Seriously, Stuart, you are rapidly becoming a treasure. A National Treasure, an International Treasure. Your videos are so incredibly calming and pleasant - we're lucky to have you - and I've never quilted anything, nor am I likely to. But so much of your advice carries over into all sorts of other crafting things that I attempt to do. Bless you, take care of yourself.
I’ve just come across your video channel and I love the way you teach! I’m looking at quilting videos and considering dipping my toe in. I’m a beginner and looking for simple blocks to sew and if everyone taught like you, I’d have taken the plunge. I’ve subscribed and I can’t wait to watch more. Your voice is soothing and there’s no irritating music. Thank you.
I love your videos. You seem to know what all the little questions that we forget to ask. I think you are an excellent teacher. You are knowledgeable, communicative, and friendly besides that you have a nice personality. I am always happy when I conclude a visit with you. I never feel talked down to or inferior. Thank you for all you do. Namaste Judi
In all the quilting tutorials and all the quilt shows I've seen, never have any done stay stitching around the quilt top. I'm at that very point in the quilt I'm working on and will try it! Thanks Stewart!😃 oh and as mentioned in comments a block of the month would be great!!
Stay stitching will also secure the ends of the seams that tend to come undone around the edges...really helpful if you have lots of small seams on a quilt edge.
Have you tried pool noodles for sandwiching your 3 quilt layers together? I LOVE IT.. I am a new quilter (about a year now) and I watched a couple of videos here on youtube where the quilter used pool noodles to sandwich their quilt together.. IT IS SO EASY.. and the BIG quilts are NOT A PROBLEM.. I have bad knees also and can not get up off the floor anymore , so this pool noodle technique really works well for me.. I hope you try this method and make a video of it and share it with others here on youtube as they may not know about it..And thank you for this video on stay stitching.. I have never heard of it before. If I don't forget ( I am old now, lol 57 years old) I will use it on my next quilt top.. God bless..
This is really helpful for me, I’m fairly new to quilting and my first couple have ended up with wrinkles as I’ve quilted. Having watched your video, I now understand that I wasn’t using nearly enough pins. I’m on a big learning curve with it but love what I can create. I’m sure they will get better with practice!
When I stay stitch and I use the bigger stitch length my quilt starts “gathering” so I use a 3.5 not 5. Anyway i can solve that problem, or just stick to 3.5. Another thing with the seam being “twisted”. I do do that on purpose as some blocks are joined with seams on same sides and to me too thick, so I twist to make the seams meet. I do iron the twist flat.
Thanks Stuart, excellent tutorial, just in time to help me with basting my quilt! Is there any chance that you could do a video on how to make your Nutcracker Advent Calendar?
Love the round scarf It would be so easy to make and post of to my son ready for the winter When will your next project be shown Stuart You give me so much inspiration I am beginning to feel less of a duffa
I've seen "quilts" the size of your sample used as a counter top cloth used when canning. The jars are placed on the quilt after coming out of the hot canner and they are safe from breaking on the counter top.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. As can often be the case, there are lots of tutorials for how to make the top part of your quilt followed by adding your batting and base layer with little information about making sure your top sewn layer is properly prepared and sitting correctly. Also what do you do if you notice something isn’t right part way through.
Hi , i just subscribed to your channel, i found your video very helpful with a lovely description of each step you were taking. I do have a question. What do you do about over spray of the 505, you know when your table or other things around where you basted your quilt are sticky because of the product landing around where you basted?
I agree with everything you've said! I do give my quilt tops a final press and they looks great. But then I have to fold the quilt up to take it to the long-armer. I know she doesn't take the time to press again. Same with the backing fabric. I just try to fold it as few times as possible. Any ideas? Short of rolling it.
I used these fabric in some of the 400 masks I made ...the remnants went in the stars and diamonds quilt I made to be raffled for the NHS will be raffled in the next few days
Hi Stewart, quick question, how do you remove the basting glue from your tabletop? I always get some on the table also and am having a lot of trouble removing it. It's ruining my table :( Thanks, love you videos.
Don't know what your table top is made of but a VERY sparing squirt of WD40 may help shift it. I've heard baby oil does the trick as well? Or just furniture polish? I have an old shower curtain to lay on table for any spraying operations :)
Frankie Bateman I use my pitch pine kitchen table which can be scrubbed with a brush and soapy water.. but I also love the other tips... I’ll experiment! X
Good info Stuart. A nicely finished quilt is usually the result of a little attention to detail. The extra time will save a big disappointment in a poor final result.

I like the idea of stay stitching as I've had quite a few waffling edges.
