other it allows me to state my opinion here, so it is also a new possibility.
Thank you for this interesting series!

EXACTLY!!!!! Javier Marias said something like that too. We realise how people always really was…now they won. They are much more present today than ever in history. The masses won.

I don't think over-communication in the web and social networks is a problem in itself, these tools have a lot of opportunities, the keypoint is the user. The individual must be capable to discern for itself what is important, what is true, what is useful, when and where he is the product to sell, and the time devoted to these activities. And to be respectful with the ideas and perspectives of the other too! These are today (and will be even more in the future) a huge educational challenge!

they're talking about social media as if it's bad.
They only take the bad parts out of it to talk about.
The thing is, social media is neutral, and as so many other things it can be helpful and at the same time also misused.
For example: that it's a means to vent does not mean that social media is bad. It means that there's a desperate need for venting and being heard. Being taken seriously for the full human one is.
The core of the problem is deeper then these two talk about.
It's about the lack of listening in the world. I would guess that there are a lot of people in the world who don't even know how it feels to be really listened to. To be understood, not just on rational level, but as a full human.
And of course, it's not really a good strategy to go on facebook, because the chance you'll think people really, really get you is very small. But it's the ONLY option many have!
    How sad is that...

It is a popular understanding that classical music is never passive, nor should be the listener. I think people forget that in the 19th and 18th century, the string quartet was largely background music in palaces and that not everyone worshipped the grandeur of the genre as much as we do today until Beethoven came along. Piano compositions likewise. A lot of Chopin's music is in my opinion very passive as well. Of course works like the Ballade in G minor differ quite heavily but do you think that everyone was such a "colossal masterpiece guru" back then as its popularly perceived today? Let's not forget that Liszt's sonata was attacked relentlessly on its premiere.

    • @shadowjuan2
      @shadowjuan2 7 лет назад +6

Friedrich Hueppe Barenboim isn't saying that you should be active every single time you listen to music, if every time you heard a tune you had to stop whatever you are doing then you would find yourself in situations where you had to stop talking to someone or perhaps stop driving to do the listening of the music, that is not what Barenboim meant.
I think what he means is that whether you are attending a concert hall, at home or somewhere where you can peacefully enjoy music you have to be active in the listening to get the full enjoyment and sometimes life changing experience that music brings. Only because music was played in the ballroom of a palace once doesn't mean it was intended to be passively listened by the composer. A composer never intends his music to be passively listened, If you think Chopin intended his creations to be listened while others talk or do their homework then you have not a clue of what you are talking.

That's odd. Maestreo Barenboim posted quite a few videos on youtube where he asked the "users" to interact, comment and share their opinion. He even went so far to reply to some of the comments. I thought those were very interesting and enjoyable videos - in a very constructive way.

The thing about social media is you have to know how to filter information going into your mind w/c needs a certain level of awareness whether something has value or not.
The heirarchy thing they talking about is so real, you can call it as branding as well, you get a certain level of expertise on a subject and give value to people by sharing your thoughts about it. People will follow you. They trust you for that matter.
What's wrong is when you give an opinion to a subject that is not your expertise like politics and "passive listeners" people will follow you blindly without thinking. They're not aware that they agree with you blindly. And you as the expert should be responsible for what you say and "MORALLY AND ETHICALLY" not take advantage of stupidity of this passive listeners

My opinion on over-communication phenomenon is simple: As Daniel take for going into a concert, as everything has its two sides, imagine after 90mins focus in a concer hall for no matter bach or chopin which is quite hard for most of the audience let along the young generations , you need to walk out the wall and take a taxi home far away maybe. In that car you largely happen to hear pop songs and broadcasting, which is to say you need relax by using different part of yout mind. The world is not only comprised by elite, professions, classcial music but also ordinary ones…… Quite cell phone、no move, wherever the minds flies. No person can read another’ himself. Internet only make relaxing and entertaining more convinient、costless and funny . There's mid-round for washing or checking message always. Different people do have different concentration ability inside and outside the music, as every other ability do.

Star violinists are posting non stop videos where they practice at home…a capella…they send the message: oh, Brahms wrote this passage for violin….but Brahms did not do such thing. He wrote a PIECE for violin and orchestra…so, it makes no sense, for example, a clarinetist practising at home the second clarinet part an posting it on youtube. But violinists think it makes sense what they do.
Two examples: Ehnes, Hadelich. There are many more.

These guys are so pretentious and full of it, I cannot believe all of these comments praising them for this. They hold so many hypocritical ideas; for example when Waltz points out how it's absurd that the hierarchy has shifted to people like Zuckerberg on top because all he did is 'invent computer chatting'. Why is it absurd for pioneers to be important people ? Should he be important because he is an actor ? What makes an actor so important ? Who has more of a case to be on top of this 'hierarchy' than the world-makers ?
And the audacity to criticize how people consume as though they have all of the answers. What is wrong with being a 'passive listener' ? Just because others do not consume the same as you does not mean that others consume wrong; even if the speakers' way is the way it has always been does not make it right. Even if the speaker wants his own material consumed in a particular way and people go about it and enjoy it differently than he envisioned, he has no right to criticize people for that.

These two guys are simply uninformed and incurious about that. So, the question of who profits from the leveling they complain about becomes rhetorical. People in the arts have virtually always been at this kind of a loss. The arts establishment, by not understanding and teaching what the arts a really for, are complicit.

Sorry But the moment you sell something it is a commodity- When you given concert's and plays for free then you can criticize. Hypocrisy!!!
