It was an absolute joy to re-watch this series. Such an amazing part of gaming history. I hope some day to see more videos like this once again.
Those 1960s quarters and coin count slips need to be in a shadow box with the manual. Maybe even another marquee if you can find one and a nice small engraved plaque. Those are show pieces that need preserving. It would make a great wall hanging in your arcade. Maybe Im crazy but this piece needs to be celebrated.
+Septik Nolan Yep, would definately mount them to the machine somehow.
+Septik Nolan While it is remotely possible that those quarters were theirs, as I have seen 60s quarters in circulation, I bet they were in the coin bucket. You don't see many that old in circulation anymore. Always a neat discovery to find coins and tokens in old arcade machines.
Not on the machine itself. A shadow box was what I was talking about.
I bought everything to make the sliders at the store today! LOL
Out of all the projects you've done - I had my doubts that this would ever work - Glad to be proved wrong - Excellent job, am amazed its working as well as it is - Surely this working, restored Computer Space must be worth a fortune now!
love to see another mate helping another mate .. what a awesome thing to do and give him something back
Computer Space is both fascinating and terrifying! My friend/mentor Cree was terrified of video games back in the '70s because she thought someone was gonna pop up and scare her!
I can't believe this is where it all began-the first commercial video game.
SWEET!!! Awesome to have Computer space in your collection. Congrats.
Great to get an in site into how computer space operated and was constructed. U must be just staring at it right now ! Stunning
+sean tagg Yes, it's stunning!
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech one lucky guy John. Pls can you add me on Twitter bro- @sean_tagg
That looks awesome. Simple game but historical. Great to see it with your other games.
Perfect cool down after an absolute crazy Wrestlemania last night.
Awesome, been waiting almost a year for the damn Computer Space restore!!!!
+John Phillips lol!
John thanks for sharing your restoration of Computer Space. This has been a cool project. Gosh from start to this video what a diffrence. So glad you saved it. God bless.
Congratulations John! Computer Space first came out the year and month I was born. Fantastic to see it in all its glory!!!
Epic restoration.
One warning about gaffer's tape. I love the stuff; it's strong, yet comes off far more cleanly than duct tape...at first! But if you leave it on for months or years, the glue can dry to a nasty hard powder that's hard to clean off. So gaffer's tape is really best for temporary jobs. I'm glad you switched to a different tape.
Wow John! This cab has turned out so well. The restore went so smoothly! Having Warren and Adam around to help was definitely a great addition to the show. Thanks for providing us with great content!
That 1963 quarter is made of 90% silver (as well as any quarter dated earlier than 1965.)
That one coin is worth about $4 at the current raw silver price. Nice!
Congrats John! Thank God for good friends. That game looks amazing! Brings back memories of digital circuits classes in college.
When we work as a team, we can fix or do anything! Very nice bro! IDK bout the 12v bulb in marquee tho its glaring into the screen, maybe foam weather strip to block light?
well done John that computer space looks amazing.
Just beautifull ,I really love this computer space !!! , great job !
You need to find you a NARC machine. That has to be my most favorite arcade game ever.
Not! Even! ONCE!!!
@@YuukiTakemoto1996 Just say NO!
Maybe someone else has already mentioned it by now, but an easy way of polishing carriage bolt heads is to mount the carriage bolt in a power drill and hold a piece of sandpaper, emery cloth, or steel wool in the palm of your hand. Then just drill the carriage bolt head against the sandpaper in your hand.
Beautiful. BTW, I'm 99% sure you forgot to tape up that AC line. :P
watching this while eating home made white castle burgers! haha love it
Congratulations on finishing the Computer Space! That's one awesome addition to the line up.
Great job John....looks fantastic
So good to see this finished. Looks great all lit up. Fantastic work from you, Warren and Adam :)
I really like to see those old old arcades come to life..
+Runar W This bugs me, where did calling arcade machines, Arcades come from? Is it a West Coast thing? Arcades aren't the machines themselves, but the location they're in. So yeah... Where/when did this start? It's legit driving me nuts
+PopeTheRevXXVIII I've heard them called Arcade machines since the dawn of time, though just "arcade" is odd.
Sean Cooper
Yeah, it's become a pet peeve of mine.
I really like to see those old old ..arcade machines.. come to life.. =)
+Runar W haha!
Hey JOHN ! am so happy to watch these videos and go on this restoration etc quest with you,i was pretty pissed off last one when u changed the stuff that worked ok and had issues with the Screen that was kind of perfect as it was before.
I am not very much into the technical stuff but in the last couple of Videos with the Invaluable Help of your Friends,i easily learned more than i had learned the whole previous year or two :)
Keep up the Good work.
John, what an amazing series thanks dude! Fascinating to see the whole process unfold. To see a game 'written' in hardware is awesome. Changing the valves to fix the TV, only 2 TTL's to get the game working again... everything, really, really interesting.
By the way, what Adam says - Marble Madness for sure! (I did the tape turbo load for that game for the C64) Would be great to see you restore one of those machines.
Best wishes dude - you rock. :)
+Simon Nicol thanks, Simon! Glad enjoyed it.
The easiest way to clean / polish bolt heads is to stick them in a drill, get a piece of material with a blob of steal polish, then drill the bolt head on the material.
You probably should have cleared them as well, so the rust doesn't come back as quick.
Awesome restore/repair series :)
This looks amazing John!
Hey John, could you buy yourself a big roll of double sided sticky tape/ carpet tape, the stuff comes in handy all the time & holds up longer than standard tape as well.
My guess is that the overlay was originally glued & over time has fallen off & a operator just taped it there in place.
Keep up the great work & let Warren know that he's a real gentleman helping you out this much.
+Bimmy Lee I really do think it was taped originally.
Yeah I agree, I was only about quarter way through the video & then I saw the control panel was done in the same way.
Once you put that control panel back in - I was blown away! That shit looks so slick, well done.
Hey John great job on getting that game up and running as fast as you did. If that was my project cab I know it would be at least 5 yrs to a decade before I figured it all out. Is Computer Space in the "I'll never sell" collection?
+AdamDIY Thanks, Adam! It's a miracle I got it working. Well, not really... I had some AMAZING help. For now, it's safe. :)
Proud sponsor of simple green once again.
Great to see it back together again & working as it should :-)
I think the novelty will wear off pretty quick though, like you said "the game play is like watching paint dry !"
So I wouldn't be surprised if this game is out of the basement in 12 months ;-)
I think if someone offers you a good amount, it will be gone soon enough, especially due to the lack of space in the basement.
Time will tell !!
Any Quarters from 1964 and back are 90 % silver . you lucky dog
This was an amazing series to watch John. Now all you need is a free play rom hack for it. Haha.
+mokthemagicman No ROM to hack. :) It could be done with a mod wire in the right place, but it seemed better to leave it original.
+wondras It was just a joke.
+mokthemagicman Ah, so it was. *whoosh* The freeplay idea did come up, though...
john, im a coin collector. anything pre 1965 is silver. just so your aware. :D
that project was amazing, i learned so much!
1963 that's a silver quarter, friend. Any quarter, dime, and half dollar from 1964 and before is silver.
+ihatemadmoe yes, 90% silver, and they do have value. probably worth 3 dollars each.
The 1829 Bulb is what i have in my 1966 Crosstown pinball machine. So yes they where probably common in late 60's pinballs
8:28 - Did that simple green leave that residue on the finish?
Hey John, this entire project is kickin' ass..!!
Such an improvement. Well done! =)
I'm guessing that the score and timer are an overlay, separate from the game play. Perhaps some trimmers or caps that would raise it up to be in-line with the bezel decal?
Cool video. I saw one of these cabinets at a Goodwill in Indianapolis, 1980. I was only 10 at the time but I remember, it was a pong conversion. Yeah, you don't forget them.
Hey John, great to see your Computer Space finally 100% working, and you totally owned it with that game you had.
Heard your comment about where to put it, I think if you could rethink where some of your stuff goes so that you could put it next to the Ice Cold Beer, kind of have the "different" games in your collection together, near the front of your arcade so they kind of stand out together to anyone entering your arcade, particularly for anyone who is seeing it for the first time.
And I kinda think that putting it where warren said, which is really towards the back of your arcade, is not really presenting it all that good, you want to put it where it will stand out to make people notice it even moreso, after all, that cabinet really demands attention and should be put somewhere where it really will get the most attention possible.
Just my 2 cents anyway.
The Computer Space looks amazing, great job on this John it's always good to have friends to help. Now about that Quantum?
+realpumaoblivion Quantum is def' next.
Awesome
You should have frogger as your intro music for a week or "oh no that damn frogger again" as a tshirt
good job Warren & John very amazing restoration but i think you have again a counter issue for the ship maybe its logic chip who make this like the one you replace before or a contact problem. when Warren play there's nothing but after removing the board for testing the capacitor you have the issue
I would suggest recording your Computer Space high scores as "Your Score vs. Opponent's Score", or in other words subtract opponent's score from your score. So if you get more points while getting hit less, you have a better score. I think it would make the game more competitive.
+JVeg199X That's a good idea!
+JVeg199X Actually, I would just have the highscore and the enemy score as a tie breaker. A person with a score of 20 kills and 15 deaths should beat a person who has 10 kills and 2 deaths. This way, if two people have a high score of 20, and one died 15 times and the other 5 times, then the latter would win.
1:13 obvious answer is a second monitor that shows what the first player is seeing, kinda like Dragons Lair.
If that scotch tape doesn't hold after awhile, you might try some packing tape. It's pretty wide and 2 strips should cover everything. Just don't know how it would hold on the fiberglass.
john the arcade is looking great i cant believe the difference in the arcade since i started watching so many different games the computer space looks great but i cant see you playing it to much as although the game is iconic it looks boring just like the super breakout i cant see that being in your basement once you find the next best thing and need the room cant wait for the quantum that game is gonna be awesome
Warren is right, the Marquee lights should be the 26v bulbs.
1963 quarters are made of silver, its actually worth some money. In 1965 they switched over to nickel and copper.
+Bob Marley Interesting!
ya you gotta save the pre 1964 coins as they're silver and worth far more than just 25¢ face value.
I never get silver coins in change anymore, no fun lol
I was just waiting for frogger to start in this video
John will that window above the computer space bleach the top of the cab with sunlight overtime? excellent video by the way. Cheers!
While experimenting with a video mod on a Sega console, I've noticed that when the Sync signal is marginal, the top of the CRT is where the picture will start to get wobbly, while the rest of the picture is still good. The slight twitching on the CRT in this video reminds me of that, I wonder if it's being caused by a weak sync signal. Not that I have any idea what the root cause would be, but it matches the symptom.
Thumbs the hell up!!!
SILVER SILVER SILVER SILVER 1963!!!!! Anything pre 1965
Hey John, I know you played your friend's visual pinball in another video but do you have plans or ever think you'll build your own? It's pretty crazy all the things you can add to make it feel real like shakers and a real plunger. Would be a cool project I'm sure fans would love. 😃👍
TheManofDew like your pro pic
Great video! you should buy Pong next John! love to get a Pong arcade and Computer space how much does a complete perfectly one cost these days?
Dude, I would love a Pong!
Could you swap the control buttons or their cables to make the directions more like asteroids?
John, if you look at 42:11 the rotate right button is red and should be same color as the rotate left button. I assume the red button should be the fire button
+Michel Castonguay All four buttons are the same, it's just the way the light is hitting it that makes it look different. I didn't even see that they were translucent red unil it was pointed out to me, but you can clearly see it at 1:00:42 once it's backlit.
Do you need to replace old tubes or were you just guessing it would help?
+AdamDIY two were for sure bad.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech You know what works even better? Testing the tubes with a tube tester! Even old stock tubes can be weak.
Dzonemp I'm sure that works great! But, I'm not buying a $100 tester to test $20 worth of tubes. :)
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech If you lived closer, I'd have tested them for free. I helped a guy on KLOV by testing all his tubes and then sending them back to him. He was working on a vintage TV for his game room. Surely someone nearby has one? The picture on yours looked good after the repair. Congrats!
+Dzonemp So from what I understand tubes can go bad like capacitors, in that they work but they get worse over time. And tubes are not like light bulbs where they either work or don't. Is that correct?
would you make a backups artwork scan just in case ?
56:16 I bet there would be bad words if Warren broke it d*cking with the timing. ;-)
I have the same popcorn machine
The expensive bit is usually the tools. The parts are literally cheap as (computer) chips.
anyway? just to setup the coins to fall to the coin return on the side. so you don't have to pull can or reach through?
New shirt idea should be Johns ass hitting the Frogger machine
SlickEnz ha
63 quarter is 90% silver worth about 2.50 melt value.
The timing should match up with pole position always going off in the background
Love watching these videos, Is it possible to move the TV closer to the front of the cabinet? seems like an awful lot of light bleed from the Marquee.
+73mathesar Not easily... but in person, the light is kind of a nice "effect."
+73mathesar I don't think so. At least not using the brackets. Maybe that's why I found those 26v bulbs in there?
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Well since the light bleed is coming from underneath the marquee maybe theres a way to block it from emitting onto the TV? I guess it's not a huge deal but I watched a couple other computer space videos and they don't seem to have this issue.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Looks like all you would need to do is put some think washers between the brackets and where is mounts to the cabinet.
That will push the TV forward.
I'd maybe put Computer Space where the Golden Tee is or swap 720 with Computer Space
So any more news on why there no key lock on front game to remove the panel ?
Frogger start again! lol
Maybe this was explained and I just didn't see it, but I watched some other Computer Space videos on RUclips, and the scoring works normally. Meaning, it doesn't make weird shapes once you get past 9. Was this an early version and that a late? Or what's the reasoning. Seems weird they'd go through all that trouble to make this thing and then not have the numbers count correctly.
What I've seen and read elsewhere, mine is correct. Maybe the emulators fix it. This is from some Computer Space website "Scores are displayed at the right side of the screen as a single digit 7-segment-style numeral. While intended to be in decimal, there's a common issue, typically with the player's score, wrapping around at 16 (instead of 10), thus displaying hexadecimal "garbage" for scores in the range of 10 to 15. (The enigmatic display graphics are the actual output of the Intel 7448 BCD-to-seven-segment decoder chip used by the game.)"
Those 60's quarters might be real silver. Confirm in date. If real silver HIDE them with your riches.
admit it, youve kept warren in the basement for weeks.
Ninja Master ha
what do you use to clean your cabs
JOHN ZOMG you should have discharged the monitor before cleaning it it could be dangerous
Hi john I was wondering have you ever considered adding the Sega Mega Play to your collection?
+Freckleslam Well that's one thing I thought I'd never see on a John video, another Toontown person...
Clear packing tape would have held better
When will you visit me in Tokyo and do a Japan Arcade episode together?
Dude, I would LOVE THAT! :) Maybe some day. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech we look forward to it, we actually also own a game company here in Tokyo we can talk to you about it, we are developing some great games for the Ps4 and mobile and bringing some arcade nostalgia in the mix. If you have line app or skype let's talk?
the markee light its too bright its shiining all over the screen, you gotta like block off all the light shining though
wow this warren guy has shakey hands.. very nice on the build tho guyz congratz.!
Are you sponsored by Simple Green and that Oxy stuff. You should be!
Simon Perry yes, I should be. :)
the last level repeats on indy.. over and over
+Jon Davies Oh, that sounds bad! :)
I still would like a system 1 since marble Madness, road runner and Roadblasters aren't that bad
As for Marble Madness, it was designed by Mark Cerny who joined Atari when he was 17 in 1982. He was also involved in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the Crash Bandicoot series. He was also the lead architect on the Playstation 4. I have his autograph in an album.
Great job, please share Warren's Twitter account :)
For those that want to see the Oculus Rift virtual pinball cabinet mod, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/18EcIxywXHg/видео.html
John
We want kitchen video
Ha
At list short grill video

John, the score keeping didn't look right on Warren's game
looks like it only has 1 digit scoring, after 9 it goes back to 0
+Chuck12 - it counts from 0-15, then restarts. because it only shows one digit, 10-15 are weird symbols.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech the score symbols didn't seem consistent between your game and Warren's
Chuck12 - Huh, I'll have to check that out.
16
Your score is 22
+Ratobuz 16 wraps to 0; adding 5 makes it 21...
Writing down only half your score is meaningless. Your full score was 21-16. If someone else scored say, 20-0, that would be a lot more impressive than your score, but your half-score record keeping would show your score as being higher.
I'm finally first to comment! ...lol
