- The Military Aviation Museum's Bf-109 prepping for the 2016 Warbirds Over the Beach Airshow. This is actually a Spanish Hispano HA1112 Buchon restored with a Daimler-Benz DB 605 to an approximation of the Bf-109G-4. This was her first day of flying in the US. They didn't do a real fly-by, unfortunately.
3/27/3021 adding info for clarity: the Buchons were built in Spain in 1954 with surplus Rolls Royce Merlin engines. The plane had an intake under the propeller and the engine was upright, so the exhaust pipes sat higher in the nose. The nose of this aircraft was reconstructed for the DB 605 engine and to appear as a Bf-109. The engine for this conversion was from a Bf-110 that was interned by the Swiss after an emergency landing in Dubendorf, Switzerland in 1944.
The Military Aviation Museum is in Virginia Beach, Virginia

German equipment has always been very well made, and built to last. A tribute to their engineering and manfacturing techniques.
Actually it was built in Spain, it is not a German Messerschmitt it is a Spanish Hispano HA1112 Buchon tarted up to look like a Messerschmitt.
Yeah tell that to the Tiger mechanics.
But over-complicated
But no range. The P-51 could fly from England to Germany and back. That being said the 109 is still my favorite German WWII fighter.
@@milanvondrich9749 it was over-engineered, but still very well made. the problem was that later during the war, there were no spare parts available anymore, so when they would break down that would be the end of them. that's why people remember them as unreliable, while it wasn't that bad in reality
the startup sound is simply amazing, i could replay it 1000 times and it wouldn't get old
It's better in person. I'm lucky to live so close to the museum

Gorgeous fighter aircraft and love the Daimler Benz sound.
its like it has dominance on the airfield. legendary fighter. you would dread seeing one of these and your tail
Me109 had more kills than any other plane in history,,I think FW190 was second biggest scorer in kills
This and the P40....the very definition of what a "fighter" should look like. Beautiful restoration!
Don't forget the Spitfire
Magnificent restoration & conversion from the Buchon. Amazing that there was a DB605 available !
_You know it was built by the Germans when it was still working after 80 years!_
_The demonic howling of the Daimler-Benz engine makes me goosebumps!_
_Messerschmitt Bf 109 is the deadliest fighter of all time!_
Not quite true. The Spitfire’s agility paid off in the Battle of Britain especially over home turf where it only took 35 minutes to rearm and refuel.A very different story for the 109 which had to fly back and forth to France with only about 10 mins combat time. This was one of the reasons why the RAF’s Hurricanes were able able to take out Luftwaffe bombers so effectively while the Spitfires dealt with the 109’s.Later on in the war the FW 190 proved a serious worry to the RAF and it took quite while before later Spitfire marques could deal with it together with the superlative Mustang from the USAF.
1:23-1:30 that sound is simply astonishing. I love the Daimler Benz 605

Yes, amazing. After my 1st pilot license I saw a Spitfire at airport Münster-Osnabrück. It was also great and the old pilot looked in his overall exactly like pilots of WW2 !!!
Apart from the lovely noise I like the way the plane jumps up and says, 'I'm ready for anything' when it starts up. Nice.

Nice how you captured the crew priming the cylinders with fuel and hearing the high inertia starter winding up the flywheel.
Wow! What a nice 109. This thing sounds like an absolute brute. You guys put a big cam in there. Must be a blast&a half to fly. Great show&sound. Thank you so much. I noticed that when first fired up-it wants to leap off right then.
+Craig Pennington Original cam, just that the DB-605 had an aggressive cam and sounds mean. Their engine was actually built after the war because it is a license-built example made by Volvo in Sweden. (Sweden manufactured a few for their own military use for a little while.)
@@FiveCentsPlease The DB605 in this Bf109 is an original from a Bf110 that landed in Switzerland near the end of the war.
@@howardman3926 Thanks for the info. One of the DB-605s at Meier had the Trollhättan Flygmotor badge instead of the Daimler-Benz mark, now I'm trying to remember which Bf-109 it ended up with. dms-cf-05.dimu.org/image/012uP1N86nst?dimension=1200x1200
@@FiveCentsPlease I think it's the Bf109 G-12 they have at Hangar10 there in Germany. How badass to get to be the person that goes out and flies this thing around to test it.
Nice to see that they’ve kept the swastika on the tail. Nice touch. That engine is in superb condition. It’s as if it was brand new. Beautiful.
Да ещё приятней осознавать как их сбивали Советские ассы!
Nothing will beat the sound of a DB 605 in my opinion. The low growl combined with that supercharger whistle. I take it they basically replaced the entire nose of the plane, since the buchon has a very different nose/engine design.
Buchons were just surplace 109 fuselages, with merlin engines fitted to them for the Spanish air force in the years immediately after the war. They used merlins because the DB 605's and the like were not easily supplied for parts whereas the merlin had them in there bucketload.
...the bf-109 had a nose job(?)
The sound of Carl Döenitz surrendering is much better in my mind....
Thank you for the true painting and symbols - and all the work of course.
Really great plane. Thank you for video.
I always felt a great relief after taxing off the runway in a tail wheel aircraft, The feeling must by times teen in a BF109.

@@obuvrk184 please articulate, as I am not sure what you meant to say?
Just curious, Michael, would you happen to be German?
Terrific. Thanks for posting. Interesting markings though. It has Gruppen Kommadore markings for I/JG3 but what does the '1' signify?
There was an article about the restoration by Luigino Caliaro published in the July 2016 issue of Aeroplane magazine. It states that the "The fighter has been painted in the markings of 'Black 1', the personal Bf 109G-4 of Gruppenkommandeur Hptm Klaus Quaet-Faslem from I./JG 3 'Udet' stationed in Germany around mid-1943." I guess commander's choice, then? The article is interesting in that it notes the restoration is partially based on a recoved G-4 that crashed in Russia in 1943, flown by Feldwebel Viktor Petermann (#19257).
As an aside, while the aircraft of an Iron Cross winner with 49 victories is more significant, I wish they would do some of these restorations as the original aircraft, especially when it was an actual combatant aircraft.
Thanks for the info. I'm inclined to agree with you. I prefer restorations in original markings if possible. Still, it wasn't long ago there were no airworthy '109s so I suppose we should be grateful really.

I waved to the pilot of one of these as he flew over my grandfather's garden in Kent! 1943?
Just curious, you waved to someone coming to bomb your village? I guess if you were a kid and innocent enough to think a smile and a wave might tempt him not to attack you...
@@goff9255 It was not a village. It was a house in farmland. The Messrschmidt 109 was not, as far as I know, a bomber. Of course there could have been the possibility of the fighter strafing civilians, but at the age of six I had no idea what was going on, except that it was more exciting than being stuck indoors. I would not have felt fear or a need to wave and ask the pilot not to shoot me. I do not know if there were instances of German fighter planes strafing civilians in England during the war; I have not heard of it. Bombing raids were carried out by bomber aircraft over London and other cities and occasionally the bombers would unload their remaining bombs on their way back to Germany if they saw a glimmer of light at night, There were strict blackout rules for all houses and cars.
Greetings Tim,
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Just as I figured, a young excited boy, I can fully appreciate that. Maybe you reminded him that there were nice friendly people he was attacking. Yes, I am aware that this is not a bomber, that being said, any nazi plane is one worth shooting down or staying out of British 'air space' .... too bad this one wasn't shot out of the sky...

4:05 narrow track between wheels, dangerous landing
Yeah, that could have easily ended very badly, with that bouncing around...
Indeed an excellent demonstration of the problem it had during its operational lifetime.
@@Verbindungs Yes. This problem was fixed on the FW190. The Bf 109's wings were not built to take the load of a landing, therefore they couldn't move the landing gears outwards. Hence why the landing gears are angled outwards to provide slightly more stability.
