this video was SOOO helpful.. I had no idea why the screen kept being black in the studio.. and voila! just one button clicked (view on and off) and now I can see what I am shooting.. Thank goodness!!! and Thank you!!
Remapping the movie button to focus modes. It's genius. Thanks for that tip, it's a game changer for me too. Proof everyone has a little bit of knowledge that can really help others if they only knew.
The moment you said you set your "CL mode shooting speed" to only 2 shots I figured you must be a professional photographer. I agree with 95% your shooting philosophy. Thank you.
Thank you SO MUCH! I just got the z6ii and your video saved me! I set mine up exactly like yours and did my first session with it yesterday! It went perfectly and I learned my buttons pretty quickly 🙂
This was so detailed and helpful in setting up my brand new z62. I just upgraded from d750 and your step by step has helped me feel more confident and excited in using my new camera. THANK YOU!
Loved this Mike. Thank you so much for posting it. I'm currently renting the z6ii and the z8 to test them both, upgrading from a d610. This video was so incredibly helpful to me. Now I'm off to see if you've posted a z8 video!
Great video, the one I’ve been looking for to set up my Z6ii. The online manual is cumbersome flipping back and forth between table of contents and specific items.
Also Mike to make it a little more efficient, you can switch the AF-S, AF-C, M to the front sub command dial and then the modes Auto area, single point etc to the command dial in the back - I find that this is a little more ergonomic as one tends to move the modes more than the AF-S and AF-C and the back dial is easier to turn while holding down the record button. The way to switch is: go to the custom menu then f5 Custom command dials then push the d pad to the right then select Change main/sub and push the d pad to the right again then select Autofocus setting On. Once you do this the two command dials will be swapped and you can move your modes while holding the record button with your thumb - much easier to do :)
Hi! Just got my Z6 ii with firmware 1.30 (haven't updated to 1.50 yet). I found this video and started watching it. Starting around 7:14 you display what I believe is your viewfinder. I stopped watching as I can't seem to find how to get the data arranged on the sides as you show it. This video is a year old, so maybe firmware changed it? I think the same data is displayed on my screen but across top and bottom. Frankly, I like your arrangement better (less congested). It will slow me down at least in the beginning but thought I'd mention it in case I missed something somewhere. Thanks for the video. (for what it's worth, I'm coming from a very-loved D750 as well 😁)
Another really good video, Mike. I find the learning curve for the Z cameras is more difficult because users do need to change habits and optimize the camera settings for best results. In addition, some settings preferred on a D850 are no longer the preferred setting on a Z camera. This is part of what throws occasional users who assume they can just pick up the camera and have it work like a five year old DSLR. My specialty is nature photography so my customizations are different. For example, I program the Fn1 button to Zoom to 50% on the Z7ii and 100% on the Z6ii. This lets me zoom in to identify a subject or watch for precise details like head position or field marks with a small mammal or bird. I also use the magnified Fn1 button in place of binoculars when combining birding with photography. It also allows me to zoom and check the image on playback. My Fn2 button is the default - the AF modes you referenced - for the same reason - to quickly make changes through the EVF. My Movie record button for stills is set for Exposure Delay Mode because I often use Exposure Delay with landscapes and occasionally need to make a quick adjustment without time to go into My Menu.
Hi Eric, thanks so much for your comment and kind words. Your feedback and experience with bird photography is really interesting to me so hear how different people utilize the different functions as per their needs. That's why I'm a big believer of never saying what people should or shouldn't do, but rather what works best for me as a portrait shooter, knowing full well that my info may not work for something shooting other types of photography. I also totally agree with what you're saying. I'm a creature of habit, so it's tough for me to get over a style of shooting that worked so well for me with the D750. But this new way of shooting AF-C with Eye/Face AF has yielded so many more keepers, that's it's definitely beneficial. Just hard to teach this old doing new tricks. :) Thanks again for your comment and info, and thanks for watching!
I just bought aZ6 and really love it. Coming from a A6400 and what I really miss, is that you have the eye AF in all focus modes. Seems so that the Z6ii has the eye AF also in wide area, my Z6 do not has this option. Hope this will come in a FW update.
HI Mike - just saw this. Thanks for the shout out brotha - very cool. Keep up the good work!

Great video. I’m very happy RUclips recommend you channel! You make very informatively and nice videos with interesting topics! I’ve only watched three of your videos so far and looking forward to watching rest of them. Nice work! Greetings from Finland 🇫🇮
Great video, one idea...i use lense L-Fn as Exposure compensation, this way when weather changes fast its only about moving lens ring to readjust (Not native in english)
Hi Piero, thanks for your comment! Your idea is great. I just use the dedicated exposure composition on top, but I could definitely see where using one of the Function buttons on the lens could be very helpful as well. Thanks for sharing.
One thing you didn't mention is the 3 user menus you can set up. If you happen to do different types of photography you can set each user menu up for that particular situation. I take a lot of milky way photos. The settings are distant different than for sport/wildlife or portrait photography. You can customize the function buttons and the i menu under each user menu. You can even have your settings for manual mode to start out with saved to each user mode. I use bracketing all the time for landscape but I wouldn't for nightscape so I could have different options in the i menu or function buttons.
Hi Carl, that's a great point and excellent feedback. I use the User Settings for different types of portraits that I often shoot. (U1 for Ringlight headshots with a custom white balance, then U2 for in-studio headshots with a more traditional lighting setup, and so on.) A *really* nice thing about the user settings is that it custom saves *everything* including the custom "I" menus. So if you're shooting one style, you can have a completely different "i" menu pop ups for each User Mode. It's really convenient, and essentially turns the custom "i" menu options from 10 options in the main mode to +30 more options if you toggle the User Mode. Props for highlighting this point, as I forgot to mention this.
@@MikeMcGeePhotography it's definitely a time saver. I'm really liking my z6 II and there's rumors of another update coming out for the auto focus to make it even better.
I'm glad I read through the comments, as I was about to make the same suggestion. Although its not impossible to scroll through the focus settings, select the one you want, and continue on...I use one custom user setting for single-point focus (focus, recompose. Think DSLR.) and one custom user setting for subject tracking. It's really quick. Now, if there was a way to make a note of which user setting does which...
Hi there, thanks your for comment. Did you mean for example the display at 24:49 and similar? Actually, this is generated by Nikon when you output video directly from the Electronic Viewfinder. There isn't a setting for this as it will display when when you capture direct video from the still photo shooting mode. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
just to let you know that if you set your iso at 400 and save your user settings at U2 (for me) and reopen your camera at U2 by default it will be at 400 (not the one that you previoulsly used also the picture control…if you only shoot RAW…it’s an ajustement just for your in body preview…. those ajustment will only work on Jpg :-) hope this helps
Hi Mike ... thanks for the setting tips and your rationale. So I can understand whether I want it that way or not. Would it be possible when creating the videos to mention the firmware version, which is current there? In my Z6II, firmware 1.50 there are additional settings, e.g. "Portrait impression balance", in the Photo Shooting Menu. It is also possible that menu items are omitted with higher firmware versions. This could be a bit confusing. Thanks a lot
Thanks for the video. I'm considering moving from my current Nikon d810 and d4 to the Z6ii as I like the idea of the eye focus system. I see most all reviews state the Canon cameras (which I am also considering in the r6ii) focus much faster. I only shoot senior portraits, families, and weddings. Will the Z6ii focus system be sufficient for those types of photography? I am leaning towards Nikon mirrorless as I know the menu system and I like the reviews of the Z 1.8 lenses. Thanks for your response.
I know you might have completely moved away from your D750 but I just got mine and would love to know the settings you used for portraits on that camera as well :)
you should also upgrade to version 1.3 their is an add on in pho shooting menu i think you would like it’s a new menu item called potrait impression balance (you can change colours, bristness etc)
Hi, thank you very much for this video. But having the nikon 24-70 ,2.8E lens on my nikon Z6ii, please which mode and setting can it be suitable for me to have the live view photo as the prime lens tutorial you provided. Because i'm having changes of getting a brighter live view picture when taking phot session. is just a brand new camera that i just acquire. Please kindly help me.
You can manually adjust the brightness of the viewfinder. Please go to Setup (wrench) Menu > Viewfinder Brightness > Manual and then make any adjustments to better match the lighting in the room, etc. Hope this helps!
So... I have a question about vibration reduction, I'm shooting using my "old" DSLR lenses on a Z6 using the FTZ adapter. In the menus when I was setting up with your fantastic video, I noticed that the vibration reduction was not a selectable option, but these lenses are all VR lenses. Does that mean the camera itself will not assist with VR, and it's just a matter of flipping the switch on the lens? Looks like there re some options regarding this that I don''t fully understand.
Hi Jeff, thanks for watching and I hope my videos assist you. When Nikon lenses with VR are connected, the menu will be greyed out, because the switch on the lens itself will toggle VR. Hope this info helps!
Hi Laurence, do you mean how to move the Autofocus box selector when in the single-point mode? If so, yes, you can use your thumb to move the selector on the back to move it around. You can also setup the setting so it won't stop at the edge of the screen but rather it will flip around to the other side, etc. Hope this info helps.
@@MikeMcGeePhotography thanks mike. managed to sort. i a so used to d700 d4s etc The i button is great as I can see now nikon have digitised lots of the mechanical buttons :)
Hi Adeel. My process is just to shoot, pop out the memory card and then use a USB 3.0 card reader connected to my computer, and then import them directly into Lightroom this way. Works great for me this way. Some people connect the camera itself to the computer using USB, but I just use a card reader. Hope this helps.
You may already know this but the picture control has no affect on raw images only on how they appear in the playback picture and in JPEG files. The picture control, from what I have read, is cooked into the JPEG file.
Thanks Mark. Yes, this is all very true. No effect on RAW images at all. I probably worded something wrong in the video, but I use this mode so when I shoot with clients, especially for outdoor headshots and such, it helps to let them preview the back of the camera to "soft proof" what we're shooting in the moment, so that images look ideal. Hope this makes sense
Thanks for this one, Im thinking about Z6II and I needed this, but I have to say at 16:06 I think Picture control applys only on jpegs and effects only how you see preview on back of camera? 43:05 Metering, too. Effects only jpegs
Hey Ivan, thanks for your comment. There actually are benefits for picture controls, even when shooting raw. Yes, raw is just RAW ultimately. But it does affect the image you see on the back on the camera (and JPEGs), and I think Capture NX-D or NX Studio will even carry over those settings and apply them as an after-adjustment to your RAWs (but don't quote me on that). But for me, even though I don't shoot JPEGs, the picture mode there can alter the image on the back of the camera for "soft proofing" for clients to see the image to give them an idea of posing, image colors, etc. I don't want the "flat" option, so the Standard works nicely. I probably explained this poorly, so I hope this makes sense why I leave it on Standard. For the metering modes, these affect the exposure, so yes, again, with RAW, this can be corrected in post. But in outdoor setting when using Aperture Priority, the metering modes here can affect exposure, which in turn affects the initial image, even in RAW. Again, hope that makes sense, and I likely breezed over this with not enough detail. Thanks for highlighting this info.
@@MikeMcGeePhotography thats all correct and I agree, but I was making comment with full manual (A, SS, ISO) on my mind. I didnt saw differences changing metering modes in manual raw shooting. I think it will show metering scale according to mode we choose, but wont effect final raw file. Im using central metering on my D750 because that helps me dialing exposure + or - for specifit area (sky, face etc) but with Z series is much easyier because we can see the final outcome 😁. Im mostly shooting HSS, so I firstly ajust settings for sky/background and than add flash.
Which Camera and gears are you using to make this video.... somehow its clarity is so perfect and looks like a 3D video.... looks like you are coming out of the screen. Please let me how the settings you have done to make this youtube video
Hey there, I'm just using the Nikon Z6ii and the kit lens, the 24-70mm f/4 lens on a tripod. That's it. (For the demo video with the bobbleheads I was using my adapted F-Mount 85mm f/1.4 for a really shallow depth of field to show depth.) Color is set to auto and I don't do any post-processing of the video colors. They're straight out of camera. I do my editing in Final Cut Pro. I actually just shoot at 1080p 60fps, then upscale to 4k in Final Cut Pro. Hope this helps, and hope you enjoy my videos.
I mapped my record button on my Z6 to the way that you did but I still can’t get it to change focus modes. They don’t turn yellow and it always starts recording when I press the button and hold it.
Hey Dan, that's an excellent question. I've never actually held a Z5 in my hands before so I would be reluctant to say definitively, however from the specs side of things, I would say it sure looks like the Z5 would be a perfect option if those features don't matter. (I actually like that the Z5 uses dual SD cards.) Just also keep in mind if you're going with the kit, the Z5 kit lens is a different focal range (24-50mm or 24-200mm) vs the Z6ii kit having the amazing 24-70mm f/4. Again, not saying the kit with the Z5 is subpar by any means, but it's just a noteworthy thing to point out since I love the kit lens of the Z6ii and the 24-70mm focal range is a perfect sweet spot. One last thing would be that the Z5 has a single processor. Again, not a huge issue, however I have a feeling that much like the original Z6 and Z6 (not mark II's) that the single processor units will not get as robust firmware updates in the future to really make autofocusing even better down the road. Still the Z5 sure seems like a solid choice. Hope this info helps in any way.
Go with the Z5. I bought one without the kit lens but with the ftz adapter all my dslr lenses work fine. I thought I would miss the top display, I don't. And the ibis works great. I can get sharp shots at 1/8 second.
I bought the Z5 n all my lenses work sharp and i could never go back to DSLR, too many improvements, tack sharp focus, easy to get used to in a day or 2. Only thing I miss is the 5×4 crop of my d810 I only shoot portraits so the 4.5 frames are not a big deal If i ever can make money shooting sports z9 is in my wish list but way out if my price range for now. I wish they would trade the Dx crop for 5×4 and i would be golden
Regarding the apply live preview discussion. I usually like to balance my ambient light outside with flash and I find I cannot turn ON the apply live view option with the flash connected. It’s always off. Is there a way to have it on that I haven’t discovered yet because it doesn’t work for me. Thanks?!
A question for my fellow Nikon Z6II user on exposure preview (D9 on the menu) in manual mode: I'm just wondering is it possible to keep it when I'm using flash or if the trigger is connected? It will turn it off automatically which is not what I am looking for. My D750 doesn't change by itself so I'm just wondering if there is any other setting I need to adjust. Thanks in advance.
Yes, this is actually an easy fix. I added the Apply Settings to Live View to my "I" menu. At any time, you can just turn it on/off, even if a flash trigger is connected. When it's in the "I" menu, you have quick access to it this way, and you don't have to hunt through the menus to turn it off. That's what worked for me, and it should solve your issue. Hope this helps. :)
My z6ii and my pocket wizards tt1 or my plus 2 triggers will not work on my camera. I have tried to use several times. Firmware was updated on everything. Plus 2’s are not updatable. Flash will fire. Photo is Black almost every time. I believe it must be something wrong with my camera. Please let me know if you know of any fixes Thanks
With the Z6ii, the PocketWizard TT1's need to be updated with the new e-release firmware in order to work with the Z6ii. It's not just a firmware update, it's the e-release version where you need to pay for the updated firmware per TT1. I don't believe the Plus 2's are compatible at all and those would need to be replaced. The Plus X is what I call a "dummy popper" since it's a single pin, and it will work, but the Plus 3's also require a firmware update. I believe Pocketwizard may launch a program to mail back Plus 3's back to them for a e-release replacement, but I'm not sure if they have implemented this yet. I would reach out to pocket wizard support as they have fantastic support via email, etc. I hope this info helps.
Configure your camera settings to your liking with the dial on M, A, S, or P (Manual mode, Aperture mode, etc.) and set all settings how you would like. Then when they are set to your liking, go into the Menu, select the Wrench icon (SETUP MENU) and select "Save User Settings". You can then select here to save the current settings to "U1" dial, etc. Just repeat the steps to save to U2 or U3. And a bonus feature is that you can even customize the "I" menu to have a different "I" menu for each U1, U2, or U3 settings you select. Hope this helps.

Hope this info helps!
nice video sir help all Nikon user
Thank you so much sir 🎉❤
thanks for the video!
Great, thanks Mike, that was in depth and hugely helpful. 1 more sub 😁
Always happy to help, and thanks for subscribing!
Sir please say how to set camera grid line?
I love you Sir ❤🎉
really useful, thanks. just ant get af box to stop wondering round. do you know how can control it with just the sub selector button?
Hi Laurence, do you mean how to move the Autofocus box selector when in the single-point mode? If so, yes, you can use your thumb to move the selector on the back to move it around. You can also setup the setting so it won't stop at the edge of the screen but rather it will flip around to the other side, etc. Hope this info helps.
@@MikeMcGeePhotography thanks mike. managed to sort. i a so used to d700 d4s etc The i button is great as I can see now nikon have digitised lots of the mechanical buttons :)
thank you very much
Thanks for the great video! The Z6II produces a .nef RAW file format. How do you edit/import those in Lightroom?
@@MikeMcGeePhotography yes...exactly....
@@MikeMcGeePhotography Thanks for your quick reply... appreciate that ( This is Deep Sardana ) logged in with my official channel :-)
@@AirbrushIndia You're very welcome. Cheers!
I mapped my record button on my Z6 to the way that you did but I still can’t get it to change focus modes. They don’t turn yellow and it always starts recording when I press the button and hold it.
Also, when using a gimbal such as the Ronin SC-2, should VR be turned on or off?
MIke, aside from the video and less frames, would u go with the Z5 over the Z6II if those 2 options dont matter?
Hey Dan, that's an excellent question. I've never actually held a Z5 in my hands before so I would be reluctant to say definitively, however from the specs side of things, I would say it sure looks like the Z5 would be a perfect option if those features don't matter. (I actually like that the Z5 uses dual SD cards.)
Just also keep in mind if you're going with the kit, the Z5 kit lens is a different focal range (24-50mm or 24-200mm) vs the Z6ii kit having the amazing 24-70mm f/4.
Only thing I miss is the 5×4 crop of my d810
I only shoot portraits so the 4.5 frames are not a big deal
If i ever can make money shooting sports z9 is in my wish list but way out if my price range for now.
Thanks?!
I like silent mode but you cannot use it with flash.
Hello Mike, can i ask you if you can set 5s self timer saved in U1 and single shot in U2 on Nikon Z6 II ?
How you can setup the camera status on right side of evf ?
This is because I'm pulling the video direct from the HDMI port for the video. It's not like this through the viewfinder. Hope this helps.
Can I use the same settings for Nikon Z7II? Thanks
For the large part, yes, they should be nearly identical settings. Hope this helps.
Eos R or Z6ii what you recommend for potraits?
Z6ii
A question for my fellow Nikon Z6II user on exposure preview (D9 on the menu) in manual mode:
I'm just wondering is it possible to keep it when I'm using flash or if the trigger is connected?
Please let me know if you know of any fixes
Thanks
How to set U1,U2,U3
Configure your camera settings to your liking with the dial on M, A, S, or P (Manual mode, Aperture mode, etc.) and set all settings how you would like. Then when they are set to your liking, go into the Menu, select the Wrench icon (SETUP MENU) and select "Save User Settings". You can then select here to save the current settings to "U1" dial, etc. Just repeat the steps to save to U2 or U3. And a bonus feature is that you can even customize the "I" menu to have a different "I" menu for each U1, U2, or U3 settings you select. Hope this helps.
