  • It is said that Parvati’s penance to marry lord Shiva, lasted 3000 long years. She left her family, her kingdom and went to Tapovana to meditate & win over his heart. Her penance was so powerful that the gods were afraid that the world wouldn’t survive it and so requested Shiva to visit her. But Lord Shiva always wanted to test her devotion. Towards the end, she almost gave up and decided to immolate herself.
I have interpreted this song from Parvati’s perspective where she decides to question Shiva before leaving, as to why he shows no empathy or compassion towards her. “You’re an ocean of compassion they say. You’re the one who saved the world by drinking the poison, when the ocean was churned by the Devas and Asuras. Balakrishna sings songs in praise of how you always forgive, no matter how many sins one commits. But why don’t you show any compassion towards me?”
Irakkam Varamal | Why don't you show compassion?
    Composed by Gopalakrishna Bharathi
Sung beautifully by Bombay Jayashree in Raag Behag
    Choreographed by Sandhya Muralidharan
