    I always thought it was interesting how some people like Askeladd from the beginning, but once they get to this episode their opinion of him drastically changes and he becomes “the villain”. He’s been committing atrocities throughout the first half of the season, but this time we actually get to see the process of a village raid. This series doesn’t try to sugarcoat anything and make the protagonists the antiheroes with a heart of gold, and I love it for that.

    This manga/anime goes straight to reality when it comes to ways of surviving with the means you have at hand (or those you know). In episode 10 of the anime, when Thorfinn wakes up from the nightmare about his father, in the manga he woke cause some Askeladd men were going to rape a women and she was screaming. Thorfinn just looked at them and walked by, since it meant nothing to achive his goal and it was normal to vikings. In this episode is part of the same. Ways to achieve your objectives while surviving, so moral doesn't actually mean nothing in those cases unless they get in the way.

      @@st.dantry5051 Steal the food without the villagers noticing? For an entire army? And do it to 2 villages? And then expecting the villagers to not report on them? Um...not a very realistic approach at all. Just saying. We're talking about providing food for around 100 ppl without letting info about their whereabouts leak. No matter how smart someone is, it is impractical of trying to fulfill those requirements while maintaining your morals/honor at the same time. Unfortunately, it was a dog eat dog world for their situation during those times. Sure, you can remain honorable, but then you'll be sacrificing yourself for others. I mean, kind of harsh, but look where honor and morals got Thors.

    • @clarev.377
      @clarev.377 4 года назад +3

      @@st.dantry5051 Um, yes they do. Again, stealing it without alerting anyone? Not possible. Just robbing them then? The villagers would then go notify others after they leave or during their stay. Not only that, Askeladd and them needed shelter as well, so they needed them out.
      They're in enemy territory. Okay, 1st of all, why in the world would Askeladd ever raid villages in Wales? His homeland?? They're in English territory in northern Mercia, trying to reach Gainsborough. To prove this, Bjorn even asked his buddies how to say "Give me all your food. I'll kill you" in English.
      It was common knowledge that Vikings/Danes were the ones pillaging and raiding villages back in the days as the villagers were even talking about them during dinner, so they definitely knew that they were Danes. One of the villagers also asked whether they were Danes. So yes, secrecy was necessary on enemy grounds. I mean, look what happened when they failed to detect Anne and allowed her to escape in future eps.
      You state that they're plenty of ways to go about this, but so far not even one practical solution has been provided. What could possibly be a better solution then? Tbh, you're kind of thinking too much on the villagers' side without looking at the full picture with an objective point of view. It's highly unlikely to generate a solution without having to sacrifice anyone whilst helping everyone at the same time. Problem is, there is no win-win situation.
      Of course it's harder for those with morals, but I'm simply pointing out that that's impractical and unrealistic to have in times like these. Having morals and such generates a greater risk and cost. Thus, having such high idealism can prove to be problematic thinking as well during those times.

      @@st.dantry5051 If they take half and let them live that's Thorfin coming for them next episode. also villagers would still die they barely had food to begin with. This was the fastest safest easiest and kindest in terms of not letting the villagers suffer.

    • @clarev.377
      @clarev.377 4 года назад

      @@st.dantry5051 And again, I understand where you're coming from, but you're still thinking things rather objectively. Games don't show you how one poor decision or action can ultimately lead to huge consequences and backlash on a mass group of ppl, especially the repercussions or negative impacts that results from the leader's misjudgment of the situation. We're talking about real life here. Not game chars where ONLY ONE individual is affected. Plus, in your situation, good for you for not being able to harm fake chars, but it only resulted in you not gaining anything, not losing something. In Askeladd's case, if he made the wrong choice, it would result in tons of losses for him.
      If Askeladd chose to allow the villagers to survive and just took the food, the villagers would eventually die from starvation and the cold. If he just stole the food, the villagers would notice and report him to their army. Plus, how would Askeladd's army obtain their shelter from the cold then? Live with the villagers? 100 ppl? Not plausible. If he only took half the food and supplies, the villagers would still report them. It was cruel, but there was no other option. So it basically comes down to: the villagers or his army. Of course, he's going to choose his army.
      Yes, Thors' values and morals gained Askeladd's respect and appreciation. But nothing else. Again, that's exactly what got him killed. Worse, his choices created the Thorfinn today. If he chose to throw away his values for one moment, accepted Askeladd's offer, and went on to defeat Floki, then he wouldn't have died. But no, he decided to keep his values and as a result indirectly caused a ton of ppl close to him (his family and Lief) to suffer. See the repercussions on OTHERS of ONE person's actions? Again, not practical to have strong idealisms, morals, and values during those ages.

    • @clarev.377
      @clarev.377 4 года назад +1

      @@st.dantry5051 P.S. About your reply to @Elite Salad, I think your misunderstanding. The person meant "kindest in terms" of RESULT. Meaning, it was the best outcome for the villagers to undergo the least amount of suffering since they wouldn't have to die from starvation and the cold. And again, if it wasn't, then please provide better options. Where's your basis?
      Lastly, if "Askeladd is irredeemable human garbage," then all Vikings are at the time, including Thors, who killed tons of ppl back in his days, and Thorkell, who kills tons of ppl now. They were both Vikings as well. No way they didn't harm innocent ppl back in their youths. So yeah, according to your logic, basically anyone at war is irredeemable.

    You all have to realise though that if askeladd hadn’t taken their food him and his men would have died, and when he killed all those people he probably did it to save them from the suffering that would have followed if they took their food and left, aka watching their loved ones starve or freeze to death, and possibly turn on each other and start killing each other, in worst case scenario some of them may have even been forced to commit cannibalism, so askeladd did save them a lot of suffering and was probably trying to do the right thing, however whether saving them from suffering in return for their lives was askeladd’s decision to make or not is up for debate, but for you to all just write it off as askeladd is a villain with no morals without even thinking about why he done what he did is quite a naive view

This is no difference from Askeladd's situation here, he needed to keep himself and his men alive by any means necessary and that is why you see what you see in this episode. Additionally, you can tell Askeladd did not want to do what he did which is further evidence showing that Askeladd is not a bad person. Because he if didn’t take their food his own men were in jeopardy of starving. Is it totally messed up? Beyond belief. But the morals behind his reasoning absolutely line up with survival of his people because he needs to survive to put Canute as the king. In a way he spared them from starving to death though the winter. He just fast forwarded their impending doom. He gave them the easy way out.

    Gonna write a couple things about this episode, firstly Askellad has been doing this from episode 2 and way before that as well. He allows and leads him men to pillage, rape and murder. This episode most likely hit harder to home than the others because it decides to focus a little bit on the family and the people that Askellad and his men do this to. Before this we are given very little reason to be emotionally attached to the people they are killing, not to say that we cannot objectively see that what they are doing in wrong but that we cannot feel nearly as much empathy for characters that we do not have any insight into, empathy comes from understanding after all. When it comes to the girl and the ending, most interpret what she is saying to be her expressing her relief at the feeling the weight of guilt and fear due to her sin taking the wring being lifted after seeing how Askellad and his men behave, this weight is lifted as her sin is clearly incomparable, not only this but the men committing these acts show no fear of God nor show empathy or remorse for their actions unlike her as multiple times she states that she is fearful of god and his judgement of her. Also if you cannot tell already Askellad clearly has morals however he chooses not to follow them, in fact you can tell as well that he is well aware he is irredeemable; hence why he does not try and stop Thorfinn from killing him in his 'sleep' earlier on in the series. He knows he must atone for his sins and hates himself because he sees his actions in the barbarians he has around him despite knowing all to well that these actions are wrong and irredeemable. Finally just to say alot of people like to sit up on their high horse and judge characters -especially those set in earlier times- saying that what they do is wrong and evil, however the truth is most of us would be doing the same had we grown up in the same period as these people. History has shown us time and time again when evil is committed that if it is considered commonplace and acceptable in the context that it will for the most part go unchallenged.

    This episode has an ironic dilema. Everybody that was “good” got brutally murdered while the sinful girl lived because of her sin. God didn’t help those that needed it or punished the one who deserved it.
    Pretty much no divine justice.

    Askeladd is actually not an "evil" person because Askeladd does not kill for pleasure and killing for no reason is what makes someone "evil". When a tiger kills it's prey, do you think the tiger is "evil" for killing it? You should answer no because the tiger had good reason to kill it, it wanted to eat, to survive. This is no difference from Askeladd's situation here, he needed to keep himself and his men alive by any means necessary and that is why you see what you see in this episode. Additionally, you can tell Askeladd did not want to do what he did which is further evidence showing that Askeladd is not a bad person. Only with a religiously indoctrinated psychology can you come to the conclusion that Askeladd is a "bad" or "evil" person for doing what he did.

    • @WiseGaines
      @WiseGaines 4 года назад +1

      Ryan he’s still an evil person no matter what way you put it. There’s a difference between him and a beast who has no free will. I don’t know why you made that irrelevant comparison 🤦🏾‍♂️ You can choose what you do in life.
