I was there. In the studio. I was taken by surprise as people starting applauding, as I clearly had left planet earth and was somewhere else. On Mars? To this day I get goosebumps.

I always feel somewhat protective when artists cover a song that have a special place. But Aurora completely did this song justice and more.

That's a hell of a analysis. Have seen a lot of reactions to this one, many great ones, but this is THE one that really points out what an incredible achievement this is , her doing this masterpiece of a song her own. And she is completely self taught!! Hats off to you too. Can't wait until your next reaction - she deserves you!!

Jeff in life an artist comes along that stands head and shoulders above anyone else for me Aurora is one such artist at my age of 65 I have seen numerous artists live in concert though out the years including Bowie back in the 70s but I can honestly say that after seeing Aurora live twice now she has moved me more than anyone as a songwriter she is outstanding writing songs from the age of 9 producing her first album in her early teens with songs of such depth of lyrics for one so young,but then you look into her background as a young girl listening to the music of Bob Dylan and Lenard Cohan both great wordsmiths in the art of music you start to understand the quality of her music for me she is so special a girl who knows what the true essence of the art of music is and to think that she never wanted to be an artist but took on board the wise words of her mother who told that her music could be a medicine for the whole world,what a wise mother she is and we are so blessed to have her music in our lives.Genius ❤️🍎❤️🍎❤️
This comment is outstanding! I couldn't agree more, John. I, too, saw Bowie live a few times but it was in the 80s. I have yet to see Aurora live in person but I'd like to,. Beautifully written, I don't know if the older you get, I'm 62...the more your soul resonates with certain lyrics and tunes...like you know the truth...you've been there many times...and here comes this beautiful creature and pierces into your soul, and your heart just opens up...she is a healer.

Pretty sure Bowie was one of her favourites
This was my introduction to Aurora a couple months ago, and I haven’t hardly been able to listen to anything else since. Her voice is so hauntingly beautiful and unique!
Nearly a year ago, this was the first Aurora song that I heard found. It was a magical moment for me. She has become a bit of an obsession. Her songs are soul healing, and it needed healing this year.
I right with you Jeffery! Healing has been so needed for me as well. To me she is an absolute enigma!
Her voice is, as always, beautiful and the (deliberately slightly flat??) Rhodes is the perfect accompaniment.
What a combination. There is a delicate, human, vulnerable yet strong quality to it all that just pierces me.
Intriguing vocals, nice that she didn't embellish vocal in the crucial areas of Bowie's epic composition
This very song meant very much to me when I heard original Bowie-and when I stumbled across this version years ago I am not ashamed to say it brought a tear to my eye and made me an instant fan of this girl. With most songs it is a case of "wanting to hear" but this one is a case of "needing to hear". I am so glad you found it too and hope it brings you the same comfort it has brought me.

With Aurora’s version of Life on Mars, it had me crying after the first minute. What was this?! The intensity already in the way it was filmed, with the light and dark contrast, so dramatic and yet so soft…and it continued throughout: the contrasts between drama and fierceness, and softness, simplicity, vulnerability.
She showed me a new, haunting beauty in this song. That bass note in 3:20…taking her vocals and the keys up high at the end (so angelic, what an effect), endlessly surprising-. I thought I knew this song so well, -and here it gets gently turned upside down, stripped bare and it’s beauty revealed in a totally new way. Lots of open space in there, and exposing the beauty in the melody and harmonies in a radical new way. I think she puts the spotlight on the transition from one chord to the next, the effect that can have….
Aurora, a real story teller. And as you were saying, the courage it would take to cover such a well known song, with just a voice and keys! Oh my god, pure gold ⭐️🌔⭐️

Thank you for a great reaction. The very interesting thing about this performance is that at this point in her career Aurora was scared petrified every time she went on stage, to the point she thought she might actually die behind stage. A fun fact she does not have a stylist, her fashion choices are all her won and she is known for making a lot of her own outfits and accessary. For instance, she made her outfit and the props in the The Seed mv, her headpiece in the Exist For Love mv (it was during quarantine, she cut off all the beads on every piece of clothing she owned) and she hand painted all the masks in the Cure For Me mv. She often plays several of the instruments in studio version of her songs and often also produce them.

@@branscombeR you are of course entitled to your own opinions, but I stand by my comment. But I will explain why.
In the interview on Norwegian TV you referenced Victoria talks about how honoured she felt when Aurora for the first time asked her to make an outfit to be used in one of her music videos (the sheep bolero in Queendom) (the sheep is still alive)).
She wrote on her Instagram about how she gathered pearls form her clothing to make the headdress for the Exist For Love mv and how she and her sister made the outfit together from dissemble other clothes and a bit of fabric she already had. This was done during quarantine and she lived with Miranda at the time so Victoria was not involved with that outfit at all, but she was present at the mv filming and she took the official single photos.
In the red-carpet interview at the Oscar’s, she answers that she and Victoria made the outfit together.
I can’t remember the interview now, but Aurora has several times said that it is a misconception that Victoria makes all her clothes. In one interview she seemed irked about it. She actually makes a most of her own outfits and have done so since was a teenager. In the Nothing is Eternal documentary Miranda and Victoria talked about how scared they were for Aurora when she was to start high school, one of their worries was how extremely weird she dressed. Aurora is known to be a regular customer at Paulina Vintage Boutique in Bergen (they post on their Instagram) where she buys clothes to then redesign them.
Most of the time Aurora does her own makeup, but yes, no other makeup artist than Miranda gets to do her makeup. But Miranda has her own life and career and cant always follow Aurora. Miranda does Aurora’s makeup when she can, but as shown in the documentary Once Aurora, Miranda was not on tour with her.
In a 2016 Vouge interview she explains how she only uses two beauty products are necessary for a seamless show: the first is Giorgio Armani’s luminous silk foundation, which she wears at the recommendation from Miranda to hide her naturally rosy flush. “While I’m on stage I want to keep that a secret,” she says. The second is a bottle of dry shampoo. Obviously, she has added to that over the year with her stripes and dots, and in a Like A Version interview she explained that she used lipstick for the petals. In the P3 interview done when she performed Rasputin and Cure For Me she explained that she used super glue to secure the pearls to her face and that she had glued her fingers stuck.
On Instagram she explained that she and her camera man made the The Seed mv alone, just the two of them in a warehouse in England. They made the props and Aurora bought the red slippers for a couple of pounds the day before. She wore clothes she had used before and did her own makeup.
I could go on, but I will stop here. Sorry for the rant.
As the saying goes, she made this one her own. Live, always her best. The best version I have heard, including Bowie.

100% Authentic. AURORA is as genuine an artist as they come. Recommend AURORA Exist for Love live in Bergen (full string accompaniment) and her cover Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat.
As blind luck would have it, I happened to zap to NRK late one evening, just in time to catch this perfomance as it was first broadcast. When the credits rolled, I knew I had just experienced something epic. Been a fan ever since.

I find AURoRA so so refreshing, and her style so organic, it's like she's fused with the instrument, both piano and her voice. She EMANATES the sound, draws us in. totally captivating.
There are 2 extremely good female artists from Norway, that's my favorites at this point in time. Both starts and ends with the letter "A"
AURoRA and ANGELina Jordan. Both so extremely different in feature and expression, and still so exquisite. 🎼🎶🎵
And we are so so lucky to be able to follow them so closely in this day'n age of facetime and social media. to quote an AURoRA song "I'm so LUCKY to be alive"... to experience this real time.

Ahh thank you for a good reaction, I'm very late but I love it! She's just a fairy that expresses her feelings a lot in her gestures and through her eyes. If she didn't play the piano you would've seen her flow with the song hehe, its her own self and I love that side!

I finally listened to it! You are spot on with your analysis. It is so difficult to focus on playing an instrument and singing with good technique at the same time. Besides the super unique timbre of her voice, one of the things that sets her apart from many current artists is her pitch accuracy. You can’t hide poor intonation in an acoustic arrangement like this one. A common vocal issue is to go slightly flat on descending notes and her runs were perfection. And those glissandos….chef’s kiss! She has really great control. My only real negative would be her choice of phrasing in some places, but that’s just the voice teacher in me 😂 I love this arrangement. Thanks for telling me about it!

Great reaction. And yeah, Aurora is a literal genius who seems to always put her entire body/mind/soul into every performance. A hard agree on Lucky at Nidarosdomen. An almost religious experience that one is.

If you like Aurora, do yourself a big favour and sit down in a darkened room with a 'Don't Disturb' sign on the door and a BIG HD screen with surround sound turned up to 11 ... the whole concert is life-changing! I also would recommend Lucky live from Nidarosdomen (it is always mind blowing that this song was written by Aurora when she was 9, even if probably polished later) and All is Soft Inside live from KEXP 2018 :).

The complete concert is a Masterpiece.
To think there are arguably two better Aurora versions of this cover (Howard Stern and Nidarosdomen), shows just how incredible she is. I can't decide which is my favorite, because all three are great in their own way.
If you're a fan of Aurora, you'd probably also like Eivør. I would recommend starting with Falling Free (Live at the Old Theater in Torshavn), which is absolutely gorgeous from start to finish. Goosebumps all the way.

A true masterpiece of cover 😘
speaking about aurora one has to mention susanne sundfor first, because she is a role model for all this younger artists like aurora, sigrid and so on. she is an incredible songwriter, composer and her voice is just delicate. one of her most outstanding pieces is "when the lord" and since aurora is delivering here this wonderful stripped down song, which is in my opinion one of her best perfomances at all together with "it happend quiet" live at the current, i'd like to reccomend susanne sundfors "the brothel" live at cigalle.

I enjoyed the reaction, especially from a seasoned musician. If you want to review another cover of a classic song, search for her cover of Leonard Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat she did about four years ago. It's another great interpretation that she makes her own.
