For anyone who is just joining from this video, he once made a suggestion to go to a stone shop (one that sells stone tops for counters and such) and ask for a waste piece from a sink insert. After getting over the social anxiety of asking for something for free, I went and the people at my local shop were very nice and gave me a very nice quarts slab (about 10inx15inx3in). It fits perfectly on our crafting table at home and has made a world of difference for tooling.
I guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I somehow lost my account password. I would love any assistance you can give me!
AWESOME stuff, and great instructions! You also have a great calm voice, that keeps me relaxed when trying to follow along with the videos! Thank you!!
Out of curiosity, do you have any project recommendations for someone just starting out in leather work that is great for building fundamentals? Thanks!
The foxit reader has mangled some of the curves of my breastplate pattern. Don't know why, think it was a scaling issue or something. Some curves were fine, some got flattened out, and where this happened the lines no longer matched up at all. Used a different pdf reader and it didn't happen. Thought I'd put it out there.
@@Princearmory thank you so much!! I just recently purchased my needed beginner tools from tandy and im not disappointed! But that being said I did notice cheaper easier pricing on weavers site 🖤🥰 so yes I agree thank you for responding!!
I'm using a 9oz veg tan for this project. I bought the pattern and have watched this video and I didn't catch a suggested leather weight that we should use. What do you suggest?
I can't wait to see the whole set put together, it's gonna look awesome! Might just use this skirt technique to make me some side leg protections, samurai-style. Astounding job!
Why not shape them by placing on the back of a spoon.. then another spoon added to the other side.. and continue until you go full circle with the spoons and leather
Now what would be cool is some keeled scales for a bit more texture and break up the nice smooth look of the rest of the armor. Maybe even a bit of a darker color underneath each scale. It does look super cool though and it really makes me want to get into leather crafting!
Heck yeah you can make the scales as simple or involved as you like! You could even go as far as fully tooling each individual scale with vinework or flowers or other textural elements! It would take AAAAAAGES, but the end result would be truly incredible
Somehow you read my mind and pinpointed exactly the kind of piece I wanted to make for myself. I started making a skirt with metal copper scales but The Ring Lord ran out of stock. I might switch to just do this instead
Copper sheets are not too expensive. It would be interesting if the belt dies that he uses to make his scales would be able to cut copper. If so then maybe you can finish your project still using the metal copper scales!
This is so completely different from how I imagined my scale skirt. I this your pattern probably works better than mine. I'll definitely keep this tutorial in mind. Thank you.
Does scale size have a effect on defense of the armour? Say smaller scales providing more tension for a comfy fit? Or larger scales having more ability to take hits? Totally new to the whole experience and trying to design scale vambraces while I dive down the rabbit hole lol.
The level of finish you put on each scale is 100% up to you. If you want to edge bevel and burnish each scale you absolutely can, and it will look incredible! It will also take a bazillion hours to get done with the project. If you've got the time for it and are willing to put it towards the scales, you'll end up with something truly stunning! You can also tool each individual scale for texture. Imagine how impressive a vest of scales each tooled with a small flower or symbol would be! Legendary level equipment!
Finally I have found a way to make leather scales without having to countenance getting a custom punch made. Amazing. Everything looks fantastic here. Thankyou!
Very cool, my liege. You're right, this is a good time to "skill up". I've been working on a face mask, myself (don't worry, I'm not under the mistaken impression it's medically viable, I'm just preparing myself for the Mad Maxian future). This is another one of those jobs that's not technically difficult, mostly time-consuming, but the end product just looks so spectacular!
Great video, thanks! I love that hammer, and also that strap cutter! I have not seen either of those offered on the Weaver Site (or I would have them by now!). Could you let us know where you got them?
More Absolutely phenomenal work! I love your templates! Are you going to do matching shoulder pieces for your breast plates? Perhaps something added on instead of just laid over top?
been looking to recreate the clan sakai armor from ghost of tsushima, been going well with the metal underlayer but needed help with scales so this helped. i'm just gonna layer it on top of the metal
I have GOT to work up the nerve to start working on a full suit of armor; mans gonna be on his third tutorial series before I even make a set of bracers!
@@ewill3435 I know where I'm screwing up on rivets, I'm trying to use rivets that are too tall, or more accurately WAS trying to, I've recently changed that up and they've been doing A LOT better. As for snaps. I can feel you there, getting the center post to roll over properly can be annoying. My holster for example, I have to redo the snap on it because while the button snap is fine, the connector snap has broken loose because the center post didn't roll enough. Think it was due to my setter being the wrong size on the nipple. Also found that using a piece of granite as my pounding surface helps on all my hardware settings. Went to a local countertop place where I live and picked up a scrap of Granite 24" x 12" x 1" for between 15 and 20 bucks. Did that about a year ago, haven't looked back since.
@@Rkurnelm to be honest, I haven't tried making anything that uses a snap since I set up on my workbench (I used to do my leather work on my dorm room desk), but I've got a a hip pouch idea that I want to try out that'll need a snap, so here's hoping the workbench pulls through for me

I'm also watching it during the Covid-19 lockdown, and if everything goes apocalyptic and we end up in a Mad Max type scenario, at least i'll be the best dressed biker on the desolate plains.
it is time consuming, but you get into a rhythm with it. It's a great project to take on while multitasking. Throw a favorite movie/show on and work through it! definitely worth it in the end!
Generally the best way to ensure a proper fit is to print as is, then modify from there via either scaling or extending a given panel in a particular direction. Because everyone is a different size/shape, it's not always as simple as "scale up 50%" or "scale down 20%". Cardboard/card stock/paper mockups to make modifications are pretty much essential to ensure proper fitment.
hey man this is probably but i thought id ask just in case. im wanting to make the fantasy suit youve been making (with templates of course as im really new) and was wondering roughly how far a full hide would go towards it? (im a little below average height, medium build) i realise this is a really broad question just wondered if you may be able to give me some direction.
It's a really hard question to answer just because there are so many variables, but a full hide (most veg tan are sold as sides, so two sides = 1 full hide) should get you most of the way there if you are willing to play some jenga with the pieces and are careful how you place things. That said, it may take significantly more or a bit less depending on how you scale things and if you are or are not willing to use less prime bits of leather like the bellies and neck of the hide.
Very cool to see this done in leather. I work with metal scales in scalemaille and chainmaille and the look you have is the same as my metal stuff. Awesome job!
I would consider buying a pair of the punches and welding the trailing edges together, cutting most of the handles off, and making a piece to fit this into a press. It would make creating tons of these very quick.
Weaver makes custom dies for clicker presses and could easily make something like what you are talking about. They could probably even make one clicker die that would punch multiple scales. Definitely a good call if you foresee yourself making a huge number of scales
@@bjornsworkshop9288 sorry for the late follow-up. Numerous scales? I plan to make a version of this to cover my rear, in addition to the front. I used to fight heavy stick in the SCA, and I hated getting hit on the tailbone.
