Great job Matty. I was just on the other side of the fourth windmill. That ship that was coming in out on the horizon went in to Lafarge. It was a busy Monday around Buffalo. You do a great job covering this operation. It's very cathartic. I could watch it all day long.
The multi-tracked building is the old coal thaw shed back when this was the coke plant for Bethlehem Steel. The smaller white building, I believe, is the "new" thaw shed.
Somebody help me understand what I am looking at. A big machine flips the whole car over and dumps out the coal? I guess I always figured it dumped out of the bottom somehow.
Some cars can dump out of the bottom. Cars that are a part of large unit trains that deliver to power plants and such. It’s usually quicker to dump out of the bottom than a rotary dumper but neither operation is considered fast.
@@chriswoodruff2293 All depends on the type of unloader the receiving facility has; coal hoppers can't be bottom dumped at a rotary dumper. Also, this facility gets unit CSX coal trains which have nothing but BethGon coalporter cars, which don't bottom dump.
Outstanding videos with the drone views.
Cool video
Awesome video 👍😎🇺🇸🚂👍
Thanks!
Interesting operation and nice to see!
Nice footage Matty! 😎
Thanks!
I really could watch this all day, it IS that cool!
I don't think I'll ever get tired of filming this operation! It's the biggest reason I'm glad I got a drone.
Fantastic enjoyed
"And now your moment of zen..." as another hopper rides the switchback.

Thank you!
Yeah, I could watch this all day too. I sure do get a kick out of the car coming out and switching back the other way. Never gets old!
I could watch this all do too, though I'd have to spend a small fortune for enough drone batteries lol 😆
What is the structure called that tips the hoppers? Where does the coal end up prior to the conveyor?
It's called a rotary dumper. It turns the cars upside down and dumps them into a pit below that the conveyor feeds out of.
"chopped" roof on the cab so it fits into the new thawing shed?
Most likely the dumper, the cab has been chopped longer than the "new" thaw shed has been standing.
What is the long multi-tracked structure the cars are pushed through? Also the long white one?

Thank you Matty@@mattygunn693
@@154Colin You're welcome!
Was that a skidsteer pushing an empty car?
Nice vid...Would be a very interesting place to explore, but not allowed.
Thank you! I hear ya, I'd love to explore the grounds and buildings.

It's called a rotary dumper, and does exactly what you described.
