Dear Paul! Thanks for this video! Your forced me to buy one of those Merkur Futur razors. I had one many years ago and didn't like it, so I sold it to a friend of mine. After watching your video I purchased the chrome version and gave it another try. What can I say - I love it to bits now. Maybe I was to unexperienced in those dark days of my youth. Fantastic shave and razor! The chrome finish is beautiful, reminds of the chrome on my first car, a 1955 Oldsmobile. I'm so lucky to be retired and can take my time with every shave. I find myself stalling even then, so enjoyable. It's good to be reminded of using "no pressure" for it's easy to forget. Mrs. W always does the arranging of the flowers, and like Mrs. H she has an eye for it, well done to those two! 20f and windy here, but they say we might see 50f on the weekend, very warm for us mid-February! The ski jumping tournament on Pine Mountain is this weekend so the beer and brats will be flowing! I only live a mile away from the ski jump but I'll stay away from the madding crowds. Excellent video Paul. Keep them coming. I never thought of using witch hazel after a shave but, after watching you, I went out and bought a bottle. It's a great alternative to alum and it doesn't sting. Great job and you make it look fun.

Good review Paul. Used my Merkur Futur today but locked to setting 3. Tried setting 6 good shave but on the edge of razor burn which went away after 1 day. TOBS in a tube travels well. Cheers smooth shaving!
Hello! I remember you have Muhle R41 too, right? How would you compare Futur at setting 1 or 2 to R41? I had R41 but I could not shave against the grain with it. Can you do that with the Futur?

Great shave Paul! Very brave on 6 lol. I have a '65 Slim Adjustable and I have never dialed it all the way up but I have used it on 7 and for me, thats pretty aggressive. Shave on!
oh, paul. you take such good care of mrs h. she did a great job arranging the flowers...as always. great shave. ima call that futur on setting 6 "the grim reaper." ya done good with it. like a total pro. it's funny but, when I first shaved with my futur on 3 I was a tad wary cuz of the size. I can shave with my eyes closed using my straight razors....but, that futur...it feels like a bazooka in the hand. lol

been using the futur for a year now and find setting 3 to agressive enough for me. either way you have to treat it with care and respect as it took a slice off my bottom lip recently and the sink looked like a murder had taken place! you tend to slow down after that!

Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements has a soap called "Cold Spices." So you may want to give that a shot. I've honestly never tried it, but I have tried their "Clubguy" soap that was inspired by Clubman and they did a nice job with landing the scent. And I agree with some of the reviews that the scent is more refined than Clubman. I do own the American Blend aftershave and shaving soap by Fine Accoutrements, which was inspired by Rive Gauche. While it doesn't smell like Old Spice, I still get that same Old Spice feel if you know what I mean. Razorock has a similar product as well called "American Barber." Again, haven't tried it, but have tried other products from their company that smelled almost just like the originals. All 3 companies make fantastic products.
There is only this one, Merkur is the maker, and Futur is the model name, it does fingerprint yes, unless your hands are cold...it is very aggressive, but well built and solid.

When I got into DE shaving just over a year ago I started venturing into trying different AS and balms that I could buy locally without having to order. Of the lot I have that balm you used is my favorite for this time of the year here. Gives me a nice smooth feel for these cold winter days.

I bought two tobs tubs sandalwood and coconut but I prefer Stirling soaps even if it's harder to get in Europe the feel is 100times better in my opinion
"How does it look?" It looked as if you were done after the first pass! I don't think any shave addict can stop after one pass no matter, no fun in that right. So go on, three passes and a pick up run. Question Paul, any razor company could make a razor that exposes more blade, but for it not to slice you must be where the design detail comes in. The Futur looks so smooth, all edges knocked off, is that the secret. I now have about 12 different razors, I look at them and the style differences are obvious but how that relates to the shave is not as clear to me. What are your thoughts? All the best sir.
The styles are different, but when you look at the gap were the blade goes, the larger that is, the more aggressive, the thinner/smaller the gap the less aggressive....styles are just the makers design, a lot of razors look so different, but shave pretty much the same ( if that makes sense ) Thanks Dennis.

Indeed, you tend to handle ultra aggressive razors well. No doubt the next time you use a gentle, mild and completely non-aggressive razor you'll end up needing a transfusion.... XD
i used the same chrome Futur on setting 6 with the 3rd use of a Voskhod blade today for the first pass and it was pretty nice. I dialed it down to 4 for the 2nd pass and 2.5 for the third and pick up passes. Then I dialed it down further to a 1.5 for under the nose trimming (I need lawnmower blades in that region!) and had one of my best 5 shaves ever with a Futur. No cuts and BBS all the way! I think the one difference in this shave is I used the least pressure I ever had for setting 6 and the future passes. It's taken me close to 2 years, but I think I've finally mastered the Futur!
SERIOUS COMPLAINT: Now look here Paul when I watch a show with Brucie I EXPECT him to say "nice to see you, to see you..... when I watch you with a Merkur Futur I expect you to remind us that you could put a piece of card in it and still get a good shave BUT not once!!!! 😢😢😀

The Futur at setting 1 or 2 seems to be smooth for me in comparison to my R41. Still, I cannot shave ATG with either.

I've just ordered a Gillette blue tip razor, which may be the polar opposite of the Merkur Futur, particularly on the latter's number six setting.

I think it would depend on the beard first, how coarse and thick it is, around a months growth probably, maybe more in some cases...cheers Garry.
