I don't think this is a huge issue right now but i am worried that in the future with the next gen nintendo console coming out, a lot of people will do this because they won't want to buy a new console. I am also worried a lot that nintendo will still stick with the portable consoles. I want a powerful console like a ps5 for nintendo games.
Would you be okay if it is portable 1080P, but does use DLSS upscaling to 4k when docked? IE PS4 quality graphics? I am at the point where I don't care if we have 4k if the games look decent and are fun. Nintendo IPs are more fun than any games on ps5 or xbox
While It's good to be aware of the situation i wouldn't worry too much about this tbh. If we're being real here the people who are hacking their switches aren't the type to go swooping into a gamestop to buy 2nd hand games or buying brand new games to clone then resell the cartridge. Not only are they unlikely to buy games in the first place the trade in value for games have been a scam for decades so buying a new/used game for $20-$60 then trading it back in for 3 dollars is going to be a rare occurrence at best.
I have serious doubts that this will ever become an issue. If Nintendo starts banning people with unmodded consoles and legitimate games that were bought used, they will just a) create an even bigger incentive for people to actually pirate their games and b) be liable for a lawsuit in various countries that have strong consumer protection laws. Also, it's kinda dumb to purchase a bunch of cartridges just to dump them, because if you're not going to keep the cartridge then your dumped file is still technically illegal and you might as well be downloading pirated copies off the internet, and if you want your unique certificate so you can go online with the dump you don't want other people using the same cartridge that you did. The MIG dumper is only ever practical for people who actually have a large physical collection and want to take their games on the go without carrying multiple cartridges.
It’s not “basically” piracy, it is piracy. I have nothing against piracy for people who choose to take that risk for themselves, but don’t just go selling pirated games to unsuspecting people when it can get their whole account banned. If you must sell them then sell them on eBay or something so you can fully disclose that to your customers.
Well I wasn't about to play semantics with the legal definition of "piracy" so that's why I said basically. 😅 I mean, if you copy your OWN game, then you sell the hard copy and keep the digital one, is that technically an act of piracy, or does it become some other type of crime? I dunno, probably not! Haha but that's where my head was at when I recorded this. Thanks for watching
I buy most of my games new from Amazon not always day one but sealed I don’t like how game stop opens the games and stores them separately from the case also if you buy a used game from them there is a risk of receiving one of those crappy after market game stop cases if they don’t have the display one it came with.
@@germainetaylor1757Exactly. I don't buy games from GameStop (except for day one releases). If you buy new, there's the risk that they send you an opened copy, and if you buy used they're often beat up and non complete. eBay is much better for used games, the sellers have to specify the exact condition of every copy.
I’ve stopped buying used games immediately when the dumper started shipping commercially. I can’t take that chance of my account or my switch getting banned. I believe used sales will need to have cartridge demonstrated at time of purchase. Online used sales should stop completely IMO. Until Nintendo finds a way to ban the dumpers.
There’s one thing I can think of is Nintendo let’s retailer store that the store pays Nintendo x amount to change the unique identifier to that cartridge game. Put it on a black list or reuse it for a different game when the person that buys it used will not have to worry about it but the person that sold it to GameStop will have to worry about it if they decide to go online.
Even if I did use that device to backup my game for that purpose. If I ever wanted to sell it I would wipe the backup from existence before selling it. But that would be the people that did it the right way even though it would be a grey area still. Because not everybody would do that.
People making multiple fakes are more likely to sell themselves online, some of the easiest tells is holding a real and fake in person, the fakes I've seen, their engraved logo on the back is blurry and not as sharp, and the metal strips had an orange solder over them. There was also a situation where people bought dirt cheap switch games and switched the label with higher tier titles like botw, mario odyssey then traded it in to gamestop
For this situation, someone would dump the original to use it digitally and sell the cart back so it looks exactly as it should, but if digital user and cart user are online at the same time nintendo will know it's been cloned
I remember there was a stretch when certain games like EA games and such mandated a one-time-use on line code to enable online play. They eventually dropped that.
At this point, I'm going to start hating on the pirates. They take video game piracy too far, they are very persuasive, and now those of us who don't want to pirate games will now suffer because of them.
I agree with you, More Crossing Minute. It's horrifying that Nintendo is banning used games for using MIG!🥶 God, I hope Nintendo doesn't reject physical games in the future, and I hope that the next-gen Nintendo console isn't the last physical system. That's my three worries about the next-gen Nintendo console, Denuvo/DRM, lack of backwards compatibility, and digital only console. Also, I think it's better for gamers to keep their old games/consoles, stop buying remakes/remasters of retro triple AAA games (including the Nintendo ones) and instead, start buying indie games and AA games.
People are always going to buy remasters or remakes especially when the original games have skyrocketed in value (particularly Nintendo games) because not everyone is willing or able to emulate. Also, not everyone is going to want to go out of their way to buy an old system to play originals if they can even afford them.
This happened to me when I bought my first ever console. nintendo 3ds. I didnt know about the cartridge thing. They sold me a cartridge with Pokemon X ad Y loaded. I thought it was a legal thing to do. I paid full price for both the games. 1 week later I got banned coz of going online with a duplicate id. lesson learned. better buy from amazon than in a shop.
just buy your switch games at big retailers like Walmart or target etc by walking in and looking exactly at what your buying. Amazon can be sketchy at times. Nintendo should be able to detect the diff between an OG 'cart' and ROM running off a unnofficial 'cart'. They probably already bought a number of MiGs for that very reason.
I have a used copy of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and I have yet to play it to record it for RUclips because of fearing the one time I try I get banned. If we do end up recording that I will likely disable the internet on my console hoping nothing shady goes down. It's likely fine but the fact I'm thinking about playing that game with the internet off hoping it never pings anything is crazy. We got it from GameStop as it was cheaper and I was never really anti used games. But the fact the Switch can be ruined by people dumping and making copies is so dumb. I don't want to be banned for getting a used game.
Weird idea: maybe Gamestop will have to ask the seller if they have dumped the game using a MiG switch or any other dumper device, and if the seller says no, they'll take in the game and put it on shelves. If someone buys that game and gets banned, they can reach out to GameStop and idk, maybe contact the seller, or ban the seller, or contact Nintendo or do something to try to resolve the situation. It's going to be very tricky, especially when the Switch 2 comes around, that's for sure...
No, not really. Just like the 3DS and WiiU, the switch will eventually be hackable without hardware modifications. At that point, you can play dumped games offline without any consequences. Potentially, there could be some spoofing software to prevent these account bans and play online with a dumped copy of the game.
The smartest move for Nintendo would be to wait and see how much of a problem this actually becomes before taking any action. If there aren't many games that end up double logged in and their next console isn't too far away, it's probably best to do nothing.
It wouldn't surprise me if the pirates come up with something to replace the original ID with random IDs each time they copy them. That way the pirate can still use their original copy, and it makes it harder to trace it back to the pirate. But it still runs the potential to screw an innocent person, because someone else might have a copy that happens to have the same ID.
if the switch 2 is digital i am not going too buy it for get it i almost got hacked and locked out of my xbox account cause people try too long into it i got my account locked for 1 month .ever since then i stop using xbox series x and i only playing games that i want .
Game stores need to reject any Switch game that's already been dumped to be used on a Mig Switch flashcart. There needs to be a corporate policy where they have to ask if they've dumped the Switch game for use with a MIG Switch, and if so (or if they refuse to answer), then the return is automatically rejected. They should also have a sign up that tells buyers if they get banned for playing a used Switch game online, that they contact the store, and whoever returned the copy under false pretenses gets banned from that game store for life.
At least you people in America still have stores that buy and sell used games. I live in Norway and we had GameStop here but the last one closed down about 5 years ago. There are no more stores here that buy and sell used games. There are other stores that sell video games and consoles but only new. So if the only way we can get used games here now is if we go online and find someone selling used on eBay or Amazon or wherever.
Good to know about the used Switch game market. I’ll try to be on the lookout for it, but I can rest easy because I only buy brand-new Switch games either way.
Here's the issue with this. Many of these physical Switch games had a very limited amount of printing. Until now never would it ever occur to me that I could potentially be punished just for buying a legitimate preowned video game from a reliable reputable store/source.
If by 'taking it back' you mean the game back to the retailer for refund after they've dumped it, then I'm not sure there is a problem. I don't know a retailer that takes video games back for refund, particularly if they've been opened. If unopened, they've exchanged or refunded, but that's it, and usually within a 10 or 15 day time limit from the time of purchase WITH a receipt. Target once offered an exchange only on a duplicate game my son received as a gift (no receipt), but for a fee, even though they could confirm within their system that the game was purchased legitimately AND that it was within 7 days of doin so. So even on exchange they were only willing to return 75% of the games purchase value. (We no longer do business with Target, lol). Having said all that, a person bent on committing a crime usually finds a way and an accomplice if they need one. It would only take one corrupt retail worker to make the return for the scenario to mentioned to play out. It's quite possible this new dumper will cause problems for Nintendo and consumers in the future. Thanks for reporting,. Hope you have a great week.
I'm just now very concerned about the unintended consequences and what is going to happen to legitimate owners as a result of this situation. Never have I ever recalled a situation like this happening while in the middle/near the end of a game system's life cycle.
I have a Switch with 0 games because I can't afford them. I had to move about a year ago and got it in trade for my DVDs/BLU Rays. The used games are the same price as new. Even if this makes the price go down, I still won't be able to use it because all games require their respective day 1 patches. Assuming I one day can afford a used game, the second I try to do so Nintendo tells me "no". I am done with Nintendo.
Some games are playable even without patches offline though expect a few glitches like the old days. It's just knowing which ones. I have played games straight out of the box at times without updating. I just don't connect to the internet thus doesn't trigger the you need to update message if the game doesn't actually require it. Sorry to hear you have no games though. When the switch 2 comes out keep a close eye for bargain sales on switch games over the years following. I remember getting some really cheap 3ds games a few years after switch release. Yo-kai watch brand new for $5 was amazing and a few nintendo games got cheap also though more in the $20 range. As for the hacker situation. Try not to worry too much. I have a feeling this won't be as big a issue as people say. If the hacker wants to make a copy and sell physical and plans to go online with it then they are screwing themselves over because they'll also be banned. Chances are their copy will likely never see Nintendo's online. Yes there's a risk with a stupid hacker but having the physical copy and receipt should hopefully be enough proof.
It's just if you're connected to Nintendo's servers and are on the game. Even if you're not connected, the switch will log what you did, and at what time, so no matter whay, once you connect to the Internet, that will be sent to nintendo. Nintendo likes to send bans out in waves, so you may have a limited time, but if you were onine at the same time, you're screwed.
what happens if i sold my old game and then bought a new one and that person i sold the game to uses a mig switch to dumb his game and goes online at the same time i am ???
Here's how Nintendo COULD handle it... Multiple users online with same certificate = certificate banned Someone complains that used cartridge purchased stopped working, Nintendo has customer physically mail cartridge to Nintendo. Nintendo verifies cartridge is not a counterfeit replica and that certificate matches banned certificate. Nintendo either mails a replacement cartridge or issues a coupon for that game for free and reimburses the retailer or offers a digital copy of the game.
I’ve loved Nintendo products for years, but their stance to combat piracy lately has really started to rub me the wrong way to the point I’m considering entirely skipping their next console generation. As a loyal customer I’ve spent thousands purchasing their games from retailers at full MSRP and now have to worry about them banning my account should I be an unfortunate victim of piracy when buying used games? Absolutely ridiculous and such an anti consumer move. The success of the switch has furthered their greed to a disgusting level they think they are unstoppable. This will eventually backfire like it did during the Wii U / 3DS era where they get humbled and have to slowly earn the loyalty of their customers back. Seems like a vicious cycle we see each console generation where one of the big three companies surpasses the leading competitor because they get too comfortable and focused on fiscal earnings rather than providing products the consumers want and are willing to pay for.
I hacked my switch so I don’t have to pay for offline games. Now that I’m saving all that money on games, I can afford to buy online multiplayer games for $60 new.
Class action lawsuit against Nintendo. If you have your original receipt and a copy of the credit card statement that shows proof you bought the game, Nintendo should not ban you. Doesn't matter what they think. This should go to court and I would love it if Nintendo lost in a big way.
This is terrible news to me. I buy used games. There has to be a way to validate if i own and have the physical games before banning and never ban the console.
I love Nintendo and have since childhood, Zelda is my favorite Franchise, but if they go all Digital I will not buy the next or any future consoles that do Digital only. I just won't play Zelda anymore, and as much as that sucks I can live with it.
The unque ID transfers to nintendo evennif you dont connect to the internet, so yes, all games will get you banned. There is nondebate over this. Anyone who says it wont get you banned is ignorant of the facts.
What if Nintendo had a system where physical games were registered to your console the first time they were played? From then on, that cartridge would only work on your Switch unless you deregistered it. That would discourage piracy, theft and sharing games within a household. There could even be a limit to how many times a game can change ownership before it becomes useless, so you can still sell it second hand but won't be able to lend it to friends or play it on different Switches in a house.
Nintendo needs to 100% remove file transfers from usb C completely. allow for charging but not info transfer.... remove sd card slots and make the new future console digital only. all file transfers be done with service online. and no more physical copies.... people really know how to ruin something good because they lazy.
If Nintendo bans people, then the people dumping the games could also be banned, which might hinder those who would want to dump games and sell them…the perpetrator also couldn’t play the games online potentially.
My go to technique for a long time now is to never buy a sec-hand game from someone who looks like they're knowledgeable with computers or from collectors. If it's not sold by some random parent who doesn't even know the game they're selling, i ain't buying it. 😂 When it comes to switch games, it's a lot better to buy from an ignorant seller tha risking buying a banned cart.

Man, I feel really sorry for anyone that may have bought a used Splatoon 2/3 and have this happen to them
I don't think this is a huge issue right now but i am worried that in the future with the next gen nintendo console coming out, a lot of people will do this because they won't want to buy a new console. I am also worried a lot that nintendo will still stick with the portable consoles. I want a powerful console like a ps5 for nintendo games.
i hope they are gonna make a proper new home console
@@elliekittymeow I do too. The switch was amazing but they need something new or they’re going to flop
@@mr_kirk42their next gen console will be the very same technology and on par with the ps4 but not the pro
Would you be okay if it is portable 1080P, but does use DLSS upscaling to 4k when docked? IE PS4 quality graphics? I am at the point where I don't care if we have 4k if the games look decent and are fun. Nintendo IPs are more fun than any games on ps5 or xbox
They have already said that they are sticking with the switch style console design.
Unfortunately, people will take advantage of a situation such as this to make a quick buck, despite screwing someone over.
Well I wasn't about to play semantics with the legal definition of "piracy" so that's why I said basically. 😅
I mean, if you copy your OWN game, then you sell the hard copy and keep the digital one, is that technically an act of piracy, or does it become some other type of crime? I dunno, probably not! Haha but that's where my head was at when I recorded this.
Thanks for watching
I buy most of my games new from Amazon not always day one but sealed I don’t like how game stop opens the games and stores them separately from the case also if you buy a used game from them there is a risk of receiving one of those crappy after market game stop cases if they don’t have the display one it came with.
@@germainetaylor1757I’ve always bought new from GameStop and not had my games still sealed in plastic.
I wonder how real the games look and if companies like GameStop will even be able to tell the difference 😬
Well, they'll be returning the original games to the game stores since the copies are digital so... very real.
Here in Australia it's hard to tell whether they're used or not because they are sold unsealed.
Not to mention if you return in 1 week you get a full refund and they still sell it for full price
Why are they sold unsealed? Is it because of some law?
@@DioBrando-qr6ye
Good question. I asked a few retailers and they said they're doing it for the environment.
@@lillia_venitaes3351 Actually they don't always give you a refund. It depends on the employee.
I remember there was a stretch when certain games like EA games and such mandated a one-time-use on line code to enable online play. They eventually dropped that.
In the UK used games are not cheap for the switch. For the small saving, usually 10% or less, buying is the better option.
it's actually cheaper to buy new at argos
Really enjoying these video essays, Dan!
At this point, I'm going to start hating on the pirates. They take video game piracy too far, they are very persuasive, and now those of us who don't want to pirate games will now suffer because of them.
I think they won’t be as common because it would be a hassle to make the counterfeits. This already happened to gba and it’s not very common.
I've been spammed with so many tutorials about how to do this when I'm not interested in it at all, its super annoying.
I agree with you, More Crossing Minute.
It's horrifying that Nintendo is banning used games for using MIG!🥶
God, I hope Nintendo doesn't reject physical games in the future, and I hope that the next-gen Nintendo console isn't the last physical system.
Tbf we don't know how they'll respond or what will happen. But yeah not great times
I’ve bought brand “new” ps2 games only to find out years later they were resealed because they weren’t in official ps2 cases. i also got sent fake n64 cartridge games
@@JaneTheDoe-id2vx yes at that time I was studying in Thailand and I went to their biggest tech mall which had gaming stores. my 3ds was authentic but they sold me the games in Sky 3ds.
My local library has switch games that they lend out for 14-28 days. I wonder if this will cause problems with Nintendo down the road users wont be online at the same time . however when will Nintendo be bother by the same game id being on a different switch every month.
Nintendo should be able to detect the diff between an OG 'cart' and ROM running off a unnofficial 'cart'. They probably already bought a number of MiGs for that very reason.
Must say, the idea isn't fun. I do buy usedgames, mostly in store. Well we shall see, that is all I can say
I’ve only bought one used Switch game, and it was long before they started doing all this.
Soooo, sealed switch games are going to be worth more in the future.🤔
No, not really. Just like the 3DS and WiiU, the switch will eventually be hackable without hardware modifications. At that point, you can play dumped games offline without any consequences. Potentially, there could be some spoofing software to prevent these account bans and play online with a dumped copy of the game.
This is why I am looking at buying used asap as I am terrified of this. I do not want to overpay on new Switch games and used mitigates this.
Yikes sorry to hear that!! 😕
I had someone hack into my RuneScape account and they ran a bot on it and it got banned. Was pissed I lost all my progress on the account.
Probably works the same way as a digital game shared across multiple switches. Stopping you if the primary account is already online. For now.
I bet if it has updates or additional dlc or content will be restricted
God this makes it harder to buy used switch games....
Thanks so much for the info!
Great video! very informative🤝🎉
it's very unlikely that you'll be ban since you both have to be connected to the internet and playing the game with the same ID at the same time
This is really scary. I bought tears of the kingdom from marketplace on the 8th of this month. Am I at risk of getting banned?
Until now never would it ever occur to me that I could potentially be punished just for buying a legitimate preowned video game
from a reliable reputable store/source.
Thank you for this!
I have many Nintendo games new, but should I load them right away, or is it okay to just unwrap it later? I'm tech stupid.
Any update on this? I am very curious whether it applies to games that don't explicitly connect online.
what happens if i sold my old game and then bought a new one and that person i sold the game to uses a mig switch to dumb his game and goes online at the same time i am ???
Here's how Nintendo COULD handle it...
Multiple users online with same certificate = certificate banned
Someone complains that used cartridge purchased stopped working, Nintendo has customer physically mail cartridge to Nintendo.
Seems like a vicious cycle we see each console generation where one of the big three companies surpasses the leading competitor because they get too comfortable and focused on fiscal earnings rather than providing products the consumers want and are willing to pay for.
just don't go online with the game in your system if you have any concern, and make a second account for online play only.
I hacked my switch so I don’t have to pay for offline games. Now that I’m saving all that money on games, I can afford to buy online multiplayer games for $60 new.
Nintendo moto
"Lets punish the broke unfortunate kids who bought a game second hand"
They really should just ban the account, not the cart itself
I'm actually surprised Nintendo hasn't been doing this for a while now.
Great we're getting duped switch games and it's hard to get cleans now amazing
Class action lawsuit against Nintendo. If you have your original receipt and a copy of the credit card statement that shows proof you bought the game, Nintendo should not ban you. Doesn't matter what they think. This should go to court and I would love it if Nintendo lost in a big way.
So GameStop will be out of business?
Their solution is probably no backwards compatibility.
Oh damn, those devices will end up ruining the used market 😢
This is terrible news to me.
I buy used games. There has to be a way to validate if i own and have the physical games before banning and never ban the console.
Nintendo will most likely go with the ban everyone route
I love Nintendo and have since childhood, Zelda is my favorite Franchise, but if they go all Digital I will not buy the next or any future consoles that do Digital only. I just won't play Zelda anymore, and as much as that sucks I can live with it.
What’s the name of the game in the video (blond boy or man chopping down a tree, looks to be on an island)? Thanks!:)
Animal crossings
Offline content will always be great when in good condition.
We’ve never owned video games in the way we thought we did. Buying physical is useless
I modchipped my Switch for this reason. I'm not risking these problems. It's kinda bs
I never play online so used games are fine with me.
The unque ID transfers to nintendo evennif you dont connect to the internet, so yes, all games will get you banned. There is nondebate over this. Anyone who says it wont get you banned is ignorant of the facts.
See, I don't care about playing switch games online. I invite my friends to play games with me in person.
You are fear mongering tho, until nintendo “bans” someone for using a used copy there is no need for this video
Nintendo needs to 100% remove file transfers from usb C completely. allow for charging but not info transfer.... remove sd card slots and make the new future console digital only. all file transfers be done with service online. and no more physical copies.... people really know how to ruin something good because they lazy.
I’d never buy a used switch game. I’d rather buy the new copy and pay the extra ❤️
The 3ds thing is true they never had the id's
good thing i buy my games new and sealed. lots of people lick their cartridges and i don’t want nasty games
When it comes to switch games, it's a lot better to buy from an ignorant seller tha risking buying a banned cart.
This is a reason why I hate the MIG Switch.
You know that people emulate games for switch and go online without problems?
Buy used modded switch. Here, fixed for you
I don't think that would help.
