You can make a translucent sphericon mold and put it on a growing apple, like they do for watermelon, pears, etc in Japan ! And you will get a sphericon apple without GMO 😉

Not that there's anything wrong with GMOs. But engineering a plant to produce a shape like this sounds incredibly difficult, if not impossible, so a sphericon mold is the way to go.

If you stuck the sphericon into the acetone bath assembled, I'd expect it to smooth and fuse the two halves together pretty well based on the giant gap and fillet it leaves when you do the parts separately. Maybe drill the tiniest hole into one of them and put a very, very thin strand of thread/wire though it by which to hang it from the container.
Could make an interesting, almost impossible looking result I'd recon.

    • @JohnEdwa

@Make Anything, Well, you obviously need to gather enough crazy tests for you acetone smoothing part 2 video first, so now you at least have one - fusing separately printed parts together :)

So, the acetone rolled up the edges? BIG difference in a fit of the two halves between 12:52 and 13:40 of the video.

Yep, it rounded the corners out a lot. I actually kinda like it, but it would be interesting to try smoothing it stuck together

I love the gloss but why wouldn't you assemble it before smoothing? If I'm correct, wouldn't it not produce such a dramatic seam, if not completely mend it? I'd love to know your thoughts!

okay, so it turns out that Fusion 360 is not as intuitive as it looks. I did manage to model a hexasphericon, though! I did have a few issues. One was that Fusion refused to see the tracks I cut out, at least for some of the sketches. Another was that instead of the rotate making a solid shape like you've got, I ended up with a shell.
Also still figuring out how it locks shapes to each other. Kept trying to make things really wonky on me, resizing lines and angles weird when all I wanted to change was the size of the track I'd cut.
But! For my first experience with the software, I think I did a reasonably good job! I dunno if what I just designed is actually printable or not, but it looks cool, and I can play with it more tomorrow. Or... later today, I guess. It was already after midnight when I started. Whooops...
And the reason I decided to install it tonight instead of going to sleep was because I wanted to better visualize what a penasphericon looked like... but since I had to follow this tutorial much more closely to figure out the controls, that one will have to wait. Perhaps tomorrow.

Hey @Make Anything I was modelling one of these hexasphericons for myself end everything was fine and dandy and fully constrained up until I added the extra curvature (fillets and the arcs in circular pattern). Do you have any tips on constraining these extra features?

I'd like to see how you modeled the "Geode" pattern in your other sphericon. Was it all designed in the same program? (I'm assuming something like fusion 360?) Or was this done after the original shape was created, in some post processing program like meshmixer?

    • @make.anything

You guessed it. Fusion for basic model, then spike tool in meshmixer for the crystals
