I used to sing this with gusto at school. It has a triumphant swing to it, militant but not military, triumphant but not triumphalist, proud but never arrogant, defiant but in no way embittered. It is one of my favourite hymns. Thank you for posting it.
Reminds me of my loving mum who passed away peacefully at 95 in 2022. Iam crying as I listen to this. She adored the Lord, and i am comforted by this song that she is finally enjoying eternity with her love. Alleluia!
Thanks so much for the upload. It is a magnificent hymn. Years ago, I found myself humming the tune but neither I nor my friends could identify it. Finally, I hummed the full melody for a brother who was a music leader. It took him several hours but soon found him again among many hundreds of people at a bible conference. He blurted out, "For All the Saints!" showing me the score with lyrics on his phone. And the years long mystery was solved. No apps ever identified it. I am a musician and a singer, so it wasn't bad humming. 😊
I understand. My mom was no saint but I will use this at my parents’ funeral. Who thee by faith before the world confessed? She was on TV for her ministry and spent much of her life doing those sorts of things. Another line is all are one. Let’s all remember that with all the vitriol. But in general this beautiful hymn is triumph over death.
I was tramping through the forest in New Zealand some time back, and I had been away from home for almost four days; a bad case of homesickness. Then right out of nowhere (Or perhaps a Certain Person might have had something to do with it!) this hymn popped into my head. I started to sing it, and after the third verse, although my body was still tramping on, my heart was soaring about a million miles overhead! What a wonderful, uplifting hymn, especially the last two verses! Praise be to God! Hallelujah!
This hymn was always included in the Church Service of the St.George's Day Parade of the Boy Scouts of St.Albans England in the late fifties/early sixties. Still truly inspiring even after sixty years. Always brings tears. Can't help it.
This video takes me back to March of 2016, when my precious mom died of cancer. This song was sung at her funeral. I remember the night before she died, I watched this same video several times, it provided comfort in a very low time. Videos like this are what I like to think RUclips was invented for. Thank you for a timeless video. I love you forever Mom. You are still missed, for sure.
A great hymnal by all standards, to the glory of God. I'm Catholic, but i first found it in the Methodist hymn book, MHB 832, before finding it in the Catholic Hymn book. It's a great hymn shared by Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists alike. I get positive goose bumps, and joy in my soul when i hear a good rendition of For All The Saints. Also reminds me of Inter-Colleges or Super Zonal Sports competition, as it happens to be the School anthem of a rival school called Mfantsipim School. The boys of Mfantsipim sung it all the same even when they were totally losing the sports competition to my alma mater, St. Augustine's College...lol.
I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (November 2, All Saints' Sunday), we sang this as our Opening Hymn. Ditto for me as I played it as the Closing Hymn at a local Lutheran Church that I filled in at. It is #422 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. And let us give thanks to those who have gone on before us.
(samira here) This wonderful hymn stirs the spirit, and we chose it for my mom's funeral. REGARDLESS of your particular liking or denomination: If you will, may the Most Holy Compassionate be with you, now and forever, and give you heart's comfort in your pain. May your dearly loved go forth in joy, and be led forth in peace, and may all the souls of those gone before rest in peace within the hands of the most compassionate one.
This was the processional for my college graduation in 1983 at a Christian college in Minnesota. I remember the majesty of the organ as we walked into the auditorium in our caps and gowns. Gave me “Holy Ghost Bumps.” Still does.
Remembering my father who also by faith confessed the name of Jesus and joined that great company " which no man can number" in 1958 on this day. (John 3 verse 16 )
On this, the Feast of All SAints, it is wonderful to hear this moving hymn presented with the splendor it deserves. Easily one of my favorite hymns ever!
I always eagerly await All Saints' Day or All Saints' Sunday at my US Episcopal church because we can sing this and process and do the whole deal. One of my very favorite hymns. Coming to the Episcopal Church as a very hard core Protestant (and yes, despite what some of the hierarchy says, the US Episcopal Church is still a Protestant church) it took me a long time to truly understand the Communion of Saints. TBTG that I now do.
I'm a Catholic but one of my favorite church memories was going to my friend's high Episocpal Church for All Saints and seeing the incredible procession with the whole choir and congregation singing For All The Saints with everything they had. It was truly moving.

Jacob, thank you for sharing this. It was very nicely done, with the lyrics and images. I found this version to be slightly slow.
