The problem with an 18-hour battery life is if you use the watch a lot AND want to use the sleep tracking feature then you have to charge the watch before and after sleep. I wish they'd just target 24 hours. For people having a light usage this could equal a 2 day battery life
A lot of people are underestimating the fast charging. 80% in 30m is game changer. (previously was 80% in 45m) It hits a sweet spot where charging while showering (and dressing) or watching a half-hour TV show is enough juice to get you thru a day. If you only have 15m to charge (about the length of a youtube apple watch review) that’s enough for 8 hours.

Although if you’re a nitpicker, you might be bothered by Apple’s marketing about size, the reality is that most potential buyers are likely coming from a three-year-old or older watch. Very few people upgrade their watches yearly these days. So comparing the new watch to the prospective buyer’s current watch is much more sensible.

I feel like people who are disappointed by the "all new design" of Apple are not observing the mechanical watch world where most times the only different thing from one watch to the next in the same brand is either the digits in the dial (watch face) or a slightly different dial itself and it gets a different name and price. After all how many changes can you make on a watch. And some people want it to be round, I don't know why. There's been mechanical dress watches for decades that have been and still are rectangular and on those watches that shape doesn't really serve a purpose other that looking different, on a smart watch it actually serve a real purpose of better displaying information (information density) without having to keep reformatting to shorten sentences that are lower down or high up on the message screen. And if you know watches, you will not be fooled by a round smartwatch and think it's a traditional watch.
Battery life is the reason I can never go back to the regular series Apple Watches. I charge my Ultra every 3rd day, get a good 2 nights out of it, and that’s with all the notifications on and workout tracking everyday.

The only noticeable differences, assuming you don’t go diving every day, is that the Ultra 2 has twice as large battery, an extra button, and is way larger and bulkier than the Series 10, despite having a slightly smaller screen than the Series 10. And of course the Ultra 2 is almost 2x the price of the Series 10. My series 10 does about 30-40 hours on a single charge, despite being rated for 18 hours, and it is fully charged by the time I get out of the shower and get dressed. 24h should be the mark for battery life. I have a stand up meeting every morning. The watch could be charged during that time. All that sleep tracking stuff is useless if I have to charge my watch during the night.
Just picked up an Ultra 2. I love it, but after paying literally top dollar, I’m not thrilled that a cheaper model has extra features! I had assumed they’d updated it a bit in accordance with the 10.
I had the very Apple Watch Series 1 and it lasted me for 5 years before it broke. At that point, I didn't know there were many other non-Apple competitors that offer much better battery life for a substantially lower cost. I've been rocking an Amazfit Band 5 that was about $50 when I got it (they don't make this anymore), and it lasts me about a week in battery life. I will easily admit that it's not as fluid as the Apple Watch that syncs with the iPhone, but for basic reading texts, notifications, step tracking, sleep tracking, etc. As much as I like Apple technology the wearables has seemingly been lackluster at best.
I pre-ordered the Ultra 2 in black, black AirPods max, and the black 16 Pro Max 1TB. The watch is really the only item, I didn't really need to. I'm keeping my Ultra 1 just for the blood oxy. My AirPods max is dead pretty much. It has problems every time I try to use them. Connecting and staying connected. I just put them in the basement and waiting for the new ones. The 16 Pro Max is upgrading over my 12 Pro Max so everything about it is better. I upgrade phones every 4 years.
Actually, with my apple series watch 9 I manage to use it for a day and half. I don't "play" with it a lot, just keep it on my wrist with minimum notifications and also battery optimization settings. I don't charge it "everyday" just every day and half. So extra 6 hours of battery would make me charge it every 2 days. That would be great for me!
Since you wear the ultra for two years can you explain how it’s comfortable because I’ve been wearing it and it’s really really uncomfortable. I’ve tried a lot of different positions different tightness, but it’s not working
They’re making the right choice with the battery. As a fashion device (not just a techie thing), I actually want thinner. 18 is fine, especially if I can top it off quickly
The problem with 18-hour battery life is that when I charge before sleep it dies the next day evening if I don't come back home early enough, I don't have enough time in the morning to wait for it to be fully-charged
I don’t like wearing my watch when I sleep nor when I shower, so the battery is good for me. I either charge it during sleep or when I shower and that’s plenty enough to last me the day.
10:03 The Apple Watch, the Pebble and Fossil before it, never did anything for me like that. I wish I could disable and or strip out the vast majority of functions out of these watches. 5 day battery, as in weekly charging, seeing the time, and being able to see the call, text, or email I just got without taking my phone out are the main benefits
good job on debunking the bezel complaint. all it is is that youre getting less metal on the frame, but the screen to body ratio is still better. and screen to body ratio is the most objective measure of bezel.
No offense here, I love Apple Watch and been wearing it for the past long year as I can remember. One main issue about it regardless of how hi end it is, is its the battery life and having to charge it everyday. Now I have been rocking Garmin watch and haven’t look back since🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Excellent review. I agree with everything you said, and cancelled my S10 order. My S8 will be fine for a while longer. Looking at the Ultra 3 next year.
The reflection watch face, is so SEIKO Presage Cocktail time series. I was so going to buy Series 10, but with such incremental improvement that apple said 'All New Design', i am going straight to the watch shop, and buy Seiko Presage Cocktail Time instead.
My solution is to have 2 Apple Watches. One ultra and normal series 6. Ultra for the day and the normal for tracking sleep. Ultra set to left hand and normal set to right hand. It is uncomfortable to keep the watch on the same hand all day, so switching watches actually is more friendly to my skin. By setting up this way, you get the all good sides of Apple Watch and don’t need to worry about battery. 😅
Oled has always provided wide viewing angle for other applications like tv or phone. I wonder why it wasnt the case for AW and how it differs this time...
The ability to play music through the watch speakers is not exclusive to the Series 10, the Ultra 2 can do this as well. I definitely prefer the natural titanium colour of the Ultra better too. For me the Ultra 2 in black cheapens the look of the watch and makes it look less premium. One of the things that drew me to the Ultra, was the double the battery life of the standard Apple Watches. Even after a few years of use and as the battery health starts to go down, the Ultra will still have great battery life, whereas the standard ones you will start to notice the battery life shorten more noticeable.
Any idea about GPS technology inside AW10? Is it multi frequency one like one is AWU? Edit: Also I am beyond disappointed that original apple watch ultra ( Gen 1) is not getting any of the new features even though it's capable in terms of hardware requirements
Huge upgrade from a series 2 with a broken wheel. Battery life is about 8 hours better on my new 46mm Series 10, it does upwards of 40 hours on a single charge for me. I don’t think Apple Watches are devices you need to upgrade more than once every 5 or so generations, unless you break your current watch, or a really important feature gets released, like for example how the blood sugar sensor they’re working on could be important enough for diabetics to upgrade to the Series 11 even if they have the Series 10.
I don't use an iPhone, so the Watch doesn't really appeal to me, but I think companies are missing the point. A bigger battery might not be life changing rn, but as the batteries deteriorates, (most) people who hold on to their watches for a couple of years would benefit from a larger battery, like 3 years down the line. I'm on the Galaxy Watch 4, and I wish it had better battery to start off. Now I have to charge it twice a day, in the morning and at night.
The non-Ultra watch holds a charge for a day very comfortably, but it's almost impossible to get 2 days. I do know a lot of people who find the Watch too thick and keep asking for a thinner body.
@@zoltanzana I do, like most people. I'm just saying it's not worth for Apple trying to hit a 'comfortable 2 day battery' for any of their watches. It would make them much thicker, which is the opposite of what most people want as it's a prominent wearable. A 2 (or more) day battery would also require an irregular charging pattern, rather than a simple 'every night'.
Why does no one compare the jet black from this Apple Watch with the Jet Black iPhone 7… the 7 scratched so incredibly easily and I want to know if this Watch does the same thing.

Just wondering when will the iPhone review come out🥲
My Fitbit versa isn’t full of bells and whistles but it last almost a week on a single charge.
I don’t like wearing my watch when I sleep nor when I shower, so the battery is good for me.
I either charge it during sleep or when I shower and that’s plenty enough to last me the day.
Thank you for such an honest review. I always wait for you to upload a review before thinking about actually buying a tech product.
Great personal touch on being a social motivator for exercising!

The Apple Watch, the Pebble and Fossil before it, never did anything for me like that. I wish I could disable and or strip out the vast majority of functions out of these watches. 5 day battery, as in weekly charging, seeing the time, and being able to see the call, text, or email I just got without taking my phone out are the main benefits
Great honest review…and love the watch band!!! Where is that available?
My toddler is going to have field day with on-device music.
good job on debunking the bezel complaint. all it is is that youre getting less metal on the frame, but the screen to body ratio is still better. and screen to body ratio is the most objective measure of bezel.
What strap are you using ? Love the design 😉
if you want to sleep with the watch, then extending the battery to 24h is necessary so you don't charge it twice a day
Hey, Dave nice watch band! I have the same in gray for almost 3 years now and it's my favorite!
Hey dave, love your videos,
got any recommendations for accessories for the gen 10?
Wow that speaker is actually impressive. I'm so used to tinny messes on wearos
No offense here, I love Apple Watch and been wearing it for the past long year as I can remember. One main issue about it regardless of how hi end it is, is its the battery life and having to charge it everyday. Now I have been rocking Garmin watch and haven’t look back since🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
But does it do facetime audio/video??? 🍎 Please add this feature
Excellent review. I agree with everything you said, and cancelled my S10 order. My S8 will be fine for a while longer. Looking at the Ultra 3 next year.
Why did they take away blood oxygen readings though???
The reflection watch face, is so SEIKO Presage Cocktail time series. I was so going to buy Series 10, but with such incremental improvement that apple said 'All New Design', i am going straight to the watch shop, and buy Seiko Presage Cocktail Time instead.
World class tech channel Dave. You the are number one RUclipsr in the world in your category
Would be nice to see reviews of some eink devices. I'm particularly interested in eink phones.
Hi Dave, great review, could you please tell me the brand of the blu and yellow bands? Tx!!
Nice bands you got there. Can you provide any links?
Any idea about GPS technology inside AW10? Is it multi frequency one like one is AWU?
Edit: Also I am beyond disappointed that original apple watch ultra ( Gen 1) is not getting any of the new features even though it's capable in terms of hardware requirements
So the Pixel Watch 3 45 mm lasts longer, you should review that watch as well.
Hi Dave, where can I get those watch bands?
No mention of the chip differences? Seems like a big miss.
The non-Ultra watch holds a charge for a day very comfortably, but it's almost impossible to get 2 days. I do know a lot of people who find the Watch too thick and keep asking for a thinner body.
Why don't you charge it at night?
@@zoltanzana I do, like most people. I'm just saying it's not worth for Apple trying to hit a 'comfortable 2 day battery' for any of their watches. It would make them much thicker, which is the opposite of what most people want as it's a prominent wearable. A 2 (or more) day battery would also require an irregular charging pattern, rather than a simple 'every night'.
What size are you demoing? 42mm or 46mm?
How would you compare the size difference between the Ultra 2 and S10?
using a microscope.
Ultra 2 is too thick and ugly
Why does no one compare the jet black from this Apple Watch with the Jet Black iPhone 7… the 7 scratched so incredibly easily and I want to know if this Watch does the same thing.
Wondering if the every second refresh shows a timer updated every second?
Thank you for not making a big deal out of the "redesign"
Are those straps custom? Can't find them with the new watches...
I could see when people are away from home but is it really hard to take off your watch for 30 min and charge the watch.
Why don't you charge it at night?
Loved that “stupidest thing”. The most spontaneous and innocent statement from anybody I have seen here. Thanks for that.
Ultra 2 can also playback audio
I always on the Low Power Mode on my My S9, and I charged once on every 3 days!
where are the watch bands from ( the ones he's using for the ultra)?
