it's good stuff but they also starts in the wrong end. while plastic bags does end up in the ocean the biggest sinner is the fishing and construction business. take the whale that stranded in Norway just recently that was "full of plastic bags" there was 0 bags in, but almost 50m^2 of cover-plastic from a construction site. so while it's good to make people think twice and start using a net when going to shopping it only affects the last 5% of the plastic waste. but any extra awareness is good.
not an accurate assessment. Sticking to data, apparently 20% of ocean plastic comes from boat-related stuff, all the rest from the land. About construction business, it doesn't seem to contribute so much compared to everyday items and food wrappings, and this wild estimate of yours of only 5% of waste resulting from our own negligence is waaaay below reality I'm afraid. Data here: www.euronews.com/2018/04/20/what-plastic-objects-cause-the-most-waste-in-the-sea- I agree that individuals should not take all the blame and guilt away from companies and governments. But 1) as you say, every bit helps, 2) consumers really do hold a lot of responsibility in that particular case, and 3) it's not so pragmatic to comment negatively on a small action on the grounds that the energy would "be better spent elsewhere". That dude won't go out and inspect businesses using plastic wrappings on an industrial scale to check if they're disposing of them properly. So the energy just *won't* be spent elsewhere by this guy. Therefore, it's best spent where it is :)
Agree with the data. We clean up in and around NYC on kayaks and trust me when I tell you we see the same amount plastic floating and washed ashore every day. Under magnification the micro-plastics are evenly distributed thoughout coastal beaches. The task is endless and quite dispiriting sometimes, but like he said it has to be done.
Yes, but at the ame time he is polluting massively with all those fossil engines. Just because you do not see the particles from burning fuel, it does not means it is not toxic and contaminating. Leo, do not fit an engine in your boat, consider only wind or an electric motor. Engines must disappear!
Typical British reserve shown by Charlotte; I met her while we were both sailing in Madeira, and then in Antigua,, with Jess, where she had sailed from Falmouth. Most of her Atlantic circuit was on a wooden boat that she had almost completely rebuilt. She and her crew taught me so much about managing yachts and were so helpful to this lone sailor. But I'm not sure they even realised how much! Fantastically experienced and skillful - glad to see they're doing well.
I know Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
What a kind bunch of people that belong to the boat building community. So awesome that your friend wants to build an engine for you....and bring it to you....and install it too. Hug to that dude and another for cleaning up the planet. I think I need to build a boat.
I am in nova scotia (an hour from halifax). If he decides to land and drive from here, I would happily donate the use of a trailer to haul the motor and a place to stay when he gets here so he can rest up for the big drive.
I fully commend Steve's passion for plastic removal, living in Australia we are only just starting to see this problem develop in our waterways and I think we will all be in some way, out there cleaning up the sea and we must act sooner than later to solve this systemic social issue worldwide. Education is the key and I thank you Leo for putting this out there in this video. Cheers
Sailing across an ocean on a vintage boat with a VW camper van and then driving the van from Nova Scotia to the West Coast. Now that's an adventure worth watching. I can't wait to see that. Good luck.
I think I could offer assistance sailing through the north-west passage. Now that would be great for a guy who isn't a sailor and just can't get enough winter.........After winter is over, let's go north so we can still be in winter..........lol They don't call Canada the Great White North without reason.....
Go on then and lift it. Better yet, figure out a better way to do more of the same thing - I bet you could if you put you mind to it. People do amazing things when they decide to.
2km coastline of Norway was cleaned this summer by a group of voulentares, they picked up 22tons, while this was in an heavy affected area where a lot of stuff from UK and Netherlands float in it's still was just 2km... Norway got 29000km mainland and 72000km island coastline. what's needed is free dumps at the recycle plants for drift plastic that just some few districts got in Norway... i for my part picked up 16 tons last year with whats classified as drift trash but i see i different as drift wood can be ether cut to planks if large enough logs or fired up to heat my house (don't do it in an old cast iron fireplace or it will rust to pieces in no time because of the combination of salt plus heat). and no landbugs goes in wood that have been sipping in saltwater for a year or so.
Leo, Your friend is doing something very wonderful. I never use to think about it but I have become more aware in the last few years. Thanks for showing him and his work to the world..
Leo, Thank you for introducing me to these fine young people. "Don't think about it, just do it" is a philosophy that I need to adopt! Kudos to the lovely ladies for restoring an old boat and giving it not only a new life but an opportunity to serve a purpose again. I wish them well. The restoration was very nice and their boat has a very classic look. Thank you to Steve for his insight into the plastic problem we have on this planet. If each person substituted glass or paper or some other material for bags or food containers we could reduce our dependence on plastics and the need for continued use of hydrocarbons in plastic manufacturing. The move to plant based biodegradable plastics needs to be encouraged if we want to continue having the convince of plastics without the horrible consequences we are now seeing not only in the oceans but in our most precious resources like water and food. Remember the slogan "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" has the first step of reduce which everyone can do with no more effort than choosing to not use plastic when ever possible. Enough of my soap boxing. Great video. Wishing you a safe journey and looking forward to your next video.
Great video, with two amazing tales. Love the concept that there is no ‘throw away’ easy fix to plastic materials. Once you’ve bought plastic you own it for life
Hats off to Steve, in fact, two hats off to Steve . The first for getting in and having a crack at cleaning up the ocean a bit , and the second for keeping an old combi going for 1.3 MILLION kays . so if you're looking , well done mate.
I thought we'd see at least a little of Francesca in your England videos. It was nice seeing her quiet, sweet, patient support of you and your project. And it seems she's a pretty good cook, too.
Really some great projects. I love the plastic cleanup project. My wife and I live on our own little homestead and every bit of plastic we bring in, we have to haul out. And then what do we do with it? The waste management companies don't deal with it responsibly. We take our own bags to market. Anyway, I digress, I'm not a boat builder nor do I ever intend to be, but these projects are very inspiring none the less.
jay90374 It really would. I mean right off the bat, if you’ve ever taken a stone to the windshield and not got glass in your face, you’ve got plastic to thank for that.
It's humbling and inspiring, to see the enthusiasm , of you younger guys, in making that difference, however small it seems , plastic ,is causing utter havoc on so many levels that , people really do need a serious wake up call, on cutting down buying so much of the stuff , well done on a very insightful video 👏
Perkins are wizard. Gardners even more so. Legendary in every way. Serviceable. Very brit. Low RPM. Also go forever. Several houses in UK provide complete service, new, and used. Better too much than too little engine. The dog cart with kid or puppies slayed me. So cute.
Cleaning the oceans and reducing our environmental impact is critical for the future of our planet. Good on you Clean Ocean Sailing. We will gladly support you on Patreon. Keep up the excellent work!
Dear Leo Goolden 👍👌👏 Oh WOW! You are definitely an impressive guy who knows some extremely impressive people, Sir. Congrats! Thanks a lot for recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health.
Thank you Leo for the video and it's for letting me know your friend in Cornwall who manages to sensitize people to the pollution of inland waters and oceans, a greeting to Joseph from Sicily
Excellent video Leo, loved seeing the follow up with the girls and Stephen and clean ocean sailing. And hes right, if you do go for a diesel engine the Perkins he suggested is a very good choice.
This is my favourite RUclips channel. Absolutely top-quality content. Can’t wait to see you get back to work on the good ship Tally-ho. Best of luck with it all.
I thought your previous work was pretty well done, but you keep topping yourself. Thanks for the introduction to your friend Steven and his boat Annette, you choose your friends well. Cheers!
Ahoy! The charter boat is so cool! So refreshing seeing someone pull off what we’ve been trying to do as well! We’ve been undergoing a massive refit as well to do the same thing though at a much larger scale... Also we have a Perkins 4.236 on one of our sailboats! Runs great! Some parts are starting to get a bit pricey/hard to find but still a great motor! We are right around the corner from sequim ( it’s skawimm)!
Just seeing this now in 4/2021. My only sailing experience was in June/July of '85. Crewed on a 41' Rival named 'Gandy Dancer', from Shamrock Quay in South Hampton down the Channel side, Weymouth(?), Portsmouth, Devon & Salcombe. Wonderful Memories. I recall the Devonshire 'clotted cream'... The Pub food and Guinness beer was excellent. When we arrived at each new port we'd bust out the rum, Cadbury chocholate and play dominos. 😋.
Great episode! You have some wonderful friends! I love the van. We still have a 1973 VW camper van we bought new in "73"! It has been to Panama, Central America twice and still going (second engine)! Grew up in it as a kid. Kinda been the family vehicle. Steven's dedication to recovering trash and plastics is admirable! Keep up the good work!

Love folks like this. Creative and self-sufficient. The world needs more of them.

@Rey Cassius instablaster =)
Hope the girls venture has made it through the COVID plague, could be a rough few years.
Still going, according to the website.
What a kind bunch of people that belong to the boat building community. So awesome that your friend wants to build an engine for you....and bring it to you....and install it too. Hug to that dude and another for cleaning up the planet. I think I need to build a boat.
What a truly lovely man and obviously a fantastic friend. What a rare gem.
Bravo, Steve! Everyone likes to say that someone ought to do something about the problem, but those are just words. You go out and do it.
Another great video Leo and a massive thanks as well to everyone Leo brought to us, such talented and dedicated individuals, Thanks everyone 👍👍
Imagine the how much better the world would be if we had a few more people like Steve. Inspirational.
Your friend Steve is an absolute legend... the world needs a million “Steve’s” - god bless him.
I am in nova scotia (an hour from halifax). If he decides to land and drive from here, I would happily donate the use of a trailer to haul the motor and a place to stay when he gets here so he can rest up for the big drive.

great of you to share your friends' missions on your platform. class
What an incredible bunch of folks you know!

Totally har brained dangerous and suicidal fantasy right out of the 70’s. Stick to recycling which allows you to take care of things at home.
I know, I want that to be a channel so I can watch the tally ho engine rebuilt and sailed to Washington, plus the dude is awesome.
I think I could offer assistance sailing through the north-west passage. Has Steve got a patron What a great Guy, I tip My Hat to You Sir, Thank You For All You Have Done
Charlotte and Jess’ story is such a feel good thing. If I am ever up that way it would be a must do.
I remember when the girls started this project. It's fantastic to see it completed and doing business.
2 tons of trash!!!! That’s amazing!! I will be supporting that project!! An incredible young man.
2 tons is nothing, sadly..

Clean Ocean Sailing ! Right on Steve, many blessings!
Love the plastic cleanup idea Steve has. I think it could become a very popular vacation thing! Fingers crossed!
Nice 2 vids. Those 2 ladies must be good cooks. beautiful restoration. Props to the fellow with the engine offer & what he does for the environment.
Wow, so many great people, the world needs more. Thanks for cleaning up the river even though I’m across the pond, I find your work fantastic.
Noble effort...If everyone took a moment to pick up the trash, we could truly make a significant difference....
Great video, with two amazing tales. Love the concept that there is no ‘throw away’ easy fix to plastic materials. Once you’ve bought plastic you own it for life
My hat off for that guy
That's very awesome of Steve to be taking his valuable time to clean up the ecosystem!! Thank you very much Steve! We should all be pitching in!
How sweet to hear form these two business women! Amazing refit.

Massive respect. We are all in this together. Great to see people just doing their part knowing it can and will become something bigger.
Absolute respect to your friend Leo. It is inspiring to hear how dedicated he is. 👍👍👍
Steve's a hero in my book. And so generous and compassionate. His mate Cecil on the other hand, bit of a smoking problem. 😏
What a legend . Great humans doing awesome stuff
Another beautiful, thought provoking video...imagine a world without plastic!
It would be horrible!
jay90374 It really would.
I mean right off the bat, if you’ve ever taken a stone to the windshield and not got glass in your face, you’ve got plastic to thank for that.
A world without plastic.... terrible. But a world without plastic waste and pollution would be very nice indeed.
"If we don't try then we haven't even tried" Truer words have never been spoken.
…. like the Projects of the People you are Talking with, especially the plastic collecting Story.... love such people

That would be an awesome video series, Steve rebuilding and transporting the Perkins engine to Tally Ho. What a great adventure that'd be
Charlotte and Jess. That was some awesome babes!

A really cool thing your friend is doing with the plastic round up. Thanks for the video.
Great episode! You have some wonderful friends! I love the van. We still have a 1973 VW camper van we bought new in "73"! It has been to Panama, Central America twice and still going (second engine)! Perkins Diesel? Bloody old design, heavy and noisy, but bloody sold, reliable and long lasting.
An excellent choice.
dude cleaning the ocean is so super sweet man! what a dude!

we have to teach the youth ... thats a very good message
Great video all round , fair play to your friend with Plastic Problem it really SUCK's plastic !!!
There might actually be still some hope left for the world with people like Steven beneath us.
Nobody is commenting about Pupmobile.
We are too well mannered. Besides, it isn't always necessary to state the obvious...
While the pups were cute, the wee charioteer was having a ball! You can't buy smiles like that.
John Ratcliffe you've missed the point and showed how impolite you may be
What a wonderful followup on past projects Thanks
Congrats! You are an amazing guy knowing amazing people respectively having amazing friends. Best regards and good luck to you all.
Yepee! What great memories that VW Camper Bus brought back. Love this channel and all the people related to it...cheers...rr in Normandy
Two great projects I'm so glad I stoped by to watch, I will now keep an eye out both, nice work.
Great work showcasing other projects. Amazing work being done.
Wonderful story Leo. Cornwall looks amazing.
