MLS teams should participate in the US open cup 🏆, especially since it gets you a spot in the CONCACAF Champions Cup tournament. It's foolish for them, if I'm an owner, I want to take every chance that my team has to win a trophy I don't care what tournament it is. I'll add it to my collection and on the display case.

its always been mixed about MLS teams taking it seriously, with some only doing so if they do make it to further rounds. You would routinely see B teams as a lower league team playing against MLS teams. My team in NASL played Chivas, La Galaxy, FC Dallas multiple times in back to back years. It was not taken seriously by them until that final year. The reality is that this decision to change it was likely done because Messi is in the league. He absolutely would not be playing in US Open Cup games, but it wouldn't stop the hype from building and people selling tickets for $1k and then him not even being on the bench. Similar happened when we played LA Galaxy and we sold out the stadium for the chance to see David Beckham, who never even traveled with the team all 3 years. Who is the owner of Inter Miami? Exactly. Even the final year the Galaxy brought Donovan, Zardes, Juninho, Keane and we still beat them 1-0 and despite all those other stars coming Beckham did not. Messi would not. Tickets would resale at absurd prices. This is why the change was done.

I'm an RSL fan currently living in New Mexico. I came into watching this video really wanting to defend my team and their loss in that Open Cup game, but came out with a different perspective.
    Original defense of RSL:
    - They brought mostly their "B" team, including some players that you almost never see getting a chance in league play.
    - This tournament isn't as big of a deal as it used to be.
Coming into it now, I'll completely remove that second defense. Maybe management did see it that way, and if they did then that is an unfortunate mistake. The Open Cup is an opportunity to build US soccer to be bigger and better. That's what competition does.
The first defense I still stand by, because RSL is an incredible team this year, and deserve to be on top in the West with how they are playing. However, I think it is almost less of a defense and more of a credit to USL and the talent there despite it not being as "high profile" as MLS right now.
I think if RSL had fielded their typical first team the whole game then the result would have been different. But the fact that they didn't is a credit to USL and New Mexico United, because it shows that they were underestimated, and that maybe the gap between the leagues isn't as large as the Houston coach wants to make it seem.
As an RSL fan that is riding a high, with my team sitting comfortably on top of the western conference... Great work, New Mexico! You're my USL team, and I hope you win on Tuesday to continue showing that USL deserves more credit!

More creative solutions are needed. I think they need to open up two weekends like they do in England. round of 64, 32 and 16 are played on Wed, Sat, and Wed. Then another weekend the quarters, semi and final on Wed, Sat, and Wed. That second weekend, you can have MLS matches scheduled but those in the semis will be rescheduled. It’s not that hard to find a solution and market this better

I will say some of the players RSL fielded were closers to a C team but on average it would be a B team. It was embarrassing as an RSL supporter but I’m always rooting for USL teams to do well cause it makes for a great story. Props to NMU for actually showing up.

I agree with him. The stance by the MLS is another example of stupidity in high positions in USA soccer. The US Open Cup is amazing because it shows that athletes are athletes and on any given day the underdog can be victorious. It makes for high drama a great viewing; it only adds to the sport.

I hope there's a path to a first division USL league, which at this time would require 12 clubs to start with that all have a 15k seat stadium to play in. I don't know if pro/rel is the way to go at the top tier, but I do think it can make sense at the semi pro and amateur level. For me personally, the best rivalry that USL can look forward to is with the CPL. They should set up a tournament, probably in the winter. But it's hosted in the south and southwest. That should be the thing that USL works on pursuing immediately.

Interesting. NM’s owner is one owner who’s having doubts about the USL pro/rel proposal which is understandable… USL’s idea is a closed pro/rel system. Yes USL can produce MLS-caliber players… but the issue is MLS is only interested in young Diego Luna types… it’s the mid 20’s players they don’t scout because the lack of sell-on potential.

The US Open Cup now is a perfect example of what football in the US is: a sport they care so little about that they call it “soccer”
The fact they put their reserve teams in a major tournament with
a Concachampions spot at stake is also beyond me 🤦‍♂️🙄
This is why I think Liga MX is better, and show more passion and motivation. Even though we see the Leagues Cup as a mediocre tournament, we still put our A team on the field because there is a spot for Concachampions. US top tier teams are throwing away a opportunity with the Open Cup

you are a veritable jackass, considering your commentary about usage of "Soccer".. I don't suppose you are even aware that it was the BRITS who coined the term, not Americans. Shortened from Association Football. THen the ENglish decided they wanted to be like other Europeans and switched to football.. Here in North America between various pro leagues in both USA and Canada, calling it "football" would make no sense and just confuse things.
Coincidentally it isnt just USA/CAN taht call it soccer either. Even the Italians use a different name: Calcio.

😢 why won't the MLS give away free advertising? It's just not fair that the biggest and best league in America won't publicize leagues with owners that didn't support MLS at its inception and still deride the league at every opportunity.
