With ya. Would be interesting to get a take on how many prefer coverage of current vs these shows. Personally I could listen to these forever. In fact I find myself revisiting these time and time again.
People forget how long it took us to convince Brian to convince Jim to review more modern wrestling. The modern stuff is the appetizer; this was, and always will be, the main course.
We need more Referee stories. Playing up the distraction, how long to play dead, how they manage to NEVER see what we all see... with or without a Titan-Tron... Hey Brian, how about a Referee Omnibus?
Growing up watching Memphis Saturday Morning Wrestling every week on Channel 5 every time you talk about Memphis I’m listening to every word. It was a great time to be alive.
These are the kind of stories I want to hear from Corny! If I may make a suggestion, dedicate one podcast to wrestling show reviews, which I couldn't care less about as I don't watch modern wrestling, and the other for stuff like this. Thanks for listening, if you did. Still waiting to get accepted into the Cult of Cornette on Facebook.
I'm still waiting also. I don't mind them talking about the WWE since it is starting to get a little bit interesting. I have zero desire to listen to AEW. I miss the days where a lot of the questions were about the territories. Now it seems like most of the questions are what Jim thinks about somebody saying this or that or somebody doing something stupid.
This is what I'm talking bout I like it when Corny does the deep dives on Memphis wrestling, I grew up watching Memphis wrestling, it's what made me a fan
We are blessed to have two of the greatest living wrestling historians on one podcast. They complement each other as rarely James E doesn’t know at least something about a specific historical wrestling personality and B Last is a walking photographic memory index of recapping the historical timelines for many wrestlers and promotions.
Its hilarious to me to hear that Mike Jackson was thought of as a wrestling veteran 40 years ago and he still does a bunch of spot shows for indy feds all over Alabama.
I love the Memphis territory deep dives, it's what I remember growing up with going to the matches and seeing it on tv. Grew up in west Tn, Obion Tn is about 50 miles north of Nankipoo Tn (real place).
As interested as I am in Jim’s take on current wrestling, these are my favorite segments. Hearing Jim talking about the old days, even with wrestlers I’ve never heard of, is intensely captivating. More please.
Love when Jim and Brian go back to the past it is much more interesting than the current product 1983 was probably the greatest year in wrestling too bad i wasn't around to experience it
And just about as I was gonna go to sleep for work in the morning , this popped up !!!! Well, this means an hour and a half less sleep . I cant wait till tomorrow . Dammit Jim !!! LOL !
Re-listening to this. "And I got eliminated in a battle royale" is going to become a regular phrase for me in the event of multiple activity summation; "I don't know. I dropped the kids off, went to work, went to the bank, picked up mum's medicine, picked up the kids, dropped the kids off at the house, went to the store and I got eliminated in a battle royale..."
Always love The Classic Deep Dives! I have listened to all the ones i have found so far! But i gotta say every time i hear the Memphis stuff i think of two things: 1. A VHS tape my best friend had in the 80's when we were kids 1987s Rock & Roll Wrestling produced by Rhino it had Jerry " The King" Lawler, "Exotic" Adrian Street, Bruiser Brody, The Rock & Roll Express, The Fabulous Ones, Big Joe Leduc, Randy " Macho Man" Savage, The Moondogs, Kamala "the Ugandan Giant", and more. Like a makeshift type music video set with wrestlers highlights the visuals and rock music played over it. And B. I always remember the "Superstar" Bill Dundee highlight reel from CWF from Montgomery AL late 80's early 90's with Glory Days by Bruce Springsteen playing over it.
Yeah Rude started in Mid Atlantic in 82 then Georgia in 83, then mid South in August 83 , Memphis in 84 , Florida in 85 then World Class in October 85 then Crockett in sept 86 then WWF in June 87
I want to hear Jim talk about the Memphis Trash Can Royale ! Hansen , Ventura , Idol , Lawler and many more . But I have only seen clips of it and want to know the story . But It looked wild as can be !!!! They fought everywhere in the building ! This was ECW way before ECW !!
Spring of 1984 nearing the end of my freshman year of high school we had a spot show in my hometown of Mt Carmel Illinois (about 40 miles north of Evansville IN) in our high school gym. Austin Idol defended the International Title against Randy Savage. Also on the card was the Zambuie Express, Koko Ware, Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers, and several others. The thing I’ll always remember is before the show I got to meet Randy Savage one on one and he was cool as hell even though he was working heel. He didn’t break kayfabe but he turned it down a notch while we talked. Idol was a prick that didn’t give any of us the time of day.
AUSTIN IDOL JUST GOT A HUGE RESPONSE IN CLEVELAND OHIO FOR THE NWA PPV. EVERYONE WAS HOT TO SEE IDOL UNTIL HE OPENED HIS MOUTH AND TRASHED CLEVELAND AND THEN THE FANS BOOED HIM OUT THE JOINT IT WAS AWESOME!!
As a born and raised Memphin i really enjoyed hearing Cornette talk about Memphis wrestling. If is wasn't my dad i wouldn't even enjoy watching 11a till noon.
"And I got eliminated in the battle royal." I keep getting the image of a young Cornette splatting over and over again onto the floor of multiple small gyms and rec centers.
Wasn't Shawn & Marty down in Continental around this time? Late 1983, into '84, right?? The Rockers always, always complained about how Memphis was down and the payoffs were horrible around this time.
Corny keeps saying on these clips that Rude and Manny left with the belts, that isn't true. Manny stayed in MACW for several months after Rude left, often times teaming with Ivan Koloff and working singles.
Considering how much of a non-factor he suddenly turned into the second Rude left, he may as well have left with Rude. Also, MACW was pretty much long gone by that point.
Too bad they didn't bring in Abdullah the Butcher for the hospital elimination match. He would have won by eliminating all his opponents and partners in about 15 seconds.
I just don't believe that Jerry Lawler, the _child enthusiast,_ magic performing, Coca Cola chugging, softball loving goofball was some sort of god amongst men. It just doesn't compute. Was there was some sort of re-cast at some point and the guy from the 70s/80s was a completely different human being from the one from the 1990s onward?
OP.... just curious but why don't you do a live show on RUclips on a weekly basis that fans can interact in real-time and ask questions about anything wrestling?
Bill Dundee. The little girl s loved him because he was so cute. And Dundee was not above sometimes loving the little girls right back. Kingfish too. Don’t get it twisted. It’s true.
These long clips about the old days are THE BEST. Love it
These Memphis shows are the best you guys do BY FAR !!! …. Thanks
These Deep dives are awesome and very interesting keep these coming thanks Guys.
Yup big time!! This is a breath of fresh air vs listening about Tony the Kid's yuck!!
Selfishly, I want more of these. This is more interesting to me than covering the blandness of today.
ruclips.net/video/2x-7WfzVAeo/видео.htmlsi=9zatgVJQQQPDEyzN
I don't think it's selfish, Corny is pretty happy to talk about the good ol days for hours if you let him.
With ya. Would be interesting to get a take on how many prefer coverage of current vs these shows. Personally I could listen to these forever. In fact I find myself revisiting these time and time again.
@@georgemaranville3305👍 agree

@@Dyler Good analogy!

Same. I don't even listen to the other stuff
These deep dives might not get as many clicks as the reviews of modern shows, but for us fans of Jim, this is the real gold we appreciate.

Hey Brian, how about a Referee Omnibus?
BRILLIANT idea.

It's almost a coin-flip as to which was bigger...elvis or memphis wrestling in the 70s...and probably would've been so in the 80s if elvis had lived
These are the kind of stories I want to hear from Corny! So, Taker has a podcast now and he brought up his Manager Mount Rushmore.
Bobby, Lou Albano, Jim, Paul E. And Bearer as the bloody mountain.
Can't argue with this tbh

Its hilarious to me to hear that Mike Jackson was thought of as a wrestling veteran 40 years ago and he still does a bunch of spot shows for indy feds all over Alabama.
I saw Wrestle Birmingham on TV years ago when I was traveling through and he was on there.
The December outlier was indeed weather-related. That’s when the huge 1983 ice storm hit.
Always makes me laugh when Jim carries on about WWF being hokey and fake in the mid 80s whem memphis was way worse.
More Memphis. Please!
Live around 15 miles down the road from Obion, TN, and work in Jackson.
I would have been five in October, '83. This is a riot!
Could we have a Memphis and Mid South omnibus for the holidays, 🙏 please?

Imagine if, every month, Cornette went back 30, 35, and 40 years (on three different shows) to see what he was doing.

I went to Wabash Valley for a year before transferring to SIU.
The early 80s deep dives are the most interesting. Right before the territories started to dissolve.
Jerry has a lot to thank Memphis for 😅Good times and Great memories Brother.

Memphis was a great territory, in the late 70’s through the mid 80’s.

I don’t recall the timeframe, but Michaels and Janetty had a run with Morton and Gibson in Memphis, with the Express working heel.
