That little clip is to lock the tool in the closed position. The Signal is one of my favorites. You made your fire with the Signal a whole lot quicker than I did! That fatwood is good stuff.
I carried the Leatherman Skeletool for 4 years at least every day. And I was attracted to the signal but I hesitated in buying it because I figured it was going to be heavier or bulkier and I saw some reviews on RUclips saying the firestarter was too small and the knife sharpener too was too small and that it was built gimmicky ( I forget the word they used ) basically cheap . I’m glad I bought it for myself for my birthday because I love it . Not only is the knife sharpener great it also gives me something to do when I’m bored I love sharpening knifes 😂!!!! And it works great ! And the firestarter also works great and I love starting fires too 🔥!!! I bought the cobalt blue with the stainless steal . It would have been cooler if it was a Straight edge blade instead of the serrated . But It is extremely sharp and with the sharpener I got mine even more sharper ! And having serrations makes it even easier to cut thru rope and heavy material. And the knife sharpener is built with a V shape to sharpen the serrated part of the knife too . I love this knife . I will be carrying mine for years to come until leathermandesigns a better one … I almost was going to buy the Arc but it would have been bulkier . I think Leatherman is the best Multi Tools . And the Signal is my Everyday pocket knife .
A lot of people call this multitool a gimmick, but it's actually a really good edc tool that actually works to have as a backup to all your primary hiking/camping gears. It's really a great pocket friendly survival multitool. I really like this tool a lot.
Sure wish they'd replace the pliers with a nice sturdy pair of scissors though, and the bit driver with something else as well. You'd find more use with a pair of scissors inside a forest than a pair of pliers, don't you think? And who would need a bit driver inside a jungle anyway?
@@MrDosonhai I like to pair this multitool with the Leatherman Style CS for the scissors. The bit driver, I have found use in tightening screws on my other hiking equipment or tightening screws on some blade folders. Found use for it for fishing equipment as well.
@@MrDosonhai I'd probably trade the can opener for scissors. I've been pairing it with the Leatherman Micra, which has small scissors that have worked fine while camping.
Glad to see Leatherman still innovating. This one looks like a winner. At this price point ( I was expecting higher) this item seems like a good option. Especially for a first time buyer.
Hey there, great vid. I ended up purchasing the signal due to your review. BTW the little clip you couldn't figure out is used to lock the tool when it's closed! Thanks for sharing.
I was always under the impression that was a nail nick for deploying the saw. I reckon it could also be for removing hooks. The wave and supertool saws have it too and they’re not really “outdoor” tools like the signal is supposed to be.
Woohoo that's awesome!!!! I needed one more thing for my oldest son. Heck maybe one for each of us lolol. I still have a original Leatherman over fourty year's old !!! Thanks much and blessings 😇
meh, I cant hold an edge on my Gerber assisted, and neither can my sharpener. ;-/ im definitely picking one of these signal's up now. i wish i knew how big it felt in your pocket?
Love the small how to start a fire tutorial lol it’s actually always great to see that these tools work live and this was a good video. I purchased my own in the topo color
I'm not an outdoor fella but I bought this leatherman for work. I needed something with a carabiner for easy carry. I went with 3rd party parts to replace the ferro rod/whistle and sharpener. Allows me to carry more bits. Great multitool .... good weight ..... and plenty of carrying options.
Great review. I have used the original Leatherman Super Tool for as long as they have been out (25 - 30 yrs maybe); I think you may have shown me a reason to finally purchase a new multi-tool, even though my Leatherman still works flawlessly.
I like it. You cannot go wrong with Leatherman. My Dad taught me to buy quality tools or else I would be buying more than one of the same tool. Great advice. I have watched you start so many fires with that same piece of Fatwood. It works every time. Brian, hope you play another song for Christmas on your guitar. Happy Holidays.
I just started using the Gerber center-drive. Love the fact it take standard size bits and i dont have to buy special bits. FYI i do own many Leatherman tools as well. Wave, Rebar and wingman (for the office). I like the outdoorsy feel of the signal...
Well, i did it.. I got my eagle rank Tuesday night. Also leatherman is the best. I have the original wave and it hasn't failed me since. I might have to buy me a new leatherman now.
Survival On Purpose thanks, it was a very rocky road. I procrastinated alot and swimming was very hard so I finally got swimming lessons last year. I also felt like i wanted to drop out a few times as i felt useless and wouldn't make eagle. Luckily for me i want to be like my dad. He got his eagle, and loves being a firefighter/paramedic.
You can also add a 42 piece toolkit that gives you lots more bits for the screwdriver bit holder. It comes in 2 flat carriers that fit just right into the carry pouch behind the elastic band inside it.
Something I found out: I like the locking blade feature. My original Leatherman didn't have that. But in the UK, when Leatherman added locking blades they made their tool illegal.
Only illegal to carry in public ''without good reason''. However if you're camping, bushcrafting, hunting or other outdoor pursuits you arguably ''have good reason''. The same way as we can buy all types of fixed blade knives here. Doesn't mean you're going to have one on your belt when you go to the supermarket.
Great review Bryan :) I like the Signal a lot. Has been on my shopping list since it was released. Definitely going to get one someday. By this far my favorite Leathermans have been original Supertool, Sidekick ( more less the essentials in a compact package, great for camping) and Rebar ( old school but my favorite " workhorse") It is great that they put the replaceable cutters in that and having firesteel ( small but way better than nothing ) and sharpener is just awesome. Thank you for sharing :) Big thumbs up!
Another great review! I have been looking to replace my old Gerber multi tool which has served me well for many, many years of EDC. I think you have narrowed my replacement choices considerably. Thanks for a great channel with EXCELLENT content. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas!
if I carry my super tool 300, and I by golly been forcing myself to hook it on my belt since mid racing season. if the Signal is similar size, I don't see it as a pocket clip deal. I tried a Wingman in that capacity. now it lives on my tactical shotgun rig. permanently.
Yeah, my Leatherman Wave is a great tool, but its too darned heavy. I just ordered the Signal for mobile edc, and will use the Wave at my desk. Thank you, my friend.
Be careful with the screwdriver bit. My Leatherman has the same style bits and holder and both bits have now fallen out due to poor pressure on the retaining clip and gone missing entirely. I would much rather have the old style fixed versions.
Another nice video. Personally I'm a Gerber multitool fan but this does look nice, and has lots of of good reviews, in fact I don't think I've seen a bad word about it. Maybe I'll treat myself after Christmas. Thanks for all the time you spend to share the videos Brian, best wishes for you and your family for the Christmas holidays. Regards Wayne
Cool, but two major misses... serrated blade and no scissors. Right now my go-to woods Leatherman is the Free P4.. its got all the woodsy parts, and its smaller/lighter than most of the others. I dont know about the rest of you, but I've never needed pliars in the woods, nice to have, but not required.. with that in mind the Victorinox Ranger 78 has an awesome blade and saw, both are around 4" and they run circles around any Leatherman ever made, better yet the combo equals a 5-6" fixed blade.. especially for notching, fitting, the usual "bushcraft" stuff.
Nice idea, but the tool needs tweaking. Right now, it looks like a gimmick. In my opinion, the knife should have no serrations, & the ferro rod somehow needs to be bigger.
Great video! I llve Leatherman tools and have several. Problem is I have to save up for them as they are expensive but I will save up for that one. Merry Christmas
Assuming you're already carrying a knife or two, a folding saw, several fire-steels, a whistle, a sharpening stone... THEN which Leatherman is best for survival?
I'd agree with Supertool 300 or if you want a slightly more compact version, the Rebar. Both old school Leathermans. You don't really want or need a bitset in the woods, trees don't have screws and bolts and the bits are easy to lose.
I know what you mean. Maybe it's because US multitools are more expensive this side of the Atlantic, because here in the UK the best price I can get a Signal for is £135 = $170. On the other hand I can get a Spirit X for £80 = $100, or a Spirit Plus with ratchet, bits, leather sheath for £105 = $130. Having said that my choice for bushcraft / survival would be ''none of the above''. Imo a bitset isn't what you need or want in the outdoors, you don't find screws and sockets on trees and furthermore you can easily lose the bits in the woods. My choice for bushcraft/survival would be more old school, the Rebar. Less than half the price of the Signal. For the remaining money I can get a Mora fixed blade for batonning, bigger ferro rod, a poncho, mylar sleeping bag, canteen cup, whistle and a whole lot more survival kit. I think LM marketing decided to emulate and upstage Gerber with their Bear Grylls range. Sure it's better quality but experienced outdoorsmen prefer to assemble their own survival kits rather than buy a ready made solution. But for sure the Signal is a hit with young guys.
@@simonh6371 We pretty much agree. If I were going to be in the Wilderness and not need to mess with mechanical or electrical devices I could get by with a Victorinox Camper knife and a Mora Classic 2. Using the money saved to purchase a small to medium sized folding saw and some of the other toys you mentioned. However, in a true survival situation I will have to mess with some mechanical or electrical devices so I’m keeping my Victorinox Spirit X. 😀
@@ROE1300 Actually I've used that combo - well the Hiker instead of Camper, and a Mora Companion - for wild camping and bushcrafting and they were a winning combo, saw with the Vic and baton with the Mora, no problem. Everyone says they don't like partially serrated blades. For general utility hiking and camping, they are useful. I do wish that Leatherman would copy Victorinox, and put the serrations on the tip-end. That leaves a plain edge in close by the handle, for whittling and push-cutting. These are not weapons, not "tactical," and Leatherman serrations, while not quite as good as Victorinox, are fine, and long-lasting. They sharpen easily--but yes sharpening them takes a bit more time for sure. I use a half or quarter round ceramic rod. BTW, the Wave is a gem, except not for bushcrafters. No awl. Not that bad of a video, as bad as that particular multi tool. The only good thing with my signal so far is that two sides pockets, and can store the broken blade, the broken whistle, and the Rusty sharpeners. All the other things still working, but there is no more space for storage...........
Actually, that is exactly what this tool is to me. Just a few good quality tools I will use. I really like the ferro rod, whistle and sharpener. I think they fit the intended purpose very well. They have many other models if you don't like this one.
I was regular army . We were on a mission. SIX OF US !!! All 6 leatherman pieces of excrement broke during the mission. We told our company commander about what happened. He got our order changed. Is Your arm ok it looks like You got cut or scratch really bad. In the bend of Your arm.
Thanks. I’m fine.
Not that bad of a video, as bad as that particular multi tool. The only good thing with my signal so far is that two sides pockets, and can store the broken blade, the broken whistle, and the Rusty sharpeners. All the other things still working, but there is no more space for storage...........
Hmmm
Instead of a bunch of doodads that u can’t really use i’d like to see a few good quality tools that u can.
Actually, that is exactly what this tool is to me. Just a few good quality tools I will use. I really like the ferro rod, whistle and sharpener. I think they fit the intended purpose very well. They have many other models if you don't like this one.
15o$ you BETTER enjoy it!!! Lmaooo I'll stick to a $25 thags just as good xP
I was regular army . We were on a mission. SIX OF US !!! All 6 leatherman pieces of excrement broke during the mission. We told our company commander about what happened. He got our order changed. Everyone in the unit bought Swiss Army Knives . The Swiss Army Knife I have now has been my EDC for about 18 years .
Hmmm.
its gimmicky though.i agree with gideons tactical
player 1 gimmicks !? Oh you and gedeon are Right. Don need those whistle , diamond and little fire rod. Just smash rock to make fire and rub you blade to on the rock to sharpen it.! I think you both don't get the point. Yes you can carry a better sharpener or a better fire rod in your kit but what are you gonna do if you lose or get stole and only have what is in your pocket. And I think you are better to have a whatever whistle than yell like a girl
I think everything works as designed, and I like it
Survival On Purpose same for me
Martin Martin i dunno what ur smoking but why would i need a rock as a sharpener?
Think player 1 think hard and the answer will come !
Please lern more abuot it before making a vid, just a tip
I am going to resist pointing put the irony in your comment. Have a Merry Christmas
Ahh...no beard
