    Thank you for clarifying that sit stay and down or not tricks but essential behaviors. Redefining descriptive words is a true sign of an expert. You keep on clicking, and teaching REAL tricks. I'll just keep my dog at my side to experience, well, everything.

    I had a big male for 15 years - one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was just , simply put, my best friend. Most loyal, perceptive dog, I've ever known. He knew I was grieving upon the news of my father's death & quietly kept me company, when normally he would be on my bed (a typical Ridgeback "move") and would lay by my side the whole time. I once went over seas for 2 weeks, and left him w/my mother. When I got back he rushed to me and growled as he tried to jump up and greet me w/ licks etc..Basically, he was pissed I had left him so long, but was also very happy to see me again. They basically are very very intelligent dogs.

    great clip and explanations. its so much easier for people to relax around big dogs when they can tell the owner has control, and a good sit/drop or shake hands is a quick way to do that. Savannah is a beautiful attentive girl

    I came to this video furious thinking that someone had tried training dogs on expresso coffee. I was pleasantly surprised. I love my ridgeback.

    I agree, I don't use clickers and my Ridgebacks do very well with treats, verbal and hand commands.

    Very informative. I have had Malamutes my entire adult life, and grew up with GSDs, but in the future would still like a formidable but non aggressive dog that I can feel is safe to take on sparsely traveled mountainous hikes (in New England coy-wolf country) as well as dog filled beach hikes. Less shedding would be nice, for a change. Since I want to adopt, which makes socialization more challenging, and the shedding machines like the Malamutes are gender aggressive, and GSDs are quite protective, would Ridgeback be a good option?

    They ARE stubborn - but that just means they have to have a REASON to do something :D The reason ? Positive reinforcement and love !
    Having said that, mine is an absolute pansy :( haha

    This is how little you know about actually training a dog. Clickers are AWESOME for shaping new behaviors and letting the dog know when they did something right. The trick is timing and that's the number one thing you have to get down regardless of the training method. My Ridgeback will do anything for food and I use that for training him as well as positive reinforcement and a clicker. Sit, stay, etc. are NOT tricks...they are essential behaviors for your dog to know for so many reasons.

    My RR can do Algebra if she knows liverwurst is coming. This breed needs POSITIVE TRAINING ONLY and this is well documented. That being said this is a hound. It is not a Lab, nor any kind of herding dog that works closely with man and taking directions . Hounds work in the field many times on their own making life and death decisions with dangerous animals. IMHO they can do all of this but why? They don't play fetch, some, mine included, won't lure course. Being with you makes them happy.

    Hi, do Rhodesians have good sniffing abilities compared to other hound breeds like Blue tick......?

    • @BiscuitsButtered
      @BiscuitsButtered 4 года назад +1

      RR’s are sight hounds. They use their superb vision to track and obtain prey.

    • @D_F_L_
      @D_F_L_ 4 года назад +1

      Not necessarily true. Although classified in the sight Hound group, there are Some bloodlines that have bloodhounds in them so depending on the pedigree, some use their nose, some use their sights. Other breeds mixed in with the original ridgebacks by the Dutch were Great Danes and Greyhounds.

    My ridgeback dog is 1year and 4month old ...is it possible to train him?

    • @goaliemojo4310
      @goaliemojo4310 5 лет назад

      Yes! 16 months is still a puppy, but you better get to it, slow at first like the awesome trainer in this video suggested. Getting help at a local petstore that has cheaper training programs is a good way to start, but if no time or money for that is available, just keep watching these different training videos across RUclips and work with your dog everyday. These are the best dogs in the world and partly come from really old breeds in Africa that had been documented as far back as images in Egyptian temples, B.C..... Worth the work!

    Ridgebacks are simply more dominant than some other dogs. They are not popular here in the US, thank God or there would be a ton in shelters as most American's don't have a clue what they are doing when it comes to training dogs. RR's take more patience and time than say....Golden Retrievers or Labs, two of the most popular dogs in the US. They also require consistency, regular work and exercise.

    • @beauhess3719
      @beauhess3719 7 лет назад

      I disagree. Labradors can be one of the most difficult dogs to work with. They take TONS of patience, exercise and time.

  • @cat5fan
    @cat5fan 12 лет назад

    Agreed! Pointless tricks! I'm sure that is what my RR girl thinks. No fetch, once chased the lure course then determined it was fake and no more. She loved pulling me on the skateboard because she was going fast with daddy. Now older, no more pulling just side by side.

    I hope that it will not be so popular rase, because than a lot of not convenient peopel for that dog take them and than they end in a dog shelter

  • @jakeleak
    @jakeleak 12 лет назад

    sit, stay, down are all good and very useful tricks. However, clickers suck. The most important part is to love the shit out of your dog. Spend time with them, give them exercise, play games, introduce them to different situations. Get a dog that suits your life style. Don't get a ridgey if your a couch potato or a workaholic.
    My ridgeback is the first dog I've ever had and at 3 years old, she's one of the best things in my life.
