The reason that statement was made is basically because they have the same shape. It's like when they say is a hot dog a sandwich? Is cereal just cold soup? Those types of questions. Yes, muffins and cupcakes are similar because of their shape mainly. The batters have some similarities, but they're different.

When I was a baker, our recipe for muffins was slightly different from cupcakes. Cupcakes are a cake batter - light and fluffy. Muffins are a sweet bread batter - denser. (Think banana bread or pumpkin bread) so, both sweet, but muffins are more dense. But you could technically interchange them, if you prefer a denser or fluffier cake. :)

Cup cakes and muffins r different. One is a cake and one is a quick bread. They r also made differently. Muffins can be made in minutes but u have to be gentle when combining the wet and dry ingredients. A typical cake use what is called a creaming method. Where butter and sugar is creamed until light and fuffy then the other ingredients or added.

as a baker stay, i just wanna clear up that cupcakes and muffins may look similar but they're not the same thing. texture wise, muffins are more dense and bready than cupcakes that are soft fluffy, spongy and cakey. cupcakes are sweeter too compared to muffins, and muffins do not have icing on top. 😊

No cupcakes and Muffins are not the same thing. Cupcakes are not just sweeter, the texture is different because they are made with cake batter. Muffins are almost always sweetbreads. There are a few muffins that can be considered cakes; like the really sweet ones made from carrot cake or coffee cake recipes. There are no cupcakes that I would consider a muffin.
