You're welcome.
Thanks
Do you see the future often?
You are a god
"I don't like combo edges, I always prefer plain edge." So Skeletool CX, problem solved
I have a CX and I love it.
@@ItachiUchiha-yz5nn me too im pretty new to the EDC world so I'm glad that my first buy wasn't a bad one.
Def best option. Been carrying a cx for years.
I have the normal skeletool topo and I love sharpening knifes and has a professional sharpening kit that uses a belt sander type device so sharpening the serrated blade isn’t a problem but I also enjoy stone sharpening and you can’t really sharpen the serrated blade with a stone so if you can’t get a professional sharperi would recommend the cx
Same man I want a straight edge I hate serrated edges if they had a second blade that was serrated deal but I don't want or need it.i agree
Really like the comparison, good job on describing the handling issue i have found with many multitools, I have been edc'ing the leatherman wingman because it was really inexpensive a few years back and love the scissors for the work i do, wish it had the interchangeable bits though. Hope your pup heals up soon
Your review is really well done. Thanks for the side by side comparison, I’ll be getting the leatherman
Great review of both. picked up a Skeletool the other week at Home Depot. I love its size and weight perfect EDC carry
I've used the skeletool cx for EDC for over 5 years now and it has held up beautifully, the black coating is still there and hasn't worn noticeably, not a spec of rust, everything is still nice and tight. The only reason I would consider getting a new one is because mine is the original style where they made the cx a combo blade and now the cx has a straight blade which I prefer, but after 5 years of reliable service I couldn't ask for better tool (and I'm glad I sprung for the nice finish and 154CM blade).
I have the cx too I waited until i could find one with 154 over the 420. with 154 theres no debate on which one of these would be better. I see pros and cons of both but id still pick the cx but the reactor is only $23 so if someone didnt want to pay $90 its a solid option
I've carried a Skeletool CX for the last couple years. It also hangs from a belt loop, using the carabiner, very effectively. I haven't dropped it yet, through all kinds of conditions. In Canada, they come with a Robertson bit, instead of Phillips. I actually bought a couple more & gifted them to co-workers.
I've been EDCing this skeletool for years. I dont mind the combo blade. The serations save my edge when I'm cutting paracord. Great video
SOLD, "Skeletool" it is, thanks for the FANTASTIC REVIEW!
Good comprehensive review. Really gave me an understanding of the quality involved, and the performance of the bitholder on the SOG was the deal breaker for me.
The warranty on the Leatherman was a dealbreaker for me.
I carry both a Benchmade Barrage and the Leatherman skeletool. I started out making sure I had both in my EDC bag, slowly I noticed that if I needed to leave my EDC bag in the car and had to pocket either the Barrage or the Skeletool, I'd grab the Skeletool, because the knife is very useful and sturdy, I would have the utility, and cutting ability of my quality Benchmade. Just my voice to the choir of this nice vid thanks!
Hey great review as usual! I was in the middle of typing a comment to point you toward the Skeletool CX (I'm of the same mind as you, that a well-tuned plain edge is superior to a combo), and then you mentioned it in the last minute. I'm a fan of 154CM, so I'll be excited for you to check it out.
I have a skeletool CX with 154cm straight blade..have had it for a few years and absolutely love it
154cm knife?
i think he meant 154mm
154CM = S30V Steel.
@@ichhci1931 154CM does not equal S30V steel, S30V is better. Leatherman do offer one tool with S30V but it's pricey as Hell.
Great video - I've been carrying a Leatherman Freestyle as my main knife for a couple of months now (Skeletool minus the screwdriver/bottle opener). I haven't been able to go to a single tool with it though, as I find I miss my other tools (file/scissors/saw). Carrying the Freestyle + a SAK Ranger has worked out great for me as it gives me a good knife/plier + all the other tools I'd have on a normal multitool (Scissors/Awl/Saw/File/Screwdrivers/Bottle Openers/yada/yada) for things that I use less often. The Freestyle handles almost everything I do, and then I can reach a bit deeper in my pocket if something rarer comes along. I switch to my Victorinox Swisstool + some fixed blade if I "go heavy" on tools.
I like the leatherman lock system for the bits. Not solely depending on a magnet like the SOG or the Gerber Centerdrive.
I appreciate the detailed review.
+The Late Boy Scout I enjoyed your review as well!
Nice review, I have carrying the skeletool about 8 to 9 years now and always put it on a belt loop. No issues use it allot still looks new, very well made. I would buy another one if I ever lost this one. The only issue, like you, is the serrated blade. But not really a big deal breaker. USA +++. Very durable.
Exactly!
I have a collection of multi tools. Leatherman, Gerber, SOG, just to name a few. My personal EDC is the newest Leatherman Surge. Great blades, and i never knew how useful the scissors could be until i started using them. i used to carry a tool and a pocket knife, now just the surge with the pocket clip. Sometimes i carry the MUT. but mostly the Surge, just the most useful of my 2 dozen multi tools. Even though i have a few high end SOG tools, it turns out i am not a fan of SOG.
I'm going the Surge route too, reasons also being that it's a very heavy duty tool, and it has tools which I don't on my Victorinox Swisschamp, and not too many that repeat on the Swisschamp.
To most people I might carry too many tools with me but I think a Surge and a Swisschamp is a great combo.
it feels like i have a pocketknife in my pants which is just awesome - wow great analysis... so valuable.
Good review, I have the plain edge Skeletool which I love.
Great review. I picked up the Skeletool last year, seems that I made the right choice.
I love my wingman had it for 4 or 5 years now, works well for scouting purposes. I lost it once in a field while camping looked for hours that night it poured as well didn't find it till the next morning no rust, wiped it down and have it to this day.
Now we are talking
how is that wingman? I really want one, it's between skeletool and wingman for me.
Have been considering going to multi for pliers but I carry the RAT2 with the SAK Harvester (discontinued).... my go to EDC use knife blade is the pruner on the harvester. The hook or talon style blade for piercing, box opening, store packages, wire separation, for removing (stripping) burial wire is hard to beat. For me to go to a one tool option the multi would need (2) blades with one being a pruner and need a wood saw plus awl. I just do not see not carrying a SAK, thus will always be 2 units but appreciate the time and honest review
I am a long time fan of Leatherman tools. I EDC 2 of them on my belt, as well as a micra on my wheelchair tool cluster. but I will always also carry a folder, when I am doing knife work, I like having a dedicated folder, and what I carry is a CKRT Hammond Cruiser. I prefer the longer, and heavier blade for cutting tasks. this was a good comparison, and when finances allow, I would like to pick a skelitool up. I do agree with you, I am a plain edge blade guy, not a fan of serrations. thanks for the information..
Very through review, think I'll be adding the Leatherman to by overnight pack. Thanks!
You prolly dont care at all but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot my account password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Dillon Orlando instablaster :)
@Declan Kenzo I really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Declan Kenzo it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out !
@Dillon Orlando glad I could help xD
I have been really looking hard for a smaller knife based tool and was about to pull the trigger on this one over the Freestyle, Crucial, Bivy, etc until I saw this and The Late Boy Scout review. Now I think I'll wait it out to what SOG does with this tool moving forward and just keep using my Tool Logic SL plier tool for now. Any suggestions on some good EDC tools?
Thanks for your views! Good review! Thanks
+Survival Zone Africa No problem
I always like gideonstactical's comparison in terms of user's practicality aspects
All of sogs gear pliers have that travel problem with the handles. I have carried the Leatherman Skeletool cx for a long time which is at a higher price point by bit, but it is lighter than the skeletool and has a straight edge. that made it worth it to me. great comparison.
I started EDC-ing the Skeletool CX about 1 year ago. I like it because it has a 154cm plain edge knife thats as sharp as a scalpel. The skeletool replaced my folder knife and Gerber multi tool. Lighter and more efficient. IMO
Dang it Aaron! Now you got me on Amazon again filling up my cart lol. Great video as always man.
Thanks so much! And thanks for using the links! Helps the channel a lot!
I bought the Skeletool at Home Depot for $19.99! Of course I got 2!
+jrrcmd Sick!
jrrcmd which f ing home depot tell me now
I checked online...They're 29 right now in illinois by the looks of it
That's half amazons price idk what hte fuck is going on there
Desmond moon bear *fucking
How? They are $80+ everywhere I've seen them! :(
I'm in the market for a new multi tool larger blade and changeable wire cutters teeth hope one of these has it. My multiplyer is getting old I love it but it's time to retire my Gerber multiplyer. And your the guy to watch because I agree on your knife selection and thinking process
I guess I could just take the leatherman instead of the folder, although, I like having them. The old addage of needing them and not having them comes to mind
So they only have three base tools including knife, pliars, and a two bit screwdriver,. I was thinking about the Leather man mut to do bushcraft and what not for edc would that be a liable option.
Great video!
You should do a video comparing multitools vs Swiss Army knives.
Weedeater line is a GREAT cutting test I am a landscaper and I have to use the scissors on my leatherman I have the echo black diamond line from home depot
I have incorporated my Skeletool into my EDC but I also still carry my Benchmade Fact or Mini Loco Incase I need a real knife!
I find the Skeletool to be a great general EDC!
I use the Carabiner on my belt loop for when i have my phone in my pocket. And my Hinder Xm18 in my other pocker. I have the Skeletool CX and that 154 CM plain edge blade is mint on the CX and that Black n stainless look is awesome. Good Video
Do the leatherman bits grip screws well? I don’t like that you can only use leatherman brand bits where some other brands I could use Makita or any other brand that I know grips well and easy to purchase.
With the release of the CX and its better blade steel, the skeletool becomes an even better replacement for your folder.
I bought the skeletool cx from tx tool crafters for my brothers birthday. its the same as a stock skeletool cx but it has a gorgeous Damascus blade. it really isn't necessary, but it makes it a little more special.
Most the problems you mention with the SOG are tradeoffs and minor problems, it is a compromise for the size and weight, it is about compactness.
Forrest Gee - actually use the tool. Blood-blisters from being repeatedly pinched by the tool and severe hand fatigue from having to squeeze the Reactor so hard to keep the bit from spinning while driving a fastener is a huge issue. Another benefit to the Leatherman is when it is unfolded in the driving position it works like an actual screwdriver as it was ergonomically designed to work that way. SOG multi-tools are for amateurs. Anyone doing real work will ditch it after trying a Swisstool, Gerber or especially a Leatherman. I say this with using these in trade work professionally for over ten years and having quickly ditched three different SOG tools on three separate occasions for being low quality in terms of usability.
Thanks Gideon. I've been intersted in some of the new SOG multitools, less so with Leatherman...I was underwhelmed with their latest with the whistle and sharpenener (and ferro rod) :)
+Rich Allfieldnohit No problem. I will do the signal, though I think it is a little gimmicky
have you reviewed the kabar zk Kahron folder? I can't seem to find any in-depth reviews like yours and I'm thinking about getting it for edc
How dare you take the last Coke away from a pregnant lady!
should've been like "I opened this for you!"
I wear the Skeletool daily on my belt loop, it has become a part of me.
das hasguns I know the feeling. I feel naked if my Wave isn’t clipped onto my pocket.
Which Skeletool is that? Because mine does not fly out like that, it's smooth but I need to move it the entire way
For me if I am going to use pliers I need full pliers with soft grips but these are both neat. I like that the new skeletool will be in green.
God bless that fast forward option.
Great review. There is another Skeletool model designated "CX", which utilizes better 154CM steel on the all straight-edge knife blade. Add carbon fiber inlays and $30 to the price, its my casual EDC. Thanks for the channel!
Can't go wrong with the CX!
Great review, much appreciated !
Thanks so much!
I have the Skeletool CX! use it a lot and love it so much. only problem is learning to put a sharp edge on the 154cm blade on my worksharp field sharpener :/
Mervin Ling - I'm no blade expert but I also have problems maintaining an edge on the CX. 154cm blades in general, actually. The S30V edge on my Charge TTI takes and keeps a razor edge very well, however.
Use Sharpal pocket sharpener works great. 6 functions
VERY cool video, I love the comparisons you make. I'm quite a multi-tool geek too. They're just so cool and useful. I have way more Leathermans than I need. Actually, I have one SOG multi-tool. My EDC is a rebar, micra, and a Fenix Flashlight. Personally I wish Leatherman would stop putting the universal bit driver on so many tools. I have a had times where it fails to reach screws.
SevereTstormFan - get the bit driver they sell
do you have any reviews for multitasker tools? tnx
Well played Sir!
Recently purchased a Sog Reactor and sent it back immediately. It looked and felt too small (kid sized) and flimsy and the assisted main blade wouldn't fully deploy on it's own. I also saw a video where there is a problem with the bit spinning when clamped correctly between the plier jaws. Just didn't feel like a man's tool to me and I wouldn't trust it to do any real work. More of a gimmicky toy. If they had made this full sized with a bigger knife blade and sturdier then I think it would have been a big seller. As it is, I personally think it's a fail. Sog also really needs to come up with replaceable wire cutters like some Leatherman's & Gerber's have. Listening Sog? Looks cool though...
Great review!
Check out the Skeletool CX for a plain edge and 154 CM steel blade!
+Bob Smith
That's a huge score, best edc tool I've ever owned
@@TheAustinCarmichael2 I also think about buying the CX
Is it worth the higher price then the normal version?
@@---Michael--- in my opinion, yea it's worth the extra coin, depends on how much value you attribute to the better blade steel, because other than that your only paying for a little carbon fiber insert
@@TheAustinCarmichael2Yeah I care about the steel and also it has a blade without surations and it's black carbon fiber xD
I'd really like to love the sog because I like the design and the features but they need to make some improvements.
Classic wife maneuver! 😂 great vid 👍🏼
excellent comparison review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Does the bit have good retention in the storage holder of the reactor , I keep losing the one in my skeletool.
Hmm. I have no problem with it on my wave+. I would've thought they would have the same retention. If I have any problems with it, it's that sometimes I can't get it out! 😂
id love to see a s30v flat ground blade on the leatherman, love my charge.
Cool!
+midwestoutdoorsman I think they had 154cm as an option on the Skeletool. Same steel used by Emerson and was considered THE top steel previous to S30V. I like 154cm a lot. Has a great balance of ease of sharpening, strength, edge holding, corrosion resistant, just a great steel.
They may still offer it.
+schlooonginator They probably do. The Skeletool has a another variant. It's called the Skeletool CX. It's a bit pricier though.
Lowes has the skeletool for 25 I picked 2 up and they are a great piece of gear. I carry mine as an EDC
+Bryson allen sweet!
Hey cool vid, what's the name of those camo gloves you're using?
I think the skeletool is the best pocket multi tool with the external blade and easy carry. It can replace a main pocket knife. I had one and I forget what happened to it.
I have been edc,ing the skeletool since xmas, its nice. But I still carry 2 folders.... Blade addiction I guess :(
Wow. This is the only guy I've ever seen flip a Skeletool. It's like mind blown.
The gears add clamping pressure for the pliers
Hi man, I have Skeletool for two years now and I wouldn't change it for anything else. I have it in my EDC system and I just love this tool. But as you mentioned it's not good enough for hiking or some survival action. So I'm looking right now for another Letherman for more heavy-duty/survival needs. But for EDC in city is Skeletool THE BEST!!!
Jan Tschernoster try the Signal or my everyday work horse the Super Tool 300 I plan on getting the signal for outdoors but I just take my ST 300 right now. Both are great buys
P4 or Charge TTI
Random Question, what pants are those?
WHAT?! Why is are the the angle of the arms on that SOG so large?! Who's hand did they make that for, Galactus?!
Trying to choose A edc multi tool is really hard each company has good ideas -probably just gotta pick one and start field testing and decide over time -seems the LM won this round
This also goes to show that a us made product can still be competitive in price, while being superior quality. we need to bring back the jobs to the us like keen has started to do with some of there boots and shoes.
Leather man every time
Great review 👍🏻
really perceptive--thanks!
No problem, glad it helped!
Is it still possible to get the Plainedge replacement blades for the letterman?
There were even damascus blades somewhere on the web
You can use the bit extender too for the skeletool. I own the Surge so I had to get the accessories lol. Bit it would be awesome if leatherman made a ratchet bit. Pistol grip ratchet would be mint.
Leatherman has a ratchet extender available now
They do have a ratchet bit now
@@batman19763 I bought one as soon as it came out. Cheers
My experience with Leatherman makes me scared of them. Had a handle on a multitool collapse, as they are reputed to have a great warranty I thought no big deal. But Leatherman declined the warranty replacement, and I was out a c-note. Haven’t purchased another one of their products since. For those curious, they insisted the damage was not a defect, that I had applied too much force. Even though I insisted, truthfully, that I had squeezed the handle with one hand trying to clamp down on a bolt to remove it. I’d try a SOG over a Leatherman any day.
Sog got stronger pliers thats why it dont need longer arm also is it onehand opening om this? If so i take sog. I have the skeletool already
I'm a fan of leatherman multi tools and it's Made in USA I own 4 different kinds of leatherman tools and I wanna buy one more surge multitool.
I like how u have guns ammo and money on the table but she only cares about u drinking the coke xD
Just a quick two cents, the skeletons cx that I own has a 154cm blade
Also the new ones are not combo edge
The Skeletool is my next purchase. For me I was looking for a good EDC tool to replace my PST and yes I still EDC a PST. Like you I am going for the CX (maybe the RX) with its 154CM blade. That’s going to check the box for a knife with a more premium blade steel. Also there’s an aftermarket hammer attachment for the Skeletool that mimics the Signal’s function. You can extend the Skeletools capabilities by a mod to the Surge exchangeable file and saw. Will I replace carrying a larger blade for EDC, for the most part no. Could I and might carry the Skeletool as my only EDC? It nice to have that option if I choose. Aaron, thanks for the review and confirmation I am the right path there brother! God bless.
Id recommended the new leatherman bond it has the Same toolset as the PST but improved
Where do you find hammer mod?
@@batman19763 so I went with the RX but never did the hammer attachment because I bought the MUT long tool set which can be used with the RX closed and adding the hammer would have negated that option. Btw I don’t know if you can get the MUT tool set anymore so the hammer might be a better choice for an available add on.
Great ladder match.
I have the same Cold Steel recon 1!
wow...great vid . tnx
Try whittling with a skeletool for 2hrs - back rips hands, front null issue unless holding wrong (deathgrip), can reverse sog handles for wide grip pliers, can strip wire + crimp, compound leverage + magnets + hex shape = "bits spin" is nonsense.
Skeletool CX. One-handed plain blade and carbon fiber (not that it does anything other than look cool). Although I typically carry a Juice Pro on weekdays and a Surge on weekends.
I belt carry a Charge TTi and pocket a folder, at the moment a Cold Steel Spartan. I don't really notice the weight of them.
Nice
+gideonstactical what brand of pants are you wearing, they look awesome. also the s.o.g looks pretty but I doubt it could hold up.
I used to edc a standard Skeletool and quit because the blade steel was complete and total garbage. I liked everything else but couldn't get over the blade steel, plus I do not like combo edges. I might one day try the plain edged 154CM version but I gave up EDCing the big multi tools and found I haven't missed one thing about them. My PM2, BM 940, 710, and 585 have been flawless EDCers.
was there something wrong with the dog's leg around 6:20?
Well he has to test the blades somehow /s
I wish the Skeletool had the Juice's scissors. Even that Squirt has scissors. To me, I find myself using the knife first, pliers second and the screw drivers third and then the scissors. But given the option at the end of the video of the folder and multitool combo vs just the multitool, I am going for the stand alone folder and a secondary multitool. The combo multitool that omits the scissors is the deal breaker for me.
I found it!! Thanks!!
No problem!
Cheers Mate!
I understand your premise of going from one tool to two, but I actually would prefer to keep two, but eliminate the redundancy of the blade. I would prefer that there be an option for an alternate tool on the Multi-tool (like a file or saw) instead of the knife.
KAM1138a - a full serrated blade on a Skeletool would be a neat feature as they work better for hard use on rope/line/cardboard/gaskets, etc... A real blade is tough to replace. Serrated blades are more 'utilitarian' and les threatening to people in work environments.
I can see why that would work for some people. I just like carrying a
dedicated knife, and would prefer a different option on the multi-tool.
I like and support the idea of having many options.
KAM1138a - exactly, a dedicated knife paired with a serrated blade on the Leatherman is a good combo. You can use the Leatherman blade on rough stuff and the dedicated blade for more average daily tasks.
When you’re talking about getting a good grip on the pliers and how you don’t get a good grip with the SOG because the bit holder is too thin. You didn’t hold it the same way you held the Skeletool. For the SOG You had the knife side against your palm, but for the Skeletool you did the opposite. I think the majority of your problem can be remedied if you just reversed the SOG in your hand? I have a Skeletool that I think carrying since they very first released it, like almost 10 years ago I think. And I don’t have an issue if I hold the pliers either way. It’s so I’m assuming the same can be sad about the SOG.
I loved the SOG at first because of the spring assisted blade opening. Seems like leatherman wins in all other areas though. If leatherman would incorporate the spring assisted blade open with some of their better models like the sidekick it would be awesome.
