The secret to being as good as Paul Gilbert is just two simple things:
    1) Having every song ever written playing simultaneously in your head and being able to pick out the part you want and instantly transcribe it to guitar.
    2) Level 99 happiness and enthusiasm.
    Easy peasy.

    • @McGuire40695

    • @TonyTheBassPlayer1

Straight up fact; Why Paul is as good as he is, is directly because of the support he got from his parents. His father built his amps and guitars, his name is George. George built a lot of amps for local guys. I have one. His Dad took him to the Randy Rhodes seminar at a local guitar shop, 2 months before he died. Ozzy heard about him, I assume through Randy. George also had sent a cassette of Paul to Mike Varney the year before and Mike called him Randy Rhodes Jr. Ozzy got Pauls contact info from Mike and called the Gilbert residence, saying he wanted to hire Paul when he was 16 and luckily George said absolutely not he's too young. And that probably saved Paul's career and maybe his life, LOL. Paul was so mad about that but his Dad sent him out to that school instead and well, the rest is history. But his parents were the reason he became what he is.

Paul Gilbert is magical. He's so insanely skilled yet humble and there's a child-like passion to him when he talks about music.
He's also amazingly articulate with what he wants to convey in his teachings and his playing. He's got a bluesman's soul, a popstar's heart and the skill of a virtuoso. He's the 80s equivalent of John Mayer with his unabashed love of pop music offset with monster guitar chops.

T = Toto = Africa). It’s so much fun to see how fast they come out with the riff.

31:28 That story about "being bad at something" hit really close to home.
Up to 6th grade I basically had straigt A's in all subjects, my worst subject being sport where I had like a B minus, so when we got to pick a new subject in 7th grade I choose some science based class since I was really into that (and still am), but my main class teacher told my parents that I had to get into a class that was really really hard for me because I was so used to sailing through school without ever havint to learn much for tests.
So they enrolled me into latin-class and that's where I received my first ever D and I was devestated and momentarily didn't want to go to school any longer, but it taught me a very valuable lesson in the long run.

Hey, I'm 56 and I always was a music disciple. I remember stomping all over the place to the sound of music when I was only two. My first living memory is me sort of sleeping in my crib ( couple of months I guess ) listening to the music playing in the room I was in, alone. For a long time now, many people look at me funny for still loving all kinds of music so much, as if that phase should precisely have been over for a while when in fact, it never was a phase, at least not for me. I Watch and listen to people like Paul here and I understand I'm not a lone freak. This guy is as happy talking and playing music as a kid left alone in a closed candy store. I love the man ! It is such a treat to listen to his stories and see the sparkles in his eyes.. Thank God for music !! Bless you Paul.

My band gets to perform as direct support for Mr. Big in June, and I won't be able to sleep until then knowing that I'll be sharing the stage with and watching one of my all time heroes do what he does best (and if I'm lucky, get to pick his brain a bit)! Great interview as always, I could listen to Paul and The Captain go on for days. This one came at just the right time. (:

Coolest and down to earth virtuoso there is. He remained a true music and guitar fan. Talks about other guitar heroes like a young kid would do. While in the same time he is one of the gratest.

“Studying with the teacher” such an important statement that Paul said. Playing guitar and learning how to be better can be done while playing with other people. Seems like common sense, but it’s becoming a lost art-form. And it’s proven true in the next segment when Paul shows CPT how to strum up and down aggressively! 👏 such a good episode! Thank guys for this!
