Some claim their scientific study of ESP overturns the worldview of science. Should we take these startling pronouncements seriously? If so, what would it mean for events in the physical world to defy all known physical laws? Either there is something misleading about those events or something beyond those physical laws.

I think Dr Radin is correct in saying that quantum effects can occur in biological tissues... Quantum tunnelling is important in photosynthesis, and there’s evidence of quantum level effects in olfaction. However, rather than appeal to QM and the laws of Physics, my own feeling is it more to do with the relationship of mind/consciousness to physical matter, which is beyond Physics, and into the realm of Philosophy.
“The universe begins to look more like a great thought than a great machine.”
    ~Sir James Jeans
If for a moment we assume mind/spirit and not space/time/matter/energy is the foundation of reality, as it is for instance, when we are dreaming, our subconscious could bend spoons, read minds and do all the things that Parapsychologists claim - as we do in our dreams. Indeed, all the characters we meet are aspects of ourselves. We are all brought up in Science to believe in materialism, but if we are to understand consciousness, we might need to challenge that assumption.

"But I was also troubled by a nagging sense that something important was missing from my university courses, something real that mythology and fairy tales were pointing to as metaphors. I later discovered to my surprise, and relief, that the same sense of loss was an unspoken secret among many of my colleagues at Bell Labs. I eventually found to my amazement that this was true also within the larger scientific world... I found that quiet interest in advanced human potentials, including psychic and mystical experiences, permeated the mainstream. And not just the industrial research mainstream, but also the academic, scientific, government, medical, and military mainstreams... So these interests percolate underground. Quietly. Persistently.
This odd state of affairs makes it possible in the Western world to advance from preschool through postdoctoral positions and never learn about -- or in many cases even hear about -- serious scientific investigations of psychic and mystical experiences." -Dean Radin, Supernormal

First, there is zero VERIFIABLE evidence to support it, and secondly, it violates virtually EVERY pillar of modern physics.. The scientific method AND worldview, has enabled the technological civilization our species presently enjoys.. Unsubstantiated notions like those of Dr Radin, represent the antithesis of scientific reasoning." -- Bill Norris

I can't help but wonder if any of this research is truly getting a grasp on how ESP is possible. To demonstrate how it works, not that it is happening or showing it should be possible.
I'm sure there are several "illusionists" and "mentalists" that can easily demonstrate these type of "abilities".
If ESP is "proven" through research to the extent that I read people are claiming these studies seem to show then I have difficulty understanding how such people with "abilities" are not doing more to help their fellow humans in need. I would also like to include use of abilities for selfish gains but I assume that anyone who would use "abilities" selfishly would likely not be willing to be studied.

The effects are not that great, usually. So you wouldn't be able to do much with ESP practically. What scientists like Dean Radin show is that you get statistically significant results in experiments where people have to know something that they couldn't know any other way but they're still little effects. For example, you emotionally react to something before you see it. It doesn't happen 100% of the time, but more often than not. If you think about how practical would this be you would be getting a sense of something very emotionally stimulating that you don't necessarily know what it is and it doesn't happen every time. It's difficult to figure out a use for this.

First we should define what ESP is not, nobody was talking about all powerful magic, there are limits to all observable phenomena. I think psychical powers does diminish with distance and size, can't influence past events. It also depends on meditation depth and hyper sensitivity of a medium, it's more like they try to capture some natural flow than enforce physical changes by some magical powers. It doesn't need to be a direct effect, our technical imagination is very limited, medium can't imagine shooting laser beams with his eyes or something like that. Yet things sometimes happen when they shouldn't, body does what mind demands from it, same as acrobat can't explain his movements in the air, can just do it.
This is a good conversation, conclusions might be wrong, but physical world is like that, our body is emergent from force fields and phenomena is very real, persistent trough human evolution.
Maybe miracles are not so obvious this days, there are so many things embedded in every day technology. Why did people research and invent all this new gadgets, it seems like somebody had a dream innovation must be possible somehow.
