Although if you’re a nitpicker, you might be bothered by Apple’s marketing about size, the reality is that most potential buyers are likely coming from a three-year-old or older watch. Very few people upgrade their watches yearly these days. So comparing the new watch to the prospective buyer’s current watch is much more sensible.
The problem with an 18-hour battery life is if you use the watch a lot AND want to use the sleep tracking feature then you have to charge the watch before and after sleep. I wish they'd just target 24 hours. For people having a light usage this could equal a 2 day battery life
A lot of people are underestimating the fast charging. 80% in 30m is game changer. (previously was 80% in 45m) It hits a sweet spot where charging while showering (and dressing) or watching a half-hour TV show is enough juice to get you thru a day. I feel like people who are disappointed by the "all new design" of Apple are not observing the mechanical watch world where most times the only different thing from one watch to the next in the same brand is either the digits in the dial (watch face) or a slightly different dial itself and it gets a different name and price. After all how many changes can you make on a watch. And some people want it to be round, I don't know why. There's been mechanical dress watches for decades that have been and still are rectangular and on those watches that shape doesn't really serve a purpose other that looking different, on a smart watch it actually serve a real purpose of better displaying information (information density) without having to keep reformatting to shorten sentences that are lower down or high up on the message screen. And if you know watches, you will not be fooled by a round smartwatch and think it's a traditional watch.
I bought new Ultra 2 last Saturday to enjoy better battery life. I’ve been traveling whole week but I was able to compare who long it lasts with always-on-display on and off. With it being on it lasted for 48hours and still had 10%. Yesterday I finished testing it with the always-on being off and it lasted for 72 hours and still had 7%. I thinks that’s really nice.
@Dave2D do you sleep with the Apple Ultra watch, and if you do, is it comfortable to have a watch that big on the wrist during the night? I am going to buy my first apple watch and I don’t know if I should go to S9, S10 or Ultra 2
@@pedroaraujomoreira both myself and my fiancé have been wearing the ultra to track our sleep for 2 years now and have no complaints about it. The ultra is our favorite version of the Apple Watch so far and gets amazing battery life. We typically go 3 days between charging.

The only noticeable differences, assuming you don’t go diving every day, is that the Ultra 2 has twice as large battery, an extra button, and is way larger and bulkier than the Series 10, despite having a slightly smaller screen than the Series 10. And of course the Ultra 2 is almost 2x the price of the Series 10. My series 10 does about 30-40 hours on a single charge, despite being rated for 18 hours, and it is fully charged by the time I get out of the shower and get dressed. You probably won’t even notice the bigger battery in daily use if you shower once a day.

Battery life is the reason I can never go back to the regular series Apple Watches. I charge my Ultra every 3rd day, get a good 2 nights out of it, and that’s with all the notifications on and workout tracking everyday.
24h should be the mark for battery life. I have a stand up meeting every morning. The watch could be charged during that time. All that sleep tracking stuff is useless if I have to charge my watch during the night.
Dave2D probably the best reviewer lately. Telling it like it is, without the snarky, cynical smugness that are making MKBHD and Mrwhosetheboss videos almost unwatchable (for me). Anyone else notice this, or just me?
Eh, i can kinda see where youre coming from. And im not sure if you can also notice but it also just seems like they arent diving much into the technology anymore, i mean i know technology, and specifically phones, tablets, smartwatches have stagnated, But man, it seems apparent that theyve also stagnated.
They’re making the right choice with the battery. As a fashion device (not just a techie thing), I actually want thinner. 18 is fine, especially if I can top it off quickly
Actually, with my apple series watch 9 I manage to use it for a day and half. I don't "play" with it a lot, just keep it on my wrist with minimum notifications and also battery optimization settings. I don't charge it "everyday" just every day and half. So extra 6 hours of battery would make me charge it every 2 days. That would be great for me!
10:03 The Apple Watch, the Pebble and Fossil before it, never did anything for me like that. I wish I could disable and or strip out the vast majority of functions out of these watches. 5 day battery, as in weekly charging, seeing the time, and being able to see the call, text, or email I just got without taking my phone out are the main benefits
I’m pretty sure that my next Apple Watch will be an Ultra 2. I have a series 5 and the battery is getting weak. The always on display got turned off a long time ago and it usually makes it through the day, but the battery life causes me to have to do near full charges everyday. With a watch with more battery life, the charge cycles would be closer to 40% to fully charged and would probably keep the battery condition better longer. 60-70% on the Ultra 2 would still last me through a day with time to spare.
I had the very Apple Watch Series 1 and it lasted me for 5 years before it broke. At that point, I didn't know there were many other non-Apple competitors that offer much better battery life for a substantially lower cost. I've been rocking an Amazfit Band 5 that was about $50 when I got it (they don't make this anymore), and it lasts me about a week in battery life. I will easily admit that it's not as fluid as the Apple Watch that syncs with the iPhone, but for basic reading texts, notifications, step tracking, sleep tracking, etc. As much as I like Apple technology the wearables has seemingly been lackluster at best.
Since you wear the ultra for two years can you explain how it’s comfortable because I’ve been wearing it and it’s really really uncomfortable. I’ve tried a lot of different positions different tightness, but it’s not working
The problem with 18-hour battery life is that when I charge before sleep it dies the next day evening if I don't come back home early enough, I don't have enough time in the morning to wait for it to be fully-charged
I don’t like wearing my watch when I sleep nor when I shower, so the battery is good for me. I either charge it during sleep or when I shower and that’s plenty enough to last me the day.
That 18hr argument is so nonsense. You get 18hrs maybe for only first 6 months and it starts to degrade. Might as well give 22-24hr so that 18hr is what you get after 1yr of use which will extend the life of this watch. They just don’t care about customers
That is true for every smartwatch, and you should take that as a given. Once you get into the habit, it is not an issue. Maybe I am from an older generation that doesn't think like youngsters and doesn't complain about things like this but adapts. It isn't life-destroying.
@@andyH_England Its really not. My Galaxy watch lasts 2-3 days easy. My sis got a oneplus watch that lasts a week. Neither of them are Ultra-sized. You shouldn't have to worry about charging multiple devices daily.
@@AbhishekKumar-vx9ub I have an Amazfit GTR 4 that is almost exactly 2 years old. I charged it 9 days ago, now it's at 6%. It will easily last me until the end of the day or even by tomorrow morning. I wouldn't give up this comfort for anything - I'll just throw it on the charger once a week whenever I get around to do it, and often times not even bothering to charge it to 100%. I can't believe Apple couldn't do at least half of this.
I pre-ordered the Ultra 2 in black, black AirPods max, and the black 16 Pro Max 1TB. The watch is really the only item, I didn't really need to. I'm keeping my Ultra 1 just for the blood oxy. My AirPods max is dead pretty much. It has problems every time I try to use them. Connecting and staying connected. I just put them in the basement and waiting for the new ones. The 16 Pro Max is upgrading over my 12 Pro Max so everything about it is better. I upgrade phones every 4 years.
The ability to play music through the watch speakers is not exclusive to the Series 10, the Ultra 2 can do this as well. I definitely prefer the natural titanium colour of the Ultra better too. For me the Ultra 2 in black cheapens the look of the watch and makes it look less premium. One of the things that drew me to the Ultra, was the double the battery life of the standard Apple Watches. Even after a few years of use and as the battery health starts to go down, the Ultra will still have great battery life, whereas the standard ones you will start to notice the battery life shorten more noticeable.
I dont own an apple watch but doesnt 18 hours meana you have to charge twice a day if you want sleep tracking? 24h would mean you can charge once a day.
I just really need someone to test the scratch resistant from the DLC apple added to protect from scratches . That will help to determine if I'm going to get one or not.

And im not sure if you can also notice but it also just seems like they arent diving much into the technology anymore, i mean i know technology, and specifically phones, tablets, smartwatches have stagnated, But man, it seems apparent that theyve also stagnated.
What strap are you using ? Love the design 😉
I think I’ll wait for the Ultra 3. Maybe next year?
Why did they take away blood oxygen readings though???
Only having like 2 watch faces for the always on 2nd hand was a shocker for me in person & a BIG reason for mot going with the 10
the feature to play music on the series 10 is also on the ultra 2
Thank you for such an honest review. I always wait for you to upload a review before thinking about actually buying a tech product.
where are the watch bands from ( the ones he's using for the ultra)?
Just wondering when will the iPhone review come out🥲
Hi Dave, where can I get those watch bands?
They’re making the right choice with the battery. As a fashion device (not just a techie thing), I actually want thinner. 18 is fine, especially if I can top it off quickly
What size are you demoing? 42mm or 46mm?
Actually, with my apple series watch 9 I manage to use it for a day and half. I don't "play" with it a lot, just keep it on my wrist with minimum notifications and also battery optimization settings. I don't charge it "everyday" just every day and half. So extra 6 hours of battery would make me charge it every 2 days. That would be great for me!
Coming from an SE Gen1 this was a nice upgrade for me 👍
What watch band is this in your Series 10?
It’s from Nomad
Hote many days Ultra watch goes on?
Wondering if the every second refresh shows a timer updated every second?
10:03
The Apple Watch, the Pebble and Fossil before it, never did anything for me like that. I wish I could disable and or strip out the vast majority of functions out of these watches. 5 day battery, as in weekly charging, seeing the time, and being able to see the call, text, or email I just got without taking my phone out are the main benefits
What bands are those?
Apple Watch with a replaceable battery would be lit. Imagine popping a new battery in after a long workout
Decided to upgrade. One reason being WatchOS 11 no longer supporting my series 4. The small improvements the past 6 years should add up nicely.
My Fitbit versa isn’t full of bells and whistles but it last almost a week on a single charge.
Does the jet black get scratched easily?
Since you wear the ultra for two years can you explain how it’s comfortable because I’ve been wearing it and it’s really really uncomfortable. I’ve tried a lot of different positions different tightness, but it’s not working
Just curious..other smartwatch brands have 1 week of battery so why cant apple make that..take the Huawei watch fit 3
Does the ultra 2 get the function to allow it to play music through its auxiliary speaker like the series 10 ?
My 4 years old galaxy watch 4 still lasts about a day 🤷♂️
@@AbhishekKumar-vx9ub I have an Amazfit GTR 4 that is almost exactly 2 years old.
Surely you never took highschool level physics. 😂😂😂😂😂 Its not physically possible for a battery to keep its same lifespan
I could see when people are away from home but is it really hard to take off your watch for 30 min and charge the watch.
Why don't you charge it at night?
The ability to play music through the watch speakers is not exclusive to the Series 10, the Ultra 2 can do this as well. I definitely prefer the natural titanium colour of the Ultra better too. For me the Ultra 2 in black cheapens the look of the watch and makes it look less premium. One of the things that drew me to the Ultra, was the double the battery life of the standard Apple Watches. Even after a few years of use and as the battery health starts to go down, the Ultra will still have great battery life, whereas the standard ones you will start to notice the battery life shorten more noticeable.
What’s the name of the green watch band?
Nomad
@@SergeantDaynescan’t find it anywhere on their website
@@rawkitlawnchair it is a Nomad sports band, but they probably don’t have that specific color anymore. Closest color I could find was coastal rock
@@SergeantDaynesthank you
If its about battery life, why u dont try Garmin or Huawey GT4, excellent battery life, around 2 weeks on single charge, excellent trackers
I have a Samsung gear s3 from 2016 that supports always on Display and you can play music from the watch’s speaker! What is apple doing ???
I have had a Apple Watch SE for almost 2 years now and have been looking to get a new one, so this video did help me quite a lot, thanks!
What are the bands on the beginning of the video?
where can I get that watch band? looks pretty sleek!!
What is the name of the band you’re running on your Series 10?
Ultra 2 can also playback audio
I dont own an apple watch but doesnt 18 hours meana you have to charge twice a day if you want sleep tracking? 24h would mean you can charge once a day.
Nice bands you got there. Can you provide any links?
I just really need someone to test the scratch resistant from the DLC apple added to protect from scratches . That will help to determine if I'm going to get one or not.
