Older and more mature gymnasts are more likely to have opinions, know their boundaries, recognize toxic environments, etc. USAG back in the day needed young gymnasts because they needed people who wouldn't ask questions or stand up for themselves. They needed younger people who would be scared to ask questions or push back and made sure that anyone who did push back never got a chance.

Yep - can you IMAGINE the response of USAG 10 years ago if a gymnast.used the 'f' word in a social media platform 😂.

@@anovemberstarI’m not agreeing or disagreeing, but ANYONE that is a public figure and is the idol to many hopeful children might want to rethink their choice of words, so to not set a bad example for them. If she wasn’t someone who people looked up to, well the fuck ‘em.
Unfortunately, that’s not the role she is in. She’s the GOAT!

Yeah I thought it was interesting that Nassar knew better than to mess with certain girls. I think it's no coincidence the outspoken ones (outspoken at the time, not later) were the ones who say they weren't touched.

They needed the younger gymnasts who had little experience on the international stage bc they believed that this is what they had to do to get the medals. All the abuse and toxic environment they had to endure, I’m sure they thought that they had to go through all that to get the medals and to succeed. And the ones that might’ve recognized that something was wrong, many of them probably kept quiet because they wanted to succeed so badly. Maggie Nichols was one of the first to speak out in 2015, but she got shut down. Her speaking out probably contributed to her not making the Olympic team in 2016. If you go back and watch the competitions and Olympic trials leading up to the 2016 Olympics, she overall had great performances and showed good consistency, but she didn’t even get an alternate position. At the time, it really didn’t make much sense that she didn’t get at least an alternate position because she was a top contender and did well. So I think the example of Maggie speaking out and getting these things ripped away from her because of it showed why people were afraid to speak out because they didn’t want the same thing to happen to them. On top of that, winning medals was drilled into the athletes as the most important thing over anything else including their mental and physical health. Overall, the system was extremely toxic and it really did not allow for older and more mature athletes to come back because many became burned out, so physically injured, or they just didn’t want to go back to the toxic environment now that they got out and see how draining it was. But now, there are so many older athletes competing that are well into their 20s which I find amazing. Like Shawn said, it just shows how much the culture has changed for the better and it’s allowing for more athletes to enjoy their sport for longer.

Shawn, LONG story short, going to Olympic Trials in 2008 saved my life. I had to go to a new eye doc to get new contacts in time for that trip to Philadelphia and he spotted something that literally over 2 dozen other doctors missed. Days prior to leaving for Trials I was diagnosed with a disease that I've since had 10 brain surgeries for and I live with brain tumor symptoms every moment of my life. I was 21 and that week of Trials I was awaiting confirmation of a life-altering diagnosis with no cure. Trials gave me a distraction and you were a big part of that. Your smile was contagious. Thank you! (PS - Andrew, my hometown team is Washington, family held season tickets for decades, and I am thrilled we were the team you got to play for! HTTR!)

4:06 didn’t Alicia compete till she was 24? Aly Raisman till she was 22? This was all before Marta retired where these ideas would be blatant. Also I think Shannon miller was 23, Dominique Dawes was 23, Annia Hatch 26, Mohini Bhardwaj 25.
I do know that they tend to lean more in favor on the younger side but they didn’t shy away when older girls showed promise. Also “overweight” gymnasts never existed. You cannot be an elite gymnast and be obese. Those ideas were created by insane unrealistic ideas of body standards. Long story short is if your doctor doesn’t determine you overweight then you aren’t . Coaches and others in charge are delusional and spread sickness this way.

I know you think people are just injecting themselves in Simone’s marriage but what was out out on social media about her husband and words that came out of his mouth is why I believe people think he isn’t good enough for her. I think people don’t mean her harm, they simply think she doesn’t deserve him and deserves better. Is it their business, no of course not. But he made it everyone business with the way he responded to a question about his marriage to her. She is without a doubt one of the GOATS of gymnastics and people feel a sense of wanting to protect her because they love her.

I have to say I agree with Andrew on this one.
While Simone probably has every right to feel frustrated about the unnecessary comments about her husband - she is in the public eye and it is expected that people are going to make comments about her and her life. That is just the way people are. I don't agree with it, but this is just part of life. People make comments about other people's lives like this that are not celebrities. We all need to figure out how to cope.
That being said, I am all for her feeling like she wants or needs to defend herself. While one of us might have to defend ourselves to just a few people in our lives, Simone is having to defend herself to millions of people who are making these comments. She can defend herself, and should. But as someone who is a public figure, the cussing and otherwise really foul language and tone of her message was off-putting. I can imagine it was off-putting to fans of hers that do agree people have been wrong to say those things, but didn't like her comment. I fall into that category. Being the best gymnast of all time doesn't really give her permission to be an asshole. And to be fair, this isn't just Simone that does stuff like this, many public figures do this as well, and I personally am not a fan of it. Others might not be bothered by it, and that is okay too.
I get she should should always have the option to say whatever she wants, and I agree with that, but there is always that balancing act with how you can do that when you are a public figure. It doesn't mean she should walk on egg shells as to not offend anyone either. That isn't what I was referring to. But she could have used better messaging to stand up for her husband and her marriage and then moved on.

At the end of the day, she can’t please everyone at the same time, why not just do what you want at the moment. Wait - didnt Dominique Dawes do 3 - 1992, 1996, 2000, and Mohini Bhardwaj was almost 26 in 2004 Olympics? I dont think USA gymnastics had a thing going on about older gymnasts, or returning gymnasts.
I do think that younger gymnasts were easier to frighten into the sort of behaviour that some in USA gymnastics wanted during a window in time that both Dominique and Mohini could resist because they had coaches who wanted the best for them, and the maturity to not crumble.
We have seen coaches who will do anything to manipulate their students to benefit themselves, and a system that turned a blind eye to it.
We have seen mature and returning gymnasts who have changed the system, and praise be for that. I have total admiration for the women and girls who have taken back control of a bullying, coercive and abusive system, but they have paid a huge and terrible price.

Andrew adores Shawn and everything he does and says online supports that. The gymnastic community is used to that kind of treatment by a spouse for our beloved athletes! Comments were made that sounded less than that, and people took offense because they only want Simone to be adored by her husband as Andrew adores Shawn. That being said, I agree that what we see online is a snapshot and not the whole picture. It is their marriage and people should not continue to interfere in such a disrespectful way. Obviously it’s hurting Simone, and if they really care about her they should stop.

In the woods, in creeks, swinging on grapevines, making mud pies, making a treehouse, playing with friends, playing with toys, playing games like Tag, Swing the Statue, Red Light Green Light, Mother May I, catching lightning bugs, watching a jar of frog eggs turn into tadpoles...😆 We were on our own...getting called in when it got dark, with chiggers and mosquito bites. Absolutely happy and tired. Occasional trips to parks and picnics. Not criticizing... It's just different. We weren't entertained ...we entertained ourselves. I guess we were a little older than your kids for that but when younger we just played a little more indoors under supervision. The activities do sound great though. Probably the difference in small town vs. big city advantages.

Thank you so much for giving your thoughts from your perspective on current day gymnastics! I would love to hear you talk more about the gymnasts, for me it helps put things in perspective… I have always loved gymnastics and love to see the gymnasts competing at older ages… It blows my mind that Simone Biles is 27 because when I was 10 and falling in love with Kim Zmeskal I remember I was so sad because I already thought I was too old to start… so to see these women staying in the sport and reaching levels in the sport that have never been reached is just so inspiring to me!! I always want to know if the level of skill that Simone Biles has achieved is seen by other Olympic gymnasts as something that makes her truly one of a kind , the first of her kind, or a combination of the two… the way it is presented and the way she competes just has me in awe it is exciting as a spectator to watch! Is it her ability to perform her skills both at the highest level and when it counts the most the combination of skills that make her so unbelievable and in a league of her own? How do you view it? I have so many questions so please keep talking about gymnastics… it’s an insiders view that is such a gift! Thanks for all that you share with your audience of your life ! Love you guys!

My mom turned grocery shopping into an activity for my brother and me when we were young. Could she have rushed through the store? Sure. By involving us, we did not whine. It was like a treasure hunt to find the ingredients for meals.
We watched for child-friendly events at every local museum, the library, and event venue near us. The kids saw farming, participated in various science events, and when the fire stations did tours of the trucks, we went. Free band and orchestra concerts.
We would find out where youth baseball and softball were playing and bring a picnic. We knew none of the players and cheered for everyone who hit the ball or scored. Colleges had free student recitals we attended and we appropriately applauded.
Most events were free or very low cost. My budget was small so I scouted around for activities. My kids were born in 87 and 89 so the internet was not as robust as it is now.

Love you Shawn. Been watching gymnastics since 1996 ~ almost religiously because i love it so much. I remember watching you and others as a junior and then as a senior and aside from of course your fantastic gymnastics, you were then as you are now humble. You stood out for this to me. You had this aura about you that was just pure and humble and watching this video and following you on IG, you still are this humble pure person that shines. Your comments about Gabby and Simone are so classy too. Thanks for being such a great role model. Hugs from Korea 😊

Your channel came to me because of gymnastics. If y’all talk about different things, I don’t know. At first, I didn’t recognize you and was wondering how do you know so much about gymnastics. It would be great if yall somehow used your names as identifiers. I was happy to figure out who you were. I loved that commercial with your mom and you’re walking on your hands by the kitchen. That was so funny!
On the serious side, you have to give people time to shake their heads and get used to the idea that a still competitive gymnast is married.
We knew that when you are 20, it’s about age out time. puberty is postponed in a gymnast’s body (men and women’s,) so when you retire, that is when you date and get married. That’s very old school thinking and older people are still adjusting to that.
A couple of other things that we ask patience for is letting us old school gymnasts get used to the fact that girls go to college on scholarship AND still are able to compete in the amateur sports. That won’t take too long to get used to, but you have to agree, we are in the infancy of that stage of competition.
Other things that college gymnasts bring to the table that I’m not a fan of is their style changes.
First, they are just wrapping up their hair on top of their heads like they just go out of bed, didn’t shower, are wearing their fuzzy house slippers and robe to go get the mail. EEK! When they do that, it seems like they have no self respect or respect for the judges or their fan base. I saw Simone’s hair like that and thought, oh, that’s not a good look. (I hated it on Nastia, too.) Then she was at a different meet with a simple ponytail and I respected her so much more! First impressions are so important.
Next, they are bringing their college style of music with them to the amateur competitions. As a music educator and dance instructor (and former gymnast,) there is no musicality to what they bring to us. There is no depth in the musical selection, so there is no depth to the choreography, hence lower artistic impression scores.
I believe the only one I see that I can’t wait to see her floor routine again is Shailese Jones. She will proudly represent the U.S. at the Olympic Games and I can’t wait to see how her floor routine grows. (I’ve always believed that Shannon M’s floor routine was far superior to Kim Z’s.)
Pretty much anyone else… meh. 🫤
I am allowed to have my opinions just as much as competing gymnasts have the rights to choose whichever style of music they want, and I will support them. I wish they would postpone the college routines to the college of their choice and they will get their easy 10. (I see that quite a bit in college gymnastics. Too many 10’s. So many that they really don’t hold the same weight as they used to.)
As for Gabby, I’ve seen footage of her practicing her new release sequence on the high bar and she nailed it each time!! I couldn’t wait to see her do it in competition, and then core happened. I was still so proud of her. I know she has it. I’ve seen it. But I don’t understand why she scratched the other events. (?)
She is such a HISTORICAL figure and I admire everything she does. She has the talent to win medals at the Olympics. I pray she brings her confidence and strength with her and not let core hold her back. She’s gonna make the Olympics! I love her and my eyes will be glued to the tv set wearing a Gabby shirt!!
(😢By the way… I don’t even know who Simone is married to. I heard y’all say some athlete. I hope she is as happy as she can be in her life!)
Simone has the complete package to get gold AA this year, but she needs to keep her head in at all times so that she can stick her landings. I’m a little worried that she has learned bad habits by blowing off her bad landings, like she did at core.
When Flo-Jo was sprinting, she didn’t stop running when she hit the tape. She knew she had to go THROUGH the tape and finish at the end of the track. I admired her mental mindset when it came to competitions. I’m not seeing Simone run through the tape.
Thanks for letting me share some old timer’s thoughts!
I wish you were still competing!

Chow's approach regarding the whole "it's a competition against yourself" thing has an interesting effect. It means that you aren't LIMITED by your competition. In other words, if you know someone's got a 12 and you need a 12.1 to beat them, you're aiming for 12.1. But you may be capable of higher. Yet knowing what you have to make to beat them means you're pushing for juuuuuuust beyond them. When it's against yourself, you're pushing as far as you possibly can. You're not held back by the bar SOMEONE ELSE has set.

However, Shawn sometimes acts like she lives in this bubble where nothing bad is supposed to happen . I think Andrew hit the nail on the head when he was talking about Simone and how by talking about it on the podcast they were feeding into it. Within figure skating, you saw the shift away from 14 and 15-year-olds (due to rules changes), which hopefully is encouraging some changes in attitudes toward training. I'm very hopeful that gymnastics will make some changes in training paradigms that allow athletes to peak later when they have more mental maturity. Now if we can just get ballet on board...

People are just not expecting her to make the team this late in the game, and her pulling out after one rotation doesn't give the appearance of loving the sport or fighting her way to the top. It makes me think of how she was in the stands at the 2016 games with a scowl on her face and a lack of sportsmanship towards her teammates. It's hard to cheer for her when she walks out like that.

If this happened during the time of the Karolyi’s she could have had injuries from being forced to compete and the team would most likely not make the podium too. It was a damn if you do damn if you don’t with the coach potato chip eats as she calls it. There are people still talking nonsense about the situation. The gymnasts are humans not robots. As for her having to deal with that pressure I can't think of anyone but you Shawn that could relate what it feels like to have so much pressure on your shoulders than you. Sadly you had so much weight put on you from just the higher ups and the people of Iowa to do better, be better bring home all gold. At the time to me it felt like it was almost threatening if you didn't bring home nothing but gold which was sad. And then for the main one that was pushing it 24/7 never to of apologize for it or at least no publicly and dropped you like you never existed.
I will be cheering team USA from my chair and I'll smile, laugh, yell and cry with all of them. But more than anything I'll be happy they gave their all, everything they had and left it there on the floor no matter what they did or didn't bring back to their homes. Blessings!

Andrew, Simone making a statement to the haters in that way isn’t the same as feeding into the comments because I think many of the haters saying negative things about her husband are doing it (they think) in defense of her. I believe she wrote that to tell her followers to stop “defending” me by putting down my husband because it’s actually hurting me too. She probably hopes by explaining it like that that people who actually do want to support her will stop making mean comments about him/their marriage. I think most of the people who’ve made comments such as saying he isn’t good enough for her are doing so because they think she’s amazing and deserves someone who thinks she’s the greatest catch (and from the interview he did it seems he might not think this way). No, people should not be tearing their relationship apart especially because no one actually knows them as a couple on a personal level, but I think most of the mean-spirited comments about him were from people trying to stand up for her.

Shawn, both you and Simone are showing your naïveté about the human condition. People who don’t have a good sense of self, will always find ways to try and tear people down on social media, and in life. Simone should have never responded by telling trolls on the internet to “eff off.” She lowered herself to their level. Shawn’s husband advice of not responding to trolls on Social, are so appropriate. One never gives negative comments any chance of blowing up. Simply ignore the trolls. They will simply have no life.

People were only concerned for Biles because he did an interview that was TOTALLY disrespectful to her and had a lot of red flags in it. I think people just care but dont realize that though he may have some red flags that outside people see, its up to her. If he has issues then they can work them out. That is what is not anyone's business but I do think people were just concerned because that interview and few other things were extremely rude to her and self absorbed. I agree with Andrew on her response. She has really came to light as the b word of gymnastics because of things she has said. Though she has EVERY right to say something she is a role model and she is in the public eye so honestly she should just delete them and move along and do her. I was a gymnast in the 90s it and was TOTALLY different. I wish it was then like now so the girls today have so much more then before and its great! So that is the best thing for me is to see the older girls being the leaders. Not just in the US but also we see it now in all countries including China which is wild. So good things are happening.
