    Guys, it will start a fire. It will help someone locate you. It will sharpen the blade on the Signal. It will smash things.. The tools do what they are made to do. Nothing on here is gimmicky. It is not intended as a primary tool for any tool. It is a backup tool when no other tool is with you. An inferior tool is the best tool when no other tool is with you. The Signal is an awesome multitool for those who spend time outdoors.

    I’m an outdoorsman and a scout leader and love my Leatherman Signal. It’s a great everyday carry tool. I don’t go into the backcountry or camping without it. The sharpening tool and whistle and striker are there for emergency purposes. But they all work great.

      Exactly. To call it a gimmick is the same as calling the Tortoise gear fire kits a gimmick. They all start fires in an emergency. He doesn’t get that. It’s not a first string use but they are great backups. Redundancy is good. Love mine.

    I love mine. EDC it every day. Is it perfect? No...never seen a perfect multitool. But for all the extras my other MTs have, the signal has what actually gets used. Not too heavy, comes with pocket clip. Would like an update with a plain edge knife and scissors.

      I hear you, plain edge, scissors, would be a big improvement. I just can't seem to get over the little "fire steel & whistle" combo. Maybe give us those improvements listed get rid of the fire steel and charge us $75, I think I would be a lot more interested.

      +gideonstactical the fire steel actually works well if you keep TinderQuik on you. 1 strike. I keep 5 in my wallet. It's a redundancy to your redundancy.

    • @marcos3686
      @marcos3686 7 лет назад +9

      I agree with you but I gave up the scissors thing a while back. It seems too many people judge a tool too much just because it does not have scissors. Just use the knife...works fine. I have a Signal and love it but a person should never think of a multi-tool as their primary tool. If you need a saw and use it a lot, then you should carry a full saw with you. Same goes for the fire starter and hammer. I see this tool as what could be used as a backup or for light duty applications.

    I actually love the tool. I've had mine for a year now and I've always treated it as a backup item. Granted, an expensive item, but I've been pleased with its quality and durability. Bushcraft tools for me are my bk16, small forest axe and small folding saw usually a Laplander. I added this as my 4th tool and it lives in my haversack. Primarily used the pliers (for pots and grills) the awl and the can opener. Everything else is a redundancy. 2 is 1 methodology.

    • @375Cheytac
      @375Cheytac 2 года назад +1

      Nomster Dude The camera doesn’t pick it up well. However you can get a whistle that’s a lot better and a lot smaller, and is much easier to access in an emergency situation. The whistle is kind of annoying to get out of the signal.
      Having the signal, I would take this if I had nothing else, but aside from the pliers and wire cutters I find it extremely useless. The saw is great for cutting sticks that you can already break with your hands/other objects.
      The combo knife is exactly what I would not want in a survival knife where I am going to need to craft things.
      The hammer is great if you’re in the woods and for some reason can’t find a rock or a stick of wood, which I would prefer over hurting myself with a potential missed strike using the signal.
      The file is darn near useless unless you have absolutely nothing but a few hours to kill to uncomfortably sharpen a blade, and arguably dangerous due to how many strokes you have to do to make a difference.
      Idk, but I can say this tool is definitely not for me and I wished I would have watched a few reviews on it before dropping $120.

    I got the signal because I am what I believe the target market was for it. Prepper noobs. I don't own any multi tools and I imagined myself surviving with nothing but this on my belt. I don't go to the wilderness often and I thought it would be cool to have something that would allow me to tackle the elements. Don't judge me.
    It has been and is currently sitting on my desk and every once in awhile, I use a tool from it. I end up using the pliers often as they are currently the best of any pliers I own, multi tool or not.

    • @clange50
      @clange50 4 года назад +1

    • @bigchunk1
      @bigchunk1 4 года назад +2

      @@clange50 They work well for projects where I need to hold something in place. They come in handy when trying to assemble plastic miniatures of all things. They're also good around the house. If i need to clamp down hard on something to pop it open or just reach into a small space, pliers are the way to go. I also actually went camping with this thing and found the pliers handy for placing small sticks into a wood burning stove. It's the kind of thing where, if you have it on you, you start thinking of ways to use it. The lighter it is, the more likely you will actually carry it so the skeletool is good in that way.

    It was a decent review but when I see people advertising a negative review, one could be forgiven for coming to the conclusion that there is an agenda.
    The signal is 15% lighter than the wave and around 25% lighter than the super tool.
    And it's the only one that has the hook at the end. The Skeletool lets me clip the tool
    onto my belt loop with 1 hand in 1 second. And this without having to add anything to it or having to keep some dorky tool holder on my belt.
    But I always wished the Skeketool came with more of the standard tools.
    They did not just make a new tool here folks. If you were paying attention (and clearly some people weren't) They took one of the most popular tools and beefed it up but kept it lighter than the tools in the same class.
    It's what some people had been waiting for.

  • @The.JZA.

    Could you start a fire with it?.... Yes.
    Could you hammer a stake into the ground or a nail into timber with it?.....Yes.
    Could you use the whistle to call for help even when your throat is hoarse from calling out?.....Yes.
    Could you sharpen your blade if you accidentally cut into a rock?.....Yes.
    None of this stuff is gimmicky. It is legit backup survival tools and they might end up being your primary survival tools if you happen to be caught out unaware. A lot of hikers don't carry flint or even a lighter, especially if you are hiking somewhere where you're not allowed to light fires but if it was life and death and you needed a fire to stay warm and a whistle to call for help, these tools could save your life. I see so many people saying bad things about the Signal and I just can't fathom what is going through their head. It's like they think that everybody has a backpack full of survival gear on them at every moment. Sometimes you just get caught out and this might be the only tool you have because it was in your pocket or on your belt. Think outside the box.
    Also I would like to point out that there are tonnes of aftermarket options to replace the sharpener and whistle/ferro rod with tool bit holders and other things if that floats your boat.

  • @cocoondesign

    The reason why the handle is loose is because you can swing it open with just one hand, and that's an important feature for an outdoor tool IMHO. I have been taught to perform many outdoor tasks with just one hand for emergency and survival purposes, and I have seen one of the Leatherman promotional video shown just that.

    I think many people misunderstand for what this Multi-Tool is for, it's not a survival MT even if he has (last ditch) survival gadget on it.
    To me it's made for adventure, like they said on the website and I would said more it's a backpacking multi-tool, because the carabiner part (+ pocket clip) make it perfect to fit on a backpack strap, there is no other tool like this in the Leatherman range, the skeletool is small task and EDC thing, the MUT is ultra specific tool. You also have quick acces to blades, great to cut your food when you do a break in your hiking, cut or saw branches on your path, do quick repairs on your other outdoor gear with screwheads, if needed.
    I already have a Rebar and it's a great tool, but a Signal would be more practical when I go hiking or MTBing in the forest because of blade acces and carrying options.

I tried out multiple Rebars, and each one had tools that wobbled when locked open. Each one! The serrated blades on each Rebar were the worst! They wobbled vertically so badly, that you'd swear the top-lock was broken. No thanks. I went with the Signal instead. Their liners might be thin, but they lock up far better than the tools on the Rebar. Also, my Signal has never accidentally closed on my fingers, even when bearing down on the handles with the blade locked open.

    I hear your reaction and somewhat agree but the sharpener and fire steel I view as a redundant option (just in case). It has the awl and not the scissors (i like it). It is light and has enough functionality for the overall package for my daypack. I own a few Leatherman tools Large, medium and this one a lighter option. The signal has many unique features to clip onto my daypack and the overall package fits a niche in my system. Like your channel. We do agree on the ESEE6!!

    If this was all you had ... you'd be damn sure as hell kissing it for all it can do for you! You can definitely light a fire off that Ferro ... you can also use that stone to keep your only serious blade sharp for all the work you'll need to be doing around camp to keep fire and give yourself some shelter! It's a gimmick until the shit hits the fan ... then it becomes life saving.

    You called the fire steel "gimmicky" ... but then you said in an emergency situation good luck using it.... one thing all the you tube so called pro gear reviewers seem to forget is that it's for just that "an emergency" .. in a perfect situation you'd have a lighter and a can of gas...

  • @jameshill6872

    I thought i was the only one who felt like the signal was too expensive for what it offered. It is strange how a Bear Grylls sharpener and lanyard whistle on a knife sheath was gimmicky but a barely there firesteel/whistle combo is considered to be worthwhile on a Leatherman costing almost twice as much.

  • @simonh6371
    @simonh6371 3 года назад

    Totally with you on this and actually I have posted similar comments under another review of this. Firstly why would you want or need a bitset on an outdoor survival tool? Trees don't have screws and nuts, furthermore even if you did you're liable to lose little bits in the woods. Secondly the firestarter and whistle are gimmicky and you'd be better off with a full on firesteel.
    The best price I could get one of these for here in the UK is £135 which is $170. For less than half of that I can get a Rebar, and with the rest of the money buy a shedload of firesteel, sharpener etc. and in fact I'm pretty sure my comprehensive belt pouch survival kit containing poncho, mylar sleeping bag, canteen and cup, MREs etc. etc. comes out at that price. Experienced outdoorsmen prefer to put together their own survival kits in general, even if they end up spending more on them.
    Seems like Leatherman decided to emulate and upstage Gerber with their Bear Grylls range, even down to the appearance with the black/grey/orange colour scheme.
    Having said that, they were absolutely right to release this product as there is definitely a market for it , I can see young outdoors enthusiasts being totally thrilled to get one of these as a present, and I have no doubt it sells a lot. Just not for me. No worries though as like I said there are plenty of other options out there.

I EDC a Surge and this pales in comparison, especially when it's at the (almost) same price. Those little ferro rods are a joke. You see those on $5 "survival" paracord bracelets on eBay. So after my Wave broke after 7 months or so (pliers snaped in two trying to bend a medium sized nail), Im not the greatest fan of LM. Thats not to say LM makes good quality, I might have been unlucky. I went for Victorinox for my new MT, and Ive never looked back. BUT, I can see where LM is comming from here. The sharpener is not ment to compliment other knifes, its ment for the MT it self. Its a standalone tool in myh opinnion. Yeah, it will never rival setups with fixed knifes and dedicated sharpeners, but it will make due as a stand alone (bearly...or so, but thats their intention). If you arer limitited to onlu this, then great. Otherwise, spend your money on a more complex setup. Sorry for my bad English though!

      John Davis you've got to be the only person that thinks that about the Surge. Especially about the scissors. Thats a lot of peoples favorite part sense there're not dinky like the Wave's. I cant imagine what else on there that doesn't work "all that well". I guess its just subjective opinion, both mine and yours.

    • @YankeeWoodcraft
      @YankeeWoodcraft 7 лет назад +2

      The Surge scissors are the first really usable scissors that I've experienced on a multitool. I don't expect them to be as good as a pair of a tailor's shears or a barber's scissors, but for what they are, scissors on a multitool, they've really impressed me.
      As for the weight, I don't find it to heavy, but then again, I made my living with tools. It's heavier than others, but it's the lightest tool of it's kind with all it's capabilities so it's actually 'light'. When we compare weights, we have to take those capabilities into account.
      For example, an AWD Honda minivan is going to weigh more than a FWD Honda Minivan, but is it "too heavy" if it can do much more? No, it's the weight it's supposed to be.

Having said that, I agree with you and while this thing has a great premise and idea behind it, it is WAY to gimmicky. Especially for the price.

    I 100% agree with you on how gimmicky the Leatherman Signal is. The fact that it costs as much as my Leatherman Surge and then when you compare to list of features they offer, the Signal has no justifiable reason to cost that much. I'd rather go hiking with my 12.5 oz. multi-tool combined with the bit kit and some jigsaw blades than shed all that extra weight on something I can't see myself relying solely on. Though, I do wish Leatherman could make a Wave or Charge that has an awl.

The bottom line is. I grew up in the great outdoors with my father. Uncle's brothers, camping fishing. Hunting, and have you several multi tools? The Leatherman is an excellent tool. It's like a guy having a Mercedes and a guy having a BMW. The difference is just maybe one has more features or more horsepower depending on which 1 you buy. They do the job that they're designed to do I just don't like people when they do reviews.They criticize every little thing. The whistle blows loud. The guy who is demonstrating is not blowing the whistle you can have pros. And cons of anything. The bottom line is the tool works. Just buy it and use it if you don't like it. Don't buy it, but they make it awesome. Great product that actually works. I use my tools all the time and they worked well. I just hate the negative comments or the guy in the video and you know I'm. He does a good job stop criticizing everything.
