  • Does the OT connection between wells and marriage shed light on Christ’s conversation with the woman at the well in John 4? What were the similarities and dissimilarities between Samaritans and Jews? What does the Greek verb “have [no] dealings with” imply? What can we say about the woman’s multiple marriages? What is “living water,” both literally and metaphorically? How is worship of the Father in spirit and truth a worship of the Trinity? These and other questions on John 4, Chad Bird will address in this week’s video in Reading the Gospels through Hebrew Eyes.

Can we also say that - for whatever reason - the woman had six men before and she was incomplete? Jesus, however, is the one to complete her and he is the completion we need as the bride of Christ. Just as in the genealogy of Matthew we see six sets of seven, in Jesus we find Messiah, the seventh seven. (Insert Jerry McGuire "You complete me!" reference here.)

Hi Chad. Thanks for another great teaching.
I was wondering if the mention of Jacob and the well could be referencing Jacob's blessing of Joseph (who is a typology of Jesus) in Gen 49:22 "Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall:".....and the running over the wall was a reference to the divide between Jews and Samaritans.
Also, whether the water in the well and the woman having had 5 husbands and the one she was with was not her husband was a reference to Prov 5:15 "Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well."....which in the context in Prov 5 is about fidelity in marriage.

I noticed Jesus mentioned that He had to be lifted up just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so that everyone who believes will have eternal life (a powerful parallel). Numbers 21:8-9. The next event after the people were healed in Numbers 21 is that they were given water from a well. I don’t want to take away from the spiritual parallels you mentioned, but there seems to be a parallel here as well. The people rejoiced over God’s provision, and the response of the Samaritans would seem to be similar because they believed in him.

I believe the story- (believe it or not) is actually talking about a _sine wave_ (serpent) as it were charted on a graph (the cross). This is revelatory, of course, as applied math wouldn't be developed until thousands of years later.
If people are living in Sin (sine)... it means there's a discrepancy between 2 categories, for example their Words vs their Deeds... or an unresolved conflict between 2 personal beliefs. It creates an imbalnce with creates psychic disturbance.

    • @dyrtyharry6789
      @dyrtyharry6789 21 день назад

As it relates to this story, you have category A:The Jews, which regarded themselves highly vs category B: The Samarians, which were an oppressed and poorly regarded minority...
The woman may have had 5 prior husbands (a sinner by christian standards) but was humble and accomodating, so her "sins" would theoretically be forgiven through Christ... while the unrighteous and haughty (category A's) led by the Pharisees would eventually be exiled by 70 AD.

Thanks for this teaching. One more thing to note is that by situating this encounter by Joseph’s well, Jesus was probably identifying with Messiah Son of Joseph. The Samaritans, being part Ephraimite might have been looking forward to Son of Joseph rather than Son of David. Which might explain why Jesus explicitly confirmed his identity to Samaritans but not to the Judeans who were expecting Son of David.

A lot of the Christians in my circle use that story as an excuse that God is okay with a divorce and remarriage while the first spouse is alive. Maybe you could do a video explaining the significance of her having five husbands. They also use the verse about if the unbeliever departs to let him go and be at peace. They seem to ignore all the other scriptures and cling to those too.

    • @dyrtyharry6789

Yup theres a great verse for that: Matthew 7:1
It's amazing how even today, 66.6% of christians _still_ can't get it right...

    • @dyrtyharry6789
      @dyrtyharry6789 21 день назад

In Matthew 19:9 where Jesus condemns divorce and equates remarriage to adultery... the actual reason (that no one noticed) is intimated 4 verses later... as it relates to the toll the children of divorced couples bear, especially when the breakup is messy and the courts are involved.
But of course, this depends on the parents and again Matthew 7:1 is ALWAYS in force and supercedes all other laws.🙂

Can I ask how we think she resolved the not being married thing? Before I found Jesus I had a family with a man that I'm not married to. After finding Jesus I was convicted of premarital sex and decided not to, but he did it anyways because he doesn't think it's a sin. He thinks God already considers us married. It's caused many issues and his lifestyle doesn't align with mine anymore. He says he is Christian now too but we are still unequally yoked. Idk what to do.

The woman at the well is a symbol or "type" for the House of Israel or the Northern Kingdom.
They were originally married to God at Mt Siani, then taken by the Assyrians then the Meado/Persians, followed by the Babylonians then the Greeks, thats 5 husbands, and now Rome is there.
Yeshuah's objective is to restore the two Kingdoms into one. The question is after having divorced them, how can He remarry her again, or renew the covenant? By giving his life on the cross and the "new" reserected man can marry her.
    Greetings from South Africa.

I’ve looked into it fully. And I know Greek and Hebrew.
The name “Jesus” in Greek is Ἰησοῦς, which is derived from the Hebrew name Yehoshua, which in English is written as Joshua. In later Biblical Hebrew, it was often shortened to Yeshua.
If you follow the historical development of the name across the centuries, we thus get:
      -early biblical Hebrew: Yehoshua (=Joshua)
-later biblical Hebrew: Yeshua (or Y’shua)
      -Greek: Iēsous
      -Latin: Iesus
      -Modern English: Jesus
So any insistence that we do not call him Jesus is linguistic legalism.

Shalmanezer, king of Assyria carried away Israel to Assyria because they had been rejected by God for their unrepentant idolatry practices And Kings 17, and relocated 5 different tribes of Assyrians with 5 different idolatry practices in Samaria. 2 kings 17:24-41.
This is the reason why Jews do not have anything to do with the Samaritans of their day, because they believed that they were strangers living in the promised land.
The Samaritan woman at the well who was met by Jesus Christ because of her faith in the God of the Jews. She had allied herself, like Ruth, to Jacob, by saying "our father Jacob...Our fathers worshipped..." John 4:1-26.
She, in her quest for the True God, went through all the 5 gods of Assyria, and now found about the God of Israel.
Just then, she met Jesus who then told her the good news of salvation by faith in the One that God has sent to restore Israel.
Because of her faith in Him, she not only got saved, but became the evangelist to proclaim this good news to all Samaritans.
The idols and gods are likened to having a marital relationship, thus, she had been with 5 husbands and now even the 6th wasn't what she was looking for.
This meant that the mystery which was hidden right from the beginning- Jews and Gentiles would be saved, was fulfilled.
Jesus was indeed sent only to the lost sheep of Israel, but He also ministered to anyone who would simply have the faith of Abraham and believe God through Christ Jesus, who was sent to seek and save lost Israel.
The Samaritan woman was one of the 3 gentiles ministered to by Jesus Christ for their faith in Him:
The Roman Centurion, the Samaritan woman at the well and the Canaanite woman.
He didn't acknowledge the Greek gentiles when they came to seek Him because He had to pay the wages for their sins before they could finally be included in salvation work of Jesus Christ by grace, through faith in His sacrificial death, burial and resurrection John 12:32.
Finally, by the Holy Spirit, Philip was sent to include Jew Proselytes, through the Ethiopian Eunuch, then the Apostle Paul was sent to the rest of the world.

SAMARITAN WOMAN WAS A VICTIM OF HER FIANCE'S BATTLE AGAINST THE POWER OF DARKNESS.
There's a God's law of creation, if a male child is born then equally a female child is also be born correspondingly, they're born for each other bearing the image of God with one another, so if a man becomes young & apply this law in search of his fiance then he would absolutely come to know where she has been born, her religion, her name, her language, her culture etc., and in this Godly life project, there's no place for sin or sexuality or desire for lustful thoughts, caste, creed, culture, language, religion, race.
God's Spirit indwelled man can send his DNA in the form of an invisible Spirit & impregnate his wife without physically touching her. This should've been a way for procreation in the beginning but it was lost, and instead the sinful way, meaning sexual relationships was imposed or introduced by an adversary the devil 😈 so as to run this world 🌍.
However, an adversary the devil is keen and don't allow Godly life project in this world 🌍, so he takes action to destroy either of one who strive for a Godly life, most probably the devil who have his disciples of wicked guys & motivate them who would take an action to deceive the concerned female during the days of her youth & led her into a prostitution, and it would be known to the concerned male who have been born for her, and prompt him to mental agony but when an appropriate time comes both of them meet in person, the female doesn't know to whom she meets, it's just like that for her, and leave him but the male does know to whom he meets & knew that his fiance has become a victim of his battle against the power of darkness the devil, and no mistake in her part, so it is a great deal for him to meet her with great LOVE, but end up with a great lose of his life by losing her. John 4 has this story back in the 1st century, Samaritan woman was a victim and born as a wife of the Messiah but destroyed by an adversary the devil 😈.
This world survives the way it is to this day, however this world would come to an end through one who have discovered the God's theory of creation and apply, and he may lose his life and he can't try to build his life with some other female since someother woman has been born for some other male, thus he can't, and in this kind of situation God would take an action to bring this world to an end, and in this reason the world affairs like politics, science, economy, tecnology, wars, natural calamities etc., are playing a role as a battle between Light and darkness which would come to an end & God shall return so as to reward him an everlasting life, creating the New Heaven and New Earth & throwing an adversary along with his wicked guys to the lake of fire 🔥.
Conclusion: Men have discovered the physical laws that govern our universe, but the purpose they have failed to figure out, and still searching, this tiny message may an eye opener for those who still search for answers of life tough questions. This world was begun with one couple and in same manner this world 🌍 would come to an end with one couple who have been in the creation theory of God, so this world would come to the climax within 3.5 years from now as of May 2024.

We do not live on the edge of time by chance, our souls have lived on the edge of time before, we just don't remember past lives or the in-between, just as the woman did not remember her five husbands.
